So this is a well-known trick that has worked since the N4 but I wanted to share it anyway. If you go to check for the update and it still says up to date, try this method as it has just worked for my N5 and my N7:
Settings>Apps>All Tab>Google Services Framework>Clear Data>Go back to check update and it should work, if not try the steps again.
Like I said, this has worked for my previous N4, N5, and N7(2013). Each time, I tried the check update button alone at least 5 times in a row with no luck, then trying the trick and checking it worked for each device.
Oh and BTW, this trick if done EXACTLY like this DOES NOT invalidate the tokens like some claim. My play store and GMAIL are completely fine on both devices.
PS: Do this at your own risk/if your new to Android (Butthurt syndrome cured)
A Google employee also explained why you should not do this: http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/com...ear_data_for_google_service_framework/cdiymrp
Oh no you didn't.

I read that post before and have yet to find a single issue with my devices and never had an issue for my N4 when I did it so I don't see what the big deal is...there is another very similar method that does indeed mess up the tokens but it IS NOT the same by any means.
Please prove me wrong, I will check anything on my phone that you think isn't working now because I did this the quick and easy way instead of wasting my time sideloading...

i'm going to go out on a limb and guess that you don't work for Google, specifically the Android/Mobile division. but since you don't see what the big deal is (going against what a Google engineer says) we should all believe you.
this may not mess up your phone, but it wrecks havoc on the back end of Google's servers... when a Google engineer tells us all not to do something, then thoroughly explains why, it's probably best to heed his advice.
Tried this, took five data clears and it gave me the update. Thanks!

And this is how people who don't know better come here to XDA and mess up their devices because they follow bad advice that they read. Don't do this. It can have unintended consequences and according to Google has absolutely no effect on when you will receive an OTA.

What I am saying is that it doesn't matter how many people like you swear that it works. The people who actually work on Android say it doesn't and that it can have bad consequences. And anyone who actually wants the update can simply sideload it with absolutely no ill effects if they want to force the update onto their devices early. There is absolutely zero reason to do what you swear works.

The reason to do it is to save time and hassle of doing all the steps needed for side loading, but no worries, I got the update faster and easier than anyone who side loaded with ZERO consequences to me..:good:, your Google knee pads must be pretty worn out by now huh?
Or you can just wait for the update. I'm still on 4.4 and happy about it. 4.4.1 brought radio issues, and 4.4.2 also seems to have a few bugs. Hopefully by the time I get the OTA, the bugs will be fixed.

The problem is you don't know if it does. Because the GCM id changes, things like push messages from different apps will likely stop working (maybe permanently if they don't properly handle a changing id). You might not of noticed this much in the past because not a lot of apps utilized GCM push messages. However, more and more apps are using them today.
It's amazing that people will ignore advice from the people that have written the actual software. Just don't do it. The worst part about doing it is that you may not even know that something has messed up because its not obvious.
Thanks worked for me
Took me straight from 4,4 to 4,4.2 after 4 attempts
Anyone else still stuck on 4.4?
I have decided not to root my phone or flash any rom that has not been directly issued to my phone by Google. I'm still too happy with my device to mess around with that.
Therefore, I decided to create a thread for the people who are still using 4.4 because they haven't got the update yet. I'm in Malta... Anyone else?
What's better than the mutual anticipation for something new, right?
Sidenote: will the update fix Google Now not working on some devices?

I think you should at least consider rooting, the benefits of that are countless. I just re-wiped my phone to stock+root so I can just sideload the 4.4.2 update.

Because it hasn't rolled out to everyone yet. Give it time if you don't want to sideload it.
I am on 4.4 and I could have done sideloading, but I don't care much. Been doing enough nightlies with i777 (ATT SGS2) until last month when it died. I like the pure G experience more than I thought (I thought I would go for CM11 immediately after I get N5 then Omni) and I see not much issue with 4.4. I don't use my phone to take a pic much - I have Fuji XE-1 and Canon 5D for that.
I will get it when I get it. Who knows.. Google might have really started nightlies and 4.4.3 is around the corner.
Edit: Well, it looks like they have decided to give it to me just now.
I just got my 4.4.2 ota update yesterday. Chose not to sideload like I did for the 4.4.1 update. My N4 got the ota update on Mon night (it's stock, not rooted). To some degree, it's all just a crap shoot.

