So, I bought my Roku 2 a few years ago to play news & other things in my shower TV when I'm bathing.
And rarely ever use it. Because when I turn on a TV news channel (any of them), a video starts playing and I set my volume based on that.
Then the next video starts playing and it's soooo quiet that I can barely hear it.
Then the next video starts playing and it's sooo LOUD that I'm scrambling for the remote control to turn down the volume!
And there are no mods to stabilize the Roku volume.
So I'm thinking of ditching it for a Chromecast.
Are there any apps/mods that can normalize/stabilize volume levels for Chromecast?
I realize there is nothing that can be done about the source volume, we're just out-of-luck there because every broadcaster has their own source/gain/processing/whatever setup.
But I'm hoping there is some root/other mod for the Chromecast that will take the source volume and try to maintain a certain dB through the various videos?
Actually, I've got the latest Chromecast and I don't think you can root it yet?
I haven't searched.
But the topic stands. Does anyone know of a way to "normalize" volume levels? Sort of like how some TV's have "night mode" to prevent explosions from sounding too loud and waking others up.

Hi!
I have an really annoying audio issue, I hope there's a solution.
Background:
Being an insomniac I use my phone w. in-ear-plugs (Bose IE2) to listen to audiobooks and watching videos until I fall asleep.
I bought the Note for the big screen and the awesome hardware audio/video support, and just for trying something new, (I've been using iPhones since it's first release but felt like upgrading from an iPhone 4 to an iPhone 4s wasn't worth it) so the Note is my first Android phone.
The Problem:
When playing audiobooks, videos and music at low volumes it's like the phone ”auto-mutes” when the source audio have low volume or total silence. Then there's a click or a static and a very short delay when the audio returns. It's really annoying when listening to i.e. audiobook where it's much silence, like between sentences and sometimes words.
It doesn't appear when listening to more moderate volumes, just in the bottom 20% of the volume slider.
I've tried a bunch of different players... it's all the same. Doesn’t matter if its a local file or LAN.
Gingerbread 2.3.6 XBKK4, not rooted or anything.
Anyone know of a cure for my phone, or a good sleep-therapist....
I am experiencing the intensely annoying sound cut out bug. This appears to occur under the following circumstances
1. Headphones plugged in only (not speakers or blue tooth)
2. The phone volume is fairly low 1-3
3. Music / Video is playing and there is a quiet passage e.g. music fading out, whispering in a film, sharp drop in volume of a song
The effect is that rather than playing the sound the sound completely cuts out.
My current suspicion is that it is something like a headphone amplifier power saving measure. Essentially cutting off the sound amplification if the system believes just white noise / hiss is coming through the headphones.
I have tons of music that triggers this issue (only permanently up tempo music such as dance and most pop do not trigger this issue), I have tested in Cyanogen, PA & SlimBean. Others have reported this issue in Stock ICS.
Does anyone know if the current Stock Samsung has this issue or not, before I attempt to get support from Samsung who presumably have done all their audio testing with Gungam Style and therefore have managed to miss this massive issue?
Been asking for a fix for this issue for ages, I'm either being ignored or nobody has a fix, thus can't be fixed.

Sadly there's no real solution to this annoying 'noise gate' problem, which I've noticed since ICS on every Stock or Custom Rom that I have tried on the N7000.
The issue is also discussed here: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=35861
For now, you only have two workaround options:
1. Get a pair of headphones with inline analog volume control. Crank up the volume on your device and lower it within the headphones.
2. Program a Tasker profile to play an inaudible sound that keeps the noise gate open (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35047527&postcount=25)
I've used option 2 before, but decided a few weeks ago to switch to 1 (with the Sennheiser CX 400-II).
Also I've noticed that the problem does not occur when streaming media audio via Bluetooth.
This is good advice, I have an inline seinheisser controls somewhere

Hi - I have this problem too and so do many others.
To my ears, it sounds like there is a noise gate being used on the headphone output to mask off system noise at low levels. Noise gates will close when audio drops below a certain threshold and you can use them to eliminate background noise during periods of silence in music. However, in this instance, it shuts down during quiet passages - especially when listening to classical tracks with a wide dynamic range.
IF it is a noise gate, it is likely to be implemented in the hardware (doing it in firmware wouldn't mask noise generated by the phones circuitry - which is he whole point). Consequently, there might not be anything that can be done to resolve the problem. However, it is possible that the phones firmware configures the audio chip during boot-up. This being the case, an industrious programmer might be able to do a few tweaks and disable or modify the behaviour of the gate. I hope so because all my music is on my Galaxy Note and it is painful to listen to at times!
That's the real reason I am here: is there anyone on this forum who knows enough to be able to write a fix for this as it appears that Samsung aren't listening? Some people report this problem on the Note 2 as well.

