Why not ask before taking the OTA? We warned everyone to unlock their bootloader first or they may never be able to do it.

They WILL probably lock down the phone from the Sunshine exploit with the new update, and probably they'll lock it down for good this time. So if you want to unlock your phone, do it before the next update.

I wrote about it also, and I think the Sunshine team did also. That's just the first one I found.

You can't downgrade bootloader.
If Sunshine doesn't work with 6.0.1, you can only hope they have a trick up their sleeve they're not revealing yet.
Verizon has temporarily stopped the XT1254 OTA rollout due to all the bricked phones. Guess a year wasn't enough time for testing? (sarcasm)
But after they resume OTA rollout and after the full 6.0.1 XT1254 firmware is publicly released, then Sunshine team could safely unveil any update they may be holding -- IF they have anything.

Will there be a root method when we get the L OTA? And with locked bootloader?

Seeing that 5.0 source just dropped and moto hasnt even issues an update to l yet i think its far too early to say. But I think that chances are small with a locked bootloader seeing that the root method for the nexus 9 involves flashing a new bootloader. But like I said who knows.
Currently, we don't even have a way to root 4.4.4 on a locked bootloader, so once L drops on the X the chances become extremely slim. Rooting on the 9 involves flashing a different kernel that will allow the unsecured code to run.
If you are able to unlock your phone through whatever way, then you will probably eventually be able to root L. If you still have a locked bootloader, I wouldn't hold my breath.
The Nexus 9 isn't unlockable like other Nexuses (Nexii?)? What does this mean for the Nexus 6...?

I believe the N9 IS unlockable. However, to obtain root chainfire had to do more than usual. He wrote up the details on G+.

Thanks. Will this change when a custom recovery is available like TWRP that can simply flash root?

[Q] How do I root for Droid Turbo 5.1 without using mofo

Anyway to root this phone without paying money?

No, if there were a free way to do it, no one would pay to do it.
And if you have already taken the 5.1 OTA, you can't even pay to do it, there is no root option for you. Maybe in the future but not now.

If it were possible, I wouldn't have said it was impossible.
It is not possible to downgrade to the 4.4.4 bootloader and mofo.exe won't work on the 5.1 bootloader. It is not possible to root the droid turbo w/o paying even on the 4.4.4 bootloader.
Perhaps in the future someone will find an exploit in the 5.1 bootloader but for now, there is none.

There is a Temp root called King root that works for some people, but only on 4.4.4 to my knowledge. But it is not a real solution. Mofo.exe will let you flash specially made files to update to 5.1 and keep root if you did not take the OTA. Its worth the $20.

Maybe you could get a 4.4.4 device out of Verizon's warrenty program
Otherwise, if you've already taken the 5.1 OTA, you're SOL
Sorry if this is a necro, but there is still no root option for those who received a Turbo that has 5.1 preinstalled huh?
no
Just for the record I did receive a device on 4.4.4 today from the motorolla warranty program (aux port broke). So it is possible.

Unlocked bootloader for at&t moto x 2014

Hey does anyone know if or when the moto x 2014 will get its bootloader officially unlocked by Motorola. Was researching on the site and it seems as though Verizon models are getting their bootloaders officially unlocked. Since they said the carrier models aren't getting marshmallow they could at least unlock our bootloaders so wencan get root and flash some roms. Or if anyone knows how to get it done unofficially..... I'm all ears. Thanks
I'm unlocked on Verizon, but att I don't know if or when. If you haven't upgraded above 5.0 you can root with mofo and unlock with sunshine.

That's the thing, motorola never announced that verizon got it. It just magically started to work when someone tried to unlock his bootloader then they told all of us. There is no way to know if it will ever be able to be unlocked. But everyone can keep trying, maybe one day it will work.

Don't know of a way outside of unlock code from moto then. If you can gain root (at least temp root) sunshine will still unlock it. But haven't seen anybody figure it out yet for 5.1. Maybe keep an eye on kingroot see if they've got it yet.

A Sunshine team member said perhaps, but he has not yet examined the update thoroughly.
Sunshine right now says if you take the Motorola/Verizon Marshmallow update there are no promises. If you unlock bootloader prior to the update, you can still install the update -- either as OTA if you don't install TWRP or you can install TWRP-flashable version of the OTA from here.

Thanks @ChazzMatt you always on time and good explanation and good describe for every problems with the Droid Turbo this form without you it's me nothing

Is it safe to take the latest OTA for the droid turbo?

Hi. My droid turbo is currently on the September 1, 2016 security patch, build number MCG24.251-5. There is a system update available for a later security patch that I know fixes sunshine.
This update bugs me every time I restart my phone and I have to disable motorola update services every time.
There is also an issue where the volume control stays on the screen forever after adjusting the volume until I touch the screen. I was wondering if the latest update would fix that.
My main question is does sunshine support the droid turbo for the MCG24.251-5-5 build/latest security patch? If so, should I update?
Thanks.
If your bootloader is not unlocked, you should unlock your bootloader NOW. Do not take any updates past your current until you unlock your bootloader.
The next OTA (MCG24.251-5-5) -- which you mention -- blocks Sunshine.

Nothing "fixes" Sunshine, it's not broken. MCG24.251-5-5 BLOCKS Sunshine.
Why don't people UNLOCK their bootloader first chance they get? I don't understand waiting. Waiting for what? Then one day the OTA installs when you're not paying attention, and then you're locked down forever.
EDIT: IF your bootloader is already unlocked with Sunshine and you have TWRP installed, you can safely update to firmware which includes that OTA:
[ROM] MCG24.251-5-5 100% Stock
https://forum.xda-developers.com/droid-turbo/general/rom-mcg24-251-5-5-100-stock-t3565795
You would flash that with TWRP. Once your bootloader is unlocked and you have TWRP installed, you never need worry about "OTA" ever again. Any updates will be posted here in this forum, which you can flash easily via TWRP or other method.

If you're asking if the update will undo what Sunshine did and re lock your bootloader, the answer is no. It is safe to take the OTA ONLY if you unlocked BEFORE taking it.
