Play services battery drain xperia z3 compact - Xperia Z3 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi to everyone. I have a problem with google play services that drain my battery (It consume about the 25% of the battery). I've tried to reinstall the rom with xperia companion and I've also tried to use greenify, (with xposed and donation package) but the problem persist. I have MM .291 built. I'm thinking to downgrade to KK or LL.
Thanks guys

If you use both 4G and wifi, you can Restrict app background data. Then Google Play Services cant drain battery during 4G network.
Settings > Apps > Google Play Services > Data usage > Turn on Restrict.

I've restricted background data. Now I'm going to monitor the battery usage. Thanks

I've struggled with this for months without success.
Switching to the Sony Concept Rom sorted it, but I prefer the regular z3c rom.
Interested to hear if you solve it!

I've restricted background data of google play services, but I've noticed that whatsapp messages don't arrive if the phone is in standby
I'm thinking to install a custom rom such as AOXP 1.5.7 ROM, X P E R I E N C E & R O M™ or Discontinued Rom

oh. im not use whatapps, but my fb messenger still work well.
Have you try this way: keep Play services running, but turn off Google Backup Transport (Settings > Backup & Reset > Backup my data FF); turn off Google Location History (Location > Google Location History : OFF); manage your Google sync (accounts > google > turn off some settings you dont need it)

This "Google Play Battery Drain" is NORMALLY just after you flashed a new ROM, and Google has to synchronize settings + data with you device. It should settle itself after normal usage time ( ~ 5 - 7 days)!
As you stop more services / process, Google Play Services will try to restart those even more frequently, resulting into a more heavy loss of battery power. ( --> don't do it for the first week! )
Mind if you tell me what ROM you are using?

He basically says what I'm saying, leave the device alone, don't make any fancy changes in the first week, then after that, log the battery performance.
By "Stock Rom" you mean the orignal .ftf rooted + xposed OR SliMM .291 rooted + xposed?

Nope, It's an original Sony stock rom that I've rooted following this guide https://forum.xda-developers.com/z3-compact/general/guide-newbshow-to-291-mm-z3clocked-t3536395
but now I would try this one https://forum.xda-developers.com/z3-compact/development/rom-aoxp-rom-v1-t3478863 that also promise to fix the play services battery drain.
In any case should I do a factory reset, do not restore any previous backup and then let the phone alone for the first week right?

Yep, just let it settle itself before doing anything outrageous
And use it like you normally do, but don't care about the battery anymore. Most times it's a placebo effect, as the constant fear of something can result in overexaggerating things.

Now the battery usage seems return to normality. Play services consume only 6%
Only the "android operative system" consume is still high, but I think is normal... maybe...

[Q] Low battery life

Hi, I have problem with my battery life, I've bought new samsung s3 mini and got it with android 4.1.2 but battery life is pretty low, it can't last for 24 hours, can I do something to extend my battery life ? I text few sms messages, talk about 15 minutes, wifi is almost always on, screen brightness is set to minimum when ever I can do it, check little bit news over opera browser (maybe 15 minutes of use per day), also make few call over viber (about 10 minutes per day).
I've read that update samsung firmware via kies can help improve battery life, what should I do ?
p.s. my phone is not rooted if that is impormant, also I am neewbie
Thanks for help in advance
factory reset from settings fixed my AndroidOS draining, had to install apps and **** again but its not so bad.

I'll try that tommorow, yes apps need to be installed again (my phone is 7 days ''old'' so I don't have so many apps)
p.s. did you installed all same apps and games ? I am asking this because maybe some app or game that you had previously installed was making android OS draining battery

if androidOS is draining then it is not your personal apps, its the android system, reset should solve that. disable syncing and 3g when not using.
Root it then download setcpu or free equivalent from play store. Set max CPU to 800.
Install crossbreeder tweaks.
All info is available just search.
Battery life will improve.

yesterday installed app called better battery stats so I'll try this app for 2-3 days so I can get info what process is making problem, and then do factory reset, if that doesn't solve my problem maybe to change stock rom with one that kernel is XXAMD3 (will I loose warranty if I do that?)
p.s. do i loose warranty if I do root ?

