Extremely slow charging without enabling fast charge - Galaxy Note5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I do understand that the Note 5 has fast charge and normally we should leave it enabled to enjoy the charging speed. But the thing is, when fast charging my phone heats up very fast and although it does charge fast, I feel like it could have a negative impact on the battery. So recently I tried turning the fast charge option off (in the battery settings). I expect it to charge normally like when you plug in a non-fast charge adapter, like the one from Note 4 for instance, but it's very very slow. Measuring via ampere it shows ~480 for a couple first minutes, then it drops to ~180 for the rest of the time, then the phone even shows a notification of charging slowly. And that's using the original fast charge adapter, even. Not sure what's happening here. Anyone has a similar experience?

Cables make a world difference when it comes to charging. Are you using the original cable as well ? If you use ampere , and try different cables , you will see that the same charger , outputs different values , depending on the cable. It is also normal for the mA to reduce as the battery gets closer to 100% So a lot of things affect the current at which it is charging.

tilt battery charges slowly.

Within the last few days I've notice that my phone is charging at unbelievable slow rate via the wall charge that was supplied. I usually get a full charge in maybe 1-2 hr depending on what percentage the battery is at. Once it is fully charge it hold the charge, but when it drains then it would take like 6 hrs to do a full charge. I've tried to soft reset it to see if the percentage goes up, but it stay the same. I turn off the phone to let it charge, but it still charge at a slow rate. I'm wondering is it time to purchase a new battery.
What do you think? And is there any other test I can do?
The slow charge could be one of a few things... One could be the battery as you suspect (and probally most likely).. Also, are you chargign the phone in a diffrent place? If the battery gets too warm from lack of circulation, it will not charge (or just charge much mroe slowly).. It also could be that your USB port is starting to go... IF you have a stand alogn abattery charger available for it (like one on a docking station) try to charge it on there and see if it still charges as slowly.. Another though could be if you are charging it in your car while using GPS or Wifi.. IF those are left on, they suck down the battery a lot faster and thus it uses the electricity as fast as it can pull it in.. I woudl suggest powering the phone down while charging.. that could also help...
i always charge it in the same spot since i got the phone. i dont have a dock charger. its weird last night i was at 49 and i turn off the phone completely and plug it in. woke up today the orange light indicating that it was charging still was on. turn on the phone and it was at 55 percent. WTF!!!!!!!!!!
I guess that touch pro 2 better come out soon.

i have the same problem. Its either your USB port or the charger, so simply go buy a new charger and if it still does it the port is bad....if not, problem solved
or put it in your computer to charge, that avoids buying a new charger.
usb charging is always slower then wallplug charging as usb can only provide
5v * 0.5Amps == 2.5Watt
where
wall charger can provide as much watt
as the charger is made to
but of cause the pda will only draw as much
amps as it was made to support

Hi, I've been using a note for about a month and a half now, and all has been well.
Until about two weeks ago, when my phone started charging very slowly via USB. Using a 2.1amp charger, it takes about 4-6 hours to charge, and about 7-8 hours using a 1.1amp USB charger. The less said about 0.5 amp chargers the better!
However, when I'm charging using a 1.1amp charger (Standard USB output), often when at 15 or less percent of the battery, if I still use the phone while plugged in, it actually drains power faster than the USB port can provide it! It will often shut itself down and give me a "extreme low battery" screen, meaning I can't turn it back on until it has some charge in it... which can take up to 20 minutes via the same USB port/wall adaptor
Running stock 2.3.6, unrooted.
You could have a faulty or dirty micro-usb port or a faulty battery.

I have the same problem. My Note is new and I don't think the battery is faulty
With stock ICS in comparison to GB, it consumes more juice thus takes longer time recharging.
This is normal, but sad.

I have the exactly same problem and ended up here, while searching on google if there are othere with similar observations. I can as well comfirm that during playing certain games the phone looses charger faster than it can be recharged.
Beside that my phone overally looses battery much faster than it used to be.
I found out that you can recharge the phone considerably faster when it is completely turned off.
[edit:] The problem started after the update to Android 4.0.
Now I have no way out but to root my SGN running stock ICS that allows me to do more customization.
I am using SetCPU to limit CPU clock at 1200 MHz (from 1400 max). Only certain apps really requiring CPU power, I specifically allow them to run at max MHz.
This helps reducing recharging time a lot...a lot (even much faster than charging when on GB) and allows more time in outdoor uses. And there is no lag.

