hey guys,
I got my car dock a couple days ago and started using it day 1.
impressions:
its sexy but a little hard to move around (prob cuz its new)
but i have a major problem with the nexus one heating up to almost 120 degrees Fahrenheit! and this troubles me cuz i dont want my battery to lose its charge capacity.
and if im on lets say 50% battery and i drive somewhere for 10-15 min using the navi on the car dock
the temp shoots up to 115-120 and the charge goes down to ~30%
anyone else having a problem with overheating while in the car dock?
i used it during the day and night (only to check if the sun was affecting it)
no change in results
i used it with every option on the power control widget off
i ran Advanced task manager and ended all apps before launching navigation
im considered a tech whiz
so ive put this thing through its paces
and they only way to not have my phone burn hotter than the atlanta summer sun is by turning the screen off and listening to the navi...not veiwing it while its on charge and keeping all wireless options and sync off except GPS
ideas greatly appreciated....

I also noticed my Nexus heated up to 40-42 degrees C while using GPS with Screen on for 15 minutes. Burning hot.
no one has any problems?
ive been noticing its msotly because of the sun that it gets scorching hot but at night it does rise past 115 degrees F
120 degrees fahrenheit (49 degrees celsius) is not very hot for computer parts. The reason it reaches those temperatures I guess is because of google maps (if you used that for navi). When you use google maps it's almost constantly using your data connection and that is one of the most battery intensive tasks if I remember correctly.
Oh and I wouldn't classify a little over 40 degrees celsius as burning hot, I've been to places hotter than that, but I guess it's subjective
Seems that overheating is mainly an issue for those running Cyanogen's ROM, no?
My N1 can get hotter than 50 Celsius in under 10 minutes. It's really a bit frightening. I have noticed, however, that this ONLY occurs when the battery is not near full. Turning the screen off seems to help cool it down (more testing needed). However, turning off the screen doesn't help when you need it for gps.
I am using cyanogen, but not the cyanogen kernel. Overheating occurs both in sunlight and at night. I believe it occurred while not running google maps as well, but I can't remember for sure.
I've had no problems, but I did notice how hot it was. I figured it was because of the sun since I had it mounted on my window glass.

You can put your phone into airplane mode after the inital pull and google maps will still function as expected (Except it will not pull down new maps if you stray from the path).
The issue is that you are trying to charge the phone and use it at the same time. The mechanism for doing this charges the battery and depletes the battery at the same time, this makes a really hot battery.
Keeping the screen off when its not needed in the dock and you will have less heat issues when you need to charge your phone in the car dock.

yeah this car dock i am really getting mad at
i wasted 60 bucks for something that heats the hell out of my phone
i listen to music so loud the bluetooth speaker isnt loud enough to tell me where to turn when the screen is off so...
i guess ill try out enomthers rom with the UV kernal and report back
the major cause of it is the sun
because at night the phone doesnt go over 100 degrees F when using the navi

Does anyone having this problem use "set cpu"?
I had a the same problem because my cpu was set to 998 during charging. so then I had the three main things that cause heat ganging up. battery, gps and cpu. All i did was set the cpu to 806 while charging and the heat problem went away...
I imagine that the stockers don't have this problem because they are under-clocked...
The main problem is the sun. I have Rodriguez's rom with the overclock and the only thing causing it to heat up is the sun.
Setting the CPU lower I will try but on setcpu I don't set it to userspace anymore. Its set to ondemand and no profiles set. Ill set a profile for overheating at 120°F to max 806mhz

Anyone experiencing battery heating issues?
The battery temp stays from 25C to 36C when not in use/constant usage.
however, after prolonged period in lockscreen mode, & i unlocking to use it, it heats up pretty fast, playing games worse; ends up with 42C to 48C, highest being 51C.
is this a common issue? (as some of my friends have this prob too), and it's only the dark blue Note.
any ideas for fix?
Mine gets pretty toasty as well. If I use it while charging it, I've seen it get to 48 degrees.
My Battery died tonight. I woke up after i burned nearly my arm becaus of the hot device. it boots shortly because of demaged battery but i dont know if the Note is ok. display issues. It was on CM 04, on 03 i dont have recogniced any heating problems. If my new battery arrives i must test if it has no damage.
@gilrad: i never use my phone when charging so that i can get a more accurate charge.(just my own thinking) still it can get abit hot(but this is the normal heating)
just referring to light/normal/heavy usage.

it was on charging. it boots shortly with battery and charger in but then goes off(usb port). battery doesn't load any more
edit:with charger in wall it boots normally and i can use it but i testet it only shortly, better wait for new battery.