Yes, betterbatterystats the best way to narrow down whats causing the drain before you decide to wipe everything.
You'll lose warranty while you are rooted, but you can always go back to stock, and no one will ever notice
Only problem is if something gets damaged so bad you cant use odin to flash. Then you might have problems
to restore it to default state before service.
See my former post, hopefully it can help you, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41741957#post41741957

I'll try it all, just need some time to experiment, I'll post my opinion and results
p.s. I disabled this:
s-voice
active aplications
bh telekom (some app from my network provider)
game hub
samsung account
sns
software update
also all the time I am on 2G, wifi is almost all the time on, brightness is set low as it can be, power saving mode is on, now I turn of vibration for calls, etc
for me, the battery drainer was the Dropbox app(maybe i didnt set it right)....anyways,it wasnt showing that it was the Dropbox draining..i mean after i installed that app my Android OS went over 50% usage while it used to be below 20% on those battery charts...
anyways after i uninstalled it,everything went back to normal, getting easily 1 day heavy usage(gaming included), or at least 2 days of medium usage( just regular calls and text and some viber over wifi)
so, from my experiance so far(have the phone over 6 months now), i recommend you to try to remember which apps you installed last and uninstall them...restart the phone and see if that works b4 you go to factory resets and all that stuff....cheers
since I installed task killer and set it to crazy mode (killing apps every 30 minutes), and disabling many apps to get notifications (list of apps is 2 post above) my battery with medium use endurance is better, it last more then 24 hours but I think that battery could last for 2 days with this kind of use. here is photo from betterbatterystats, is anything unusual ?
p.s. next testing step is to do factory reset or install some other kernel version

task managers drain more battery imo because they wake up the phone every time and kill apps in the background that will just restart again because they are set to run in the background, android automatically kills tasks that you ran earlier after an amount of time, anyway more info here

Install Juice Defender, the free version can solve your problem, increasing 60% the battery life.

I'm using JD on S3 Mini and Note 2.
tnx, I'll try this app also,

did you feel the change of battery life on that ROM AMG1 ? did you use some other ROM on 4.1.2 before that ?

I'm using the last from SamMobile since the first day with my devices...
I've tried also the AMG1 Rom, but i didn't see any difference btw. this and other roms.
I've also tried to use a unrooted rom and there is also a massive battery drain.
now i've ordered a new battery. perhapes it lasts longer.

I do not have this problem, but I use a PL ROM from T-Mobile - AMB2.

[Q] Won't go to Deep Sleep

My BS is draining battery like 30~40 percent per night( 7 hours ) when it's idle no Wifi, Data, and with Power Saver
This has just started recently so i uninstall all the apps i installed prior to this incident.
I don't have any battery saver app or that kind of stuff, but i downloaded Wakelock Detector to find out what's draining my battery...based on it's result my BS won't go to deep sleep.
Is there any way to make it normal again, i usually only lose 4~5 percent per night.

It's a common problem, a lof of users are complaining recently about drain of battery on forums. The root cause is Google services, that won't allow the phone to get into deep sleep. I can't say what exactly helped me, but I would suggest to clean data of all google apps including google service framework - that what helped me. more threads on xda: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2378962, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2385843

You can find everything in "All apps", just swype right to the end. It'd be better to disable app first and apply "force stop" and then "clear data", after enable it again. if you see any warnings, just click OK.

[Q] Battery settings in 23.5.A.1.191

I've noticed that the battery life got worse with the latest 23.5.A.1.191 update. With previous version I could leave the phone on desk overnight and the battery did not drop at all (flat line in the battery usage graph). Now with the Stamina comeback I can see a 10 to 15% drop overnight. Can you please share your ideas what settings I should look into to fix it? Thanks
Have u check your wakelock? Play services often do this idiot bug.
Yes, Play services was the app draining the battery, but I remembered that I installed Google Fit in the meantime. Additionally something got messed up with the location after the last update, so I did not see a detailed route but just a large circle on the map in Fit (maybe permissions for gps location?).
However uninstalling Google Fit fixed it. I woke up today and saw a flat line in the battery usage.
I leave data usage over night and , since I have this phone, my battery draining from Google Play services is abnormal. I only synd gmail, no other service, no other permission. I've used Gservicefix without any result. Does anybody know why?

