I am just wondering what the longevity is for the nexus 4. Will I be able to use it for at least 3 years cause I am done keeping up with the joneses
But the nexus 4 does have a few shortcomings that makes me thing it will not have that much longevity. To name a few
- storage is only 16gigs
- camera is not the best on the market
- no lte
- launch is a huge failure. And it makes me wonder if the community is going to pick up some steam or if people are holding out for the N5 or the S4
How future proof is the nexus 4?
You can hold on to the Nexus 4 as long as you want. For some the phone may fit their need for 6 months and for others the phone may fit their need for 3 years. You have people still using the the Nexus One that came out in 2010.

In my opinion, yes. I see this device as being relevant for at least 3 years, and no less. There will be faster things in 3 years, that's no question. But this device will remain relevant due to Google's software support and it being a Nexus device, XDA's unconditional support in the long run.
Second, it will also be useful for at least 3 years due to the awesome LG tech sprinkled in which bumps up the 500-full charge cycles to 800 cycles before the battery starts capping off at 80% of its original charge.
Things like storage, camera, etc, that's really a personal choice for you. For people who don't need it, the N4 is a no brainer. I've personally been more than satisfied with the camera.

I wouldn't say the launch was a failure. Actual Demand far exceeded projected demand this is a win in my eyes. Was the launch frustrating, yes but that does not equate to failure

Smart phones are slowly getting to the same point at desktop PCs. You will be able to perform most basic functions on a older device with gamers and geeks demanding the latest and greatest hardware.
A friend recently picked up a sgs2. She does not game and is a light user and the phone runs fine.
The only thing that you might want to upgrade early for is lte.
Full disclosure: I live in canada so I already have a lte n4

It depends on ones usage. There's still plenty of people perfectly happy with the Galaxy S, iPhone 3GS, Nexus One etc. And those devices are approaching 3 and even 4 years old. And those are single core phones with 512mb of RAM or less. A 4th of what current devices are coming out with. I'd imagine the crop of dual core phones with 1gb+ of RAM released in 2011/12 will last just as long if not longer. Dual core still has yet to be completely saturated and now we're coming out with quad core phones. Software still has plenty of catching up to do. I'm fully expecting to get 2-3 years out of my Nexus 4 with my current usage.
The person who mentioned the SII above is exactly right. Most good smartphones from the SII on will be fine for years unless there is some specific application that requires something that only a newer phone will have. Personally, I held onto the SII for a couple of years and expect the N4 to last as long if not longer (mind you my boss and a lot of people still have blackberries/"smart"phones that are ancient and are perfectly happy). The only things that might require an upgrade is if you are really into pictures and use it as your primary camera and need LTE; then again if you bought the N4 with a view to keeping it for a while, I am guessing that neither of these apply to you.
The lack of replies have made me seriously consider the iphone 5. I opened this topic yesterday and I only got like 6 replies. I am wondering how long this device is going to last since the community right now is nonexistent. If there is no community for this phone then the phone has zero longevity.
At least the iphone 5 is going to be supported for a while and has that longevity.
The Nexus 4 will be supported by Google for 2 years AT THE LEAST, probably more.
I will determine how long i am going to use mine when i FINALLY get the f*cking thing!

No community? What? This is a Nexus, bro. The community is just getting started. It is the main reason I bought this phone.
Maybe you should get an iPhone 5. I think it would suit you.
The Nexus 4 has all the raw power required in a smartphone for the foreseeable future, but the x-factor is what other things will be added to phones in a year or two. New sensors that have compelling use cases or new radios that allow a new kind of connection will be the things that cause this phone (and each of its contemporaries) to be less usable

There are already far more than 200.000 posts in the Nexus 4 section of XDA. Not bad for a device that is barely 3 months on the market. Official support for a number of custom roms (including Cyanogenmod) is already there and you are talking about a nonexistent community?

Wrong. Its a nexus with a failed launch, with rumors of a nexus5, finger pointing and the galaxy s4 right around the corner. And it already lags behind other flagship phones in terms of specs
The phone will last until it breaks. I'm guessing five to ten years?
Come on, we used to have phones for years, with zero updates, and were perfectly happy.
Galaxy s2 does pretty everything my nexus 4 does and probably more, it's just a little slower.
With this phone as it stands now, with zero new updates, it'll last as long as you want or need.
Only way you might want new features is if you buy into samsungs touchwiz enhancements like split screen etc.
edit: As for lagging behind other flagship phones in terms of specs? You mean the Droid DNA and the Butterfly J? Because they are the only phones I can think of that are out now, with any kind of jump on the Nexus 4 hardware wise, and they are only available in the good old U.s of A and Japan? please...

No one has any clue how well the Nexus 4 will hold up after 3 years. It hasn't even been in our hands for 3 months.