Yep, same here on my Note, International version from Latin America, GB, rooted.
It gets hot when I do intensive activities such as:
- Watching full featured movie (1+ hour)
- Playing games with tons of action (not simple one like Draw Something)
- Browsing website with heavy content (Flash, ads)
So far, has NOT resulted in too high of temperature such that it burn my hand.

My note is heating up very fast. I found when it is heating so badly
1.When you search for 3g networks or wifi signals or when downloading at high speeds.
2.When you start ur flashlight for 5 or more minutes
3.When you use your GPU at most for example watching HD video and playing high quality games
I saw my battery upto 58 degrees
I saw my battery draining like seconds when i started watching a hd video it goes on decreasing from 78,77,76...............27 in just 20 mins time with 3g activated.

Its odd that people report that the Note gets hot while watching videos. Are these online flash videos or something? I use my Note to watch a lot of HD videos, and it always runs cool. It may be to do with the encoding on the video or the player... I tend to encode to High profile H264 and use mVideoplayer. AFAIK, this allows GPU decoding which runs cooler and draws less power.
Some players use the CPU (the early versions of Mobi player did this I think), which gets hotter faster and drains the battery quicker.
Mine often gets hot only after i've left in lockscreen mode for quite a while -> wake-up -> use apps before it cools down after quite some time, with the app still running

and now it's getting a bigger drain even when i leave it locked while i sleep. dropping from 100% to 60% in one night and from battery graph, it shows that my phone's getting wokeup periodically - any ideas..?
and now i have to reboot often once i realise the battery cant enter deep sleep mode -> battery drain. it's monitored by betterbatterystats where my deep sleep time is 0s, anyone got any ideas what's causing the wakes?
It's hard to judge as I've mostly noticed the back of the phone getting pretty hot while playing Spider-man Unlimited (specifically in the area under the camera, indicating the CPU and not the battery). I had the same issue with my Note 2 (the phone I had before this one), except that it would only heat up when I played that game and feel normal during other tasks. On my Note 4, it seems to get hot for everything: camera use, internet browsing, etc. I thought it might be because the phone was "settling" in, but it's been about a week now. So far, unrooted and no other tweaks applied.
Anyone else experience this? Does it justify a return to T-mobile? Will they even do it for an issue like this?
I've had mine since Saturday and it's only gotten warm once and that was while playing Asphalt 8. Otherwise this is much better than my old G3 or Nexus 5
Mine used to. Then it cleared up. I can run it for hours with the screen on while I drive for work and it's fine.
Mine did, and after some digging I realized it was the ims service running up the cpu. I disabled wifi calling, restarted and I've been fine since. I havent tested my theory, but I suspect it may be that some services dont recover properly after using ultra power saving mode and need a restart to function properly.

Me ! It happened to me, just only after 10 days that I brought the phone. What happend was It was just open the whole night while I was sleeping. It was'nt plugged to a charger nor was it connected to the internet ( via mobile data or wifi). The moment I woke up and reached for my phone, It was really hot!!! Very Very HOT!! I could not even touch it with my bare hands! So I turned it off and decided it would need to be changed because I dont know if the cpu is not good anymore. Although all the apps seem to be working perfectly fine, I just had to give it back to retailer AND ask for a new unit!!. ...

So I installed CPUTemp from the Play Store and have monitored the temperature doing various tasks (there's an overlay feature which shows you the temp no matter what you're doing on the phone). While it's not surprising to get above 50C while playing a graphically intensive game, I found myself easily getting into the 60C's during regular tasks.
After contacting a T-mobile tech support rep, I was advised to reset the phone and install as few apps as possible for testing. I made sure not to install Spider-man Unlimited this time around. During the night, CPUTemp recorded a temperature spike of over 70C, when the phone was not being used and should have been sleeping!
Unfortunately, xda search and Google have not been very helpful in determining how high a temperature is too high for this device to be operating at.
Anyone have any clues if what I'm seeing is too high (indicating a defective device that needs to be replaced)? Is anyone willing to install CPUTemp and give me an idea of the kind of temperatures you're seeing while doing things like internet browsing, email, phone calls, etc.?
If you are concerned about the temp, you should exchange it. Full Stop.

