Hi all,
I am losing my mind trying to figure out how to make the lag and stuttering stop. I have exchanged my hand set, bought new batteries, tried several roms (stock lollipop, stock MM, DU, TekX, CM, DynamicPop, CleanRom, Emotion, etc), tried several kernels, reformatted sd card, etc and the only one that does not stutter and lag is Dirty Unicorns 5.1.1 but I wanted to move up to MM. When I say lag, I mean for everything; typing, scrolling thru settings menus, even the boot animation stutters sometimes. It locks up for a sec or so at most each time so it is not unusable but is annoying the hell out of me. Is anybody else dealing with this? Does anybody have any idea how to fix this? I am at a total loss and would love some feedback. Thanks in advance.

No. My phone is fine. Was Dirty Unicorn 5.1.1 on a specific kernel when it was working (smoothly)?

For DU 5.1.1, I just left it with the default kernel that DU loads in.

Still has lag with or without sd card. Could a sim card possibly effect performance?
I just completely wiped and reflashed stock MM build EPE3. It even lags during the initial set up where you agree to terms, put your name in, etc... It is just a choppy frustrating experience all around.

I suppose it is possible... Yeah Ill give an exchange another shot at this point.
You should not have any issues with lag on a stock ROM anyway
I had a warranty replacement phone that would lag and stutter no matter what. I was able to get it replaced after getting too technical for support and threatening to leave TMO. My replacement was back to good... although it does have some lag at times until I restart it... but it's heavily modded and has lots of xposed modules that could cause leaks. The lag I have is nothing like what I experienced before.. I could not even play a local video without it stuttering every 15 seconds in video. The same thing with UI... it was like there was an interrupt or gpu issue. Even the stock everything would have problems.
No lag here. I did a factory reset while updating to MM and the phone has been performing really good since then. I'm running stock.
So I went to TMobile and they agreed to exchange it under warranty. Apparently the phone came with a lifetime warranty; nice. Big but, I have to wait 29 days for the replacement because it is heavily backordered. They offered me a S7 edge but I have to have a removable battery. Hoping that the whole Note 7 disaster will be the end of Samsung releasing solid handsets.

That sounds so far-fetched, however, I'm happy to know that this is going to work out in your favor.

I wish we had this in Jamaica as well. Our local carriers only exchange phones (under warranty) if you can prove that it was a factory defect.
My Stock TMO note4 had similar issues, Freezing, Lagging, Rebooting, Battery drain(ordered a new battery), I tried clearing cache and did a Factory reset, which did not help much.
But then it suddenly Bricked up, not responding to anything (hard bricked) . Called/walked into Tmo to see if they would be able to do anything (I'm still paying EIP) but they said its out of warranty and told me to get a new phone.
I had to unbrick it with the help of http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-tmobile/help/galaxy-note-4-n910t-fixed-hard-bricked-t3466547
Now I'm Just seeing if a new battery fixes my issues or I'll have to look into another solution; :fingers-crossed:
Sorry I have relatively not knowledge about phones and this is the first time I've looked into them.
Personally, a lot of lag was removed with taking out Knox and lookout. I installed the dev base that overdrive posted with most of the stuff taken out already and that was perfect. Just had to load the stock kernel for pogo. Most of the lag is gone.

Bad Kernel? Bad Radio? What?
I've used quite a few different ROMs. (Enom, Kang [CM], MIUI, and most recently, Rodriguezstyle's miui.)
But, the problem keeps happening, despite wiping between each ROM.
is it the radio? or the kernel? I think it might be, but I'm fairly certain I have the right kernel...and I upgraded my radio when I went to Froyo...
Gah.
I dunno about the kernel, but from what I've heard, if you have the wrong radio your n1 will be bricked. So I guess it's not the radio.
It's not a problem, I've been living with it. It's just rather annoying...
Maybe it's an app I have installed? Or things aren't...done right? Augh idk.
Change the Kernel and that will fix it, pershoot's worked the best for me.
Do you have to pull the battery when it reboots?

