so i live in pakistan and i bought this used htc desire 626 s sprint variant when i booted into bootloader mode saw that its bootloader was already s-off and boot loader unlocked is this normal ?
It is possible someone already unlocked the device maybe with sunshine.
Sunshine wasn't compatible with my 626s so I ended up getting a xtc-2 clip.
Cost me $140 US currency.
Anyway I have 4 HTC devices so it would have cost $100 to use sunshine so I just got the clip.
Hopefully I can hook up some phones locally for $10 a pc and recover my expense.
Normally the device you have would not come S-off. You got lucky.
not so lucky when we dont have CM for 626s
I can tell it was unlocked with the xtc-2 clip.
In your pic I see the CHECK SMART SD. In your menu options.
I got that extra menu on my devices when I used the clip.
You should also be able to boot into FTM mode.
Power phone off. Hold volume up button in and press power.
Keep holding volume up.
I am working on porting to custom roms.

I am seriously looking at buying the HTC One, which would be my 1st android device, following recent years of apple devotion...
From what I read, there is a lot of noise of putting "stock android" on the device. But more recently, there has been the Google Edition announcement.
So what are the options now then?
Buy on contract, and leave at that version running to the network carrier's upgrade plans? What choices will following this path mean for the official HTC Bootloader unlocking? The device would be SIM locked too I guess? Can I flash any image, I.e the upcoming GE image?
If I buy SIM free from a UK retailer, are there any differences to the above? Or will I need to get the phone direct from HTC as a GE device to get all this goodness?
I am pretty geek proficient, and would like to run to the quickest upgrade paths. But I'd also like to retain htc's low light camera performance on this device. I also recall Mr Leo Laporte recommending to buy it with HTC Sense on it, so you can always return to it if you don't like stock android...
Open to people's opinions too, but I'd like to understand the options above before making a large investment...
Thanks

You are better off buying the phone outright. If you get it on contract it might be sim-lock (might be but not sure). Plus it works out cheaper to buy it outright. If you buy the unbraned UK version then you will get updates like everyone else.
Or if you want to flash the GE (google edition) when it comes out then you will need to have S-OFF. As for unlocking the bootloader, you don't need to go through HTCDev and unlock your bootloader. You can just use the revone S-OFF method to unlock it and have S-OFF.

Thanks Rex
What is S-OFF?
The lack of discounts / subsidy for top of the lines phones means there is no benefit for buying either way, if you can. This would also be my preference but I am still assessing it all... SIM free does tend to make it easier with unlocking / jail breaking / rooting, but it seemed that HTCdev will allow you to it anyway. Part of my initial questions was if this was actually true, and the limits that may be in place..?

S-OFF (security OFF)
In order for you to be able to flash the GE you will need that at least. Because "I think" when GE image is out it won't be as simple as flash it to the HTC One and there you have a GE HTC One. I think it will be more to it than just flashing the GE image to the HTC one.

Hey guys,
So I have a VZW Moto X (from Motomaker) with an unlocked bootloader via the Chinese Middleman. UNFORTUNATELY crying today my phone took a tragic fall and has a nice crack in the glass all the way down from the top left corner. So I am going to take advantage of the Motorola free one-time replacement deal that they have for custom Moto X's.
My question is, when I get the new device and ship the old one back, do I need to worry about the fact that the bootloader is unlocked? I did replace the unlocked boot screen with the stock one and I am running a stock rom. Should I consider re-locking or would that just make it more of an issue?
Thanks!

i mean it probably doesn't hurt to give it a shot, but if they notice that the bootloader is unlocked they probably wont fix it and will send it back. or will charge you the $175 or whatever it is for a new screen. i think you'd be fine though, i don't think they will turn on the phone and check if its been rooted/unlocked. whatever you do, lets us know!

