Cant browse for ringtones or notifications - Galaxy Note5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an unrooted Note 5 and it JUST updated, fixing some unrelated issues I was having , but it changed all my notifications back by forgetting where that media was. I have searched via ES explorer and my ringtones are gone. Ok, thats fine. Just download new ones. I did so, but when I go into sounds and notifications, and try to change the sounds, it brings up the browsing window but its stuck on USB. Ive tried navigating away from USB, Ive even inserted the same usb drive that was in there last, and it will not let me back out of it. My first instinct is to clear the cache, but I tried clear the settings cache and if thats the right answer, settings cache wasnt the issue. Any help is appreciated.

how you attempt to open notification sounds? is it 3rd party app or from Notification Setting of device?
also if you think it happened after u connect a usb otg to phone reconnect it and then go to storage setting and select unmount usb and check if you get error or successful message
:good:

I've restarted several times.
I go through settings>sounds and notifications
I did just bow try to mount and unmount and still the same thing. It tells me it's not there. When it is plugged in, it will not navigate away from looking in the USB drive.

Have you done factory reset?

Since system ringtones and notification sounds are in system/media folders of root directory..How could you manage to see if your ringtones and notification sounds are present or lost without having root access..( you have mentioned that you have unrooted phone)..the second thing have you tried to clear cache and data of media storage app? As after clearing data it will rescan your media after rebooting and if they present, they will be restored

Now all of my notifications are unknown. I never said anything about system notifications, just the ones I set it for.

Usually something I try to avoid. If that's the route I have to take I will definitely root.

I think clearing data and cache of media storage app will probably help you..Because as per my information when you clear data and cache of media storage app and reboot the device, device itself rescans all of existing media on your phone..Ask some senior members about this option, if they give a positive sign then hope your problem will be solved..Thank you

Unfortunately it didnt force a re scan. Even DLing a re scan app didnt do it. All it did was forget where my ringtones went.

Turns out the missing component was to clear the media storage, reboot, THEN insert the usb it was looking for. BAM! Now I have a choice! Thanks all!

Incredible Rooter Windows App

I wrote this basic little application to help out those who are either afraid of the command prompt or simply just don't want to deal with it. Drop it in the same folder as adb and run it.
Feel free to leave feedback or contact me with any questions/comments.

If people decide they like this, I will continue development and add some new features to it.
Check out the Readme.txt for more information and detailed explanations.
Thank you, I had rooted mine before using the command prompt, your application save me time on taking off the battery and waiting for reboot. Thanks again.

Thanks for your work, it doesn't go unappreciated =).
Glad to see people are finding it useful. Expect a CityID removal button in the near future.
where exactly do we drop this? what's the path?
As the OP stated, place this program in the same folder as adb, so depending on where your sdk is located it might go in C:\sdk\tools\
what's the adb?

well I'm stuck. tried several cards tried all the methods and still no go. It goes to the screen with the red triangle and dead ends. and after that it just says cant open cache recovery command guess im screwed oh well thanx for posting all the steps you guys went through effen pisses me off though
Has anyone used this and has it worked. I've tried every method on every site and nothing, I'm going to try this when I get home from work.
Hey guys, sorry if there's been any confusion.
This app will not make ADB start up in recovery. That's still something that we still have to achieve to get any of this to work.
Peronally I used the Kingston 4GB Class 4 card and it works pretty much almost every single time I just do a simple adb reboot.
This application was designed to make the rooting process a quick and painless command prompt-less process after you achieve adb running in recovery mode. I used this on my friend's Incredible and the rooting process took me literally 30 seconds to complete.

Does the red triangle with the exclaimation point mean it has failed, or do you wait further?
Thanks,

I used a SanDisk 2GB works everytime.
After your in recovery mode and have clicked the Step 3: button "Check for ADB In Recovery".
If you get the "sorry adb not running" message try this:
Unplug your usb cord from the device and remove your battery.
Replace your battery and hold down the volume- key and press the power button.
Highlight Recovery as soon as possible.
Plug the usb cord back in and press the power button at the same time.
Note: If you hear a noise when you plugged in the usb cord before you see the black Recovery screen you did it wrong.
Click the Step 3: button one to five times.
If it doesn't work try it again or try a different SD card.
Touch thanks for all the help Bro. My incredible is just a stubborn ***** LOL Great job on the windows app

Virus on my moms laptop.

Alright. She has some weird program on there called "System Tools 2011" and I don't know how it got there. Right when you boot up, a minute into it, it pops up the app and a wallpapers and blocks you from A LOT of things. You can't back up files to a USB, can't access Control Panel, etc... when I did get into the Control Panel, it won't allow me to uninstall the app because it doesn't show up and there is no way to uninstall it. Is there anything I can do to get rid of it? Any ideas? Let me know please. Thanks.