Not that I'm aware of. I don't even have setcpu installed anymore.
So unless the roms themselves overclock, then no. I upgraded my
kernel, but it has done a random shut off once since then. But it's
not that often. Not as often as it was at least.
Do you have more than one battery to try? My phone locked up or randomly rebooted several times a day when I was using Cyanogen 6rc1, but it only did it with one battery and ran fine with the other. The problem went away after I updated CM though.
My theory is that my "bad" battery is damaged slightly enough that it conflicted with something particular in that rom (also happened with 3-4 different kernels). I don't know anything about batteries, but if that's accurate, I don't see why a battery couldn't be damaged enough to conflict with all roms.
It doesn't sound like your problem exactly, but might be one of the simpler things to try, especially if you have a spare or could borrow one or something.
Try to extract the SD-card and Power ON the phone without it. If the phone works
well in that condition, problem solved.
Something like this happens to me one time, all I do was to format the entire SD-card
in my iMac with the Disk Utility, filling all the space with zeros (0) for be sure all the
data was erased correctly. Then I make the partitions again, flash a ROM and all
is fine now.
Good luck!
I had the same problem. Phone would reboot during many tasks. This would happen with any ROM even stock. I sent the phone to htc and they changed the motherboard under warranty. I noticed it first started to happen with robo defense and then other apps such as YouTube or browsing the net. I wasn't able to use the phone while it was charging or it would reboot.

This is my suggestion as well. A friend of mine had this problem. There was a corrupt video on his sd card that caused the entire issue.
The story is I was having a lot of general problems with my Sprint HTC One. I was using it with CyanogenMod 10.1 and I noticed it was getting VERY warm. I then noticed that the battery was at 21%, I had hardly used it all day. It would normally have been around 94% percent. So I was shocked. Then I noticed that is would make weird clicking and "eek" noises when I would browse the Operating system. It would make an especially annoying noise when I would turn on the LED Camera light. I also noticed that the battery would drop about 1 percent ever 30 seconds.
I immediately shut it off and plugged it into my charger (AC). I opened up ClockworkMod and wiped my cache and dalvik cache and then did a factory reset from ClockworkMod. The problems still occured. I then tried flashing an Earlier version of CyanogenMod 10.1. The problem still occured. So I let my battery charge up to 50% (it took a especially long to charge, it would actually lose a charge while charging at times) and then used RUU tool to flash it to Complete Stock. That got rid of the weird noises caused during the operating system use. But the battery continued to run hot and take especially long to charge (somtimes the battery level actually was dropping). I then installed an app to control the frequency of the CPU. It was set to always run at 1.7GHz. So I fixed that and made the minimum Frequency the lowest option and the Max Frequency 1.7GHz. That solved the charging problem.
I left it to charge over night and by the morning it was at 100%, so I unplugged it and turned it off. I thought I had solved everything. I left the phone alone for about 4 hours and when I checked on it, it would not boot whatsoever. I could not not even get into the Bootloader! Then I plugged it back into the charger to find out that the Orange charging indicator LED would NOT light up! So for now, it is just sitting in the charger without the charging indicator light lit up.
I would also like to mention that I am not the original owner. I bought this phone used. It does not have the normal Sticker on the back of the phone to indicate the Serial Number etc. And since I am not the original owner, I do not believe I qualify for a replacement warranty. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

If you are under service they should. Phone is still under manufacturer warranty. If you don't have insurance, worst case scenario you pay $50 for a refurb/new phone. Of course that's if they can't repair

But will they still replace it if I'm not using it with a plan? I bought it from someone else and I never re-activated it.
I've called sprint and since I don't have the phone under my account and since it is not activated, they will not repair it. So a replacement/repair is out of the question. So is there anyway I can fix this myself? I'm familiar with flashing and all that stuff, so any of that stuff is just fine.
There is no way you can repair this yourself.
And eek! This problem's back? What? You were using the latest nightly too?
And since you have no warranty (pretty sure its non transferable), you should look up JTAG services. $60. It may not be as clean as you'd like, though. Besides, HTC repair service wouldn't fix your device for free because, even though the device is bricked, they can see your tampered boot loader. They charged me $200. I probably won't root again.
This has happened to at least a dozen people, but all if them were before July 3rd. This is kind of disturbing.