There are lots of reasons why Google Play Services are eating your battery, try a few fixes yourself, check which version of Play Services you have installed , anything older than 9.4.52 needs replacing.
Remove your google account, wipe data for Play Services and Download manager, restart to recovery, wipe cache/dalvik. Restart phone, add account again.
There seems to be issues with fitness trackers and bluetooth, if you have bluetooth on all the time, see what happens if you turn it off?
I can recomend Greenify app that can make a difference in putting apps to sleep, it also helps you see which apps are awake and on.
Check in settings/developer options/running services to see what's on and using most memory, you might be surprised at what you find. To enable developer options go to settings/about phone - press on build 8 times, then you get a message that develper options are availabe in the settings menu.

the first couple of days after an update or a factory reset, google play services collects a lot of information. It should go back to normal after some days. Anyway, I can give you some suggestion to limit the battery drain:
- new Stamina is a rebrand of the normal battery saver. Don't keep it always on.
- if you want something reminding the old stamina, download Greenify, follow instruction for adb command to enable Aggressive Doze and enable Doze on the go. Take away optimization from battery advanced setting for apps you need push notification from (e.g. whatsapp)
- disable wifi scanning when wifi is off (search in settings wifi scanning, though the search button. If your language is different from English (US) and you don't find the setting, switch to English (US) to find it)
- restrict google play services background data when not in wifi
- in account/google disable the sync for whatever you don't strictly need (play newstands, g+, ...)
With this settings, I can get 5 hours sot in a couple of day of usage, and almost no battery drain over night.
Well, my daily use consist on:
- Traffic data always on
- watch clock when needed
- +-45min WhatsApp
- Some random search.
- Some rare use of torch
- Sync with Gmail(ONLY Gmail)
I only use wifi for updates and don't have any gps or bluetooth use...Battery last above 48h this way and google services hast half of time with radio antena on.

Battery Life and Wakelocks

Hi guys,
so i newly setup my phone recently with OOS 4.0.3 in order to have a clean phone for the most efficient use.
For my surprise, for the first time using the 3T my energy efficiency was very good, i managed to get 4,5h SOT with the first 50% because i had almost no drain when the screen was turned off.
I attached the screenshots.
Basically, i just flashed OOS 4.0.3 and the newest franco kernel and magisk for root. I didnt use greenify (which i usually do), just the strict standby option in the android settings.
So far so good, but now to the part i cant understand.
I installed gsam battery monitor and gave it root access, so i can have detailed battery information.
From that point, i experienced again the standby drain combined with wakelooks, as u can see in the screenshot starting around 60% of the battery.
So far i uninstalled the app, i used greenify, but i cant get back when i had no wakelocks.
Is it really because of Gsam Battery? How can get away the standby drain without setting up the phone completely new?
PS: I also deactivated some of the access rights of apps, especially for play services.
Is it possible that they regain the access by themselves or that google play services is draining the battery

Don't deactivate app rights of play services. It would break the functionality randomly and u won't know what happened. Just enable and reboot. Next time something happens, check the stat in gsam battery monitor. It's a good app and I am using it from 3 years.
It's not gsam I've had it installed on every phone for years and I always get amazing battery life.
I dont use google apps at all besides gmail and maps sometimes. But ill try around if it makes a difference.
I also cant believe that GSAM really is the problem there, but i didnt change anything else, i was just surprised of the good battery life and wanted to see the characteristics of battery statistics when i have a normal standby drain.
And immediatelly from that point on, the standby drain changed as u can see on the screenshots, even after uninstalling GSAM.
I now get 2h SOT with 50%, not 4,5.
So, is it possible that anything influencing that is changing by itself?
I didnt install any app or changed any setting, all i use was setted up in the beginning (franco, magisk, viper, all apps)
Yes google play store and google play services if you downloaded it and installed it that way? Google ruins battery life very randomly. If you restored a titanium backup or sideloaded the app then I have no clue. Even if you didnt do anything different there are a ton of things that can go wrong with android in the background. Recharge and reboot and start over.

I just now wiped also system and dirty flashed the ROM + the stuff i need. Ill see it that solves the deal.
I just cant accept to not have the control over my phone as thats one of the advantages of rooting. I got the same battery life with same usage with my 2,5 year old OnePlus One.
I run the same apps on every phone and this phone has doubled the performance and battery compared to my nexus 6 note 5 and nexus 6p. First phone I've owned that actually sleeps when I turn off the screen.

