cable for Android Auto - Nexus 5X Accessories

Any one using Android auto on this phone? which cable are you suing.
I am using a USB to C converting charger right now, but when I use it, phone discharges. may be the power is not enough to charge the phone.
Any special cable or setup needed?
please suggest

As I assume you are talking about Android Auto Google appwitch doesn't need any cable bocouse it connects wirelessly with Car with is capable of Media Interface and Android/iPhone plugin (cars from 2016 - few BMW, Bentley, Audi -no Mercedes)

Problem is the port that comes with your car doesn't support quick charge as it is a standard 1.5Amp port and not a type-c. Your best bet would be to get a USB type c - usb 3.0 cable from Anker or any other seller but be sure it meets usb type c specs. If you are buying on amazon make sure you read the reviews from Benson Leung who is an engineer from google.
I have been using anker cable and its working fine.. Although it wont charge much when using navigation but atleast it wont discharge

I have USB type c to USB 3 cable, when I connect the cable directly to the car and use navigation it works fine, but when I connect through android auto, it wont charge at all. i am fine if it wont discharge. so your cable will not discharge using android auto?
Do you think this will be useful?

since my phone didnt come with the type c adapter, nor the usb a to c, i had to make something.
i went out and bought a usb type c to type a female (it was made for some apple laptop), then cut up two usb type a male cables and wired them together color to color. i plug one end to the usb type c adapter, and the other end to my android auto unit and it works fine!
i have noticed some vehicle that come with android auto only throw a 1.0amp through the usb port, while aftermarket radios (pioneer, kenwood, etc) come with 1.5 or even 2.0 amp usb ports.
my phone will not charge on the 1.0 output that the stock vehicles have, and if im using nav i will definitely see a drop in battery.

I was looking for something similar a while back. I'm in the UK and still haven't tracked one down
You can find a y otg cable HERE. If you need several USB port, you have to use an USB hub. And also you must flash a kernel with USB host mode charging patches.

Something like this perhaps? It had a usb a cable with a switched 5v lead (for host mode charging), that end plugs into a regular usb otg cable. The other side has female usb a (for devices), mini usb (for most small usb hubs), and male usb a (for connecting to a power source, in the 2nd pick there is a 2000 mAh usb battery)
I couldn't find anyone selling them so I started making them. I could make you one or post a wiring diagram and you can go to town on it.

How much to make one and post it to me please.
Ill make and estimate for you over the weekend. Do you want it exactly like the one pictured or do you have a custom request? Your kernel supports otg charging correct? Where will I be getting a quote to ship to?

I have the usb car rom and kernel by http://mehrvarz.github.io/nexus-7-usbrom/, this should work. yes I would like the same as yours please.
I have alot to do to my car anyways, I previously re modded my dash to fit a double din and modded out my boot to fit the base amp and power cap in the boot still having the spare in there and the base actually fitting inside the spare wheel and still sounding good, so will have to research the wiring needed for the nexus and the volume control and such...please be nice with the price, I do appreciate it though.
I am in the uk, where are you from?
I found the kernel you compiled, wondering if this will work with the rom I installed too.
It might, its all cm10.1 source. The current version does not support host mode, the updated one I'm posting this week does (just so you know). If it does work for you you could do some fun wardriving with your car mount, if your into that sort of thing!
I'm in sunny california usa

Will have to see what the shipping fees will be, I have friends over there too. Part of a gaming clan. Have been for sooo long now. If it works out too much, I will have to ask you for the wiring diagram and I will have to see about doing it myself, I am good with electronics, but it was just the time to set aside. You can message me the diag if you like, please forward it to fixer14 at hotmail.com.
Ok cool, its a pretty straight forward design. If you can solder you can make one.

