Motherboard switch? - Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi- I'm new here, please correct me if I get anything wrong.
In theory, would I be able to take my Fire HD 8 (6th Gen) motherboard out, and replace it with the (rooted) motherboard from my Nexus 7 (2013), and the tablet would work??
Please let me know.
Thanks!

Highly unlikely as daughter boards (if applicable), display panel and battery characteristics, etc will not match. Not to mention connectors.

How many Kindle Fire and Nook owners bought the Nexus 7?

The Kindle Fire's lack of Bluetooth, GPS, hepatic feedback, compass, and camera have always been a disappointment, but it was easy to rationalize these missing features because of the price (except for the lack of Bluetooth, because that could have been implemented at no extra cost) When I saw the specifications for the Nexus 7 Tablet, I bought one immediately because it was everything that the Kindle isn't.

Bought my wife a nook tablet. Tricked it out as much as I could to make it a real tablet instead of a bn appliance. Bought the nexus for myself... very impatiently waiting

Selling KF, it was good, but now it will be just a paperweight with the n7.
I already sold my Kindle Fire, I will order a Nexus 7.
Most kindle fire owners won't know what the nexus 7" is & are probably loyal to amazon ecosystem. Now the geeks on the other hand are another story.

You could try listing it on the Singapore Craigslist.
Had a Nook Tablet (and previously a Color) but sold it when development of the 3.x kernel kinda ran into roadblocks and stalled.
In for 1 Nexus 7 8 gb, though. 7" makes a great portable video viewer & the price is right for an otg toy....
I have an iPad 64GB wifi+4G, I bought a Nook Tablet to see how I liked the 7" form factor, I ended up real liking the 7" size very much over my iPad but wanted a more standard Google experience. I was able to tweak the NT to where I was almost happy but ended up returning it when I heard about the ASUS ME370T that was going to come out with ICS 4.0. So I've been waiting for this tablet since January.
Why would I want this when I already have an iPad? My iPad cost me $900 including the "Smart Cover", and I have left it at restuarants a few times already, luckily returning to find it turned in @ the register. I am tired of worrying about something happening to my expensive primary computer. My iPad has become the only device I find myself using 95 percent of the time, & the other 5 percent I'm using it to control a PC using the LogMeIn App. I also found out with the NT that I really like a 7" device, as it is way more portable and much easier to hold. I've noticed that when I use my iPad I always prop it up on a surface & use it and rarely hold it in my hands. With the NT I found myself holding it more and using it in more positions than I'd ever used my iPad in. I am looking forward to getting my N7, just wish it still had microSD & HDMI like ASUS said back in January.
So when my N7 arrives it will be my portable computing device & my iPad will become my new desktop/home computer. Will work out nicely now that I can use Chrome on both have my tabs sync'd between the two.
Just a note, if they'd (Google & ASUS) have left the HDMI & microSD port in I could have hooked up my N7 to my monitor, keyboard & mouse, SDHC, and truly used it as my desktop as well & sold my iPad and completely converted over to the Google/Android ecosphere. But as Google has seen fit to remove these coveted ports, I will be retaining my iPad @ least until I can get my hands on a Microsoft Surface which I may use as my main computing device.

They'll be hard pressed to match the N7 on specs and price I think, plus this is a Nexus device

Got to play with a Nexus 7 today!

I met a guy that works for google that has one in his possession. Its a pretty sweet device, and I can't wait to get mine! Sadly, I was unable to take pictures of it, but I got to compare it with my kindle fire, and I from just handling it, it was soo much better! Oh, btw, the nexus 7 fits inside my kindle fire case. No need to get a new one now.
The nexus is just slightly longer than the KF. HOWEVER, the screen area is just slightly smaller than the KF. I didn't have a tape measure to exactly measure the screen diagonal, but it was just millimeters smaller. BUT HOLDING IT IN MY HAND WAS SOOOOO MUCH BETTER than holding the kindle fire. Noticeably lighter. The edges don't dig into my hand. The bezels seem to be a little bit larger on top and bottom than the kindle fire as well. However, the sides seemed thinner than the KF. Sorry I did not get pictures.
The 1200 x 800 resolution is lots better than the KF as well, obviously. I tried to reproduce the screen flicker that was mentioned earlier, but I was unsuccessful. However, I don't think I turned the brightness down all the way before I loaded Chrome.
There is no native camera app, but you can take pictures with google+. I didn't post anything, but the camera turned on. I should have tried video chatting with it, but didn't think to do that.
Oh, he also showed me his galaxy nexus, and he had the backing that only google workers get. Pretty sweet.
He showed me a few more things, and also talked about working for google. I asked him how often people get fired from there, and he said one of the ways is that his nexus 7 had a number on the bezel that was unique to him, so if the images ever got out with the number on it, he could be in hot water. And he didn't want to risk his job working for google just so I could post a few pictures on here. Which was definitely understandable.
This will be a pretty sweet device!
Pretty cool! Here in the Bay Area there's a lot of people that work for Oracle, Apple, etc, but I only know of one person that works at Google. I haven't talked to the person in years though.
Did his have the white backing like the ones given out at Google I/O?
And did you notice a mini HDMI port on the bottom of the device?