Ok whatever. Thats not the point. The point is is that the specs of the next gen phones are already out and their are going to be released pretty soon. And at this moment the community of the nexus 4 still hasn't picked up steam 3 months after release.
I and many others are thinking with next gen phones right around the corner would it still be wise to get an outdated nexus4.

I think what hurt us die hard fans some was that the leaks came out early and it seems like we have already been waiting an eternity.
Release phone first then OS
I think the KitKat is delaying the release of the phone. The phone is definitely ready. They could release the phone first followed by OTAs. I wouldnt mind bugs

Being an Android enthusiast(or over enthusiast like others ) I'm expecting KitKat as much as Nexus 5. Without KitKat changes(hope there have some tricks up their sleeve) Nexus 5 is just like iPhone iteration.
Using an iPhone 5 and can't wait for the Nexus 5 to be released.
Praying for a 64gb version and flashing Roms on my HTC One. Will be selling it and grabbing an N5 if there happens to be a 64gb version. Not likely but one can hope.

I have a 5s as well and was thinking about selling but if the Nexus 5 is $300 with those leaked specs I may use the Nexus 5 as a mini tablet instead of getting a Nexus 7 2013. I also don't want to use custom roms on my daily driver anymore due to my crack flashing habit. Plus I do like the small size, FaceTime with the wife and speed of the iPhone.
And you got to figure that the Nexus 5 will hold its value very well compared to a Nexus 7. I know it's not a tablet but compared to a 4" inch iPhone it's pretty close. And if the Nexus 5 has a ir blaster I would be in heaven.
What is it about the Nexus phone that wanting me to keep coming back...
I bought it when it first came out on the Google store. After a few months of using it, I traded for the LG G2. The G2 is nice and all but it is not as smooth as the Nexus for sure. So, I traded to Nexus 5 again.. After another month of using, I traded for the HTC M8. The M8 is nice build but with a case on, no one notice any different. I can not even deposit checks to my bank using the M8 camera. So now I thinking of coming back to the Nexus again..
Just wondering if anyone in the same situation like me..
Thanks..

i think you should ask yourself: Why the hell i keep buying every phone that comes out?
i've been though like 6 phones in the past year <.<
had the nexus 5 twice and just sold it again cause I managed to get a OnePlus one
I think we all love the nexus mainly because how easy it is to upgrade, customize and because its really the best deal.
I sold the note 3 to get n5 and n7 2013.
I can't complain at all.
Best thing about it is they are light way and easy to develop for
Nexus5 usually is the best on XDA for Development and Fun
I'm personally thinking of getting rid of my N5 and getting the M8..
I've thought about buying several phones since owning the N5 since launch day. I like gadgets. But I've saved myself the grief and just held on to the N5 as I've played with all the 'latest greatest' flagships (sans the 1+1) and still to this day there is not a smoother snappier Android device than the mighty N5. This phone has spoiled me bad with its stutter-free blazing fast operation. It's going to take one hell of a device to get me to upgrade
I decided to get m8, couldn't be happier. Although the Nexus 5 was and is a nice phone I find the battery to be mediocre. If it wasn't for the battery I doubt I would have picked up the m8

I will say I periodically go back to N5 and am reluctant to sell. I will soon...as I need to handle some bills lol

Mainly just its size. It was too big for practical use for me. I had a hard time making the decision to sell it, there is no question that it's an amazing phone, it just wasn't for me. If you have no problem with a phone that large, then you will absolutely love it. It is a seriously bad ass piece of hardware.

Yeah, the Note 2 is too big for me too. I guess I'm just not a phablet guy. The N5 fits my large screen needs perfectly. I also have a Moto X which I absolutely love, and an iPhone 5s which will get upgraded to the 6 when it comes out. I think 4.7" is the absolute perfect screen size, so I can't wait for the iPhone 6. Gaming on that thing is gonna be amazing.
leaving BIG RED to either Tmob prepaid or ATT GO PHONE.. Im kind of in a smaller town but all have stores here so I am assuming they are ok.. I bought a N5 on swappa.com. I am a little nervous to leave vzw been with them over 12 years but I am tired of the locked down phones and games they play.

Bad idea lol. I just came from an M8 its good but the 1 flaw which is the camera is such a huge let down. The M8 would be the greatest phone Android has ever been on if only HTC would quit ignoring us and put better cameras in their phones. HTC is like Nintendo, kept ignoring the community/tech industry suggestions for hardware for years now they're in last place. They have been for 2 console generations now. On topic lol, if HTC had the camera sensor from a GS5, hell even a GS4 it would be perfect.

