What do you mean? It's perfectly normal that you loose SMS-messages when upgrading the ROM. Updating the ROM is like erasing the harddisk of a computer and re-installing the OS: you'll loose anything that's on the disk.
If you mean that you lost the ability to send SMS-messages: within the settings of the "phone"application (enter the phone application and select menu/options/Services), there's a way to enter the telephone-number of the SMS-central for your provider. When entered, you'll be able to send messages again.

Marc - I meant the SMS option is no longer there. I am using Cingular. I guess that I need to "configure" for SMS specificially? If so, what exactly do I need to do? Thanks.
That's what happens when you don't use a cingular rom :wink:

I figured it out for gmail, but those big ugly letters are still next to my Contact names.

Select their name, click the pencil to edit then add an image for that contact.
That is the only way I know of...