Are you running a custom rom? If so, sounds like a kernel issue.

If only it were that simple! You basically have to prove to T-mobile that the phone is abnormally hot, but that's hard to do if you don't have a baseline.

Also, just to repeat: this is an unrooted, unROMed, unmodified in any way Note 4.
I installed that app and tested last night.
Normal temps in 40 - 45 degrees Celsius.
Playing clash of clans it got into the mid 50s.
It never got near 60.
My phone ran hot when I left nfc on all the time . As soon as I turned it off I have been running perfectly cool
I left the CPU Temp running longer.
Temps were between 34 and 57 degrees.
40s for normal use.

I don't know if you're still facing that problem or not but I just wanted to share my experience with your device's predecessor the note 3 because I happen to monitor the temperature most of the time, so while browsing it can get to 53 celsius degrees after a while and loading heavy websites, in games it's mostly in the 50-63 zone depending on how intensive the game is but certain games would push the temperature to 66 and sometimes 69 degrees, I know that the operating temperature of my SOC is 0-70 degrees but it never gets above 70 (Iam using cm11 rom with custom kernel and faux123) keep in mind that you have a faster chip so you might get a bit higher temperatures.
I just use this and I am good.
BAD ASS NOTE 4
Never encountered overheating with the T-Mobile Note 4, but with the AT&T Note 4 I have. Either it has to do with the software (which Firmware you currently have installed) or defective hardware. In the general norm, it also depends what you have running in the background or the particular app being used at the given moment. I had overheating issues with the AT&T Note 4 and nothing was installed. AT&T was a PITA.
Even when playing games my Note 4 doesn't heat up at all. Only when charging. Compared to my S4 becoming incredibly hot.
I would suggest returning the phone. I tested out my Note 4 today for the first time. No games on it. Downloded some apps. It overheated and I was very , very disappointed. Will be returning this unit.

I just bought the note yesterday from a local Verizon store.
I really love it but my battery life is literally TERRIBLE. I've googled a bunch to try and find a solution but I haven't gotten a straight answer. I've heard to resync your google accounts, swipe data and reload everything, but nothing have seemed to be solid.
I am a pretty avid user of my phone and I decently know what I am doing. I am coming from a Razr Maxx x912 with CM10 snapshot M11.
So I charged up to 100% at 10:38 am this morning, went to the Cardinal Lions game. Wanted test the phone out and used pretty significantly. When I got home it was 6:00 pm and I was left with 26% battery. That is not okay.
I am using Google Now Launcher because I hate that you can't center the apps icon on their launcher.
I have location on/off when appropriate, wifi on when needed, no bluetooth, automatic brightness, close out active programs, etc. Nothing out of the ordinary that would suck up the battery.
My battery stats are reading with Android System at 25% use and Screen at 22%.
I've read people getting a total of 22-24+ hours with their Note 4. I'm not even getting about half that.
Did I get a bunk battery? Does anyone know of something I could be doing that is abnormal for battery use?
The phone does runs hot to the touch on it's back. I also get messages from advanced task manage that cloud or facebook has lagged and overdraws battery. I don't know of anything else I've done differently than any use of my other phones that would change my battery draw.
I'm willing to go back to the store and swap out this phone for another Note 4 because I do love the phone.
If anyone would have any ideas I'd appreciate it. Thanks!
I consider myself a moderate to heavy user (gmail, hotmail, facebook, linkedin, dropbox, whatsapp, skype all syncing), often reading news and diff articles throughout the day, light game use.
I only leave wifi on when i'm at home or somewhere where i connect to wifi, otherwise it's turned off.
I usually get from 7am - 11pm with 30% left. Screen on time is the killer - playing games i notice the battery drop quickly.