Some parts of it only work with SuperSU, sure. The important bit that fixes the MRa big does unfortunately.
Not found a magisk equivalent, but I'm eager to find one!
I just recently got my 3T two weeks ago running OOS 4.0.3 and I also notice a lot of wakelocks, especially when on mobile data (3G/4G).
I am still tinkering to figure out what are the root causes for wakelocks in this case.
I suggest you install BetterBatteryStats from XDA, it does provide a lot of good info. GSAM is good too but I prefer BBS. You can grant it permissions to Battery_Stats if you are not rooted.
Here are my findings so far:
Google Services likes to access the GPS a lot, so I turned of Location History. This resulted in fewer wakelocks when the screen is off.
I have changed the GPS and set it to GPS Only so that it doesn't use the cell towers and WiFi to help determine a location. I am not sure if this makes a difference for wakelocks yet.
I know Nougat has doze, I am not sure how well it works...fortunately there is Aggressive Doze in the battery section of the settings. I have not tested this yet but this is something I will look into once I have determined all others aspects that may be causing wakelocks.
I do have the LED notification light enabled and I am using LightFlow to manage it. It works in conjunction with the built-in LED settings from OOS. This is fine, but I do believe this may cause wakelock issues.
Once again, in my experience, I get a lot of wakelocks when I am on mobile data compared to being on WiFi and I am not sure why there is a difference.

Question Google play services is at it again

Hi all,
Is anyone facing an issue with google play services draining the battery...I get so angry when I see that damn app draining my battery...the battery stats says it's running in the background...why, I don't know! It's recent phenomenon and has been running since the past 20hrs or so...how do I solve this? I'm not sure cleaning the data/ cache would be ideal as this would only lead to more drain since play services will try to download all the info that it has previously....any help will be greatly appreciated!
So 1% battery loss from a system service running for 20 hours in the background is a big problem...?
I'm a bit confused here...

Actually, it's a bit more than 1%...more like 23% over the past 6 days or so...here's the screenshot...I don't know if this apt battery usage or if google play services need to be given a knock on its head...

Ah, so 0.16% battery per hour. So a bit more than normal. What version of the phone do you have (which processor) and what apps do you have installed that weren't listed?
Also, how do you keep charging your phone so slightly as shown in the picture?
Oh yes, GPlayS will eat up the battery...
Download Karma Firewall and block Google Play Services. It may be shown by it's UID, on my 10+ it's 10044.
You can unblock it as needed like for Gmail or Playstore (block Playstore as well*).
Block Android Services as well, UID 1000.
It's pretty useless but polls the internet 2 times every minute, GPlayS is 4 times a minute.
On Pie Karma's logging feature works so I can see what each apk is doing or not... Q and up sucks.
*disable if you have a package blocker except when needed. A reboot is required and GPS must be unblocked too for Playstore.
Clear Google Play Services, Backup Transport and Framework data as well. Best to disable the latter two. Someone told the latter two aren't present in Q... I can't verify that either way.

Hi, I have the 21Ultra 12/256. The funny thing is that play services started acting up only lately...I have been using the phone for 1 week+ and this app starting going berserk just 20 hours ago! It's very likely a rogue update could have caused this issue and I'm sure if I uninstall the update all should be fine...let me do that and see how it performs...

My AT&T Note 10+ did the same thing and it wasn't an update that triggered it.
Power management was part of the problem.
I run now with all power management disabled except for fast charging and Optimized screen/cpu setting.
When I turn this phone off it goes into deep sleep...

Power management, you refer to the ones that show in the battery settings right? But I don't know how the battery power management settings relate to google play services drain...I have betterbatterystats and it shows that google play is the top most draining app...why I can't understand...
I have a feeling it's the feb update that's messing with the battery settings..Jan update was cool...is there a way to roll back to update before AUB6?
Here's an update...I uninstalled the updates to google play services and cleared the cache. Rebooted...and all's going well so far.

Definitely try out the suggestions made by @destz0r in the video that he left. I guess that I don't ever experience the same problem as I always leave location services disabled unless I'm directly using them for navigation. But I never would've guessed that GPS occasionally leads to more GPlay Service specific battery consumption (as I had thought that GPlay Services were primarily for inner-Google app data communication)...

I already had all those suggestions in place right at the time of setting up the device initially..but yes, uninstalling the play services update cleared the issue...for the moment...

Power management seems to create conflicts after a few days running. GooglePS includes Backup Transport and Framework. Even when turned off they continue to run in the background on my device.
Play with it, see what you find but don't ignore and let this trashware toast your battery.