This is good to hear. I want a case that's only on Kindle fire and the manufacture told me they have no plans on a Nexus 7 case as of now :-( ... but the Nexus 7 looks to be about 8mm longer, which I *think* will be okay.

Assuming they are both exactly 7" displays; the Nexus 7 has a 16:10 aspect ratio, while the Kindle Fire is 16:9. In portrait mode, the Nexus would be about ~0.16" shorter, but ~0.28" wider.
Incidentally, this means the Nexus 7 actually has a slightly larger screen area than the Kindle Fire.
And the aspect ratio is way better for the nav bar, since it means more vertical space in landscape mode.

This is the case that I got at Amazon when I purchased my KF. His Nexus 7 fit just fine inside it.

Chances are, it probably won't not have. But again, why take the risk if there is a chance?? I can't imagine that getting fired from google for a security breach would look fantastic on a resume. And because he asked me to not take or post pictures when he was doing me a favor, I didn't press the matter.
Crap, now I regret selling my KF with the DODO case, would have liked to try to fit it.

Because he probably signed an NDA about this sort of thing for proprietary inventions.

If he's a Google engineer, he could be running on an advance build with new features/apps/GoogleNow that has not yet been announced.

[Fire 7" - 5th Gen-2015] High resolution pictures of the PCB available? Flash type?
Hi,
are there any high resolution pictures of the pcb of the Fire 7 2015 available?
Is it known which type of flash is used inside the Fire 7?

Nothing that I know of...certainly nothing posted here. Google images is your friend.
There's an image named 20160201_173821.jpg on my harddisk that shows the PCB, but the only clearly labeled chips are two MTK ones. I picked it up from another XDA thread, I'm sure.

Replacing Kindle Fire 7" mainboards

Hi all,
I have had two rooted kindle fire 7" tablets for a while now for my young sons, both rooted with slim roms on. They massively prefer the stock interface to the bloat of fireos.
Anyway, one of them has broken the screen so I ordered a new one and it shipped with 5.4.0.0
So since there is no way to root or downgrade on this version would it be possible to simply switch over the new devices screen for the old? Rather than undo all the front glue to move the new screen into the old body it seems to make more sense to just put the old mainboard in the new body. But don't want to open it up and void the warranty if hardware wise they are different.
So is there any hardware change that would prevent this? Has anyone done this? Is this a stupid idea?!

There are subtle differences between 5th and 7th gen devices (connectors, button placement, etc) that will make a direct board swap difficult if not impossible. Swaps between same generations should be fine.

Which fire tablet should I choose for my mom...

Which fire tablet should I choose for my mom? Currently she uses an old version of the 7 tablet running a cyanogenmod or lineage and she doesn't want a big device like the fire 10. I rooted it before, installed the rom and gave it to her as a gift 2 or 3 years ago. Now I'm searching a device which is currently new AND rootable. And for sure I would prefer a device, which got an existing rooting guide here on xda, a good maintained alternative rom and an active community.
On Amazon germany are currently available:
Fire 8 HD, 8. gen
Fire 7, 9. gen
Fire 7, probably 8. gen
Specifications of the newer 7 and the 8 HD are better (especially for the 8 HD), but:
Are they all rootable? Is it possible without linux for one of them (because unfortunately I never used linux...)?
Which got the biggest community here?
It would be great if you could help me! Thanks in advance for your interest and reading till here!

Since you are confining alternatives to Amazon gizmos I'd go with the 8th gen HD 8. That said, you mum would probably be just as happy with a ready-out-of-the-box Onn 8" running Android 9 which will be a huge upgrade at a similar price point. Yes, is is rootable although one has to ask why. Just to be clear, it's for mum, right?

Thank you, DB126. I'd like to backup all of the data and reinstall these backups on the new tablet. The last time I did that, I used titanium backup, hence the need to root it... I'll take a look on your recommendation.

The Onn 8 has a 3500 mAH battery vs 4750 mAH in the Amazon HD 8. All else being equal the HD 8 will go 25-40% longer between charges. But all else isn't equal. Kernels and ROMs yield different efficiencies as do app portfolios. Panel brightness is usually the biggest draw on portable devices which is one reason SOT is such a meaningless measure. Battery build quality also plays a role in longevity; in that regard Amazon scores pretty well. All that said, 5h is in the ball park for an Onn 8 based on personal experience with both devices.
