Forcing Update in progress to fail? - Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
Picked up a Fire Tab on black friday - havent touched it until now ( came with 5.3.1 ) . I noticed that while letting it sit charging ( it was on) , it automatically connected to a neighbors open wifi and restarted on its own to update. upon seeing the "updating" bar graph i force shut the tablet off. Is there a way to prevent it from updating to 5.3.2? Tried recovery mode but doesnt seem to respond to down volume + power, just proceeds to install update. Any way to force the update to fail? ( I have not allowed the tablet to complete the update , i keep crashing it once it hits ~25% complete)
Any advice would be much appreciated !

Typically no. Not even a factory reset will clear the downloaded OTA update (stored elsewhere). But certainly worth a try! From full off press <power>+<vol-up>. These are the keys most distant from each other. Device should boot into recovery mode. From there try a factory reset. You could also try reloading/sideloading FireOS 5.3.1 recognizing the outcome could be a bricked device given an update to 5.3.2.1 is already in progress. Good luck.

Xperia Z 6603 - Auto Repair Triangle Boot Loop after .244 Update

Hi All,
I have an Xperia Z C6603 UK Unbranded phone and have just updated to the 244 update (direct from 434) using the PC Companion software. Phone is not rooted.
Did the update - all seemed OK, running android 4.2.2 no problems. Then had notification to update Sony apps (Walkman, Album, etc) so I started the process of updating the apps as usual. Then the problems started:
apps were frozen at "installing". System worked fine. Left it for 10 minutes, no progress.
Decided to restart the phone
Phone did not reboot as normal but went into "auto repair" mode with the settings triangle and a status bar at the bottom (+ red LED when plugged in)
The status bar never progressed, it just stayed continuously "moving" as if initialising
Was only able to REBOOT phone off by holding Vol+ and the POWER button. I could never turn it off, it would only reboot to the same state.
PC companion software did not recognise the phone was connected to PC regardless of the various options I tried.
Downloaded the Sony Update Service application and installed on PC
Finally managed to get the phone connected to the PC by doing the following:
-hold down Vol+ and Power till phone goes off
-keep holding Vol+ and Power until phone vibrates once
-keep holding Vol+ and Power until phone vibrates 3 times
-let go and then immediately plug in USB cable (while SUS is running on PC) and simultaneously hold the Vol- button down.
-SUS recognised the phone. Unfortunately the only option I had was to factory reset and lose all data.
Anyway I how have my phone back but it was factory reset. Never mind all my stuff is online anyway so that's not a biggie.
Thought I'd put this out there in case anyone else runs into this problem.
For what its worth I think the 244 update is a huge improvement on the 434 firmware. Better screen visibility and colours and seems a little faster (but that could be the reset). Dont know about the battery life but glad its back.
Cheers.
If you happen to see the repair triangle thing again leave it to do its thing.
It can take a while for it to complete as it's optimising/repairing system files. Just be patient

Thanks for the tip . I did wonder if I should leave it but it was unchanged for over two hours so I thought it was properly stuck.
Battery life seems to be pretty good as well so far.
There has beena few incidents where it took people over 24 hours for it to complete.
Just leave it be, and you can keep all your data

Pure 5.1: Boots, has moto display, but black screen when I unlock

So currently I can boot my phone and it displays the boot screen fine. Once its done loading though I just have black screen. Moto display still works and shows new notifications but if I try to unlock the phone its still just the black screen. I can hold down the power button and the power menu shows up fine. I tried clearing the cache but that didn't help. Before I do a factory reset I thought I might see if any one here had some ideas on solutions.
I have the latest 5.1 OTA update. My phone us unlocked, but not rooted. I tried to hook it up to my computer to see if I could at least grab my files off of it, but while it shows up on my computer I can't access any actual files or directories.
I've tried searching around, but I can't find anyone else with a similar issue. Last night my phone battery ran down to zero (and rather quickly compared to normal usage). I may have ****ed it up by trying to get it to boot and be usable while charging but with the battery only at 1% (I guess with the standard charger an in-use Moto X uses power faster than it can take it from the charger). I tried letting it charge for a few minutes and then letting it boot, but after a couple of minutes of use it would shut down again. I finally gave up and let it charge. I didn't really pay attention to its status, but in the middle of the night when I woke up I booted it before falling back to sleep. Not sure there's a connection to my issue and this or not.
Any ideas on what the cause might be or what I can try to do to remedy the issue without data loss?
Edit: I ended up just doing a factory reset and that worked. Admin can feel free to delete this thread if they want.
This sounds similar to the issue here:

This is a bug that needs to be reported to Motorola.
I am that guy from the second post, and I wasn't able to recover the phone. Connecting to PC did not do anything. I would like to ask: is it booting with the new boot animation? Or old one? Because mine showed old animation long after the update was sent out, so I'm thinking the update may have tried to apply and failed, thus breaking the phone. Should all efforts fail, your only bet is to boot into recovery (power + volume up when off, volume down, volume up in the option menu (to select recovery), then hold power when Android robot appears, and while holding it down, press the vol up button once to make the list of recovery options appear. Scroll down to wipe data/factory reset, press power to select, then find Yes to confirm. Good luck!
so this just happened
i came back from a trip and took a whoooole lot of photos. when i came back my battery went to zero and device switched off. i charged the phone to 10-20% and switched it on and all i see is blank screen only moto display is working and power off option is showing itself when i hold the power button which is the same problem as yours
havent done any factory reset yet. is there any way to retreive the photos since i dont want to lose them. there are around 600 and all of them are of the trip.
im on 5.1
there are other people too who faced the same problem and all of them are on 5.1 but there is no solution

Mine did this yesterday, although I'm not entirely certain that the battery hit zero percent. The best I could tell from looking through the logs in recovery was that something was trying to update and failed. I suspect that it was a push from Motorola that hosed it. The only way to fix it is to do a factory reset. Once I did that and restored all my apps the battery was draining at a rate of 40% per hour or so. I found that the package access helper was the culprit and rebooted the phone. Post reboot, I immediately noticed that the boot animation and Moto logo had changed from what they had been on 5.0/5.1 (prior to yesterday). I also noticed that some of the widgets I hadn't reconfigured after the reset were now back. Weird indeed.
Anyway, I have to agree with the others that this is a very bad bug, that needs to be fixed. I am cautiously optimistic that the factory reset has cured it but we'll see. Based on my experience with this phone so far and the sale of Moto to Lenovo, this will be my last Moto phone.
I am having the exact same issue. Has anybody had a luck resolving it short of a factory reset?
My phone battery died last night. I plugged my phone in, let it get about 15% charge, then tried to turn it back on. The phone boots like normal, but after the boot animation goes away, the screen is black. Active notifications still seem to work, and I can hold the power button to get the Power Down option. I can boot into the bootloader & access recovery just fine. However, my phone is fully stock (no root, no bootloader unlock, no anything). I can't seem to access ADB when the phone is powered normally (ie, when I'm at this mysterious black screen), but it's possible that USB debugging isn't even enabled.
So far, I've found a bunch people who've said a full factory reset will fix the problem, but I'm looking for another solution, or at least a way to grab my data before I reset. Since my bootloader's still locked, I can't seem to use fastboot boot to boot into TWRP, and I can't find any other way to access my data to copy it off the phone. I've tried wiping the cache using the stock recovery to no avail. Any suggestions?

OS Boots to black screen? Anyway to recover data?