First, relocking wont help. There are 3 states the X bootloader can be in.... Locked, unlocked and relocked. We can only toggle to Unlocked and Relocked. This is displayed on the Bootloader/Fastboot screen. And the "unlocked warning" message in the stock LOGO.BIN will display when you are Unlocked and Relocked. So doing a fastboot oem lock wont change anything.
You should worry because unlocking the non-developer's bootloader *DOES* void the warranty, so if they wanted to, they could refuse the repair, or charge you for it. However, since cracking the screen isn't related, the likeliness of them giving you an issue is probably low.
One other thing to worry about is, will they repair yours, or replace it? I have a friend (doesn't post here) who had a cracked screen. They replaced the phone because the repair was too complex. If this happens, you'll need to buy another Bootloader Unlock code, and the Chinese Website/Middleman isn't as consistent as it was when it originally showed up.
They replace the phones. My sister's MotoMaker X screen cracked so Motorola sent her a code to build a new one.
I am going to get a z1 this week.
As you guys know, Sony has this bad habit of permanently locking the bootloader on their phones.(bootloader unlock allowed=no in service menu)
Obviously,I dont want a permanently bootloader locked one.
So, why does Sony do it?
And more importantly, is there a pattern to the locking or is it just some random-get lucky kinda thing where some miserable ass at the Sony factory randomly does this to get back at the world?
What should I do to make sure that I don't get a Bootloader Unlock Allowed=No version of the phone.
Im buying online from eBay so i cant check myself and the sellers wont do it as they don't want to open the seal
Is there any way to circumvent the lock / load non-signed kernels after boot?
You can only be sure if you buy one on amazon, directly from amazon. I have one from marketplace amazon and mine is permantly locked. If you buy one from ebay go sure that it have no sim lock and that you can give it back on first 14-days, so you can give it back, if it is permantly locked.
well you dont get that good of discounts from amazon. ebay sellers sell it real cheap and we can use coupons on ebay.
well i finally got someone who has opened the box. i might have to pay a little bit more(more than a little!) for it but its still worth it considering that it is the c6903 4g version which is not available here(we only have the c6902)
Thanks for the reply dude
I bought my Xperia Z1 from my carrier. Right now it says that I can't unlock the bootloader. The thing is, I've been looking for way to unlock it anyway. I've been seeing people saying different things about how to unlock it. I just way something clarified, though: is the bootloader somehow tied to the carrier or the SIM card? Can I unlock it by buying the SIM unlock key from my carrier?
Hello I bought an M9 in a local online store. When I received it today it was already opened! When I checked it is already in Marshmallow with 3.41.651.4. A quick google search says this software is from Sprint? But I bought I bought an international unlocked model.
So I checked the bootloader and it was locked, but already S-OFF! I then went to recovery and to my surprise TWRP booted. Also going to recovery I get this black splash screen with HTC logo on it. Is this normal? All the videos I watch entering the recovery they get white splash screen with green HTC logo.
Also the reboot menu is different. I have attached some images.
I also can not get 4G signal with it! will this work? http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-m9/general/how-to-change-network-bands-gsm-devices-t3135401 I think since Sprint ROM was initially loaded maybe I am having different baseband/modem?
Anyway I have successfully unlocked the bootloader, with this is fake?
Thanks!

First of all, this is M7 forum, so you're in a wrong place.
Second - it's not fake, it's a genuine HTC M9, but a used one. If it was fake, you wouldn't be able to unlock your bootloader via htc dev or any tool for HTC.
So, to conclude - you were scamed because you bought a second hand phone under impression it was new. Also, a Sprint version, and seller told you it was international. You figure out your next step - return it, or keep using it although it's not what you payed for
agreed with the guy above. since it's got s-off then either it really was an international phone but whoever had it before you messed with it flashing a different firmware, ROM, and recovery, Or whoever sold it to you lied about the fact that it's a used sprint phone.
Whatever you do next is up to you. But next time you buy something online (not just a phone), I would advise you to choose a reputable eBay seller with a clear return policy.
Best of luck.

And if it was fake, there wouldn't even have an HTC bootloader loaded on it
Unfortunately this "buy an international variant - get a Sprint/Verizon variant" scam is pretty common, even from reputable Ebay sellers, who most of time dont know much about the phones they are selling and use the wrong information. This is exactly what happened when I bought my M7, checked the PID# to be sure I was buying a M7_UL and got a M7_U.....
^True.. that's why a clear return policy is a must. You can change everything about this phone since it's got s-off, but the idea of getting something other than what you paid for sounds unacceptable to me.
