I'm getting a used xt1058 att phone. I'm pretty sure it's on jb or kk. How do I unlock bl and root? Should I take all updates up to lollipop? Then unlock and root so I can get it ready for 7.0 build when it comes to our phone?

Is this still able to be rooted?
I'm interested to know as well if the XT1058 variant bootloader can be unlocked as well.
Brillant phone & form factor but unfortunately stuck at Lollipop

Hi, I have a sprint Moto X on 4.4. I haven't unlocked the bootloader or rooted anything because I haven't felt the need to but since 4.4.2 came out it keeps nagging me to update but I don't want to loose my chance to root so I figured now would be a good time to root it. I've looked around the forums but haven't seen a guide specifically for the Sprint Moto X root for 4.4. What is the process to root my phone? Once I do I can just disable the moto ota app and I'll stop getting the notifications to update right?
Thanks
Edit: Also, is it possible (and a good idea) to flash a stock 4.4.2 rom and keep root?
If you unlock your bootloader, rooting is simple by flashing twrp.
If you want to leave your bootloader locked, you need to use safestrap and all that other stuff. Much more work.
Its all in the stickied complete guide to Moto x. Or in the dev threads. Doesn't matter if you are sprint. You want the locked bootloader method, or unlocked method....depending what you decide.
Lots of info in the sticky in general.

I don't have a warranty on the phone so are their any cons to unlocking the bootloader?
I looked at the complete guide and it seems pretty straightforward.
My last question. Is there a way I can upgrade to stock 4.4.2 after unlocking and rooting? I don't want a rom with a bunch of changes and unneeded features.

If you unlock the bootloader, the only con is warranty. Everything else is a pro.
4.4.2 can be rooted just as simply as any other version, if your bootloader is unlocked. So the easiest thing to do is do the 4.4.2 OTA for your phone, then root after upgrading. Or flash 4.4.2 manually if the files are available yet.
Keep in mind, unlocking the bootloader will completely wipe your phone.

there is one Con like said and that is the warranty but i could care less because being able to root any version of android is a huge plus side i would really unlock your bootloader

Awesome!
Look in themes and apps section. There's a few threads with different boot screens and instructions.

It depends on which xt1058 it is. If it's the at&t variant, u cannot unlock the bootloader. If it's any other non-us carrier, u can unlock the bootloader...

For the Developer Editions Moto X, and some carrier editions (Like T-Mobile, Sprint and others), Motorola freely gives away the BootLoader Unlock codes when requested On Motorola's Web SIte. In the case of the Non-Developer Editions, it voids their warranty to request the code.
I'm not going to go into the reasons why, but Moto does NOT give out the bootloader unlock code for the Retail and Moto Maker X for Verizon, ATT and a few other carriers.
That is why you will see people ask what carrier.
One last note...
IF you get a 2013 X for ATT or Verizon, AND the phone is still on 4.4.2 or lower AND the bootloader is NOT 30.B7, you can use Sunshine to unlock the bootloader.
NOTE: once the phone has 4.4.2, 4.4.3 or 4.4.4 on it, you can NOT Safely downgrade it!!! And there is no way to downgrade the bootloader (even on Dev Edition models).
thanks i got the XT1058 ATT model but i am having bootloader BO.4 which is a good sign and i have android 4.4.2 so i can unlock with sunshine root. thanks for replying

you saved me form lots of regret my friend, i will keep cancelling updates until i can pay for sunshine. i have boot loader 30.b4 thanks a lot for your suggestion
Is there no other way to unlocked BL XT1058 ?
My previous phone is dead, but the data was backup via TitaniumBackup.
Without unlocked bl, i can not root... Without root, i can't restore my data via TitaniumBackup
*sigh* I guess i bought the wrong phone?

Correct. If you have an ATT XT1058, Sunshine was the only option to unlock the bootloader. And to use it, you needed to be on 4.4.2 or lower, and never had 4.4.4 or higher on your phone.
IF you have a Rogers Canada XT1058 or other non-ATT XT1058, you should be able to get your bootloader unlock code directly from Moto's web site.

