WhatsApp consumes too much battery ? - OnePlus 3T Questions & Answers

Hi everybody,
I recently purchased the OP3T and it's really great, but one issue I can't solve..
Somehow WhatsApp is leading at the top of the battery list with great gap from the second and third and I don't know why.
The app has permissions only to camera, contacts, microphone and storage.
Does anybody here experienced this issue before?
I've attached some prints.
Thanks!

Hi, I have an OP3 and I also facing the issue. It seems there is some problem/incompatibility between the last releases of Whatsapp apk with the last OxygenOS 4.0.2.
I didn't have this behavior once month ago...

Are you using it for voice or video calls? If so, its normal. On video call, on my phone it drains about 10% per hour or something like that

i use whatsapp a lot throughout the day but don't see this type of drain. I'm on the latest OOS stock unrooted. If you use voice/video during the day from whatsapp that might explain why it's at the top of the list as was mentioned in the post above mine.

If u rooted use greenify , it will do some better.

Hi
For the last 4-5 weeks im also facing the same issue when Whatsapp is eating my battery on OP3T.
Android V7.1.1
OxyenOS 4.1.6
Whatsapp 2.17.223
I already re-installed the app, any other ideas?

Also why Whatsapp is using sensors quite much? I'm using it just for messages.

Will I get notifications on time or delayed? That why I don't greenify whatsapp.

What you are experiencing is not a problem with Whatsapp.
It is the worst bug in Android where the modem doesn't shut off when it should. It will incorrectly be reported as an issue with an app but you'll see, remove whatsapp and another app will likely trigger the bug and pop to the top of the list.
Google the mobile radio active bug.
I've worked around it by using Leandroid with Magisk root.

yeah im 2 facing that issue therefore i flashed ob9

I have the same problem.

I evidence the same problem

Do you have aggressive doze activated?
In my case I do and never had problems with battery because of WhatsApp.

Top left corner screen

So I have had three ROMs now - resurrection, cm 12.1, and computerfreek - and all thee have the issue where the top left part of screen becomes disabled to touch. A restart fixes for a few. I got a message to disable chat heads in FB messenger but it didn't help. Any ideas?
I also have this issue. I'm inclined to think it's a hardware problem, since although it didn't start happening until after I unlocked the bootloader, it's persisted through many different ROM installations.
I too am having this problem restarting the phone fixes it for a wile running CF rom as well any ideas on what it might be would be much appreciated

We can't be the only ones with the issue
Same problem
I'm having the same issue with CM 12.1 on my T-Mobile Note 3 (Sm-N900T) and rebooting also temporarily fixes it.
I'm trying to narrow it down, does anyone else use PocketCast?

Facebook Messenger
Same problem here... I saw somewhere that Facebook Messenger is the culprit. I uninstalled it, and no problems since... But I really need the app for work and personal use. Seems crazy that an app can cause this problem!
It's the Facebook messenger app that causes this. It happens to other phones as well.

Whatsapp does not work correctly

Phone: Sony Xperia Z5 (Android 6.0.1, rooted but nothing modded in whatsapp)
Watch: Asus Zenwatch 3 (Android Wear 1.5.0.3798981)
I can send Whatsapp Messages via Google Now without problems. But when I try to answer to a Whatsapp Notification, the watch is showing the green tick circle but the message has not been send.
I tried reinstalling Whatsapp and i've already checked the permissions on the phone, but it hasn't changed anything.
Does anyone know why it does not work?
Check your battery saver settings on your phone. Maybe this happens because your phone limits the network usage when it's locked.

I had the exact same issue. I recently upgraded to what was, at the time, the latest WhatsApp beta version (2.1.117) and since then, responses from the watch have gone through properly. There was an Android Wear app update on the phone around the same time, but I think the restored functionality corresponded to when I installed the WhatsApp beta.