Hey, it's always worth a try. I always used the latest nightly. I updated whenever they pushed a new update. I had it running CyanogenMod 10.1 Nightly for over a month without a single problem. I've been using it on my Galaxy Nexus for over a year. This is the first time it's ever given me a problem.
I'll look into the JTAG, but if anyone else has any ideas I'm up to try anything. The bright light while holding Volume Down + Power didn't work for me.
OP.... wow. Just wow.
So you have the device's processor spinning at 1.7 GHz constantly, and you are wondering why it is warm? You are also running a custom OS with a myriad of bugs and issues, and you are wondering why now your device isn't working properly.
Unbelievable. You shouldn't be playing around with its powerful hardware if you have absolutely no clue what you are doing, don't you think?

I did know what I was doing. I was running a stock build flashed by RUU. So I assumed that it would have a decent frequency management (that should be a safe assumption). I know what I'm doing when it comes to android's. I'm not stupid enough to have the CPU running at the full 1.7 GHz. Immediately after it started getting warm again that was the first thing I checked. Normally I underclock my devices. I usually have my Galaxy Nexus run at 700 MHz. I've also been using Nightly builds for my Nexus for over a year and I've found it to be stable enough to decide to flash it on my HTC One. And until 2 nights ago, It was perfectly stable.
I've done no fault on my own. I personally blaim HTC for pumping out a ROM that let it run at 1.7GHz 24/7, even unrooted.
Also to include, while I was running CM 10.1 I had my CPU set to a minimum of ~300MHz (forget exact frequency) and a maximum of 1.7GHz. I'm not stupid enough to set it to run at 1.7GHz 24/7 for any reason whatsoever. I was shocked when I saw that it had been running at 1.7GHz 24/7 (had only been running for an hour in sleep mode at that point before I fixed it).

10.1 is very close to stable...
Except, you know, the bricking issue.
Where does it say the device was maxed out on purpose? Stock CM is supposed be pretty good at CPU management.
So now we know what is causing the bricks. The CPU is literally self destructing. We should have deck look into it.
I'm considering selling it to technollo.com . With a promo code, they will pay $70. I only payed $230, so I might as well just cut my losses.

Really sucks man.
Again, just goes to show. If you can't afford to lose/fix your device, then you shouldn't be rooting it and stuff. HTC makes no guarantees that the phone will be able to run AOSP ROMs. The devs just do their best. Phones are getting more and more complicated, and it gonna get harder and harder to make stable ROMs for them.
Looks like this is your only option... maybe you can go and get yourslef an N5 when it comes out as a replacement?

Well I think it's worth the risk. Usually I can fix nearly any software issue possible. However, this is a hardware issue. I love modifying my devices and I won't stop anytime soon. My Personal computer currently has full liquid loop (GPU + CPU) that I setup and maintain that I am proud of. Sometimes things just go wrong. That's no reason to give up. For now I'll just continue to use my Galaxy Nexus until I find it necessary to upgrade.
However if anyone would be interested in purchasing this HTC One from me, just message me and we could try to work something out.

