I have been reading a bunch of HTC One vs S4 threads and been watching them. And I feel like everyone is making the comparisons on each stock, which makes sense. But I was wondering which is better when rooted and both having a custom rom and kernel. Since I know that having a custom rom and kernel can make the overall performance better.
For Example, people were complaining about the lag on the S4 so they switched to the One. But I feel like if those people would've have rooted it and put a custom rom or kernel, it might have helped the lag.
So which device do you guys think is better with custom rom and kernel improvements?
Which one has a bigger improvement with custom roms and kernels?
Thanks guys And if there is a thread like this comparing the roms and kernels of each device against each other, then post a link and I can ask to close this thread.
Posted this in the S4 forum as well to have opinions on both sides and not just on one side, which isn't fair.

It's not different at alllllllllllll.
It's not allowed, and everyone here will say the HTC One.
There's no point to this, promotes arguments and trolling. Don't start it.
All your questions require knowledge and use of both phones. I know a few people have both but a lot of people here haven't spent £1000 on 2 phones, so will only own the HTC One. Therefore the S4 answers will be a load of crap
I am getting tired of reading about comparisons and threads turning into arguments because of such issues. Bottom line is, devices should be fairly compared on a stock basis and not with custom ROMs or kernels. There are benchmark tests and others available online, just use Google and you'll find everything you're looking for. They are both great devices and that competition in the latest technology, features and market price are what make the world of smartphones better, which in turn benefits us.

This is not different. Please use the search feature and ask your question in an already existing thread.
To answer your questions though, I switched from the HTC One(running TrickDroid/ARHD, Bulletproof kernel) to the Galaxy S4(running WanamLite, ktoonz kernel) and now back to the HTC One(ARHD, Beastmode kernel). The HTC One has, by far, been the better experience. It's smoother, faster, and more responsive than my S4--on top of that, I actually used the "unique" features of the One(Blinkfeed, Zoe, etc) whereas on the SGS4 in an effort to smooth it out, I turned most of it's "unique" features off. Overall, I found most of it's "unique" features to be very gimmicky.
Here's what it comes down to: Neither phone is better than the other. There is no "best" phone. The closest you can get is picking a phone that has the features YOU want and that are important to YOU.
I'm new to android and am interested in some of the functionality custom roms offer, but I'm reluctant to give up the stability/base functionality of the stock rom. I have been looking at CM, but hear of various minor hardware related issues with bluetooth, camera, sound, etc.
Is it expected that all of these issues will be ironed out over time? If so, what would be a reasonable expectation for how long it would take for the stability and functionality of, say, CM to be comparable to stock?

You should ask this in the CM threads. The developer himself would be the best person to answer your questions.
Hey, thanks. This has become clear since this is the second forum I've asked in and gotten no replies.
I'm having some trouble figuring out which thread to post to. I'm looking at, eg: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2414819&highlight=cm
But that doesn't seem like it's the "official" thread for CM on the One. Is there such a thing, or is there more than one version of CM 10.2 for the One?
I'm finding the huge list of ROMs on that forum confusing...the variety is just overwhelming. Are most of them personalized tweaks of a smaller set of core ROMs?

I see that thread is about nightly builds, and it seems like it's pretty experimental, with regressions not uncommon. Is there something like a release build that is considered the most stable to date?
Is 10.2 considered to be more stable than 10.1 at this point?
Hello there, yes 10.2 CM is in nightly stages but is running great on my phone so far. Recently they just ironed out some proximity sensor issues that was annoying. And yes some things can be buggy or not work, but on my end it's running smoothly. I think the worst parts are fixed by now.
Official release will come. This is CM we are talking about .
AOSP Roms just needs a lot of testing since they are built from scratch.
sent from my One.
AOSP roms will never be as stable or offer the same amount of functionality as stock, but they can be faster and smoother so it just depends what you prefer
(I notice a similar thread has been locked and I already tried a similar thread on the Android Q&A forum which got locked for other reasons but I'll try)
While I realize a lot of the differences may be obvious it would be nice to have a summarized version of how these ROMs (PA, PAC, AOKP, Slim, Carbon etc) for people who are switching from CyanogenMod (because of the recent changes that are making some people unhappy).
Because it sometimes looks to me like they are all just trying to play catch-up with each other and there is not a whole lot of difference there.
I would like to know what the favorite roms are for original features. When I say original features, I mean features that aren't particularly prevalent on most roms. A lot of roms offer roughly the same feature set in regards to customization (and there's nothing wrong with that), but is there a particular rom that stands out to you that offers original features or optimization that you just can't find on other roms. I've always been a fan of paranoid android but they've been slightly MIA of late. My apologies if this thread already exists, I did a search beforehand to no avail. Just looking for opinions! Thanks!
You're asking conflicting questions. Slim ROMs are by far the most original, coming up with stuff specifically that other developers aren't but then their ideas are so good, they end up in most other ROMs anyway so yeah, where as slim are IMHO the most original, they're never different for long - and nor is any other ROM

Fair point! I suppose I wasn't wording that quite right. I guess I was asking more what you answered. Where do the ideas and features originate, and what roms are more than just Kangs? Thanks for your reply!
nexus 6 original development threads http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/orig-development
all other ROMs are just kangs, to various degrees(even these ROMs are partially kangs).
Whilst I am so glad to see a lot more ROMs (particularly Lollipop) being released here for the S3 Lte - I am often at a loss to know which ROM does what - e.g. what features each ROM has. I am not a very frequent flasher (sounded pretty nasty) and would appreciate it if any of you guys and girls who test and try out the latest ROMs could give their opinions on ROMs - I know this is a big ask.
All I really know at the moment is that Slim Rom lollipop is a light ROM with a lot of the bloat gone.
Thanks in advance.

The short answer is try them. Read the last 5-10 pages of the thread to get an idea of what people are having issues with and the first few posts for features and screenshots. IMHO lollipop is still buggy and not really suitable for a daily driver, although it depends on whether you want a rom long term or flash new ones regularly, and which features you need.
As far as "bloat", it's probably easier to think of roms(especially AOSP vs touchwiz) on a scale of slim/speed -> features. But again, depends on what features you consider bloat.