There are just different roll-out schedules. Let me put it this way, I was on custom recovery and rooted, and saw I had 4.4.2 update (was on 4.4). So not wanting to mess anything up I went complete stock, though when I rebooted I saw I no longer had it regardless of pressing the update button a million times. So I just ended up side loading it. The reason why it probably was not there, is probably this:
Why is clearing Google Services Framework data is a bad idea?:
There is a myth that has been around for a few years that clearing data in Google Services Framework will get you the OTA faster. Android Engineer Dan Morrill has taken to reddit to explain why NOT to do this and why the method I've described in this thread is the best way to get your update quickly.
Quote:
Doing this changes the primary ID by which Google knows your device. As far as the servers are concerned, the device was basically factory reset. There are many downstream effects of this, but a big one is that this invalidates the tokens used by any app that uses GCM (which is nearly all the Google apps, and a ton of third-party apps.)
How apps react to GCM IDs changing varies by app. With Play Store you have to log out and log back in, I think Gmail usually handles it transparently eventually but won't get new mail notifications for a while, etc. Some apps you may have to clear data on to recover. All apps will simply stop getting GCM push-messages, until they get a new GCM ID; some do this frequently, others rarely, and some apps use the GCM ID as an ID on their own servers (as it is opaque and basically random), so other things besides push messages may not work.
Nothing bursts into flames, but it makes a ton of nuisances on the device, including some that can look pretty mysterious. Your mileage will vary depending on what apps you use.
All of this can be avoided by just doing an 'adb sideload' if you are impatient. -Dan Morrill

I am assuming it was no longer valid for me because my ID changed when I wiped my phone. So with that being said, your choices are to either wait, or side load.
4.4 as well ..I'll get the update eventually. No rush here.

From the sheer number of posts showing problems with sideloading, I recommend waiting for the OTA update. Why risk so many issues and buggy software just to get an update a few days earlier?

common miss-conception.
sideload is just a different channel to put the damn OTA zip on your phone. there is no higher / lower rate of issues than getting the actual OTA, you will be in the same boat.
Got tired of waiting in Dallas yesterday. I know...patience is a virtue but no a strong point of mine. Wanted to check the camera out so I side loaded both updates early last night.
My N5 has been working like a champ. Camera and speaker are definitely improved!

There are no problems with sideloading if one hasn't messed with their phone. Issues arise when one tries to sideload the OTA and they have modified files in /system.
I was using 4.4 ( unrooted ) totally original system, and got 4.2.2 update a few hours ago. I'm in Hamilton ON, Canada.

Hello,
Over the next week, we’re launching two new apps that simplify Google Wallet’s most popular features.
Android Pay
Android Pay, which makes paying with your phone a breeze, will roll out over a short period. Once it’s available to you, your Wallet will update to Android Pay and you’ll just need to set up your credit or debit cards in the new app. Any loyalty programs, gift cards, or offers you had in Wallet will show up in Android Pay.
Google Wallet
Once you’ve updated to Android Pay, you’ll need to get the new Google Wallet to keep sending money and managing the Wallet Card. Plus, a new feature will let you quickly cash out with a debit card when receiving money. Your Wallet Balance will appear in the new app and, as always, at wallet.google.com.
Until Android Pay is available, you can keep using your current Wallet app as usual.

Indeed, but just remove it and put wallet back. I'm sure we will get it in a update.
The issue is that Google Play Services checks if you have an unlocked bootloader. If you're bootloader is unlocked then it will fail the check and you cannot use Android Pay. Somebody needs to figure a way around the bootloader check, until then Android Pay will only work on stock ROMs with a locked bootloader.