at least you got a tablet mine has been in asus repair centre 2 months now. they had it more than i have.
Never buying asus again.
bought in nov resetting and other random issues update didn`t fix sent away. 1 month comes back now it`s worse. send it back sd card issue keeps remounting every 30 secs send back. they deny they can replicate issue even with vid i sent them. (apparently they were being kind and didn`t charge me labor fee for looking at tablet to find no fault.)
Got tablet back tried 4 diff sd cards diff sizes format all same issue recorded. whole thing sent back now they admit issue and will fix (1 month to get that far).
however the reset issue and garbled screen also recorded is not replicate-able. ..... 3 weeks latter they still have it and can never answer my question about wtf is going on and refuse to just swap it over with a new one.
so i have had tablet about 3 months they had it 5 months mind my french but fu ck ing useless service. it will be out of warranty before i use the damn thing.
what annoys me the most is this was bought specifically for on the go as i run my business remotely and am an avid bike user so carting around a crazy heavy laptop annoys the **** out of me.
Anyway lesson learnt don`t buy asus because if you get a **** one it will never get back to you working.

I was just curious if anyone has successfully done this. Did they give you and trouble? Did you do it at the T-Mobile store? Did you have yo pay anything? Mine doesn't really lag, i would more so call it stuttering. For example, when i scroll using tapatalk it isn't smooth, it stutters a lot. Once in a while exploring it different apps or system there is some noticeable stuttering. Again, it is for a long period of time.. just slightly. They'll charge you a $50 restocking fee as the return will fall under "buyer's remorse." You don't need to give a specific reason other than you don't want it. There's no way of avoiding the restocking fee on a return that leads to a full refund, even if it's defective.
Hmm and if i pay $50 for a new device there is no guarantee the problem will be solved. Interesting. .
I didnt have to pay cause it was under 14 days for store and on 21 days if u do online. You could get another phone or same different color I didn't pay any fee. If u pass that time I would do a warranty exchange if u have jump it is $5 processing fee

UPDATE:
Well, as i was using Odin and going back to stock I tested again and to my surprise the lag/stutter was gone. I tested everything where I was experiencing this. All gone. Then I rerooted and added custom recovery and still good to go. Weird.. maybe Samsung had a bad "flash" when building my Note 4.
With that being said, to whomever is having the same experiences I was, this is what I recommend! BTW, T-Mobile was going to do a free exchange due to buyers remorse. I called them back and said I would not be coming in
Were you using Wanam Xposed?
I haven't but I will. I already tried using other ROMs, factory resetting, everything. Absolutely love the phone, but TouchWiz kills the phone for me. It slows the phone down a lot (in my case at least) and it stutters. So, I'll be returning it and getting a Nexus 6.

If you're within the 14 or 21 days they have to exchange it if something is wrong with the phone. It's not buyer's remorse.
Unless of course you want a different color then that's different.
I think I might return mine because I've had lag almost everywhere from home screens to apps, Internet and even videos.
I'm still completely stock, never had this type of issues with my Note 3. ****, even disappearing icons, look at the bottom messaging app.

I was wondering, for those that have exchanged it.
Did the replacement work out better for you??
I'm debating whether returning it or just rooting it and slapping a rom on. But I don't want to keep it if it's the actual phone.....

The note 4 is a monster. The stock rom is the issue. Now that we have custom roms all is well. I'm on firekat. .....this phone is beast. I'm running about 10 xposed mods, over clocked to 2.9ghz, battery life is 50% better than stock even with all that jazz going on and I just added this SD adapter now I'm noting just over 1tb of space with rw speeds around 60. Font return the device I was having the same issues til yesterday