I have just been out to my car and have set my phone up via bluetooth, and also want my nexus to connect to the phone and have sound, calls, satnav running to the amp via phone, when I try to connect it seems that it will only allow 1 device at a time, so this is an issue for me, I want to be able to run my copilot live from the nexus, and also have ability to play music and receive and make calls. is there a bluetooth receiver that will allow me to do this without having to switch to a specific device each time...any ideas welcome, my nexus is not a 3g one.
My amp is a 4 channel Hertz, with powercap installed.
I'm installing my nexus 7 in my car as well but I'm concerned that it wont charge while running Nav, Pandora and other apps at the same time. It seems that the nexus 7 is picky when it come to cables and chargers. What do you guys suggest

Ive got my nexus 7 installed into my double din, I'm using a Parrot device to bluetooth sound to but also charging it from the usb slot from the Parrot box.
I'm going to change the bluetooth to a AUX cable to save on battery use and already tried optimising settings to save on battery.
I'm not very clued up on this type of stuff but I've got it so the screen comes on and status on when power is there, got screen dimming widgets so I can dim the screen right down when I want to save battery.
All in all it works very well but battery does eventually die after a week or two so I take it out for a full recharge.
A couple of ideas I'm thinking is
1) using usb extension cable, run it to the glove box and every couple of days attach a emergency battery charging unit.
2) using a little solar panel charging unit built into parcel shelf.

I am not concerned about power usage as an inverter will solve this permenantly. As long as you get the correct charger for use with the inverter.
Im going with this charger. From the looks of it, it seems to be a good choice.

Okay, I have just made up a dock for the nexus for my car, it is in "Production State" at the mo, so I still have to tidy it up and spray it and finish it.
I have fitted a charging connector and audio connector into it,
Hardest part was getting the connectors to line up.
At least it is started now, I will be making up the OTG cable, when I get the wiring diagram for it, have all the bits ready.
Okay, here is the Video, I know the dock looks rough at the moment, but it has to be tidied up.

The Type C to Type C can't be used for data transfer unless you've got an adapter or the new macbook which supports the type c connection.
I'm currently on the look out for a cable that is USB to Type C that has the 3.1 speed and can also be used for data transfer.

I've read the USB defaults to "charge only" mode, you might need to switch that in the settings first.
For now I will just be transferring my files wirelessly but I might buy an adapter or type C to type A cable eventually if I desire slightly faster transfers or USB charging.

The phone includes USB Type-C which isn't the same as MicroUSB. You can't use your MicroUSB cords because they won't connect to the phone.
I've picked up a couple cables from eBay and have had to return them. They won't even go in the charging port and I am not going to force them in.
So as of right now, I'm stuck with adapters. At least they work.

Usb Y cable to quick charge and use android auto HU

Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone knew of a USB Y cable (with two male usb plugs converging into one female usb port) that could allow quick charge and data transfer so it could be used with Android auto? Both male usb plugs would need to be able to transfer data into the female usb port in order for this to work.

I guess this wouldn't work and might also damage the head unit, but I'm no engineer.
If I were adventurous enough to risk frying my head unit and/or phone, I would follow this
http://www.instructables.com/id/Add...-hub/step3/Cut-the-VCC-wire-of-the-USB-cable/
and connect the output of the quick charge car adapter instead of the external charger.
Then would cut the Vcc wire directed to the head unit.
I don't know if the main hub cable (the one which normally goes to the PC) has to go to the phone or the head unit: who's the host in Android Auto? I'm inclined to think it's the head unit, since the phone connects in mtp mode. So my first guess is main hub cable to head unit, quick charge adapter connected like in the article, then big usb to micro usb cable to phone.
Maybe voltage higher than 5V would fry the hub, and maybe Android Auto connection is so picky (and it's picky, you know) that the hub circuitry wouldn't allow it. Who knows.
Again I'm no engineer and I'm scared to try
But I would buy a safe device tested for this use case, 10/10

Use a usb y, but don't short the data pins to send it to high charge/current mode. You won't necessarily hurt the hu but you'll never connect to AA, the phone must detect the shorted pins to enter high charge mode. Which means the phone can't talk on the data wires. I find a 2a charger running at 1a plus the hu's usb keeps just ahead of the power usage.