Damn it -- sorry to hear that about the Note 2, as I was thinking of upgrading to that. Hopefully the Note 3 will have it fixed, or I just might have to go to the S4
Yes, this bugs me immensely -- it affects music with soft passages (classical) at any volume level, and of course is irritating when listening to music at night. What I'd like to do is to find or make a headset or cord that supports the microphone and includes an analog volume control.
My N7000 has also this problem with every kernel and rom I tried. With Android 2.3.6 and 4.0 it was only happening with the videos, but after 4.1, it happens with the music too. So I think it can be fixed by software (I mean actually fixed, not the inaudible sound solution).
It's very annoying, I bought the note fot its big screen, to watch videos and now I can't do it because the sound sucks. Also I can't lisent to music anymore in the night...
Solution for annoying noise suppression!
This seems to be the solution:
Start 'phone', go into settings, and disable 'noise suppression'!
Seems to be working...
There is a patch that fixes the problem for my N7000 with OmniROM:
github.com gustavoss android_kernel_samsung_smdk4412 commit 3019675d57c4046c30f82d04ce41913150df0d6e
(Sorry for the distorted link, as a new user I am not allowed to post links yet...)
The question is: How to get it into CM, OmniROM, and co.?

Kind regards

I think I may have found what I suspect is a software bug and not I hope a hardware glitch.
I was listening to a track using the HTC Music player with my headphones (Linkin Park's 'From the Inside') and shortly into the powerful bassy intro, the sound perceptively dropped automatically.
The problem is repeatable as follows
Test 1
- After the volume has dropped off (after about 14 seconds) I rewound to the previous track where the sound restored to a normal level.
- I then forward to the 'Linkin Park' track where it starts off as before but then the volume drops at the same point in the track.
- Rewind to the previous track, play a bit, forward and same thing
Test 2
- Now if instead of rewinding to the previous track, I rewind to the start of the Linkin Park track after the volume has dropped, the volume does not re-adjust but remains at the decreased level and the song plays through with no further volume adjustment, but at a much lower level off course.
In Summary, it's only restored if I go back to another song but always drops off automatically.
I repeated all of the above with Beat's audio on and off with no impact.
I'm pretty sure there have been automatic volume adjustments before but I have not been able to quantify this until tonight since I'm testing some headphones. It's almost as if the phone decides mid track, "this is too bassy" or "too loud so I'm adjusting" to a lower volume.
Very annoying issue, particularly since the volume drops to an unacceptably low level so I need to manually increase.
Has anyone else experienced this or is a settings issue I've missed somewhere.
As an update, I just tried playing the same track using 'Play Music' and there was no automatic volume adjustment.
Track still adjusts in the HTC Music App at the same point.
I guess that means I'll be using Google's app unless I can get a fix for this
Shame since I prefer the look and feel of HTC's app.

Bump...
Anyone seen this or able to replicate ?
I coincidentally stumbled upon this thread a few hours ago because I was having a different sound related issue and wanted to check the forums first before starting a new thread about it.
Now, seconds ago, while listening to some songs via the stock HTC music player the same bug you describe here happened to me too.
I instantly remembered your thread I read hours before and compared your problem report to what just happended to me.
Just like you I experienced a sudden drop in overall volume that wouldn't go away by itself or rewinding or fast-forwarding the song. Reloading the song by skipping to the next or going back to the previous one helped. The volume drop happened for me at second 49 so I started the song over and was watching very closely to the timeline and waiting for second 0:49 and the drop to come. However it didn't happen and the volume kept its level.
So in my case this bug doesn't seem to be related to the song or a special second or minute in it.
To me it sounded like the same type of volume decreasing like when you receive a message or notification which would change the volume's focus for a second but without turning it up again afterwards.
I'm sorry I can't help you though.
Hi everyone. I have my phone for 5 months. When I play Clash of Clans (CoC), there is a static sound or I can say buzzing as in the following similar post from 2015 https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/help/one-speakers-buzzing-t3269228 .
I controlled other games and some apps to see if there is a similar sound but no, it's only CoC. My phone is always in Mute mode, all game sounds are disabled, Media sound is also zero but still have the sound. And when I'm alone at home, it's really annoying.
I searched about this and found many threads in almost every forum, but couldn't find anything useful. Most of the posts answered as above, saying "clean the speakers". But this sound was there when I bought my brand new Galaxy. My aim is to get thoughts about what it might be, and is there a way to get rid of it. I have some thoughts about that sound.
It sounds like a High (might be Low) Frequency signal that is coming only when the app is foreground. I started to think that CoC developers added this to the game on some purpose. It might be compare the online players whereabouts and if two devices are seeing each other (I mean hearing), the app might won't match them in the versus battles. But it is unlikely since the original multiplayer battles need an offline player base for an online player to start the attack.
I appreciate if someone here can confirm that CoC also make the sound on devices other that Note 8 or even on other OS's. This at least shows that I might be true about it is made on purpose, and that there is no way to silent this, except deleting the game.
Sorry for the long post.
Nope, no undesired sounds or noises, I have a 950F running nougat
namely, I use tidal, as a streaming service. But I often have it that songs are just too quiet for me. Now I have the file, mixer_gains.xml found, where yes the values are, to make the volume generally louder. can someone tell me what value I need to change exactly, so I get streaming apps like tidal or Spotify a higher volume?
then I have a question, I have read that the streaming services have the volume generally down to have a supposedly better listening experience. but sometimes the so-called clipping occurs with me. So when I listen to music over the streaming service, the music comes over with certain fluctuations. It sounds like you are constantly turning loud and quiet in a song, one behind the other. (is difficult to describe) could one work against it somehow? I have the feeling that since the system volume and the desired volume of the streaming service interfere with each other? The problem occurs very often, but it does not always stop. I'm still a bit helpless.
Is the issue present when you listen to music that is stored natively on your device?