Download RKill and run it!!! search Google about RKill. And stop turning it off and on...that will damage your computer to the point of no return
I've removed that virus from two computers already but read above!!!
Nice to see you around little one
Or you can google the name and find the registry keys for said virus and remove them. DOne that at work manny times and saves the time of backup and format
I have had to literally roll back my computer to an earlier date to get rid of the annoying pop ups and remove viruses like that. And yes, I got them from torrents.
As an IT Tech for many years those Viruses are a pain to deal with. I use a paid AV Boot CD called Avast BART or you can try using TRK (Trinity Rescue Kit) Bootable CD AV's work best as they are seperate from the OS. Try TRK just google it and burn it to a disk. Best of luck!
Malwarebytes/Spybot/NOD32 cocktail also does a pretty decent job at getting rid of that crap. Just remember to turn off System Restore or your viruses will be back upon booting your computer.
MalwareBytes anti-malware is great but some viruses are so good that they will block any known anti-virus program from executing.
What are the Symptoms of System Tool 2011 Infection?
It will modify Windows Registry and add the following entries:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\System Tool 2011
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run “5648541024″
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run “[random]”
The threat will drop the following malicious files:
%AppData%\[random]\
%AppData%\5648541024
%AppData%\5648541024\5648541024.bat
%AppData%\5648541024\5648541024.cfg
%AppData%\5648541024\5648541024.exe
%UserProfile%\Desktop\System Tool 2011.lnk
%UserProfile%\Start Menu\Programs\System Tool 2011.lnk
How to Remove System Tool 2011 Manually
1. Restart your computer in SafeMode
- Press F8 on keyboard as soon as you turn on the computer
- Select SafeMode to start the computer loading only minimal resources
2. Delete Windows registry entries the malware created. It is important to BACKUP YOUR REGISTRY FIRST.
- On Windows Start Menu, Click Start > Run
- Type in the field, regedit
- Find registry entries mentioned above and delete if necessary
3. Files related to System Tool 2011 must be deleted:
- Browse and delete malicious files detected above.
- Some files cannot be deleted instantly. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to open Windows Task Manager, look for any virus-related files mentioned on this page and highlight it, click End Process. Try to delete the file once more.
4. Run Antivirus Program
- You must be connected to Internet to be able to update your anti-virus program. This is needed to have the latest database available and detect newer threats.
- Thoroughly scan the computer and clean or delete all detected threats.
+1 for rkill > malwarebyte
if rkill doesn't work at the first time, keep running it until is says successful

Any possibility you could add some more tags to improve other's chances of finding it? I'm certain there are lots more folks looking for exactly this kinda tool.
hey so this seems like a good use of getting around some bugs for usb mount... but quick question, im trying to open the QtADB.exe file, and then it asks me for the path to adb and aapt binaries. I've installed the adroid-sdk package, so where do I point the directory to? my android sdk path is on c:/-program files (x86)- Android. The FAQ doesn't really help in answering questions...

Point it to the exact directory in which adb and aapt are found should be something like c:/program files (x86) - android/tools

Easy-Mount Script for Mounting MTP in Ubuntu

The following script will install necessary files for mtp and copy a Unity launcher that runs either a mount or unmount script so you can access the filesystem on your nexus 7 without having to resort to wifi.
This is not original work, the code was adapted from here
Background...why move away from UMS to MTP?
“MTP is a big improvement over USB mass storage — for devices with lots of internal memory, a manufacturer no longer needs to come up with some hard partition between the USB mass storage and internal storage. Instead, they are all in one partition, with MTP providing access to the directory of media files that would normally be available through USB mass storage. This means there is no longer a need for apps on SD card for such devices, because what used to be the ‘internal SD card’ is in the same partition as where applications are stored. The storage on your device can be used for either applications or media, depending on what you want to put on it. You aren’t stuck with how much space the manufacturer decided to leave for the two areas.
Oh also this means that the media storage doesn’t need to be unmounted from Android when it is being access through the PC.“
Using the Script:
1. Run install_me.sh by double-clicking and running in terminal, or launch sh from terminal
2. After install script completes, it will drop you to $HOME/.local/share/applications, copy over the file called Mount Nexus 7 Filesystem to your Unity Launcher
3. Right click on the Nexus 7 icon and chose mount or unmount. Mounting takes about 5-10 seconds, so be a little patient.
Note: Although Nautilus has an eject next to the folder, it will not do anything. You need to unmount from the launcher.
Download:
http://www.mediafire.com/?fbib01go50iij7g
Script Details:
Install mtpfs package
Copy over a Nexus 7 icon for the launcher
Copy a mount and unmount script to your $HOME/.scripts folder
Copy a desktop file (unity launcher icon) to your $HOME/.local/share/applications folder
The desktop file calls either the mount or unmount script from the .scripts folder to mount as mtp filesystem

