I'm getting rid of my phone soon, and would like to know where my hundreds of texts are.
This would be too logical for Windows software, but might it be all the little files in Windows > Messaging ?
Not sure if those are the messages, but they're no use to any other (non-Windows Mobile) phone....
Why don't you use DotFred's PPCPimBackup tool (here) to backup the SMS'es - then you can extract them (they're in a .CSV format) from the phone and save them on your PC.
Just a thought......
Mark.
Thanks for quick reply. I'll try that. Those little .MPBs do look very useless...
They are located into "cemail.vol".....
if you are planning to buy a non WM phone i don't think you will be able to transfer the messages.
Where does that file reside ? It isn't in Windows...

True, but what about being able to keep them on computer and be able to read them ?..
You can use jeyo mobile to transfer the text messages into outlook or use PPCPim backup and then extract the files inside which are csv files (like Mike crouch has already stated) the backup file can be copied to your pc and then extracted with winrar or winzip, its just a zip file anyway(just named differently) but if all you want is for them to be stored on the pc just use jeyo mobile and it will sync them to outlook for you and add an extra folder for them
While I'm a Mac user (yeah, I'll just get an iPhone someday), I do have an XP set up that I run, but my phone never connected to it. Nor would it connect to the Vista machine downstairs. So, connection-required actions just aren't feasible for me.
Back to PPCPim: I changed its backup file to a ZIP and got inside, but the different PIM files (tasks, messages...) are different .pb– files, where – is b or p or t... Changing them to .zip doesn't work. Is WinRAR supposed to decompress those as they are, .pb– ?
change the file extension to csv
Oh, those to CSV, ok. Thanks then.
What would open the CSV file ? Internet Explorer didn't.
Ok, got them open.
Talk about a mess of data ! But at least I can view them without Windows Mobile now. Thanks for the help.
I have yet to receive my device yet so I'm wondering if the Touch Diamond plays well with Linux? As in can I transfer music to the device, sync etc? I also have Windows XP setup in Virtualbox so I'm wondering if it will work with that also. Thanks.
it's not the biggest of fans when it comes to linux, but i believe sync solutions are being developed; though none readily available at current.
Not sure about sync but you should be able to access the 4GB internal storage through disk mode
There is a sync solution called SynCE, which works but is a bit fiddly. You can certainly xfer music to the diamond as it appears as a mass storage device. I've had to nuke my Virtualbox install before trying activesync in it so I don't know but I would frankly be rather surprised if it worked, the USB passthrough for VBox isn't perfect.
I suggest you to check FinchSync, its written in Java, so it is platform independent. I haven't tried it though.
FitchSync doesn't seem to sync with Evolution, Not totally sure about this, haven't properly checked it.
I have been playing with multisync which should be able to sync but for some reason doesn't, no error message or anything, click sync and nothing happens. Have to investigate that.
I updated the Wiki with an option for syncing the Touch Diamond with Linux. I'm personally using this method for syncing my Diamond with Thunderbird under Ubuntu 8.10. The method is based on Funambol, which has plug-ins for both Evolution and Thunderbird. There's also an Outlook plug-in, meaning that you can sync with Windows too. The obvious benefit is that by using Funambol you can actually sync your phone with several different computers and/or operating systems. It's decentralized (stored on Funambols server), which means that the drawback is a two-step syncing procedure every time you need to sync The page and instructions for getting started with myFunambol is here: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Diamond_Sync_Linux
Edit: Oh yeah, another benefit you have by using Funambol is that you can transfer all your contacts from your old phone easily. It's very likely that your old phone has support for SyncML, so if you create an account on myFunambol and sync your old phone and then sync your Diamond you'll have all your contacts on your Diamond!
I have also updated the page on using your Diamond as a modem (via Bluetooth) in Linux. You can find the instructions here: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Diamond_Modem_With_Linux
