There have been a few posts that say the call quality is bad.
GSM Arena's review states that calls are loud and clear, but the speakerphone performance is awful.

While everyone is wondering about the display and battery life (two very important qualities in a phone),
can anyone provide details about the CALL quality?
yeah yeah,.... a few weeks ago it was cool hyping the xperia z in reviews....now it seems that bashing it is the new way to go...i've even seen reviews that complain about the too edgy design of the device, and it doesn't feel as good in the hand as the s3 htc one does...
(don't get me wrong, nothing against you, but people should stay cool about all the upcoming news on how bad this and that aspect of the z is...)
Disappointed by the loudspeaker, but "loud and clear" calling is good for me. Don't use speaker really so don't care too much about that.

All they actually say is:
The built-in secondary microphone is used for active noise-cancellation, so calls are loud and clear even in noisy environments.

The way that's phrased makes me wonder if they actually tried making calls with it, or if they are simply noting the fact that it has active noise cancellation.
I've only seen one review that specifically mentions call quality, and it's fairly negative: http://www.phonearena.com/reviews/Sony-Xperia-Z-Review_id3247/page/4
call quality is fine but nothing exceptional. The earpiece is a bit weak for our taste, meaning that you may have some trouble hearing your callers when in noisy locations. Do not expect wonders from the quality – everything will sound quite high and digital. Strangely, the sound that gets transmitted through the microphone of the Xperia Z gets somewhat modulated and appears distorted on the other end of the line. Lowering the volume can help you to remedy this issue, but still, it's something we though was worth mentioning because we haven't encountered it in many other phones.

Here, I've got a 8/10.
But there is no details...
any more opinions?
Call quality (both ends of the call) is excellent, quality and volume are top-notch.
The Z has a "waterproof" main speaker and the output is quite low, so not great when used as a speakerphone. The ZL on the other hand has a freakin amazing speaker - really loud.
Proper etiquette aside (hint: don't use speakerphone while doing your "business" in a public bathroom), rate this thread to express how you think the LG Nexus 5X's speakerphone performs. A higher rating indicates that you love it: it's loud and it's clear.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Not bad until you reach max volume. Then it becomes spiked with glitch sounds and really becomes tinny.
I was using this phone for almost 2 hours on a conference call. I had it on speakerphone the entire time, but it was so weak that I had to huddle around my phone. My previous phone, Galaxy S3, was at least twice as loud and had significantly better audio clarity.
This speakerphone sounds like it's sitting in a box of kleenex that's been submerged in honey.
Very tinny, and prone to experiencing glitches.
For me the speakers are clean and loud enough - if i want to play loud music I would just connect my phone to an external speaker.
My device sometimes stop playing sound at all, like while watching video on YouTube sound would stop coming through speaker but videos keep playing, this also found on spotify too a restart fixes the problem. Is it some sort of software glitch or my unit is faulty? I decided to take it to the cpw store but it happens randomly
I think its everything is good.
Tinny it is.
compared to nexus 5 this phone has tinny speakers. what good does speakers in front do if they sound shallow. and according to specs, nexus 5x does have a few less DB than nexus 5.

I was about 20 seconds into a call before we realized "this isn't going to work". Very low volume, poor sound quality,.
I find the speakerphone really poor on this phone.
I previously had a Samsung Galaxy S4 which had a great speaker phone - it was ideal for use in the car hands-free from the mobile phone holder.
However with the Nexus 5X I can barely hear the caller. The speakerphone just cannot handle high volume - maximum volume is not loud enough and it gets badly distorted and tinny when going over 3/4 volume (surely the only part of the speakerphone volume that anyone would use?). I also have issues that the caller cannot hear me either.
Honestly I was hoping for better. Times I want to listen to music but don't have anyway to connect to an external speaker it seems quiet. Turn it up to the max and its like the speaker can't handle the volume. I just came from a LG G Flex. Good phone but no support. However it had a rear facing speaking but it was loud and clean at max volume. Kind of feel like I went backwards with the speak build.
I expected it to be pretty bad after hearing complaints about it. It doesn't seem bad to me and I'm coming from a Moto X 2014, which has really good speakers.
Coming from an LG G2 it sounds the same - glad it's front firing.
The speaker on my 5X is much better than my last phone, an LG G2, so I'm pretty happy. Maybe some are better than others?
One thing I recently learned that, to me, is counterintuitive, but it works with both this phone and my old Samsung tablet (which, with 2 speakers, isn't really much louder than the 5X). If you put the phone on a hard surface, speaker facing down, it becomes much louder and fuller. For my tablet, with the speakers on the bottom, I keep it vertical leaning against something.
My Nexus 4 that I have given to my wife , leaves it for dead in all repects, its garbage period!
This phone - set to its loudest settings - is quiet compared to any of the last 5 phones I've had: Galaxy Note 4, Droid MAXX, Droid RAZR MAXX, Thunderbolt, even a Droid Eris.
Coming from the m8 it's an unfair comparison considering that they are in different tiers, but I find the 5x speaker to be pretty weak, not even average. But it's fine for everyday stuff.
Just don't expect to show cool songs to your friends in noisy environments.