My ATT XT1058 is on lollypop.
And i read its dangerous to downgrade my os.
Hmm... dead end for me, so far...
Is there any root method that will work for an at&t moto x running on 4.4.4 and unlock bootloader? Or am i stuck running stock?
Enjoy stock, you're stuck. Unless you find a bootloader unlock code.
Next time search, this question has been answered too many times already.
Always read the stickies... Like this one from the general section,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2826159
?
What the hell.. c'mon man it's been like 10 years... still not a method.
You may have found some threads on here that recommend Sunshine, a $25 app that you can download (link below). The developers say that it may work for some users that are on 4.4.4. Try it. It will confirm for you whether it will unlock before you pay. It successfully worked for me when I was on 4.2.2. Good luck.

Your bootloader is UNlocked? If so, just flash TWRP recovery, reboot-bootloader, go into TWRP and it should prompt you to root. If not, install SuperSU zip from TWRP.
Now, if your bootloader is still LOCKED, then you are stuck. Sunshine has not worked on ATT XT1058 that has 4.4.4 on it. (and before you ask... no, you can't safely/successfully downgrade all parts of the X in order to use Sunshine).
As for how long its been... As android matures, there are less and less bugs and vulnerabilities to exploit/hack to gain root access if you can't unlock the bootloader. The number of people capable of finding them dwindles too.

That is sad. I tried to use sunshine just now on xt1058. Says I have no root (after attempting temproot).

all I know the Bootloader can not re unlock when you flash stock firmware or update OTA. So you dont need to relock BL after do anything ! Keep Bootloader Unlocked will help you custome your phone easier with root and more !
A certain thread called "[LOLLIPOP WARNING]Those Who Unlocked Via Sunshine or Purchasing a Code from China" says the following:
There is an Enable OEM Unlock option that is appearing in the Developer Options of the N6 and MX14 running 5.1 and if it is not checked, you cannot unlock your bootloader. If you unlocked via Sunshine or purchased a code for your device from the Chinese code seller, we do not know what is going to happen wrt this Enable OEM Unlock option for your phone if you upgrade to 5.1.
Until we do, it is safest to not upgrade and stay unlocked until 5.1 drops and the situation becomes clearer.

There hasn't been any update on the thread since the 5.1 release for the Moto X, so if I were you I would wait... Sunshine has also a support line, so you could also send a ticket and directly ask if they can unlock your bootloader. I'm sure they have seen this case!
you had an xt1058 right ? you updated to 5.1, did your bootloader get relocked ?
It didn't, but I had a Rogers xt1058 that was BL unlocked directly by Motorola and not by Sunshine...
According to Motorola's website, at&t's Moto X cannot be BL unlocked officially, so that's probably why we cannot know what will happen if you update to 5.1.
Hello,
I'm running a Verizon 2013 Moto X with its bootloader unlocked by SunShine. Will the Lollipop update that is getting pushed out relock the bootloader? I'm anxious about taking the update without knowing if there will be a way to root again afterward.
Thanks!

they never relocked the bootloader with any other phones with updates like the razr hd so they probably wont on the x and its easy to root when you are unlocked just flash super su through a custom recovery
it did not relock my dev edition

How did you unlock via Sunshine? I'm on 4.4.4 and used Kingroot for temp root and sunshine tells me that my device is not compatible.
I took the update and it didn't relock it.
As for SunShine, i used it while I was on 4.4. I waited until I knew I could keep root to take 4.4.4.
I am on VZW non-DE 4.4.4 latest and it's wanting to update ... I don't have the bootloader unlocked and sunshine won't temp root last I tried ... is there any hope in staying on 4.4.4 in the case an exploit is found and 4.4.4 is needed before going to 5.1?

I unlocked via sunshine earlier this year. I used the recovery image (version LPA23.12-39.7) to update to 5.1 rather than taking the OTA. Bootloader is still unlocked.
