So I have the AT&T Galaxy S6 Edge and out of no where I started getting the dreaded Mediaserver drain. I can't figure out how to resolve the issue and it's really killing my battery. In regards to troubleshooting here's what I've tried so far. A reboot fixes the issue for about 1-2 days and then it comes right back.
-I cleared the cache for media storage and rebooted.....didn't fix it
-I cleared all the cache on the phone....didn't fix it
-I did a factory reset and wiped everything....didn't fix it
-I upgrade chrome and webview to the 53 beta as I saw some people with the S7 stating they were causing a drain on their phones.....didn't fix it
-I installed a 3rd party app which lets you clear mediastorage and rescans only a few media dir's.....it removes all ringtones and still doesn't fix it.
-I have .nomedia files in all of the folders on my local storage that I don't want scanned
At this point short of running odin I am out of ideas. I can't figure out the cause of this drain, in the past any of these steps have resolved the issue. My mediastorage is at about 5.31MB so it's not crazy big. I have no media on my device except for pictures I take which I upload to google photos and then locally delete and I only stream music through google play music. I really am at a loss. Does anyone have any ideas what else I can try? I'd rather not do an odin on my phone. I'd greatly appreciate any help.

Recently and suddenly, my media scanner seems to be very messed up. Whether triggered from a file manager, or simply booting, it never gets past 0% of the internal storage. After about 10 minutes, my user memory is completely full, and I start getting errors about the database being full, telling me to delete apps. I also can no longer receive any text messages when this happens due to the memory being full. If I go to the list of installed apps through the Settings menu and choose Media Storage, I see that it is using up almost 100MB of my ~130MB of user data. I can choose force close and then clear data, and the phone is back to normal (until the media scanner is triggered again).
I don't want to disable the media scanner, because I use stock apps that rely on it (such as Gallery). I've already scanned and checked my phone's memory for errors, as well as cleared cache/dalvik cache and factory reset. My ROM/kernel/etc. are in my signature.
I had a similar problem a little while ago and it turned out that a corupt video file that I had saved to my phone was causing the media scanner to be stuck at 0%.
Try removing any recent (or all) media files and see if that helps. Then all you have to do is figure out which one(s) was causing the problem.

You were spot on. There were 4 video files on my phone's memory that seemed to be causing the issue. Interestingly enough, I couldn't find anything wrong with the videos--they were standard DIVX 5.1 vids and they play fine on both my computer and phone (although the file needs to be opened through a file manager or player that doesn't rely on the media scanner). None of my other videos trigger this issue, so I guess I'm stuck with re-encoding these 4 and taking a quality hit, even though I wanted to avoid that.
I have updated to the lollipop update like many and my phone is warm and sometimes hot.
I am not using my phone and it still gets warm and drains the battery life.
In 4 hours I will go from 100% to dead with no use.
My screen was off but shows it as being on. **See attached photo
I searched the MOTO threads and cant find anything as of now to resolve this issue.
Anyone else having this issue and find a fix?
Tried wifi channels to see if this issue fixes this, cleared cache and nothing........
Hope help comes quick!
If I can get some help I will buy them a beer or coffee!
Okay here's an updated seems to fix the issue......
I disabled the WiFi location settings, download clean master -- https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cleanmaster.mguard -- and seemed to have fixed the issue so far.
Keep you posted as the day goes on.
After you updated, did you do a factory reset? If not, and before you do, what apps do you have installed? You might have an unruly app that's just constantly running. I hear Google Fit hasn't been too friendly...
Since Google services is pretty high on the usage list, it could have something to do with syncing errors or maybe problems with updating Google Play services/Play Store. Make sure you have the latest versions.
Google Play services (6.5.85) - http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google.../google-play-services-6-5-85-1589008-438-apk/
Google Play Store (5.0.38) - http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/google-play-store/
Also, unsync any services in your Google account that you aren't using.
Don't forget to turn off extraneous radios like WiFi (if you don't use it for location), GPS, NFC, and Bluetooth when you're not using them.
If all else fails, factory reset and pay attention to the apps that are being downloaded. Uninstall garbage and disable what you can't uninstall, but don't use. Hopefully this helps.
EDIT: Seems you fixed it. Nice! Well, use this as a reference for your next step if things don't stay behaved.

Clear cache and reboot. If you still have the problem, do a factory reset. Also, has the phone stabilized? Have you been through a couple of charge/use cycles? There could be a load of background processes setting up for the first day or so.
Seems the Qualcomm battery guru is a culprit as is the xfinity WiFi app.
Motorola said do a factory reset but I don't want to if something else can be done.
Think it's fixed by the WiFi location and the clean matter app showing the apps that kill the battery.
Here is a great article about asps that keep restarting in lollipop. It's a bug in ART. Google is working on a fix.

Best method... Root and use greenify...

