In my opinion, the speakerphone option gives best clarity for me. My N920A speaker does a good job of being clear even at maximum volume. The speaker is great while playing movies (once the movie volume itself is in good quality). The speaker is clear when playing my ringtones. Great speaker all-round
I'm experiencing bad loudspeaker quality. Note 2 sounds way better (tested both with s8 notifications). N5 sounds like its volume is overloaded or equalizer is messed up but in headphones it sounds perfectly clean. Can be some hardware problems or kernel bad magic I guess. But maybe it is a normal... Willing to compare it with another n5.
My N920A gives good bass compared to my Note4 (N910T). My N920A is louder, and vocals are more clear than my N910T.
These are just MY experiences.
en mi caso, no experimento una buena calidad con el altavoz. He intentando configurarlo de otra manera pero no logro . Alquien que pueda ayudarme ? Gracias Guapos !!!

It sounds like you have a blown speaker. Did you get the device new or used?
Does your speaker sound muffled, muted, or lacking bass quality?

I absolutely love this speaker on the note 5, i think it is best speaker on a phone i have own. Its definitely better than the note 4 by far in terms of quality, yes i think the note 4 is just a bite louder which lose whatever quality is there
in loudness. I have tweak my note 5 to be as loud as the note 4 because i have manually mod the sound by going into media gain.xml,by default it was 32 and i put up to 38 and now its super loud the way i like it. I think it might be at the level as the htc one, that how good it sound to me, well to me i think so.
I agree with the comment above. My Note4 sounds louder, but my Note5 has better audio quality. I like listening to my Note5 in quiet environments where I can hear the "bass" in higher quality movies and YouTube videos. I have the N920A, so I can't root my device or do any other software modification, but I'm happy with my device as it is. If I need more, I just plug in my headphones.
purchased a galaxy note 5 a couple of years ago for my wife, and it sat in a drawer until this month, she simply refused to give up here circa 2012 galaxy s-whatever, but it finally died... anyway she loves the note 5, and can't believe she didn't switch sooner, but the speaker phone is the only prob, a real prob..
listening to callers on speaker is fine, but callers can't hear her clearly when she uses speaker, lots of crackling, drops, breaking up, etc.... if she switches off speaker and just uses the phone it sounds like she's on a land line... the phone is brand new (well, besides sitting in it's sealed box for two years), not refurbished.... we've tried to clean the mics but no help, tried to turn off hd calling per web advice but the phone doesn't seem to have this setting.
any thoughts on how she get this working? thanks!

I should warn you that modifying your audio gain to increase your volume is generally a bad idea. My device sounds like it has a bit too much gain on the top end, but that may be due to the fact my phone is used.

Hi guyz, Now am planning to buy a good over the ear headphone for my note. I have finalized the Grado SR80i. Has anybody else tried it with the note ? Or any recommendations other than this?
Have the Grado SR80i and I've been using it together with the Note for over 3 months now. Sounds great! Prior to the Note I had a Iphone 3GS and I can't hear any noticeable differences. The Grado SR80i is a great headphone.
Grado
Have used Grado SR60 since i bought Note. Sounds good. But Voodoo Louder is must have.

Why is Voodoo louder a must have?
If your hearing is really bad you might need it to max the volume.

I never listen to my Grado on max (standard) volume. When I'm at home it's nice and quiet so the volume doesn't have to be that high. When I'm on the train or the bus the volume doesn't go high either because of the open design other people will hear your headphones very clearly. And I don't want to be an A-hole so I turn the volume down a bit.

Because it makes sound not only louder, but also better. So it seems to me. Comparing with and without it is showing difference on same volume level.

Didn't thought about it that way. But maybe because it really amps your signal more it's able to drive your headphones better. Might be giving it a try, thanks matikl
sennheiser mm550
Sennheiser mm550 is a good headphone, been using it, pretty good noise cancelling, and audio is crystal clear.
if you can get poweramp, it is a good app to enjoy music, play around with the eq to hit the best possible sound
Really interested in this phone but I keep reading ONE complaint (often typed in all caps):
The audio from both the speaker AND the headphone jack are terrible. Both the fidelity and volume. It seems to be lacking in power/output, but not having had the chance to test it for myself, I can't compare it to the 10/10 Droid Maxx (Ultra) speaker quality. Just thought I'd pick a few brains and see what you guys had to say.
Thanks for your time.
Nope. I think the audio quality is pretty good. Its not as good as BOOM sound from the HTC One M8 but its still great!
The speaker volume is loud and more than any iPhone really. Plus the quality in sound from the speaker is actually pretty good, what makes it sound bad is the quality of the music you play in terms of kbps and what not. The headphone quality is not so bad but could be better for the eq is not so customizable and only has presets but still more balanced sound than the Samsung galaxy devices that tend to be bassy no matter what.
Crazy & Confused
Don't listen to these guys... the volume is absolutely horrible in every way. To hear the speaker you have to put it on max volume and move it close to your ear. if there is any noise at all... running water, talking, etc you can't hear it no matter what. Completely underpowered and garbage. Makes me hate this damn phone.
Yes, the sound is low. You can find here a volume mod to flash and fix this issue.

