So I currently have a $35 3GB/month plan for the Xoom and unlimited data on the D3. The mobile hotspot app is $20 a month. Of course if we had root I could just tether and not worry about it, but I have a question.
I can't really find anywhere concrete, but is that hotspot capped at 2 GB? I feel like I've read this somewhere but can't confirm. It just makes sense to me to pay $20 (if not $0) instead of $35/month. I bought it contract free, I just like the idea of having internet on it without having to get the phone out.
It also seems like tethering is slower than if the tablet had its own connection. No LTE in my area, so the LTE upgrade still wouldn't help me (if it would hurry up and come out already, I've heard whispers, but no emails).
Thoughts?
Stock rooted de-bloated... Can someone point me in the direction of what my tethering options are for Bionic?

Note with my Bionic I tried a few different wifi tethering apps and even though it was rooted it would still try to communicate with Verizion to check permissions. This could be because I tried it with an stock (aside from root) bloated phone at the time.
Now I use Wifi Tether (sparingly because I only have 4gigs of data usage) on my phone with Eclipse 2.2 and its running fine.
I can use FoxFi and google code wifi tether apps. The stock usb tether worked when I first bought my phone but after an update (875 I think) my computer can no longer get an ip address to make an internet connection. I haven't been able to find a usb tether app that works without having to install something on your computer too (like pdanet). Wifi tether drains your battery FAST. Wish I could get the stock usb tether working again.

What he said! Bionic is a fairly unique phone in that it can DO wifi tether without any sort of app (I think it's line 147...something...something...)
OK, here it is:
Settings Storage (the one with the picture of the hammer and wrench)
settings.db
settings
line 147 (entitlement check) edit the value from "1" to "0", reboot, and it will no longer tattle to Verizon when you turn on your wifi hotspot
That's probably the ONLY thing of note I'll ever do to the phone, aside from freezing 800 unwanted apps
Some people have had issues getting that to work after some of the last few updates. Also reports of phone unexpectedly rebooting while running wireless tether. I do think it is worth a try though.

From what I've heard though, FoxFi is the easiest way to do it
I use Fox-fi and it works great. Much more stable than wifi tether.

Have never had any sort of grief up to this point, spanning 2 bionics since Sept11...one never knows though
I can't beleive that FOXFI is so much easy and workiing great, highly recommended.
Thanks for pointing out, it's now on my Bionic, X, D2 and D3
Home Internet went out for a bit the other day but we didn't miss a beat thanks to my bionic and Foxfi. Worked flawlessly.

Wtih VZW wanting to eliminate unlimited data plans, I wonder if they will start looking into those tethering without their plan to do so. Anyone thinking about going legit on their tethering?

The only way you'll loose your unlimited, is by upgrading. As long as you never change your contract you'll still keep it. So if you're willing to dump a bunch of $$$ for a new phone every year, you're good to go.

There was a release on msnbc.com about how Verizion is going to be changing how data works on plans so it nullifys grandfathered unlimited data plans. The data is no longer per phone, it will be a tiered plan for the entire account and data usage is no longer per device but per account instead.
We get f*cked, not that I have unlimited data anyway however..

I've read multiple articles about this, and the ones with the most details explain this summer, when upgrading to a new device, is when they switch your plan bringing you into a new contract. Nothing says anywhere you'll loose it if you refuse to upgrade. You can buy new phones out right and activate them yourself, especially easily with 4G now without changing contracts. My parents are still running their origins Alltel contracts from when verizon bought them out 3 years ago because of not upgrading.

I see so its only when upgrading and yet you have the opportunity to buy the phone outright and maintain the data plan. But who wants to pay full price for a new phone?
Actually, I think paying full price for devices and doing away with subsidies is a very healthy change, but I have been doing that for the most part for years anyway.

Don't get me wrong I would love not to be tied down to my provider however paying upwards of 600-800 for a new phone every year or two is a little spendy when thats roughly 2 weeks of pay for me.
Hey there,
I have been on ATT for ever and now that they are throttling my data above 5GB. I am thinking about moving to Sprint or T-mobile.
Can you share your experiences?
What is the advantage of getting the new Note 4 for T-mobile?
Is the boot loader locked? How about rooting?
How about streaming YouTube videos?
Thanks!
Don't go to sprint.
Go to tmobile.
We have an unlocked bootloader.
This is how you root.

We have the most roms.
Just look in the Android Development sections for the sprint and tmobile note 4s.
I love my tmobile note 4.

I love tmobile. Check your area for coverage. If it looks good that's what I'd go with, hands down.