I've found the total opposite, I find charging in ICS (Stock not a custom as I've not tried one) to be loads faster at charging than in Gingerbread.
What programs do you have constantly running? The more that's running, the more juice it's gonna use and therefore the slower the charging will be.
How long does it take to charge with the phone off?

Same problem with charging as well.I an using ics 4.0.3 cpw version and it draws more than it gets from the usb charger.
I also experienced slow charging before.
What I do is to close all the applications and see if that works.
Same thing happened wid me... Its Kernel fault.. Try changing kernel.. It will help

Look for runaway tasks consuming high CPU and maxing out the CPU clock rate. You can use a CPU monitor like System Panel Lite, and also simply feel the phone at the rear near the camera. If it is hot you have a problem of some process going nuts.
This is a classic problem I've faced on ICS and I've given up with it and gone back to GB. No problems since.

Just to clarify, a standard USB port on a pc/laptop can only provide 500mA not 1.1amp. Not sure where you got this value from. Therefore it will not provide anywhere near the required current, especially if you are actively using the phone. Most cheapo car chargers are also innadequate at 500mA. The standard sumsung wall charger only provides 1000mA.
What 2.1Amp charger are you using? Its not recommended to use more than the standard samsung charger outputs !
You need 1000 mA (1 A) charger for proper recharge even on GB.

1A is the standard Samsung charger.
So is it okay to force the note to use the 1 A ? standard it is set on 700mA

I too started having this problem yesterday after updating to a recent version of Visual Voicemail Plus. Even charging from the wall outlet could barely keep up. Turns out the problem was VVMP continually polling NON-STOP for voicemail. Reverted back to older version and problem ceased immediately.
My point....your problem might be software and not hardware. I'm still on rooted and overclocked GB with franco.kernel.

I'm using non-data cable to charge via usb port, it's way faster. Only cons is that u won't be able to transfer any data.

I have been using HTC & Samsung wall chargers, Belkin 1A in car. All chargers provide fast recharge. However, the quality & length of USB cables are crucial.

Just to clarify things, the 2.1amp charger is a USB battery pack, and the 1.1 amp charger is a USB wall adaptor. I'm running 2.3.6 GINGERBREAD, unrooted.
There are two charging rates, slow via the USB data cable, and faster via the charger (where the D- and D+ pins of the USB are shorted). If it thinks that you are using a computer USB when you are in fact using a charger, your charging will be at the lower rate.
I had this problem of slow charging and the cause was a dirty connector, get some electronic connection cleaner from an electronics store and spray the USB connection and cables - that fixed my slow charging problem.

USB charging speed extremely slow

Hey guys, I just bought my One a couple weeks ago and I'm loving it so far. However, I'm having an issue with the USB charging speed.
I know USB charging speed is slower than wall charging speeds, but the speeds I have been getting are ridiculous. To charge my phone from 0-100 takes about 9 hours over USB when the phone is in sleep mode and not being used. Can anyone else tell me if they're getting the same kind of extremely slow USB charging speeds? Is this normal for the phone? I've been thinking about replacing it and seeing how the next one fares.

I haven't timed it, but yes USB charging is very slow in general and especially on this phone. I've had several HTC Ones, and had the same experience.

Some Kernels have an option for fast charge which is supposed to help with it but certain usb ports only put out a certain amount of power. Also I know a problem with the OG note was with fast charge enabled a few charging ports burnt out (mine included). It was easy to replace them on that phone but this one will be more difficult if it does the same thing.
The problem is that the phone sees the difference between an AC charger and a usb charger. With an AC charger it can charge with a maximum around 850mA while with an USB charger it charges with an maximum of 500mA.
There properbly is a trick how to make the phone think it's on AC charger, while it's actually on an USB charger, and therefore charge with a higher current, but I haven't found out how yet.

Depends on the current battery level of the phone. Anything above 83%(somewhere around there), even on AC charger it will slow down to 500mAh at most.