its ok. if you are such a music-holic then you could get a small external dac and have excellent quality no matter what device you use
When you call granny, does she keep saying "Huh?! Wut?!" or does the conversation flow pretty well? Rate this thread to express how you feel about the HTC 10's call quality. A higher rating indicates that calls are clear and crisp, and that regardless of background noise, you can hear the other party clearly (and with ample volume) and they can hear you.

Definitely not top notch. HTC should have included some kind of noise suppression feature like other OEMs like LG.

Mine is good. I didn't experience any issue, phone call is very clear.
Mine keeps cutting out.
Very clear for me. I bought my Dad an HTC 10 as well, so HTC 10 to HTC 10 is BEYOND amazing. Its super clear.
The best out of my all my previous phones, all samsungs. Calling my wife at work from home, I have never sounded better, she says. The speaker phone was also superb even when I was talking and playing a game, she couldn't tell I was tapping on th screen.
Could be a mix of a stronger signal I get with this phone at home. I'm always green whereas with all my other Sammy's my reception was pretty much yellow all the time, never green. Wifi calling with T-Mobile also helps.
I actually have the total opposite. My call volume is sooooo low. I constantly have to repeat or ask the other end what did you say.
I have same issue.
Same for me, the other end oftens ask me to repeat myself again.
My voice is not heard by the other side the first 3-5 seconds.
Same problem
Came from an M8 with no issues, same callers, locations. not happy
much better than iphone 5s, if a bit quiet
Superior wi-fi and cellular connectivity to most other phones
Good quality, clear and loud enoguh, but I feel it's a bit worse than my old M7. Definetly better than Samsung or iphone for that matter
I live in the middle of London so haven't had any complaints previously and this is no different. Crystal clear (on Vodafone).
Got phone few days ago and in some parts of the city when talking normally on the phone, people on the other side can't hear me, as if mic not working. I check the signal strength and it is 4 to 5 bars. I tested with and without VoLTE, no difference. Also the earpiece seems to produce tiny sound and lacks in low end. On top of that, most other external noise is present and other person hears it, as if mic isn't trying to eliminate noise.
My in call volume is pretty low too. I'm trying to find an app that will increase it without having to root.

So far for me I find it to be OK. Coming from having Samsung Note phones, I find it to be a big improvement. It could still use work IMHO, but I find it to be much louder and just as clear than any of the past Note series speakers.
I would say that listening to music coming from the speaker, is better than average. Its no Axon 7 or HTC 10 but your average consumer will be satisfied with the volume and clarity imo.
Can you compare it to LG G5 speaker?
I am completely deaf in one ear and partially in the other ( thank you drunk driver head on hit and run ) and I love the speaker quality. I have actually had to turn down the notification volume cause it is to loud for me. So far I really like this phone and I was a Note 1, 2, 3 and 4 user. My favorite part is when it goes to "sleep" and I am going to use it I pick it up and it reads my fingerprint and TADA it is ready. I am very grateful for the second screen. Overall I am extremely pleased with this one.
The loudness and clarity is not a Gimmick, at least for mine . I usually hear music on Pandora and Spotify, and believe me, as someone who hear music daily on spotify and pandora, im experiencing something very different than other devices i have owned.
This is great to hear as I wear hearing aids and the speakers on the Note 7 and S7 Edge sucked for speaker calls....
is it better than a iphone 5s? XD like ^ mention note 7 kinda suck when i was testing music through it
Let me know