Is the camera really that bad? I'm thinking of doing the same and getting the M8. I did see some HDR shots which didn't look as bad as people made the camera out to be. Even on the Nexus I keep HDR on to get better shots. Is the front facing camera better on the nexus also?
What is your reason for wanting a nexus 6? My reason is I want a device that delivers the full experience. I dont want to carry around more devices than i need to. I believe the nexus 6 can be my everything device for mobile. I wanted this after using a oneplus one for a little while. I really liked the big 5.5 inch screen and started to use my iPad less and less after getting it. All i keep thinking was if this was a little bigger and the resolution was a little bigger to match, it would be perfect. Well here came the nexus 6 with a 5.96 inch 1440p screen. I have a nexus 4 and have been loving it except the battery and the camera. So far from the hands on people are saying the camera and battery are better. Also the reception should be better than the oneplus on At&t. The nexus 6 looks big i hear it feels good in your hand and it is a beast with performance. After hearing this I immediately sold my iPad and my oneplus one. I am ready to carry around one device for all my mobile needs. I have big hands so i welcome the size.
What about you?
Android L which in turn means fast updates
Premium Nexus device (internal specs, big screen, front facing speakers, build quality, etc)
I need a good smartphone (currently using a temporary budget phone)
I think it's (one of) the best phones available
I want one for the Chip, native lollypop, size and cause I love my Nexus 5 experience so much that I run GPE on my HTC ONE M8 at&t model .oh and cause I just have to have multiple devices to keep me busy
AT&T HTC ONE M8
My last 11 phones have been Samsungs. I'm looking forward to zero lag.
My Nexus 4 has been showing its age lately in the battery department. I would be lucky to get 3 Hours SOT with the crazy battery. Plus if I reboot the phone in the middle of use my battery goes from 90% to 70% which drives me crazy.
While I know the N6 will not be the end all solution to my Battery life issues, I believe its no better time to upgrade since I skipped over the N5 in favor of this. Plus I am not wholly confident that the Next Generation Nexus devices will be viable for me if they end up becoming the first generation consumer ARA hardware. Something I would preferably like to avoid a year with until they can hammer out issues and wait out until the second generation hardware releases (2016-2017 release).
If* I can get my hands on a nexus 6 then I want one because of how easy nexus devices are to root, unlock and modify. and also because the device looks beautiful and has the specs to drool over. And of course pure stock android.
I too am currently using a budget phone(Optimus F6 anyone? haha) and can't wait for an upgrade.
I'm so tired of being on the outside looking in to the N5 community. Great ROM options, first available updates, and great Devs. Plus who know when we will see another Nexus device compatible with crappy VZW.
I bought the Galaxy Note 2 at launch, then upgraded to the Note 3 at launch. I loved both devices because I go crazy for hardware specs. I've never used a Nexus device before, but on both of my Notes, I realized that I mostly use AOSP custom roms... maybe about 90% of the times (I usually switch up custom roms every month), there's maybe one of two TouchWiz roms that I liked, but all the other ones were always always AOSP (or AOKP, close enough). Now that Google has decided to join the spec race, I for one am VERY VERY happy that the Nexus 6 is so expansive. You Get What You Pay For!!
The Nexus 6 won me over the Note 4, the specs are so incredibly similar it's ridiculous!
So yeah, Nexus 6, I wantz for all the amazing custom roms that will be available on this type of device with such incredible power hosted inside! Can't wait!

Good luck this Wednesday. I got my preorder last week.
Its the motorola nexus that we all thought would never happen. like Rossi going to ducati. I lust hope the phone works better then the ducati. Oh and there is the fact that my g3 is a lag beast. I pick up my wifes g2 and remember what a phone should run like sadly .
Screen size, fast charging, front facing speakers, lollipop and the fact that I have Jump and wouldn't get my monies worth if I don't use it.
Paranoid Android, the end.
Because Nexus, that's why
Cuz I can.
My reason is simple: screen size! Otherwise, I would keep the Z3
Official support and the dev community. And my Note 2 is dying.

sadly I am at work during the time they add stock(between 10 and 10:30) so i doubt i will get one tomorrow either.
After switching to the N5 from the iPhone 4, I liked the screen and eventually I realised I used it more than the tablet that I had and because of that a bigger phone would be the perfect one device for everything.
I've had the Nexus 6 since 2015 February, and I was previously considering a Oneplus 3 but I've taken thoughts and is it really necessary to make a switch to a new device with the Nexus 6 still having major support from XDA? It still runs good, battery can be surprisingly nice at times as well, is the Oneplus 3 or another phone really worth switching to, or is this good for another year?

We pay already to much for smartphones; why buy a new when you have a good working device.
My problems with the N6 are hardware related: the size and the back (round).
I want a smaller device with a 5 inch display. The Nexus 5x fits my needs, but I don't want to pay the current price.

In my mind, the fact that you're asking the question means you don't need/want a new phone. ☺
I think it depends on the next Nexus. I suspect it is going to have too small of a battery. If it does i will keep running this, and it is almost two years old. Like you said still good support and there is nothing wrong with it.
the phone i got before this lasted me around 4 years. im hoping this one will last me at least that long