I would say I am at the same level of use. Emails read and write, Reddit poops, typical facebook scrolling, instragram butts, news, text, Use bluetooth at the gym with wireless headphone, but no games or anything really consuming.
Do you see my situation as typical or atypical as in, is it obscure enough to go in and ask for a different Note 4 since because of the battery?

I assume that your phone would have been using more battery at a stadium with 50, 000 other cell phones its visinity. Your phone would be losing a lot of packets with so much traffic around it

that might be the case but as I was reading forum posts about the battery life on the way home from the stadium I could watch my battery % decrease. On a 20 minute car ride I went from around 33% to 30%.
Compared to other reactions to the battery life online, I don't doubt my battery is depleting abnormally for some reason whether it is in a stadium or not.

Yeah it seems to be draining a bit more than mine. I also listen to about 1-2 hrs music (or podcast listening), plus 1 hr using Runkeeper (that by itself only drains 3-4%).
Maybe give it a few days for the battery to settle in, then see what kind of battery life you're getting?
Are you using Lte, 3g or Edge?

Im moderate user with dropbox, google drive and 3 email accounts sync on. With power savig mode on I go from 7am to 11pm on 60 - 65% battery capacity. I keep screen on manual settings (automatic is to low for my likings) and phone is not rooted so I can't disable some applications running in background (same of them i.e tmobile my account I can close manualy in application manager). Install battery monitor to check if your phone ever go into "deep sleep" or if there is offensive app what keep it "awake" all the time.

Why do you say this? I've never heard to not use them before, so if something else is more efficient or less burdensome that would be great! My task killer has given me the message of apps causing CPU lag and overdraining the battery wit the option to "BOOST". Not exactly sure what this means.. I assume it means boost (kill) completely. Is this normal?
I'm complaining because I've heard so many people loving the battery life on their Note 4, claiming to have a battery life of 22+ hours while I am barely getting 13. I want to ensure that I didn't get a bunk battery and that I might need to swap it out at the store. I love the phone but it bothers me to watch the battery % deplete before my eyes as I use it.
That being said, I watched 20 minutes of the science of interstellar last night after draining the battery completely and then charging it back up to 100% and at the end of the 20 minutes 92%. 8% loss over 20 minutes of video should not happen. Have anyone experienced something similar?
Since Android 2.3, task killer apps will significantly reduce your battery life. When an app is sitting open in the background it is just stored in RAM and is not using any power. When a task killer tries to kill it, it removes it from memory and then the system loads it up again. That causes power drain.

Was that a streaming video or locally saved? If you're streaming over LTE I wouldn't consider that too unusual.
You also haven't given any screen on times, which are very important. I can let my phone sit idle and get ~15 days out of it if I don't touch it, but I could also use it for 7 hours of watching a movie with the screen on and kill it.

Since Android 2.3, task killer apps will significantly reduce your battery life. When an app is sitting open in the background it is just stored in RAM and is not using any power. When a task killer tries to kill it, it removes it from memory and then the system loads it up again. That causes power drain.

Was that a streaming video or locally saved? If you're streaming over LTE I wouldn't consider that too unusual.
You also haven't given any screen on times, which are very important. I can let my phone sit idle and get ~15 days out of it if I don't touch it, but I could also use it for 7 hours of watching a movie with the screen on and kill it.

I was streaming it over wifi via the youtube app, so it was nonlocal.
My stats show Android system at 27%, and Screen 12%.
I charged to 100% this morning and am at 93% now after screen time of 13m 15s.
That's actually really bad if it was over WiFi.. I had this test done (and throughout that post), but the one linked is at 95% of 41 minutes OST (1st post on that page); I also have three emails running (Push - two hotmails, one exchange for work); My test was basically running a Crunchyroll video for the whole time.. I was able to get a little over 8 hours OST at the end of the test; However, if you left your phone on for a few hours, then that's pretty good.. remember the standby mode does kill battery too.. I use a 'deepsleep' mode when my screen is off (80%+ deepsleep from CPU Spy);