The audio from headphone jack is completely OK!
High on volume and clean.
On the loudspeaker, it COMPLETELY sucks.
But, almost every phone has poor loudspeaker. Only HTC's phones are good in that.
I wear hearing aids and get along OK.....without them I am lost at night to hear the alarm on my Note 4.
Does anyone have a Note 5 who can comment on the loudspeaker quality / loudness relative to a Note 4?
Thanks in advance....
I dont own a note 4, but compare to note 3, note5 is softer and sound more vocalize, try using sharp tone sound
I just received my Note 5 and did a sound comparison with my Note 4. I'm not sure I have the most discerning ear but the Note 5 notification sounded slightly louder to me than the Note 4 notification. (I made sure the sound sliders were set the same on both phones.)
It might be worth visiting a Best Buy to compare the two.
Thanks for the input
Note 5 is louder, clearer, and the speaker positioning is better. It also has a better range as well, you'll hear more highs and lows.
Just got my Note 5. Pretty good speaker and by far better than Note 4's. I hated that speaker!!
Note 4 had a loud speaker but quality of sound was raw. Note 5 has better sound quality... More finished and as loud. Plus the speaker placement helps.

yea the note 4 speaker was terrible especially once you added a case to it. although it would have been amazing to have stereo side mounted speakers now that there is some extra edge real estate from the IR blaster removal i am not disappointed by the current speaker. it is an iterative improvement. its better than i was expecting but i wasnt expecting anything other than what we got on the note 4.
note 4 speaker can be boosted to double volume through googy max kernel and googy tweaks tool or through synapse with supported kernels like halasszk kernel or through change values in mixer path ( with root explorer )
but unfortunately note 5 has no kernel support boosting volume niether code source to be changed
Listening to Spotify on my Note 5, the sound is surprisingly good, I can hear the bass and treble much better than I expected.

Immediately ran and grabbed my co-worker's 6S to test this, Lies.
Let's see if new Note 7 comes with a louder speaker.
To the OP. How deaf are you? I have to keep the phone close to me to be able to hear it. I have to use a high pitch sound. Gf Hates it... But while growing up I used the vibrations, so I tend to react from phones vibrations than the actual sound. If your the same maybe you should try that too.

You can you sound mod (Beats Audio, Viper4Android, Dolby Atmos)
I'm not sure what people are on here, but hands down the Note 4's speaker without a doubt is louder. And that's just the crappy Qualcomm one. The Exynos version is a little louder and sounds a little better.
The note 4 speaker for me was great. Especially for my favorite band. And loud as hell.
The note5 has a little more bass and sounds a little less stretched.....but for some things also lacks a lot more range, sounds a little more muffled for things beyond average range, and lost a few notches in volume....
Yet was supposedly a more powerful speaker.
It's really sad how long it took Samsung to build in speaker and how they keep going backwards.
They went from the 2009 omnia hd with what could have possibly been the best sounding stereo speakers to the quiet one in the Galaxy S1. The Note 2 one a few years later was ok. Then it was another 2 years to get to the note 4 one which especially the Exynos one rocked!
Then the note5 improved bass but lost range, got muffled, and lost volume.
Then the S7 came....i understand it's a water proof speaker but it got even worse. It's decent but could have been so much more.
And they still are stuck on single speakers

Not bad until you reach max volume. Then it becomes spiked with glitch sounds and really becomes tinny.
I was using this phone for almost 2 hours on a conference call. I had it on speakerphone the entire time, but it was so weak that I had to huddle around my phone. My previous phone, Galaxy S3, was at least twice as loud and had significantly better audio clarity.
This speakerphone sounds like it's sitting in a box of kleenex that's been submerged in honey.
Very tinny, and prone to experiencing glitches.
For me the speakers are clean and loud enough - if i want to play loud music I would just connect my phone to an external speaker.
My device sometimes stop playing sound at all, like while watching video on YouTube sound would stop coming through speaker but videos keep playing, this also found on spotify too a restart fixes the problem. Is it some sort of software glitch or my unit is faulty? I decided to take it to the cpw store but it happens randomly
I think its everything is good.
Tinny it is.
compared to nexus 5 this phone has tinny speakers. what good does speakers in front do if they sound shallow. and according to specs, nexus 5x does have a few less DB than nexus 5.

