My PC does not see my phone drives when hooked up with USB...suggestions?
Which android version are you on? Which windows version?
You should see something like the attachment when you plug in your phone.
If not:
- Plug in your device.
- When it shows you "usb charging", click on that, and select the option to transfer files.
- You may need to turn on usb debugging, or select "use device as driver installer"
If that doesn't work, let me know. You probably have a driver issue and need to load mediatek usb drivers.

Was wondering is there a way to use our galaxy as a universal usb mass storage device, using default windows drivers?
I've tried it but I can't seem to connect my phone to the pc unless I install either the usb drivers (extracted from Kies) or install kies itself.
In ubuntu can just hook this up no problem why in windows doesn't it work? or am I doing something wrong? Any help would be great.
thanks.
Wich part of Android Development Forum you dont understand?
why don't you can suggest me one or point me in the right direction or notify a mod instead of posting something that's not helpful and insulting?
and indicate why this would not go in development? yeah it can be in general but why can't it be in here explain the reason. This can be the initiation of someone developing a hack to allow to use our device in windows without INSTALLING the samsung drivers?
You don't need to install any samsung anything.
Settings -> About Phone -> USB Settings: Ensure "Ask on connection" is selected.
Plug in USB cable, connect to PC.
Select "Mass storage" on the menu. Your device is now connected and charging, but you don't have access to the data yet.
Now drag down the notification bar from the top of the screen. It says "Ongoing: USB connected. Select to copy files to/from your computer". Press that. Press "Mount".
Your Internal SD and external SD now mount on your PC and appear as drives.
gl
Edit: If that doesn't work for you then there's something wrong. I haven't installed Kies on any machine I've connected the SGS to. It may be that you require Admin rights to install the usb drivers that are sent over as the device attempts to mount (not sure).
hmm that's weird. My machine says it doesn't recognize it when I do that. And all the machines I use I have to install the drivers for it to work even though I always use "use as mass storage"
hmmm I better do more investigation then.....
just tried this on a winxp machine without any driver/kies installed and yeah can't get to the sd card. It has an exclaimation mark next to the Usb mass storage device in device manager and there an "unknown" device detected in the "other devices" section of device manager....
Try the always ask option. Sometimes the use mass storage as default choice is a tad cranky.
If not, try on another usb port with another microusb cable. I've tried on 3 pcs/laptops and all 3 times no drivers were needed.
You also have to pull down the notifcation menu of the phone (once connected) and click the usb symbol and then choose "mount" (yeah, kinda sucks)

the drive that it installs when you connect your device to your PC with selecting USB Mass Storage is a normal USB driver, like when you plug in a normal memory stick...
Check your usb port or cable and try other ones
Or install Kies then uninstall it.
It will leave the Samsung USB drivers installed as they are in a seperate folder.
really weird could it be a winxp problem?
At work usb mass storage doesn't work UNTIL I install the samsung drivers. At home tested on a win 7 machine without installing any drivers and it works.
Would front usb port be different to teh back usb port? It's just that front usb port doesn't work if I don't install drivers, after install drivers works fine.
hmm I should test the back usb port. It's pissing me off how I can't use usb mass storage at work until I install the drivers (or would it be a windows update issue how windows don't have latest usb drivers?)

both win7 and xp require to install that usb driver unless you've plugged it in before... you definitely don't have to install the samsung drivers before you use the Mass storage function as my office computer (XP) is not allowed to install any other driver/software apart from normal USB mass storage driver in which it's pre-installed in your PC when you install the OS...
Bought a LG P970 Optimus Black.
Installed LGMobile Support Tool into my
Windows 7 64bit.
Installed the LG 3.2.1 drivers using LGMobile Support Tool.
Then, I connected the phone to the computer.
Result of drivers installation:
LGE Android Platform Composite USB Device - Ready to use
LGE Android Platform USB Modem - Failed
LGE Mass Storage Device - Failed
LGE Android Platform USB GPS NMEA Port (COM6) - Ready to use
LGE Android Platform USB Serial Port (COM7) - Ready to use
I wasn't planning to use the phone as a modem, so that driver does not worry me, but the USB storage problem is annoying.
In the phone, it does look as it connected. It offers the option to activate USB storage on screen, and if I click on the button, it says it enabled it, but nothing happens in the computer side.
I tested to uninstall everything LGE from the computer and restart from scratch, but same problem.
Ideas?
Update:
The LGMobile Support Tool in Windows says the phone IS connected, and that the software in the phone is up to date.

No. Nothing at all.
In "Devices and Printers" I have:
Under Devices:
LG Android Phone
LG Android (Modem)
LG Android (Serial)
LG Android (NMEA)
Under Unspecified:
LGE Bluetooth TransPort (COM4)
LGE Virtual Modem
In the "Device Manager" I have 1 "USB Mass Storage Device", with a yellow warning sign.
Under its Properties, in Device Status, it says: "This device cannot start. (Code 10)
If I try to "Update Driver" Windows says that the right driver is already installed.
FIXED !!
Updated LG driver to 3.5.
Still didn't work.
Then, I turned off the phone.
Removed the battery.
Put the battery back.
Turned on the phone.
Connected it to USB.
This time the USB driver started ok, and when I activated the USB storage I was able to see the drive under "Computer" in Windows Explorer.
I had turned the phone off and on before, so I think removing the battery did something that simply turning off and on wouldn't do.