Mass storage mode works out of the box in Ubuntu 8.04+ (possibly other versions too). This means that you can transfer music to the phone. However, you won't get the album art by doing it this way. I haven't looked in to this yet. It's possible you need to sync with Windows Media Player for the music transfering to work 100%. Or maybe it's just a matter of naming the album art right and putting it in the right place. I dunno
Edit: If anyone has information regarding the music player in the Diamond, specifically about using album art, it'd be much appreciated
I finally took the time to investigate the music player, and it turns out it's really simple to get the album art showing. There's no need to use synchronization from Windows, you just have to put the album art in the same folder as the mp3-files and name the picturefile hTC_AM_AlbumArt.jpg (that's the name the file gets if you use Windows Media Player to sync music to your HTC, it's possible or even likely it's case sensitive). WMP seems to resize the art to 256x256 pixels. You should do the same, and also use a fair amount of compression to keep the file size down. It appears that you can use whatever resolution you want for the file, but it takes longer to load if it's big.
If you are having problems with the playing lists, soft reset the device and remove the file /Application Data/HTC/AudioManager_Eng/AudioManager_Eng.vol on the main memory (not the 4GB internal storage). You cannot open the music player after the soft reset or the file will be locked for deletion!
Also, if your music is in disorder you should update the ID3 tag. I'm not sure, but the Touch Diamond probably doesn't read ID3v1.x tags. ID3V2.4 is confirmed to work, and that's also the latest standard for ID3 tags, but most mp3s probably is tagged with v2.3 which most certainly should work too. Try it before you retag your whole music library. Under Linux you can use EasyTag to tag your mp3 files. EasyTag can be found in the Ubuntu 8.10 repository. EasyTag has a function for tagging mp3s with pictures, but this doesn't seem to work on the HTC. It just displays the hTC_AM_AlbumArt.jpg anyway. So if you want different pictures for different songs (ie singles) you should put them in separate folders with different hTC_AM_AlbumArt.jpg
Funambol working fine, sync your data well
Look also at dashwire.com working fine on diamond (and his clones)
Both, first time sync trouh a windows machine on avtive sync
specialy if you dont have flat fee internet on your cell
it takes some time on mobile internet end gives you a great bill if you dont have flat fee
PS: Funambol syncs whit thunderbird on linux whit a funambol plugin and lighting from mozilla, fast and no errors
does funambol let you install and remove apps on the phone?
and transferring music / video can be done via the 'disk drive' connecction when connecting to the phone
No, it does not. It's not that kind of syncing program. Iit's only focused on personal information, ie calender, tasks and contacts.
Seems Google Sync ( http://www.google.com/mobile/default/sync.html ) kan be used to sync your Google accounts Calendar and GMail Contacts via ActiveSync on the Diamond (Exchange-mode?). I haven't tried it yet, but if you're already using Google services this should be ideal. Google also has mobile versions of many of their products (for instance Docs, Tasks etc). Please note that you should have a flat rate for internet data, or this would most certainly be rather expensive.
question about file transfering between a pc and hd7.
when i connect hd7 to my pc it doesn't appear as a storage device, as it does all modern devices with android.
i read about the way around, but it didn't work for me.
zune helps to transfer only a number of file types - like media files or pictures.
just one sample - i've installed freda reader, but can't put any epub-file to read! i can't even attach it to an email - well, i can attach, but can't save it on the phone - it says, that .epub is just not supported by the phone!
so, the question is: is there any chance to transfer any file from my pc to hd7, and, for example, to save any attached file on the phone?
you can email it, but it has to have the proper program to open it.
For freda, the best work around right now is to use caibre ebook library on your desktop, set it up as a server, then you can add them to freda.
If you search for freda to wp7, you should find step by step instructions.
Check this out:

