Are both custom recovery AND root the problem for OTA, or just the recovery?
If I leave stock recovery, and do full unroot with SuperSU, will then OTA still work?

You would have to try that.. I didn't try this method.. I downloaded the full rom from en.miui.com and flashed through TWRP... and then flashed SuperSu.. this would ensure that data remains and rom is rooted and updated.
Moreover, generally MIUI OTA updates are same size as the original rom, so doesn't matter if you download full rom or OTA.
Thanks. OK then. So generally I can install both TWRP and root. And when I get OTA notification, i just download the full rom, and flash it using MiFlash tool, without wiping data and phone storage? That way I will still have all my apps, but will obviously have to root again (and maybe put TWRP?), right?

download the full rom zip file and flash it using TWRP.. no need to flash using MiFlash tool.. you'll flash to flash supersu zip again.. no need to get TWRP again as it is still there and ya all yours apps and data will be there.

No, miui ota are much smaller than full rom. They are just just 100 or 200 MB if you update regularly. There is a modified twrp called zcx. If has an option to flash incremental ota zip without losing root or recovery. Search on afh.

Follow these steps :
1) Download SU binary+APK and put it in the sdcard. The downloaded file is a flashable zip.
2) Unlock bootloader (Can be done using HTCDev)
3) Flash custom recovery
4) Enter recovery then flash the zip file you just put in step 1.
5) Wait till it finish flashing, then reboot, you should be rooted now.

As far as I know, you just have to flash your stock recovery whenever you want to do ota updates. I converted my one to a developers edition a while back and whenever an ota update came out, i would flash my recovery, update, then put twrp back on. It never gave me any trouble because of my root.

Aaah, sorry for the confusion, i mean on stock ROM and not recovery. I'm not really sure if its possible to flash the superuser zip in stock recovery or not. I think its not possible. If you want official OTA, if im not mistaken, it doesnt really matter which recovery you're on. Just use twrp and flash the superuser zip and you're good to go..

You have to have stock recovery to get a true ota update. That is how it updates. If you download an ota update, first thing it does is go into recovery to flash it. It will end up going into your custom recovery and just sitting there. Your phone firmware and hboot must match the one of the current rom, but it has to have stock recovery to do the actual update. First time it boots after ota, you may loose your su, but just put custom recovery back on and flash it real quick and you should be good to go then you can flash back to stock recovery and twrp should fix your root if it has a problem. I hope this helps. You know you can just download the updates and flash them yourself too. Btw, newest 3.22 rom sucks! It has many problems that are all over the forums. Proximity sensor has gone to hell, and your messages contact pictures disappear every time you get a new text.

Okay, thats new for me, never know that we need to be on stock recovery for official update.
That's why I never wait for OTA.. I used ROM in this forum and so far I never have any issue that U mention above..
Can someone explain this to me as to why https://android.googleapis.com/pack...amu-ota-LMY48I-from-LMY47Z-superblock-fix.zip gives me the following error shown in the attach picture?
Looks like it should match correctly but sideload is errorring out saying otherwise
C:\Users\Double\AppData\Local\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools>adb shell getprop ro.build.fingerprint
google/shamu/shamu:5.1.1/LMY47Z/1860966:user/release-keys
C:\Users\Double\AppData\Local\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools>
Do it from stock recovery. It's kinda broken in twrp because twrp was build with a build.prop with old user keys so it won't let you flash it. All the Ota zip will see is those old user keys and kill it every time. Stock recovery will work.

If you have TWRP, chances are your rom would be modified in some way so the OTA Won't work anyway.

Correct, root is a modification. An OTA will not flash unless the rom and kernel are 100% as expected.. This is regardless of whether the OTA zip is flahsed in adb sideload or as an OTA natively.
If there is a J factory image available, fastboot flash the system.img and boot.img and you're updated.
If there is not, do the above but with the version the OTA expects. .. Then flash the OTA

According to me you don't have to unroot and install stock recovery just to install ota update there is a way to install update for same kind of rom i.e. stock rom update on stock rom or Custom rom update on custom rom without losing any user data. (Note:- This method is worked for me to apply ota update. You can do it on your own risk but if you had any problem you can ask me anytime.
Following are steps :-
1) Download the latest ota update it should be located here (internal storage/data/com.letv.android.ota/files/otaUpdates) folder.
2) There should be a zip file just cut and paste it in root folder for easy process.
3) Now boot to TWRP recovery and flash zip file which is pasted in root folder.
4) Now format dalvik cache and if you want root, then root again because due to flashingnew rom root access and all other changes you have done in system will lost but all your data will be safe... (This method is usefull for same type of rom i.e. from stock rom to stock rom or custom rom to custom rom).
5) Just for your knowledge 5.8.0.19s update file is full rom file but if you want other versions such as 5.8.0.16s then use offline update packages which are full size i.e. around 1.7 gb.
Also you can flash root since twrp comes with inbuild root tools just locate it in twrp recovery in advanced/tools/root.
Also you can install stock rom just after flashing stock rom in place of any custom rom just wipe data and factory reset and then apply root and reboot normally.

Use the Chinese Developer's TWRP...
It will let you flash official Update also will replace recovery, root, basebend, firmware everything.
So you will have a new, untouched mobile... and can receive and install future updates...

Dear XDA,
Can I update my phone (OOS 3.5.4), to OnePlus3TOxygen_28_170114 via OTA?
It's been rooted and I'm using the TWRP recovery.
No custom kernel.
No, you need to download the full OTA and flash it in TWRP.
My advice is do not do a dirty flash.

It allows local upgrade, but it has not much flexibility like TWRP.
I've just updated from 4.0.2 to 4.0.3 and here's how my "OTA" was working:
1) Got notification that the update is available
2) Went to XDA to download OOS 4.0.3. full ROM zip, TWRP 3.1.4.1 image and Magisk 11.1 root
3) rebooted to TWRP, flashed new ROM, Magisk root and TWRP image.
As far as I know, that's the only sure way to update your phone while keeping root and TWRP.

But i'll take a wild guess and tell you that in TWRP you always need to flash full ROM, not OTA version. Otherwise your phone won't boot.