Strange charging issues.

Hello guys! I just purchased a second hand teclast x98 air 3g & charging seems bit strange to me. I've installed a battery meter and standard discharge rate is showing as ~2000-3000ma (I think?).
But mainly on charging with a normal microusb cable with a xiaomi multi ampere charger (3A/2A/1.5A) it doesn't charge but only maintains the charge at the moment. If heavy use then decreases too. I tried with 3 different cables & different chargers too, but it's the same.
Then finally I tried with another cable & it seems to charge but extremely slowly like 1% in 10-15 minutes. Maybe a bit faster when switched off.
So mostly it looks like only overnight charge is possible..
Also please state your optimal battery settings (display/intel display settings etc) for best battery life as well as smooth performance.

Fast charging/super fast charging

I'm currently on Android 11, june patch. Just got the phone this week and noticed something very frustrating. I can generally "fast charging" as i only have a 15w charger for now. But sometimes if I unplug it and plug it back in, it just says "cable charging" i have other chargers and it's the same.. sometimes it says fast charging, but i downloaded Ampere and can see it only at 300mah and only goes up very slowly.. 1% every 4mins..
Anyone else with these issues?
Just try using the official charger and cable because everything else would be way dangerous. The same thing you have mentioned is happening to me as well. Try changing the way cable is plugged in. Turn it upside down.
Im using the 25w charger, Samsung original and neve chared with the stock 15w charger. It shows super fast charging, no problems here.

Meh, fast charging only will engage with 25 watt brick that is compatible.
$15 for a Samsung 25wbrick/cable at Walmart online, what's not to like?

Yeah i plan to get the 25w charger, just waiting on delivery. I'm just trying to reduce buying so many as i have so many spares from old phone that charge in just over an hour SOMETIMES And over 3 hour at other times! Frustration is even if i unplug and plug it back it, it never seems to go to fast charging unless i let it discharge a little. Winter here and it's cold so temperature of battery has been fine.

Temperature matters. Charging is an electrochemical reaction. Too low a temperature and fast charging will not engage. Charging below 72-82F can cause Li plating to form which will permanently degrade the cell.
Never attempt to charge a Li at 40F or less!
Best battery start temperature is 85-95F
Li's fast charge best in the 90's.
Below 60F fast charging may not engage and it will slow charge for the remaining cycle.
Fast charging will disengage around 80% and at 90% will slow even more. This is to protect the battery.
If the battery temp get above about 101F fast charging will disengage. At around 104F it will stop charging all together.
Cool battery as it approaches 99F with a fan and/or damp microfiber cloth.
At ambient temperatures above 90F cooling will likely be needed for fast charging.

I don't really work with Fareinheit, but after looking, battery is reporting it as around 29degrees when charging. It does seem to be more consistent the last 2 days, i wonder if it's because the OS was still trying to learn my usage. It still happens, i just need to unplug and plug it back in when it says slow/cable charging. But haven't tested it too much, so still unsure.
I am still waiting on charger, i'll keep this forum updated in case anyone else is interested.

I received my charger after i typed up message. I used it with super fast charging getting 3000mA from ampere app. Worked great unplugging and plugging it back in.
Tested using it on my s10 charger, and it showed up as fast charging, unplug, plugged it back in, cable charging only.
Went back to the 25w charger. It says super fast charging but hovers aroud 1000mA.
Can't get it to use high speed. Temperature at 28.5 degrees.
The only way for me, let it drain 10% and put it in the charger again to get 3000mA charging speed. The message that says "super fast charging" means nothing to be honest.

In what battery % range are you charging? It should draw closer to 4000-5000 ma at its peak fast charge rate with a 25w brick.
About 2%@minute when fast charging at peak rate.
Erratic fast charging can indicate a battery failure.
Any swelling is a failure. Replace immediately it this happens.
Other signs are deminished battery capacity.
Try clearing system cache.
Toggle the fast charging switch on/off 3 times.
Discharge until phone shuts down then charge to 100%. Some say to do this 3 times but one cycle worked for me to recalibrate the battery gauge.
Fast charging is a little b*tch when it goes south but always suspect a battery failure if this happens. A swollen battery can damage and destroy the phone.
Battery failures can happen at any time but are more likely to happen with degraded Li's.