USB 3.0 External Storage Device driver not getting Installed- [Solved]
Issue: USB storage device is not working on my computer, be it a USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 it just doesn't install the driver for storage device and my USB mouse and webcam does work.Everytime I plug in a USB flash drive of USB 3.0 External hard drive it beeps and gives error message that the device driver could not be installed.
Here is the steps I took to troubleshoot this issue and it got fixed.
1.Open registry by going to Run-> Type Regedit.
and Navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{36FC9E60-C465-11CF-8056-444553540000}
Highlight this key ({36FC9E60-C465-11CF-8056-444553540000} ), on the right pane, and then check if “Upperfilters” and “Lowerfilters” value are present. If so, please right click on the values and select "Delete" to remove them.
2. Now go to "C:\windows\inf" folder and check if these three files USBSTOR.SYS, usbstor.inf and usbstor.pnf are available. If it was renamed change the name as I wrote them or if they are not available copy them from "C:\windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\usbstor.inf_x86_neutral_83027f5d5b2468d3"
And then go to "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Drivers" and make sure you have USBSTOR.SYS and usbd.sys available if not copy them again from
"C:\windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\usbstor.inf_x86_neutral_83027f5d5b2468d3"
and paste it to Drivers folder.
3. Open Registry editor by going to Run-> typing Regedit and Navigate to the following key:
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\USBSTOR" and ensure that the Start value is 3. and restart the system.
It will work..
thx

Can't seem to connect to Windows 8 through USB. It chimes and the Touchpad says connected as a media device. But I don't see it in Windows. Tried checking and unchecking MTP in storage settings and nothing.

4. Select Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer
5. Select USB Mass Storage Device then click next.
and/or
6.To transfer files to PC, turn on USB mass Storage from the USB connection notification on the Android device.
The above is.courtesy of RolandDeschain79 install guide.
I've followed this and it worked for me.
Good luck and have fun.
hmmmmmm. Not showing up in portable devices?
OK it detected fine upstairs on a Win 7 machine must be WIn 8 problem, Anybody know how to make it work on Windows 8?
I'm running XP on my machine. Connected USB cable from phone to PC. Selected Media Device (MTP) from drop down notification. Windows went through the general search for drivers. No dice. I have selected/de-selected USB debugging in the Developer Settings. Nothing each time.
Went to Motorola's support page , installed Motorola Device Manager, no dice again. Selected/de-selected USB Debugging in the developer section. Am I missing something here? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
Give this a try - I was able to get it working on XP...

So I was having issues with the drivers on a Win XP machine as well. Here's what finally did it for me:
1. Uninstall drivers from control panel --> Add remove programs...
2. Restart Computer - make sure phone is disconnected from USB
3. Install Motorola Device Manager Software (again)
4. With phone still disconnected from USB go into your phone Settings --> Storage --> Top right three button menu --> USB computer connection. Make sure Media Device (MTP) is checked AND make sure Software Installation is turned OFF.
5. Plug in phone to USB
6. Do not search online for drivers, just let it install recommended drivers. It should find the correct drivers and you should be able to see it as a media player.
This is how I was able to get mine to work - I hope it works for you as well.
Good Luck - and enjoy your Turbo! :good:
Hey Chadster,
Thanks for the tip. I'll give this a go and report back.
In the interim, i did install BitSync on my PC and Turbo to transfer files over which works flawlessly.

Never tried BitSync - although I haven't had any issues with transfer of files, so there wasn't a need for me to search out for a different solution.
For what it's worth - just installed MDM on my Win 8.1 laptop and things connected even easier than with the WinXP machine.

Hello Chadster, at Step 4, what do you mean by making sure Software Installation is OFF? Where do we do that?
Thanks!
--- SOLVED see first post second page! ---
Hello XDA,
I am only able to read data on the phone when connected via USB on windows. On the phone itself I can change whatever I want ( Via ES-explorer for example) But in windows file explorer I can't. It will not tell me that I do not have proper writing rights, but instead just decides to freeze for 10 minutes everytime I try to make a file change, to eventually give me a beautiful
"windows explorer is not responding" pop-up
What I have tried :
-Rebooting,
-Reinstalling USB drivers,
-Switching USB debugging on and off,
-Reinstalling root,
-Installing the newest Oxygen OS update from February,
-used different cables (also an old micro USB with adapter) And nothing works.
This sucks because I was just trying to change my photography workflow from being Desktop based to being Android based..
Any suggestions ?
Greetings,
Thijs

Did you maybe noticed when this problem occurs to you? I know that one months ago it just did work. Should I reinstall Windows completely?
I've been talking to a few people and it's happening to them to on Windows 10 I think it's just a bug from a recent update try a roll back

How should one file a bug-report for windows 10 then, this can't be something that shouldn't keep unnoticed by them.
Did rolling back fix something for you, and how did you do so?
I've checked another Windows 10 computer which hasn't been updated and it recognises my one plus 3T so if you Google / YouTube windows 10 roll back it should work
Hmm this does suck. This means I cant be up to date on windows for now. Anybody have different suggestions?

The only other thing I could suggest is using a virtual machine to run win 7
Did you try back usb ports?. My pc with windows 10 fails with the front ports.
Solution
Backup all the data in your internal memory and try the 'format data' option from twrp to wipe your internal storage. It could solve your problem, as it did in my case.
New solution, just done works!
Plug in your phone and on the computer go to device manager (have phone in MTP mode)
you'll find the phone as a unknowen device
right click on this select "update driver software..."
a window will pop up select "browse my computer for driver softaware"
then on the next bit select "let me pick from a list of device drivers on my comupter"
then you will have a box with "MTP Device" and "MTP USB device"
select "MTP USB device" hit next and it should work 100%

Which version of TWRP are you running? The thing is that If I afterward can't restore the data via USB haha, then the whole point of backing it up seems invalid

I doubt there's much we can suggest that you haven't already tried. Try another cable/USB Port/uninstall device from Device Manager and let Windows find the driver. Hell, you probably did all that already.