Yes definitely check your area for coverage first. With Tmo I'm getting about 20 Mbps download at home and about 60-70 Mbps at work. But then if I go to certain part of town I'm on E with no services.
I was beating myself up by holding onto my unlimited data plan with AT&T. Been with them since they were Cingular. If you want truly unlimited data at a reasonably speed then Tmo is the way to go. Just take a look around the development section and you'll get your answer. Good luck.
As att customer that used 25gb alone on my family account I would never leave att. Tmo spotty as hell everywhere I've lived.

I save almost $1000 a year with t-mobile compared to ATT. That was enough to make me switch lol, spotty service but I honestly dont care since I save so much. With Att I brought my own devices and had 30gbs w/ 2 lines, with tmobile 2 lines with unl everything is $100 per month . Never going to look back. Also I leave the country once or twice a year and being able to text and still use social media for free is a plus.
I hope this doesn't sound like a sob story but I live in rural TN. The best I can get to my house is dial-up internet. Therefore I have AT&T as my wireless subscriber because I use my cell phone as a hotspot and I actually get 4g LTE at my house. I just saw AT&T's unlimited plan deal and I also saw that tethering/hotspot is not allowed on this plan. My question is if I choose the unlimited data plan from AT&T, can I somehow work around their hotspot block or is there something I can do to my phone to work around this? Is this even possible?
Thank you in advance for your help.

Or install a rom with tethering check disabled.
Whatever the tether unlock method for marshmallow is will work and also custom roms that disable the tether check but keep in mind that since it goes against your plan and this new unlimited plan doesn't carry the whole idea of "I've been on this plan since I got it and that means I'm a super loyal customer and entitled to everything." Then I wouldn't be surprised if At&t would be more likely to kick these new unlimited plan users to mobile share for tethering than old unlimited plans but I also wouldn't be surprised if rural customers would be more likely to get a break on that due to less congested network. It's worth a shot, really the worst thing that could happen is getting put back on your old plan if At&t chooses to force that. and being stuck with a directv subscription assuming you switched from dish or something.
I don't get cable out this way so I'm on DirecTV anyway. The only thing I'm worried about is losing the good plan I have now if the unlimited one doesn't work out. I get 40GB for $75, it would be a shame to lose that.

did you have any luck with keeping tethering? i've been hesitant to make the change because i dont want to lose my hotspot.
I'm on the fence about making the transition also, I don't want to lose my plan or hotspot. I waiting to see if someone has success.

I tether on AT&Ts cricket service regularly to kids iPads and nexus tablets. No issues at all.
You will get throttled after 22GB
I'm on an old grandfathered AT&T unlimited data plan and I can tether using my current jailbroken iPhone but it's starting to die and I'm looking at the Note 8 as a replacement. I see a lot of info about the Verizon plans, but can anyone confirm that if I buy an unlocked Note 8 from Samsung that I'll still be able to tether on AT&T? I gather that pdanet/foxfi no longer works so I also wonder if there's a way to hide the tether usage, and/or if AT&T even still cares about this.
Thanks!

Not trying to get off Subject but I was facing the same thing when I was about to buy my S8+. I had the grandfathered plan (in some form) since my old Palm Treo 650 and hated the thought of losing it. Then ATT came out with a new unlimited plan that has a 10gb/month hotspot for each phone, free texting & calling in US, Canada, Mexico. So I asked my family if they wanted to all be on the same plan so we share the $100. Access fee and the rest is cheaper too. The whole plan is cheaper for me than it was with the "limited" grandfathered in plan (every year ATT had been raising the price of the grandfathered unltd but what could we do? Nothing!). Plus I have DirecTV & get a $25. monthly credit and $17.99 monthly credit for HBO. I think streaming DirecTV on their app is totally not going against data usage (which can slow after 22GB). This is what finally made me give up the old plan.
I could not find any reliable way to otherwise tether. I never did root though. Now I have the N8 and I use the hotspot all of the time but not enough to reach 10gb/month. I do not work for ATT! Lol.

If you root it follow this thread. It will work. I bought a Verizon note 8 then switch to att sim. You will experience a little bug with phone calling. It will not place the country code leaving you with a number instead of contact name and volte and wifi calling will not work. You have to switch carriers on the phone using this method to fix everything:

After that root it and follow these steps to enable wifi tether:

Thanks, I'm new here so bear with me.
I thought that since Verizon and AT&T use different networks, the phones were not interchangeable.
Is there a benefit to buying an unlocked Verizon phone as opposed to an unlocked AT&T phone?
Is rooting necessary? A number of people on here claim that using a factory unlocked phone allows them to tether W/O any modifications. Just trying to verify before I shell out $1k.

you can tether with anyones plan; if you are crazy and use 100's of gigs, then you should pay your way instead of stealing bandwidth from those of us that pay for what we use