I am on Sprint so it looks like I won't have it till the end of the week but I will certainly check back in and let you know.
I was inside a AT&T store playing with the phone and was listening to Youtube. The store was packed and I could hear the speaker very clearly. It wasnt bad at all for one speaker.
Can anyone compare the speaker quality to V10? (I have V10 and sound from the build in speaker is a nightmare! Simply worse than from the worst cheap crap)

So, I have had the phone for a day now and I will say that the bottom speaker for calls, You Tube, etc for my ears ( I wear BTE hearing aids) is the best I have ever experienced in a phone and totally blows away my experience with previous Samsung notes.
The earpiece speaker is also the best I have experienced for my particular hearing loss, especially when set to the setting that gives clear sounding voices during calls.
This is exactly what I hope for every time I get a new phone and I seem to have finally found it.
For some reason I thought the V20 will come with dolby atmos or some audio enhancement software by B&O Play. I have seen the Korean version with the B&O logo on the back of the V20.
So I am guessing that the US models don't have any added audio enhancements. Correct?
My V10 audio gets a powerful boost when dolby atmos switches on. The volume level will be around 15% and its pretty loud.
On my V20, the volume has to be increase up to 50 -60% for comfortable "loudness".
Let's hope soon there will be some sort of root for the V20, so I can install the dolby atmos zip file.

I can agree with you on that. I have had the note 7 , moto x pure and Bluetooth is unnaturally clearer in my cars sound system. Have not tried it with head phones yet but I can only image the improvement.

When i pair my V20 to the Fm transmitter on the car, it sounds higher than the when i connect other smartphones. Also, for some reason, i can hear things in the song i didn't even know where there. I'm not joking. It is like it amplifies the gain on the background as well making you hear what you are missing from the song. But my bluetooth wont take the hi-fi though. Maybe is because it is not one of the new types of Fm transmitters
Still - is there any former owner of V10? Can anyone compare the speaker quality to V20?

I can tell you from having the V10 to v20 the speaker is lot better, and its way better than than the S7 edge and the Note 7 I had, louder and crisper.:good:

:good: Good for you sir.
I posted about this in the V20 Q&A section, but this is the same topic so I thought I'd drop my two cents in here. The speaker on my LG G5 blows my V20's speaker out of the water and it's kind of disappointing because I love everything else about the phone over the G5 (both phones are the T-Mobile variants btw). Watching videos is fine on the V20, but music is a no-go. I could fill the room with surprisingly clear and deep sound with my G5, but the V20's speaker when it comes to music playback sounds like it's being filtered through a dense mesh

Network is a factor. But the device itself too.
Coming from Huawei mate 9 with a crystal clear (best i ever heard) sound while having a call, I am disappointed by the oneplus 5t. The sound is somewhat stub imo. The person I talk to says my voice sounds stub too.

I'm coming from a Nexus 5X and have to say the call quality is quite an improvement compared to that. But - I'm still somewhat disappointed in it since it isn't really that clear. It's okay, but nothing to boast about.
It's not really that great in my opinion.
for me its pretty clear, i never faced any issue with call quality
TMobile VOLTE superb
Not great same lg g6

clarity is better when compared to OPO, but the earpiece isn't as loud - even at full volume its very quiet
Just got my 5T yesterday and I'll say that it is just ok. I came from a V20 and it was way better than the 5T.

I'm coming from a Nexus 5x as well. I am felling that it really hard for me to hear and the volume is too low.
Running OmniROM 8.1, my call quality is crystal over wifi, using either a bluetooth headset or the phone itself. But that's wifi. Kind of a cheat.
My call quality is crystal clear on Nexus 6 & iPhone 6plus but on OP5t call quality is poor and volume is low.
For me it got better with Oreo.

Same here, not having any issues and I have been using it for nearly a month .
Coming from Samsung S6 edge and then iphone se, call wuality via earpiece is sub par. Very very feeble sound even on volte. Not impressed