CPU Spy for 48 seconds.. I'll post one with a bit longer time next.. but you get the point.. try to get deepsleep when your screen turns off.. (for example, I turn off all the radios (except cellular and bluetooth) when I turn off the screen.. The app I use for this is DS Battery... I had the 8 hours OST test done while using DU Battery, DS Battery, and Memory Manager Full all at the same time.. so now only down to DS Battery left.. from what others say, the apps that clear memory are bad because it reloads them back into services/memory and thus gets more battery drain.. just like getting out of a car door (while you are driving to the store) every minute to check on something, then getting back in.. better to just sit and go the whole trip and get out at the end (which deepsleep mode can do).. the app can run, but it can't do anything because the wifi/mobile data radio is off.. (just like if there was no 'car' in the example);

Other than turning off radios when in DS, do you have any other suggestions?
I was using Google Now Launcher, which I think ran the Okay Google option all the time which sucked some life. I switched to Nova and relinked my google accounts and it seems to be running better.
Ill charge it full and then run it dry and report back with my results.

Turn off Google Now if you don't use it
Turn off Location/GPS or make sure it runs only in power saving mode
Turn off location history in Google settings
Use auto-brightness
Disable Pen detection in the S Pen settings
Disable S voice responding to double-tap of the home button (in S Voice settings)
Don't use the Google search widget which listens for the "OK Google" command
TeslaUnread for Nova Launcher prime drains some battery too, don't use this unless you really like it
Use power saving mode when going out for a big day rather than relying on it as the battery is almost drained
Disable any apps you don't care about i.e. carrier bloat, Google apps like Play Movies, Books, Newstand and Samsung apps like the TV/remote apps, video player if you're using an alternative, cloud syncing processes and print/spool ones as well. This may not make a big difference but it's nice to get them out of sight anyway.
And most importantly, as mentioned previously, don't kill your apps. The only time I kill an app is for big 3D games as I like them to go away rather than sitting in RAM. I also have a little routine, when I do a reboot and full charge, I run all of my common apps like Hangouts, Messages, Phone, Chrome and my weather app so that they are sitting in RAM already while my phone's at 100% rather than draining my battery during my commute to work in the morning. I don't really have any particular reason to do this as my batter never gets anywhere near 0% by the end of the day, I'm just OCD with seeing it drain too much before I even get to work.
I don't think most of the suggestions above are too extreme. Unlike uninstalling commons apps such as Facebook/FB Messenger, or disabling your data/wifi/bluetooth or even turning sync off. To me this is taking away from the purpose of a smartphone, but each to their own.
So I don't know if anyone else have this problem. I'm running stock Sony Xperia Z rooted, the problem was there before I rooted it too. Whenever I use the phone for semi-heavy tasks like browsing facebook.com or watching youtube videos the battery drains quicker than what's being charged.
Is this normal? Does anyone else have this problem?
As i saw on my friend phone, this is normal on stock and on any fw. IMO battery is just old and that's reason why it's happening.

For problem of draining battery when charing and using phone at the same time: its normal, and not only for Stock rom, its actually problem of how phone distribute power and how demanding those apps are that you use. An because most of apps, even those well known like chrome or facebook lack any optimization and android it self really can manage that either... we end in thin phones with powerful hardware(because xz is still good in this term) that make loots of heat and need lots of power.
Solution that I found when I used XZ was buying charger that had 2A or 2,4A instead of deafult 1.5-1.8A. Its not good for battery lifespan in long term time, and it make phone a bit more hot than normally, but Its only solution that actually work: phone dont lose charge when using apps and it charge way faster than normally.
In terms of hot phone when using heavy apps(because even facebook is heavy looking how resource demanding it is)... its normal, Its really bad for usage experience, its annoying... but its normal, new phones have the same problem, OnePlus, Xperia Z3... they all the same. And its all because of power that Android need to run smooth, and thickness of devices.
In Xperia Z we have glass front and back, and glass is not that great in terms of thermal conductivity, so it can keep that temp for few minutes after usage, and it can get hot really quickly. But even if now I put wooden custom made back on my xz, and I put on chip thermal paste that I had after replacing CPU in my pc, it dont get so hot, but I use it now as a smart extension device for my TV, and with MHL cable+charging it hot all the time, but after whole month of usage as a smartTV I can say that high temp dont affect performance so beside annoying usage its not that bad.
the phone lowers charging current when it's getting too hot, i noticed it with amperly app. also thermanager.xml has listed these values in system/etc/
yes this phone is terribly designed, charging takes forever even if you are not using it