But it happens even if Whatsapp is opend on the phone
Same problem here since the last update
Exact same issue here. It started when I updated my phone to Android Nougat. My guess that it is caused by the new way Nougat handles replies. I could be wrong and it could have been caused my some Whatsapp update. Telegram works fine though.
I was having the same issue with replies not working but new messages were fine.
This was only also happening in Whatsapp, everything else was fine.
Whatsapp support just sent me the standard useless reply showing they didn't even ready my email.
Just updated to the Whatsapp Beta version and now replies work from watch

Text messages bug Nougat

So I have a US 3t and have been experiencing a constant bug that happens whenever I update to Nougat. I use Textra as my primary messaging app so when the phone's setup after a clean flash I switch my main messaging app to Textra. Switching to that app causes messages to get sent but not received. I try switching back to the main app and same result. I wanted to know if anyone else experiences this bug or has a workaround to solve this. I downgraded back to Marshmallow to see if it happens there but nothing. Everything works fine on MM. Any help regarding this issue will be highly appreciated.

i use textra with nougat 7.1.1, both 4.1.3 and OB5. no issues here. A3003, europe version.
regards.
off topic but related to textra. I used to love textra but found out it was draining my battery. check out the link in my signature for the battery thread for more about it. if textra isn't doing that anymore, I'd be pumped, but I'm not corssing my fingers for it.
I was having this same issue with a co-worker and his g5, he is now experiencing it with other people. So it may not be on your end the issue.

Late notification?

Hello,
I have been noticing that some apps don't receive push notifications after the phone has been sitting overnight, such as Outlook and home security apps. In have turned off app optimizing for them to prevent the phone putting them to sleep, but the issue still occurs. Any idea what else I can do?
Thanks

I posted something similar. The fix works no problem on S7 / S8, but on Note8, at least at launch, the workaround didn't seem to work. Not sure if this has been resolved.

I use Outlook and have no problem with notifications. But I have disabled the app from Battery Monitor too, so it never suspends and works just fine even if the phone was sleeping for a while.

Which FW is installed on your phone? Which variant of the Note8?

I use the duos variant, SM-N950F with Exynos.
This is the build: NMF26X.N950FXXU1AQI1
Basically the stock firmware that came with it, didn't even received an update yet.

OK. My issues were on the Qualcomm variant, original FW (don't remember the version) where disabling battery optimization on the apps wasn't actually working (vs. my S7 / S8 where it works no problem).

I only had problems with Facebook Messenger getting disconnected even if I was using the Note 8, but works fine with older versions. I have no problem with any other app notification. Maybe try doing a factory reset if you can't get any notification while sleeping even with both Battery Monitor and Battery Optimizations are disabled for the app.
I've been having this problem with GMail ever since I got this phone. I've tried all of the workarounds, including excluding it from doze and it doesn't work. I've given up getting notifications for GMail. I stopped using the verizon messenger app because the notifications were so unreliable.

It sounds like that unlike on all previous Samsung models, the exclude from Doze feature is not working on the Note8.

Yea. Either not working at all, or at least not working well. Hopefully this is something that gets fixed somewhere along the way. I haven't had an update since October 4th. They don't seem to be anxious to fix things.

I went back to my S8+ because of this. Not having my email deliver in a timely manner is a critical thing for me.

Understandable. Fortunately for me, it's more of an annoyance than something critical. Were you having the problem with GMail, or was it some other type of email? I've been thinking of giving the stock email client a try with GMail, to see if it's any better.

Nine Email - one of the best Exchange clients out for Android. No issues on S7 or S8 when excluding in Doze, only the Note8 has issues. I know its Doze related as Facebook Messenger has the same issues.

That's a problem of the Gmail app from ages... I never got it to work reliable in any device from lollipop. That's why I use Outlook, no problems here.

This is the first phone I have had where Gmail isn't reliable. I had a Note 4 and prior to that, an S3. I never had problems with it on either one. I didn't know that there was an outlook for android. I might have to check it out, especially seeing as I could use it for work email.

whatsapp notification push issue

Hello fellow note 9 owners....
I'm facing an issue when I close whatsapp and lock the screen I don't get notifications that I have new messages nor do they get delivered to me unless I open WhatsApp. I think I tried everything to fix it.... Here's what I tried
I put WhatsApp in the unmonitored app list in the battery settings, I'm in performance mode, I cleared cache, I uninstalled WhatsApp, reinstalled it fresh not from a restore. Is there anything else I should do to fix this?
Mine is okay so far (exynos) however, when I am connected to whatsapp web (on my computer, on the same wifi network with my note 9) , it'll lose connection to the phone at random intervals. I'd have to unlock the phone, launch whatsapp for whatsapp web to be connected once again.