I'm gonna give that script a try once I get the runt off the school bus.
I had it work once or twice, but now I'm not having much luck. Nautilus seems to be force closing a lot. I even rebooted, no difference. In fact even if I force close Nautilus and bring it back, it'll continually spin until I unplug my Nexus 7. The second I unplug it, my home dir files show up perfectly.

All you have to do is change nautilus ~/Nexus7 in the mount_nexus7.sh in the install folder to nautilus ~/Nexus7/*
Save
Uninstall the script and the install again.
This is SO much easier than using gMTP.
it work for me ,but can we do something so that it automount when we plug in the usb?
How do I remove Nexus 7 folder?
Hello, my name is Chisa and I'm a noobette
I followed your directions on "Easy-Mount Script for Mounting MTP in Ubuntu" to view my Nexus 7 tablet folder from my Linux desktop file explorer. Everything went according to instructions - I copied and pasted the command lines into the terminal and watched as the mysterious machine gibberish scrolled like it was doing something important... and then, finally, I saw the Nexus folders in my Linux Mint file explorer, although, it shows empty
Being the ADD noobette that I am, I moved on to another app promising the same thing - the gMTP - and lucky me, this one worked and can be installed directly from the software manager in Linux Mint. It's still not the ideal fast and simple file transfer like it is with my Nokia phone usb connection - why can't things be kept that simple?
So now I'm in a pickle: cannot delete the Nexus 7 folder created by your script. How do I make it go away? Is there something to uninstall?
I didn't try any other script besides this one. I promise
Reboot worked

AW: Easy-Mount Script for Mounting MTP in Ubuntu
I'm using Kubuntu and kio-mtp, that combination works very well for me. It integrates the mtp protocol into dolphin so i just have to plug in the N7 and it shows up in the "removable media"-popup. Just google it, the post on the German Ubuntu forum is pretty self-explanatory. There's also a ppa.
I don't think it's gonna work with Gnome3 or Unity though, as far as i know it's only for KDE.

Is my XZ3 Hacked?

Hi everyone,
I installed infected flashtool app wa strying to flash my xz3, usb debugging was activated when windows detected a malware from the computer during flashtool setup while my phone was plugged, is there any possibillity to be hacked? and if so, is wipping data and factory reset would solve the problem? thank you all.
Rvn.
I believe so. If not we can solve anything here lol
Of course it's possible
ID the issue. Isolate your backup data drives from both machines until proven clean.
A factory reset won't get rid of flashed malware... a hacker's wet dream.
If so you need reflash with a clean rom copy.

Lol, but In android even if usb debugging activated you need to approve the access to it whenever a computer going to use it, a window pop up on your phone to either approve or deny which it didn't appear at all. So I'm safe I think?

I didn't get this at all, so computer got no access through USB debugging then phone is safe right loool
Dont feel safe JUST yet...
If the adb window for granting keys does not show, that could be a warning sign, that adb MAY still be hacked (if hacked at all)
disconnect fone, go into developer options. look for revoke permissions, then plug fone back in, tell me if you see the window again?
Sometimes it goes into the background and you cant see it in time so it shuts you out...
If all goes well, on pc,
adb shell (should give grant window in fone)
settings put secure install_non_market_apps 1
settings put global adb_enabled 1
settings put global setup_wizard_has_run 1
settings put secure user_setup_complete 1
settings put global device_provisioned 1
settings put global development_settings_enabled 1
then even after a flash, if you never flashed your bootloader, you wont need to continually grant keys
Thanks for your time and answers brother..
But to make it more clear, I wasn't at a point where it had to show up (ADB window on phone), I just opened the app flashtool, I have seen it getting online stuff from GitHub and getting ready, after that it started detecting the phone after Malware Warning appeared on windows, at this time I just removed the phone and it wasn't into any mode. Only usb debugging was active.
I hope I make it more clear, and waiting your answers. Thanks a lot.
You've a virus in your pc, so fone wont allow you to connect until you remove virus ?
Deal with the virus first, then we'll probably find out your fone is fine...
Flashtool MAY be seen as a virus in windows so you may need to disable some security settings, it may not be a virus at all :O
Edit, best doing flashtool offline btw
I love you man, really I appreciate your time and help, now it's fine. I understand. Thanks a lot guys.