Hi all, forgive me if this has already been asked in some form.
My girlfriends Verizon Moto X lost battery one day while she was playing a game. After she charged and tried booting again, it just booted to a black screen. It still runs through the full boot animation. Weirdly enough, active display will still show her information (and can be interacted with until unlocked), and holding power will bring up a power menu for shutdown. The camera gesture also works to launch it, but you can't interact with anything at all. Safe mode provides the exact same issues.
She is running the latest 5.1 update and is fully stock. She also does not wish to root or flash a custom recovery.
I have tried to pull the data, which windows recognizes as a media device, but shows empty when clicked on. OSx immediately says that the storage can not be accessed over android file transfer. I plugged it in for ADB but ADB won't seem to find it when its turned on. It is recognized in fastboot though. I also wiped the cache via the stock recovery, but that didn't help.
I believe a factory reset will be the solution to the black screen, but she has a bunch of photos she would really like to save. Is there anyway for me to actually get them off of the phone? If she can get those, I can get it factory reset for her no problem.
Thanks for any advice!
The exact same thing has happened to my girlfriend's phone as well and I'm also looking for a solution to recover the data. Moto X (2014) Pure, 5.1
The device boots. The Motorola boot animation plays all the way through, the screen brightness dims slightly as normal, and then the Amber Alert from the previous night vibrates the phone several times and displays over a fully black background. There are no soft buttons and no status bar. The home screen appears not to have loaded (yet?)
Attempts to click "OK" to close the alert fail.
The phone is hot. It is working hard. Something stuck in a loop?
The power button will bring up the "Power Off" prompt with no issues. The animation plays smoothly and the phone can be powered off as normal. The phone is able to recognize touch input here.
Calling the phone while it's on will play a ringtone. It is receiving calls.
Plugging the phone into a computer will show up as an MTP device. However, there are no contents listed.
Sometimes, the phone will prompt that the "System" process is not responding and will ask to close it. This has no effect.
Booting into Safe Mode has no effect.
Clearing the application cache from recovery mode has no effect.
I have a CSE degree but absolutely no Android experience. Forensics on a NAND dump or something like that isn't out of the question, unless it's not possible. Hope you're able to get some help.

Update?
Hello,
I am having this issue as well.
Unfortunately I am unable to perform any form of factory reset, the bootloader also just brings me to the black screen and I am unable to use soft keys. The kicker for me is that I cannot connect to my PC with a working USB. I used to have that available and now no device is recognized.

Phone forced system update, is there a way to cancel it from flashing?

My phone seems to be downloading and installing the latest system update by itself. I did not trigger this and I DO NOT want to update. I want to be able to charge my phone to 100% while I wait for my replacement model. I'm currently in a situation where the update is trying to install and I'm holding the VOL UP + VOL DOWN + HOME + POWER buttons to get into the Download Mode prompt. When I try to reboot my phone the update keeps trying to install. Does anyone know if its possible to cancel the update process once its already begun? As a side note, does anyone know the hardware button guide to get in and out of recovery/download mode? (Currently I'm randomly holding buttons.) If I can't get a quick response I might be forced to accept this update, so frustrated

That update DOES NOT, I repeat, DOES NOT limit the charging of the battery to only 60% on the original Note 7 V1. The update that does that is only for Korea. In the USA, the update just tells you that the Note 7 V1 needs to be exchanged every time you plug it in.

I have the update on my V1 phone and my battery still charges up to 100% and my battery life is the same as before the update. Also, all the lag is gone and the fingerprint and iris scanners are now blazing fast and I'm getting awesome FPS in my games
I ended up doing the update. I confirmed that I can charge to 100% thanks for the replies!
Doesn't updating prevent you from rooting? Why are people updating? (serious question)

Because the percentage of people who root is small these days.

Samsung forced the update through. The update shows in the notification area and I accidentally tapped it, which started the update without a confirmation prompt. Very annoying, things like this are why I prefer AOSP roms over touchwiz/grace/samsung crap.

P30 Pro suddenly shuts down in middle of call, now boot loops.

Hi everyone!
I was on call yesterday working from home (due to Covid-19 effects) when my P30 pro shut down and started doing boot loops. I tried the following remedies so far but to no avail:
1. Drain the battery and try recharging and open - it never goes to recharging screen the moment I plug it, it just goes straight to boot loop.
2. Press volume button up+power - never goes to EMUI screen.
3. Connect to PC via USB and press button down+up - It opens to fastboot&recovery screen but my HiSuite opens saying device is not supported for erecovery and not found.
4. Tried downloading all external apps i can find - Hardly find anything for Huawei and the rest that I do, requires USB debugging mode which I actually can't get into.
I'm currently trying ADB and stuff but it seems it doesn't even find my device. I also don't recall updating any systems (auto or manual) nor installed any new applications yesterday.
I hope someone out there can help me... If not, at least provide suggestions to get my files back... I have recent important files there that I haven't loaded into Cloud yet and it really pains me to realize I'm losing them...
Thanks in advance!
Regards,
Mark Sy