Has nothing to do with bootloader being unlocked. It checks your ROM against a database of "valid" ROMs that are signed / approved (not modified in a way they deem bad (root setting in CM dev settings). I took my OPO which has an unofficial CM12.1 ROM on it and flashed the official signed CM12.1 BACON for it. Bootloader was still unlocked and root not installed yet. Android Pay setup successfully. Backed up the App+Data with Titanium backup and restored my unofficial ROM. Restored the app+data. Saw my complete account for a second before the 'add new card' window came back.
TL;DR: It's using the SafetyNet API upon launch of the app and during card add. Fails on launch? Overlays window with add card ui. Fails on adding card? Gives error.

I didn't buy phone outright within one hour of taking it home I was boot loader unlocked , sim unlocked and rooted. No need to call t mobile for anything. I only booted the stock operating system once. Which was only because it was required step in the process. They asked me for help in setting up my phone. I sure if you can remove Google play services and seemed to think the phone wouldn't work without Google play services.
I get the desire for RCS,but it's barely used still... I could see it mattering in the future, but as of right now, meh... I got mine unlocked by sweet talking a rep, but MSM tool is great too! As much as I love the Google feed, I simply have a shortcut for it on my home screen so I can quickly go to it if needed... Honestly, the international variant works so much better for me! Sadly, TMO really restricts software updates for so many Android manufacturers, even aside from OnePlus. By the time TMO approve a software update, new patches and updates have already released on the mainstream side.
Wow...figured someone would have mentioned it by now...but anyway. Nova Launcher has a Google Feed plugin where you can just swipe right and you have the Discover feed. No root required.
As for RCS...not that big of a deal for me. I'm using International on my TMO 6T because I got tired of the SLOWWW updates.
I'm confident the T-mobile techs have noticed your demands here on XDA. They are surely working on your requests.

Yeah, I know about the alternatives but they are just not the same as having a dedicated stock launcher with the feed built in. It just seems cleaner to me.
Right now though, I do admit I cant use RCS because no one I know has it. So I went to Beta 9 and am using CPL with the plug in.

What does sim unlock mean in terms of updates? I am not sure if my sim is locked or not no proper method of testing but omni or carbon ROMs update just fine without official sim unlock. I only used the stock ROM long enough to boot the thing to fastboot to flash the international ROM. I did this inside the t mobile store while they processed the return of my wife's iPhone ten pro or what ever it was. They didn't seem to mind. Odd they let me do it with out the phone being processed yet. Mine was rooted and boot loader unlocked before I got my receipt. Their system was down for processing returns so I was there about an hour.

Yeah but I would think that the advantages of having newer/faster updates outweigh having to use another launcher or having RCS. Honestly, the OnePlus Launcher leaves a lot to be desired. I got rid of it almost immediately after I got the phone after I saw its huge lack of customization. Used Nova Launcher for years and love it. I won't use these betas though. I use my phone all day and just don't wanna run into annoying bugs lol. Hopefully we get a big new stable update soon.
RCS isnt something I really *NEED*. I can see when a message was delivered...but I'm sure we'll get RCS eventually.

Yeah but I would think that the advantages of having newer/faster updates outweigh having to use another launcher or having RCS. Honestly, the OnePlus Launcher leaves a lot to be desired. Yeah, I can understand where you are coming from. However I would prefer the T-Mobile software. Each person has there own prerogative. Mine is T-Mo.

I am waiting on my token so I can get off this slow update T-Mobile schedule. I finally got tired of waiting so I called them up and told them I need sim unlock they did it even without phone payoff.

What's everyone's view of rooting the pixel unlocked version? What features won't work? I know knox for samsung trips when unlocking. Is it the same concept with Pixels? My last device similar was a nexus 6 so yeah..