Now I just realized HTC HD7 with the GREAT Windows Phone OS is SUCKS ! I'm facing the same problem too, NO FILE TRANSFERRING accept songs, photos & videos ! Is that all ?
I'm wondering why HTC came out with a phone like this with no mass storage support ? More worst than apple with itunes, at least I'm able to add/remove apps through itunes. With ANDROID, I can do almost EVERYTHING I want ! What about the mighty Zunes ? SUCKS !
Do you know why people want to migrate their HD2 Windows to Android ?...
---------- Post added at 11:27 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:02 AM ----------
Do you mean using email to attach files/data to do as file transfer ? What about I'm going transfer a gig or 4 gig ? Transferring a 4 gigabyte files over the internet ? Woo... I know you're kidding, right ?
Some more, do I have to know freda to force using my HD7 for file transferring ?
If I have to do some complicated steps to make my smartphone working, then how can I called my phone is a SMARTPHONE ? Because it is not smart at all !
Friend, I'm not criticizing or scolding what. I'm feeling that I'm being like an idiot holding a stupid phone that I can't do anything to it.
It's just a different way of thinking about storage, that's all. To improve security, and reduce the risk of a bad app trashing your phone, Microsoft adopted a model where pretty much everything operates in a 'sandboxed' mode. You are not meant to share data between apps on the phone (except using copy-paste ).
If you're coming to WP7 from Android, (or from WM6) that model is going to seem strange, but it doesn't make the phone unusable. You just need to get used to the idea that each app will have its own preferred cloud location(s) for keeping its data. So for media, it's Zune; for MS Office it's SkyDrive or SharePoint, etc.
And third-party apps can provide their own choice of locations (so for example, among the book-reader apps, Freda offers you SkyDrive or DropBox, Bookviser lets you chose between SkyDrive or a dedicated Bookviser cloud store ... ).
Now of course if you prefer to think of your phone as a mass-storage device, WP7 won't suit you, and you should use a different OS (or unlock your WP7 phone if you must).

Hi! When i want to send file from other phone to my htc hd7, i see message "not supported". How do i repair this?
The easy answer is to take a seat and pray that M$ come up with the goods. In other words you cant send anything over BT at this moment in time.
With WP7, the only way to transfer files is via Zune, SkyDrive or email em to your device. That's the reason why they disabled access to the storage card. I can't believe I'm saying this, but, I'm used to it now.
Sent from my HD7 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
there's a way to view the storage in windows explorer. can be used to add files quickly

definetley not recommended. Easy way to screw up your sd card. WP7 does not have a file system as such, therefore transferring files can only be done via Zune and now in mango trough SkyDrive or email always. Read this answer from Microsoft: "WP 7 doesn't support any profiles that would allow you to transfer files via BT, so there is no point in trying to connect to a laptop. Your option is e-mailing a file to yourself.
In Mango you will have the option of saving the file to Skydrive via WiFi or Cell Data. Stil not directly to a laptop however.
Notice there is no file system, so no explorer that you could get to the file and say 'send via BT', no option within an open document menu that says 'send via BT'. There is no BT transfer directory, and if you could attach via BT the file explorer on your PC would not be able to navigate to a file to download, because, again, there is no visible file directory structure."

Hi,
Before I buy a Windows Phone 8 mobile (Nokia Lumia 920), Can I know if somethings that I consider them as issues in Windows Phone 7.8 are solved or not:
- Can WP8 send and receive files via Bluetooth?
- Can WP8 show a storage drive when I plug it into the USB?
- Can WP8 import and export media or pictures without the need of any software like Zune in WP7.X
Thanks
yes to all...
no more Zune... now you can simply plug with USB and use File Explorer on PC or use Windows Phone app...
http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/how-to/wp8
Mind you, the USB view is only of the documents and media libraries; you still can't (without hacks) view the application stores or anything like that.
Once again, a reminder: SEARCH BEFORE POSTING please! These are, as you say, Frequently Asked (and Answered) Questions! You don't need to ask them here too.

So I can't access isolated storage of apps? for example, downloaded videos of an undefined application couldn't be reached? or the new sdk allows the developer of that undefined application to stored his videos in a public library?
And about searching for these questions, I've searched alot, but no clear answers..