Unfortunately, you can't have quick charge (2.0) and data transfer at the same time (at least with my Galaxy note 4). On a standard USB cable, you have 4 wires, two for data, two for power. On my GN4, the data pair communicate with the quick charger (I'm not sure exactly what the communication is, I remember reading somewhere it used the data pairs to communicate voltage, etc...).
Now, what I did do, was make my own data cable using 2 male type A adapters and connecting it all up to a a male microUSB end(Data pair is only connected to 1 of the type A male ends, I can't remember if I wired up the power in parallel). My AA head unit puts out less amps than my car charger, so even though I'm not getting quick charge speeds, I'm getting a bit more amps to charge with. So, one male end goes to my charger, one end goes to my head unit. I've been using it like this for over a year with no issues.
How much better is it than charging while connected to the AA head unit? Not sure. I'd rather have more amps than not enough.

Hi,
I want to clarify some aspects:
1) Qualcomm's Quick Charge doesn't work when the USB is in use for data.
2) Quick Charge requires a certified adapter (as it's an active function).
3) USB power can charge the device, however very slow... in fact with AA the device consumes battery when running.
So, my question is:
- Increasing the USB power current with an Y cable the device can be charged more quickly?
- And if this is true: the Y cable needs to block the current from the dta USB port of the car?
I like to comment these topics.

USB cable question

Does anyone know of a USB cable that it capable of supporting AA and has USB-C on one end (for device) and double 3.1 on the other end (to vehicle)?
I have 2 USB ports in my vehicle. The input port for AA does not charge the phone sufficiently when is running and the other port does fast charging but doesn't allow AA to run.
Thanks very much!
Welcome to the never ending problem! No, it is not possible to do what you want to do, that is, to be connected to AA and to fast charge your phone from an other usb port or car charger. I tried everything, including powered usb hubs, nothing works, unfortunately.

Thought about that but I'm worried about overheating. I guess I might need to try it and find out?
Do not be worried of overheating, if the phone is connected to a usb cable and port and it detects charging, it will automatically disable the wireless charging.
The only way is to replace, if possible, car's charging circuit with a fast charging one.

Chromecast with Google TV Ethernet and USB Hub Questions

This thing is pretty new, but has anyone been able to make it work with USB OTG ethernet adapters and hubs? Whenever I try the ones I have I end up on the error screen where it tells you to plug it into the wall instead of a TV USB port. I realize the ethernet adapter is available for pre-order, but that's $20 I would rather not spend when I have a few USB ethernet adapters laying around. Besides, it won't have USB ports.
The reviews I have seen say you need a high-wattage adapter. The packaged one is not strong enough to use through a hub.

I saw those and it doesn't make much sense to me. This has to be an artificial limitation by Google to force people to use a wall wart instead of a TV USB port to avoid customer service headaches. I highly doubt this thing needs that much power to operate. I tried an old OnePlus Dash Charger (5V 4A output) with a simple powered OTG dongle and still got nothing.

Its looking for a power supply capable of delivering 1.5A of current.
The CPU in the thing is a QUAD-core Cortex-A55. Specifically, Amlogic S905X3. That's a pretty substantial CPU, so I don't think that 1.5A is that much of overkill. If you look at other tv boxes with the same CPU, you'll also see that they typically include 2A power supplies. In order to ensure that the power supply is capable of this, they are enforcing USB-PD profile 1 compliance.
Now USB-PD requires digital communication between the device and the power supply. If your "OnePlus Dash Charger" is not compliant with USB-PD, or if your "simple powered OTG dongle" blocks the communications, then the TV dongle will assume that you have it plugged into a standard 500 mA power adapter and complain to you about it being insufficient.
Oh, and the SoC itself has a TDP of 5W (1A at 5V). Add a few more parts like RAM and UFS and you can easily draw more than that, plus, you always want your power supply to have some room to spare -- not run it at its limits. That clearly puts you into 1.5A *MINIMUM* territory.

In order to prevent yourself from sounding like a doofus, a "watt" is a unit of POWER. So when you are talking about the adapter, use the words "high-POWER". "wattage" is very awkward.