Any feature that relies on Safetynet won't work and there is simply no way around that.
With Samsung, KNOX is a "fuse" that gets tripped so after you unlock the bootloader there's no going back. It'll forever know the bootloader has been unlocked at some point which messes with certain features (depending on make/model). With the Pixel phones you can flash the stock software and then re-lock the bootloader if you want. Once re-locked the OS sees the factory state and everything works as usual. Just make sure you've got the stock software flashed before you re-lock the bootloader or you risk bricking the device.
As a side note, with biometric security, make sure you've properly logged out of your Google account and removed all stored fingerprints or faces BEFORE you unlock. The unlocking process will wipe the device but your biometrics are still stored. If that happens you have to go through the setup process without biometrics and then perform a "proper" factory reset within the Android OS in order to get biometrics working again.
Of course the Pixel 5 is a new phone, so I'm giving this info based on currently released devices. There are always risks when you alter the factory state so be warned. There's a phrase my old boss used to use: "Pioneers take the arrows, settlers take the land." Not very PC but the underlying concept is sound.
I'll root asap. These days, I use it mainly for effective Adblock. The occasional app goes wonky, but it's a game of cat and mouse with safety-net.
YMMV etc

The cat and mouse game is over, Google won. With hardware backed encrypted key negotiation it is no longer possible or feasible to beat. TNMTV (There's No Mileage To Vary)
That doesn't mean you can't root, just that there are consequences. For me, those consequences far outweigh any perceived benefit of having root access. I won't be rooting any more phones.

What's the best adblocker for a non-rooted phone right now?
Guys, since Android 9 you don't have to root in order to adblock. Just use the private DNS option together with something like nextdns.io . It's also battery efficient, since it's not a VPN.

We'll see what happens because, as you make clear when you include experiences, MAV (Mileage Always Varies).

True, but when I tried that after 9's release it wasn't particularly effective or at least not as effective as Adaway w Magisk's systemless solution. Maybe I'll give it another go on the P5.

Blockada, but download the App from the developer Website (play store Version doesnt get Updates Quick)
Pixel 5 will be the first device i dont plan to unlock+root, most benefits of rooting are gone in the last years because they got baked into Android. For adblocking there is Blockada which is as good as rooted adblock. I dont need a custom rom with stock clean Android and monthly Updates anymore. For debloating you dont need root, just a PC so i am going to deactivate most Google Apps.
Adblock so has a non-root version now.

Prediction: I'll eventually die of old age and you still won't be passing Safetynet. ☺

If you know what you are doing there is no issues with Android 11, Magisk and safety net.
I can still use Google Pay and my banking apps without modules and nonsense coding. Just use Magisk and that is it. Oh of course you will need to hide a few apps in the Magisk settings.

One thing to keep in mind is warranty and insurance (if you have insurance) claims.
If you have to use the warranty or insurance and you are unable to revert to factory default then warranty and insurance claims will be a huge pain.

Anything is possible, we go through this year after year with new updates to the software.
Google has always aloud its devices to have an unlocked boot loader and to be developed.
I personally don't see Google closing down its development. If they do, they will be out of the phone business. Most peeps buy the Google device for the freedom of development. I for one would buy something different if I could not root anymore.
Now for other manufacturers, it is a lot harder for them because they have there own software for their hardware and it is not compatible with the Google OS.

The Verizon versions of the Google Pixel 3Xl were locked down. I wouldn't say Giggle always allowed phones to be rooted. However, the ones sold by Google were rootable.

You are right. Verizon versions of Google devices will always be locked down.
If I remember correctly the last and only time that version allowed a Google unlocked device was a Samsung/Google Galaxy Nexus.

You said your not rooted right? You can still force basic key attestation (only needed for some devices), change device fingerprint, etc. Lots of things to do to pass safety net at the moment. Has worked fine for me ever since topjohnwu releaased that news.

Hardware attestation does not prevent you from unlocking your boot loader, and it does not prevent you from rooting. What it does do is make passing Safetynet impossible if you are rooted, unlocked boot loader.
This is not something that will one day be worked around. The days of passing Safetynet on a rooted device are behind us.