Thanks for the response, with the testing i've done, it's been 70% to 100% only.
i've been needing my phone for work, so i haven't had a chance to discharge it. Will try it this weekend.
Do you charge it back to 100% after a complete discharge with the phone Off or On?

At 70-100% you'll see much slower charging.
Li's prefer frequent midrange power cycling. It can extend their life by hundreds of full charge cycles. Example 40-70%
I rarely charge to 90-100% usually to 65-82%
I almost discharge below 30%, 40% or so being typical. Below 20% there's not a lot of usable energy. It also stresses the battery more when charging from a deep discharge state.
If you insist on charging to 100% at night at least slow charge it to reduce battery strain.

i drained it to 0% until it turned off.
After turning back on, i plugged in the 25w charger and it started charging at 4000mA and max 4750 for only a few seconds for the first 10% and after that, it went down and stayed around 3000-3500mA. happy for that for now. So thanks for your input.
Basically, to get fast charging/super fast charging, don't unplug and plug in a few times unless you have to as it will revert to cable charging, and then you'll need to let it drain a little bit (i found, around 10mins ) before plugging it in again to get the fast speeds.

Having the display on skews the charge curve, don't. It will charge slowly or not all if the display is on.
It you turn the display with it the battery page already open you have one or two seconds to see the display off mAh charging rate.
You can easily tell it's fast charging by watching how fast the battery percentage changes with the screen off.
1%@minute or less slow charging
2%@minute fast charging is active
Fast charging will ramp down depending on inputs like temperature and charge percentage the power controller recieves.
If it starts or goes under/over temperature fast charging will disengage for that charge cycle.
It also will ramp up/down sometimes throughout the below 80% range. This is normal.
Being in the optimum battery temperature range at the start and throughout the charge cycle is important but don't go too nuts. Higher is better than lower. Once the battery is below 70°F it will not fast charge as well (or at all) and/or can detrimental to the battery ie Li plating. There maybe other parameters the controller uses as well... not sure.
Oddly the Samsung 25w bricks are very tolerant of low input voltage. They will charge with as little as 60 VAC!
Like a few have said, fast charging like that will degrade your battery faster due to high temps, but the way you use it has a big impact on that. If you fast charge at those speeds to 100% take it off and use it constant until dead, and put it back on the charger then you will deff degrade it faster. Lithium cells need to rest between charge and discharge to let the the temperature settle. If not it's taking a hugh work load wearing down the internal resistance which drops the cells Mah rating.

You're correct it's best to allow some rest after charging and to not fast charge.
In practice this goes out the window
I do try to keep the voltage down as well as the temperature below 100F. Ambient temperatures here are frequently in the 90's
If I get a year out of this new battery I'm good with that.
However once it's down to 80% of its original capacity it gets replaced to avoid a failure. That's what happened to the original battery and I was lucky it didn't damage the display.
Below is my typical usage and the 10+'s fast charging patterns. The last charge ended with a near ideal battery charging temp of 94F. It fast charged nearly the whole time.

wow that's intense! Battery nerd (in a good way!) I downloaded the app and i've deleted it, i'll just leave it the way i have it for now haha

I do try to keep the voltage down as well as the temperature below 100F. Ambient temperatures here are frequently in the 90's
If I get a year out of this new battery I'm good with that.
However once it's down to 80% of its original capacity it gets replaced to avoid a failure. That's what happened to the original battery and I was lucky it didn't damage the display.

Jeez, had that app for a long time until about a year ago... I use AccA on a Rooted Pixel but id say I started using it a bit late.. You know none of this would be an issue if they still used replaceable damn batteries!! Lol My old Bar & Flip phones before color screens lasted days to over a week, and still had spare battery near by... My Startac even had a Solar panel battery

Yeah I have a flip top and S4, takes about 30 seconds to change the batteries. Most of the newer Samsung's aren't that bad to change out the battery once you know a few tricks. Some phones with multiple batteries are bloody nightmares though.
Solar panel? That's pretty funny
One way to limit phone usage.