All well and good maybe, but PD Profile 1 basically states that the wall wart provided is not up to spec.
BUT, that's actually a good thing because this is not a PD device, period. I can prove that very simply now. I am using a 5v 3a barrel jack wall wart to power it via a hub.
Specifically this hub: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07QN3YYXM/
And specifically this powersupply:
https://pine64.com/product/rock64-pinebook-pro-pine-h64-5v-3a-switching-power-supply/?v=0446c16e2e66
Unfortunately, I cannot seem to get it to pass data through.
Edit: I did buy the hub to test, but the Rock64 powersupply is one I've had for a few years because of my sbc hobby.
EDIT2: Further testing shows that using the included barrel jack to usb cable (that comes with the above hub) with the Google provided psu works just fine too. So no need to buy the barrell jack wall wart above. Still no data passthrough though. The hub works just fine on Windows.
From my understanding, it is not USB PD compliant, but it does do some sort of testing of the connected power adapter to make sure it can output enough power. My guess is that some adapters get in the way of the full output of the connected wall wart. Which doesn't surprise me.
Hi, I've just received my new Cromecast with Google TV this.

Power I get from my LG OLED TV USB port via a simple USB-A to USB-C cable.
Routing: LG OLED USB port --> USB Hub --> Chromecast (connected via PD output of hub).
I am using a hub too. This one specifically, which has ethernet built in:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FX2LW35
It works fine, and it's powered by a 6 port USB-A charging station (otherwise I'd have too many charging bricks in one spot):
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00Q6DZBIQ
I haven't used the ethernet but I have other accessories connected, including a 400gb micro sd adopted as native storage. The more accessories you have connected to the hub, the more power you're going to want to have access to (ie the TV's USB port might not supply enough power).
Your guys' options are spendy. I got it done with this:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08C5FWQND/
You can plug any old hub into it you have laying around and it'll (probably) work.
I bought this one:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07Z7H3GJK/
It works fine with the google-supplied power brick plugged into the hub. Ethernet works as well, 1Gb (I think Google's adapter is only 100Mb) However, the activity light is Neuralyzer white. Also have seen reports that if you leave the hub powered and connected to your network without the chromecast, it will cause problems. Otherwise well built.
I bought this one $12.99

There was a comment saying it works, arrives tomorrow.. I'll update post if it really works.
Update
It works, just not with the power adapter that comes with the Chromecast with Google TV. I had to use a different one.
This one also works with ethernet and sd card (and the default power supply):

Mine arrives tomorrow as well... Any update? Did you need to use a different power supply? I am guessing it may depend on what you have plugged in. I am planning on just using a single flash drive for expanded app storage. I already have a networked drive for media.

It works but the power adapter that came with the new Chromecast with Google TV didn't work. Once I swapped it out with a more powerful one we're all good.

Hey there got got myself a usb hub for new chromecast too.
this hub
So far it works, but not the card readers.. Have to put the micro sd into an usb cardreader an plug it in the usb port of the hub to get the chromecast recognise the storage... Sucks yes
When booting i get this screen (dont know why upsidedown)
It will boot and behave normal, as long i dont attach any usb device.
It will also connect my microsoft bluetooth keyboard, which is pretty handy when you have to type something.
So i want to get an power supply that can provide enough power...
I dont know if its possible to overpower the chromecast and overheat, but i guess it is.
So do you think this
power supply
Would do the job?
Cheers

Won't hurt it in any way, but seriously overkill. 60 watts is enough to run a laptop.

Yes. As I understand, if it happens to work, you could risk damaging your devices.

It is not recommended to use the Chromecast power adapter with a USB hub, as it does not provide enough power.
Find a more powerful adapter.
This is the hub that I am using in the US:

You won't damage your device. Don't spread this kind of nonsense.

That should work. What are the details on the second power adapter you tried? The 1.5A adapter these CC's are shipped with are pretty marginal for the power demands. You probably want something that can feed 3A or more at 5V. And remember that Chinese labels are often lies, so even if it says 3A, it could be 0.5A.