I'll post my battery drain/overheating story just to join the fray...i updated to Lollipop 4 days ago and I have had to charge my S5 at least a dozen times. I have tried power save mode, disabling every nonessential app and anything else I can find in the forums.
I used to get 15-16hrs of battery life (6am-10pm) with charge to spare, but immediately after the update my CPU sits maxed (monitored by Micro CPU Monitor) and constantly overheats (GSAM Battery Monitor). The phone went from 95°F to 105°F in 10min with standard use. I only had it overheat one other time in the last year (on my dash in the summer). I hope Google/Verizon will replace my battery because this abuse of it is going to shorten the life considerably!
See screen shots from the last charge at 4pm to now (10:15pm) all while UNUSED and in powersave mode plus battery at 107°F (a new record for me)!
I really don't want to reset the phone and lose my app settings, plus it seems to be hit/miss with other's issues. Any suggestions would be great.
Seems hit or miss.
Not sure what to tell you but try making sure you're Wi-Fi isn't always searching for locations when not connected. Seems this is a huge problem for many as Verizon threads and Android forums are filling up. I don't have an S5 but will keep looking for the fix.

Anyone else having Instagram Failing suddenly on Note 8? I've seen some YouTube people say it's been in the last few minutes too. Only thing that works for me is to clear data, then re log in, but if I close it, it starts forceclosing again with the "Instagram has stopped". Any permanent solutions?

This happened to me on Monday. Instagram kept crashing.
I tried clearing cache and data in the app, deleting and reinstalling... no joy. Finally, after reading a thread about Samsung themes and overlays causing trouble for Instagram, I temporarily restored the default Samsung theme, reinstalled Instagram, and all was fine.
Later, I reapplied my custom Samsung theme and haven't experienced further issues.
There was a known issue with Instagram, server side, that was resolved within a day (hours maybe). People were having issues even installing it or updates from the play store.
I am finding that my apps that send notifications, specifically that I send through LIghtflow, are either not notifying, or doing so 30 min. to an hour late.
I am also finding that installing as well as uninstalling apps are quite slow.
POwer saver is not on; battery optimization is not on for the offending apps; they are set to run in the background.
Anyone else experiencing this? Or any suggestions?
Regarding the slow downloads, I am finding the download finishes (according to the status bars, etc), but it then goes into a state of Install Pending. Can't find anything on that.
For anyone who cares, I have it resolved for the time being.
After 2 factory resets, I remembered back to the days i used to root my phones, and remembered that one strongly recommended task in that process was to delete cache.
So I did a final factory reset and deleted the cache also and all seems to be good.
When this crops up again I will try the cache delete w/o a factory reset and see how it goes.
Not getting much help here but I'll keep this thread upgraded.
It is again not working right. Lightroom is either not notifying or it's doing it 30 minutes late.
Play store downloads but then doesn't install for a period of time.
I'm beginning to think something is wrong with the phone.
This thing is driving me nuts. Following is what's going on, and have seen:
I've gone through 4 factory resets. All works find at first. Having decided that maybe there is an app interfering, I installed an app or two, tested, repeat...with delays between repeats. All seems fine.
But then late into the second day, w/o any installs, I goes haywire again. Symptoms are:
I use DGT GTD for my ToDo list. First thing I will notice is that when I add a new task, it will NOT show up in the widget list, and at the same time it stops notifications.
All apps stop sending notifications to Lightflow...or LIghtflow does not recognize the notifications. Not sure which is the case.
When add a new app on the Play Store, it downloads as quick as normal, but then it takes forever to install.
I installed AVAST, and checked for viruses. Came back clean.
I suspect it could be a phone problem. My Mate 9 works fine right now, with all the same apps. But, when a factory reset results in it working (at least during the short time a tech would evaluate), the phone can't be exchanged.
If anyone has any thoughts. I'm all ears. I'll keep posting, hopefully, ultimately, with a resolution. Maybe it'll help someone.
This might be the app itself but I didn't have any issue on my S20. Since I updated the phone it randomly cuts out. Any ideas? Never on WiFi though...

Is it when the screen is off? Check it's not been put to sleep in battery settings
it seems that latest ROM updates (I think I have this on all AUB* ones) is weirdly strict on background activities and cuts every one of them. my whole device acts strangely - apps not showing notification or showing them late (hours later than they were supposed to show), my apps are not updating: I have to repeatedly FC play store, then clear its cache so that currently installing app changes state from downloading to installing, than do it again to change state fomr installing to installed etc. worked fine on AUA* ones. it is really annoying. btw I tried to clear cache and dalvik/art cache from recovery, but that did not help. I have not tried factory seset yet...
It seems that it was data corruption during regular OTA. Factory reset seems to fix problems for me.
I'll try a reset.. thankyou
Let's be honest, the Spotify app has issues too begin with. On my S21 and Pixel 4 it can be playing songs to my earbuds then suddenly stop running in the background on its own! Unlock the phone and itis still open in the foreground.
Perhaps it's time for a new music app if this is a known Spotify issue... But if it's not a Spotify issue, then check in your battery settings (as others have mentioned) to see if your phone automatically started putting it into "Sleep Mode".