I was about 20 seconds into a call before we realized "this isn't going to work". Very low volume, poor sound quality,.
I find the speakerphone really poor on this phone.
I previously had a Samsung Galaxy S4 which had a great speaker phone - it was ideal for use in the car hands-free from the mobile phone holder.
However with the Nexus 5X I can barely hear the caller. The speakerphone just cannot handle high volume - maximum volume is not loud enough and it gets badly distorted and tinny when going over 3/4 volume (surely the only part of the speakerphone volume that anyone would use?). I also have issues that the caller cannot hear me either.
Honestly I was hoping for better. Times I want to listen to music but don't have anyway to connect to an external speaker it seems quiet. Turn it up to the max and its like the speaker can't handle the volume. I just came from a LG G Flex. Good phone but no support. However it had a rear facing speaking but it was loud and clean at max volume. Kind of feel like I went backwards with the speak build.
I expected it to be pretty bad after hearing complaints about it. It doesn't seem bad to me and I'm coming from a Moto X 2014, which has really good speakers.
Coming from an LG G2 it sounds the same - glad it's front firing.
The speaker on my 5X is much better than my last phone, an LG G2, so I'm pretty happy. Maybe some are better than others?
One thing I recently learned that, to me, is counterintuitive, but it works with both this phone and my old Samsung tablet (which, with 2 speakers, isn't really much louder than the 5X). If you put the phone on a hard surface, speaker facing down, it becomes much louder and fuller. For my tablet, with the speakers on the bottom, I keep it vertical leaning against something.
My Nexus 4 that I have given to my wife , leaves it for dead in all repects, its garbage period!
This phone - set to its loudest settings - is quiet compared to any of the last 5 phones I've had: Galaxy Note 4, Droid MAXX, Droid RAZR MAXX, Thunderbolt, even a Droid Eris.
Coming from the m8 it's an unfair comparison considering that they are in different tiers, but I find the 5x speaker to be pretty weak, not even average. But it's fine for everyday stuff.
Just don't expect to show cool songs to your friends in noisy environments.

its ok. if you are such a music-holic then you could get a small external dac and have excellent quality no matter what device you use

So far for me I find it to be OK. Coming from having Samsung Note phones, I find it to be a big improvement. It could still use work IMHO, but I find it to be much louder and just as clear than any of the past Note series speakers.
I would say that listening to music coming from the speaker, is better than average. Its no Axon 7 or HTC 10 but your average consumer will be satisfied with the volume and clarity imo.
Can you compare it to LG G5 speaker?
I am completely deaf in one ear and partially in the other ( thank you drunk driver head on hit and run ) and I love the speaker quality. I have actually had to turn down the notification volume cause it is to loud for me. So far I really like this phone and I was a Note 1, 2, 3 and 4 user. My favorite part is when it goes to "sleep" and I am going to use it I pick it up and it reads my fingerprint and TADA it is ready. I am very grateful for the second screen. Overall I am extremely pleased with this one.
The loudness and clarity is not a Gimmick, at least for mine . I usually hear music on Pandora and Spotify, and believe me, as someone who hear music daily on spotify and pandora, im experiencing something very different than other devices i have owned.
This is great to hear as I wear hearing aids and the speakers on the Note 7 and S7 Edge sucked for speaker calls....
is it better than a iphone 5s? XD like ^ mention note 7 kinda suck when i was testing music through it
Let me know

I am on Sprint so it looks like I won't have it till the end of the week but I will certainly check back in and let you know.
I was inside a AT&T store playing with the phone and was listening to Youtube. The store was packed and I could hear the speaker very clearly. It wasnt bad at all for one speaker.
Can anyone compare the speaker quality to V10? (I have V10 and sound from the build in speaker is a nightmare! Simply worse than from the worst cheap crap)

So, I have had the phone for a day now and I will say that the bottom speaker for calls, You Tube, etc for my ears ( I wear BTE hearing aids) is the best I have ever experienced in a phone and totally blows away my experience with previous Samsung notes.
The earpiece speaker is also the best I have experienced for my particular hearing loss, especially when set to the setting that gives clear sounding voices during calls.
This is exactly what I hope for every time I get a new phone and I seem to have finally found it.
For some reason I thought the V20 will come with dolby atmos or some audio enhancement software by B&O Play. I have seen the Korean version with the B&O logo on the back of the V20.
So I am guessing that the US models don't have any added audio enhancements. Correct?
My V10 audio gets a powerful boost when dolby atmos switches on. The volume level will be around 15% and its pretty loud.
On my V20, the volume has to be increase up to 50 -60% for comfortable "loudness".
Let's hope soon there will be some sort of root for the V20, so I can install the dolby atmos zip file.

I can agree with you on that. I have had the note 7 , moto x pure and Bluetooth is unnaturally clearer in my cars sound system. Have not tried it with head phones yet but I can only image the improvement.

When i pair my V20 to the Fm transmitter on the car, it sounds higher than the when i connect other smartphones. Also, for some reason, i can hear things in the song i didn't even know where there. I'm not joking. It is like it amplifies the gain on the background as well making you hear what you are missing from the song. But my bluetooth wont take the hi-fi though. Maybe is because it is not one of the new types of Fm transmitters
Still - is there any former owner of V10? Can anyone compare the speaker quality to V20?

:good: Good for you sir.
I posted about this in the V20 Q&A section, but this is the same topic so I thought I'd drop my two cents in here. The speaker on my LG G5 blows my V20's speaker out of the water and it's kind of disappointing because I love everything else about the phone over the G5 (both phones are the T-Mobile variants btw). Watching videos is fine on the V20, but music is a no-go. I could fill the room with surprisingly clear and deep sound with my G5, but the V20's speaker when it comes to music playback sounds like it's being filtered through a dense mesh