I tried still the same problem
Got the same problem with both Whatsapp and Viber, and often with fb messenger.
It seems that I cannot fix it since I tried literally everything and yet, on my friend's note 9, everything is working flawless.

Have you put the app to sleep?
Same issue but for nearly all apps which require the internet for a notification. Only get the issue on mobile data, when connected to wi-fi all are instant.

Make sure you turn this off.
I also have the same problem i have tried a lot of solution but none works.
Changed Rom several times, using PNF-root to change heartbeat interval, uninstalled Universal GMS Doze, setting whatsapp as not optimized, deleted whatsapp and data.
Nothing just nothing have helped, im currently on syberia Rom xiaomi Mi5.
But i dont think its Rom related because i had the same problem on Xiaomi.eu ROM and other Roms
Thks for this tip as I was struggling to find the culprit despite knowing this was rhe issue I had it on by mistake.
This settings now are more buried on pie so forgotten this one.
EDIT: STILL HAVING THE ISSUE

Actually I thought it was solved by turning off the battery optimization (which it was on by mistake) and thought it was solved but tonight had again the same issue.
In the morning received only the notifications/messages after opening whatsapp.
I'm not sure if this options below might not also be part of the issue (despite not making sense but who knows...)
This might be a problem for people running Android Pie and One Ui on their Note 9s. I don't believe these problems existed on Oreo. Lets wait a see when an update will be pushed to fix this problem. Until then my wife's Note 9 is staying on Oreo.
For those of you that have updated to Pie how has it affected battery life? Better or worse? If better by how much? SOT Etc

When I got the note 9 the update for Pie was 3 days after so didn't have the chance to have it properly tested, but I think I had the issue on both versions.
This issue exists since Samsung introduced their device maintenance. Switching off batterie optimisation for WhatsApp was the solution for me. Actually only WhatsApp, threema and k9-mail have problems receiving push in standby on my phones, any other apps I use don't have this issue. Therfore I think it's more an issue with the apps, less with the rom. Also Samsung states in the settings that apps in standby may not receive actualisations or send notifications.
Go to stettings->apps->WhatsApp and turn off batterie optimisation
Before Samsung introduced this feature, I was using greenify and had the same issue with some apps.
Like I mentioned earlier. I had issues with Telegram and WhatsApp notifications on Oreo. Now on pie beta 3 no issues. Also my WhatsApp and telegram *are* battery optimized. So I'd say you should be looking at other avenues to remedy this problem. Maybe review the app notifications for whatsapps carefully.

The app notifications are flawless.
The issue is not the notifications, otherwise they would be there but just not being notified on the system.
Even when opening the phone and unlocking it, they are not on the phone, BUT when the app is opened you start actually receiving the messages in a fast manner flow almost like they are just being texted at a very fast pace, so it seems more like they have just been pushed rather than having the message there and simply not notified, otherwise would be having a static last message.
The app seems to be in sleep mode even when whitelisted.
At the moment I have absolutely everything off inside the optimization
The background mobile data is ON
IS even allowed while data saver is ON (Which I don't use anyway)
The sleeping apps, for whatsapp is whitelisted (OFF)
AND it still have the same issue, either the app is optimized or not optimized which does not make sense.

Thanks for the suggestion.
I have 1 note 9 with Gbwhatsapp and another note 9 with stock Whatsapp. Have issues on both.
One was updated to pie and then did factory reset and restored from cloud (unless the backed up settings somehow contributed to an error and other was just OTA updated without any reset. They even operate on different networks.
Seems pretty odd...
To me the app is showing exactly the same behavior as behaving like the list of "sleeping apps", despite the fact it's whitelisted.