For all the people claiming there is no lag, THERE IS LAG. But only if you root it and if you don't properly fix the S health issue.
I thought all those people were crazy for claiming there is lag until I experienced it myself. Do the clear data/reboot method on s health and then go back on wanam and check the option to fix s health. That removed my lag
And also there is a lag on the recent apps hard key, it's pretty slow just like on my S5. On my S5 I enabled soft keys/on screen keys and that lag was gone but the lag was still there for the hard keys on my S5.
I tried enabling soft keys on the Note 4 but it keeps crashing "system UI" every 2 seconds, I am able to put soft keys on my s3-s5/htc m7 but how come not on the note4?
*UPDATE
So I contacted Tmo today just so they can note what's going on so I have no issues exchanging it.
The rep recommended to take out my SD card and try it without. And if I wanted to, to do a reset.
I had used the same SD card since my S2 Days so I didn't think nothing of it when I started using with my Note 4.
Anyways, long story short. SD card is out, factory reset it and now my lag is practically all gone. I've been using for about 5 hrs now.
So it was the SD card causing all if not most of the problem.
I'm going to format my SD card with this phone and hopefully I won't need a new SD card lol.
Anyways, something for you also having lag to try it out in case you have a similar situation as me.

My Galaxy s21 has been crashing constantly for about a day now. I thought maybe it was just an app or something causing the issue so I factory reset my device but nothing changed its still crashes at least once every 5 minutes. At this point I am thinking its a hardware issue. Any help would be appreciated.
If it's returnable, get a cash refund. This phone is sounding more like a dog (no offense to K-9s intended) more each passing day. Multiply defects.
It may be a bad firmware load but who cares(?) if you can get your money back or at least a new replacement.
Sammy's done nothing but drop the ball this year...

Have you tried booting into safe mode to see if the phone is stable then? That would help indicate if it's a rogue thrid party app.
The Twitter app crashes and slows down for me,it's been happening since I got the phone. Not sure if it's the app or a bug in the OS.

Trash app. Ditch it.
FB, WhatsApp, LinkedIn, Instagram none of that crapware runs on my phone ever.

I'm on Twitter all the time though, used Flamingo before and that's good but I like the features on the official app. It runs like sh** though.

Having it running as an app is completely unacceptable.
Worse...
The platform itself is heavily censored. Like FB most of your information is best keep private. These platforms have ruined many lives and careers. They are purveyors is disinformation and are political in nature.
Known data miners and abusers.
No. Don't feed the beast.
You're far better off on smaller forums.

I haven't tried safe mode yet but I would assume a factory reset would be almost as good. Oddly the problem seems to be gone now no clue why though. Hopefully it doesn't come back.

It most likely will reoccure. Always best to find the root cause.
Factory resets should be reserved for after firmware upgrades and malware infections that can't be eradicated.
Occasionally a poorly written apk will alter hidden setting values permanently on uninstalling it. Sometimes you can reinstall that app and correct those values otherwise... factory reset time.
Here's an update incase anyone is curious. Basically I contacted Samsung support and they told me I could bring it to a local repair shop to get it fixed. The first time I brought it they reflashed the firmware but that didn't work it was still constantly crashing. When I brought it back they replaced the motherboard. That worked but sadly cell service does not work. When I brought it back they Basically just said that I should get a replacement device but Samsung was "out of stock" so there was nothing they could do. Now I'm Basically stuck with a non functional galaxy s21.

How loathsome of Samsung. *Grrrrrrr*
Ask for a full refund check.
That's what Samsung should have offered rather than have you babysitting a paperweight.
Lean on them. If purchased with a MC or Visa card file a claim. You will have to return the device for the bank to issue credit if they can.
Did they replace the C port PCB?

Part of the problem is I bought it from t-mobile so its still being paid off and neither Samsung or t-mobile will replace/refund me for the device. And no the c port was not replaced.

Also they gave me one option to send it in with Samsungs mail in repair. But that's going to take weeks and still probably won't do anything.

A bad or mismatched C port PCB can kill the internet at least on the Note 10+
They may have used the wrong mobo variant.
Tech can be inept buffoons. Those little part numbers have to match exactly...
Lean on T-mobile, they are in breach of contract.
Contact their retainment dept, escalate the case, lean all over them like a cheap suit.
Contact your State Attorney General's office and the BBB. File complaints.
Completely unacceptable.
Final update: Just got my phone back from Samsung and after countless tech support calls and countless attempted repairs it's finally fixed! Everything seems to be good so far.
