New dual band router wakelock/fix - Xperia Z3 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi folks,
Thought I'd post this in case anyone else has the same issue...
I've been running Slimm 3.8 for quite a while now (I'd love to try some others but cant unlock the bootloader), all had been well until I received my dual band BT smart hub. All of a sudden I was losing 40% battery overnight, I was puzzled, why would a new router be causing such a bad wakelock? In fact how the hell would any router be affecting my phone!
Well it seems as though when my router is set to broadcast the 2.4 and 5Ghz on the same network my phone cant decide what is going on and stays awake most of the time. If I split the channels and connect to either 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz the wakelock goes
If anyone has an explanation why, I'd love to hear it
Now just to sort out the suspend_backoff and PowermanagerService.Display weirdness!
:good:

WiFi issues on stock

I have issues on Wi-Fi with my one where with my Samsung glide no problems . I have a Belkin router wireless N and it normally works fine but with the one I get occasional drops and reconnects. Anyone else have this issue. I am on stock rogers. My Wi-Fi has security enabled as well.

Did you turn on Power Saver and Sleep Mode? Click the Power Saver mode in the Power menu in Settings. You can select what Power Saver controls. Untick Data Connection, and if you want, turn off Sleep Mode as well.
I have noticed some issued. I have the developer edition and upgraded from a nexus 4. There seems to be issues with the One releasing wifi and reconnecting to data or vice versa.
In some cases, i know i am clearly out of range for a wifi network, such as the top floor of my office, yet it picks it up and connects without data since i assume i am out of range. For now i just manually control it as its pretty rare, but fir sure not something i have ever experienced before.

Agreed this is what I am seeing.I have disabled power saving and the other option to turn off data when sleeping and yet periodically the wifi just drops as I am viewing some wifi video streaming. It is weird I switch off the WiFi and use data and all is fine. I do not know if it is an incompatibility with my router. That's why I posted here to see if anyone else is seeing similar issues.
Also is there a way to set a manual Ip? was wondering if that may help as have heard issues of other phones having issues with DHCP via wifi.

I ordered a new AC router and will see if that works better and if I still get wifi drops. I am hoping it is my old cheap router giving me issues.

Well I got the ASUS RT-AC66U and now the Wireless 2.4GHZ works great but the phone will not connect at 5Ghz, so much for AC that only operates at that frequency. I heard other people are having this issue as well from my searches on this forum and the web. Kind of sucks that my router has the latest firmware and still has this issue with this phone. I did notice that there was a beta firmware on Asus's site but I am iffy on trying a Beta Firmware on my Router when all other devices are working great and so is the phone on the 2.4ghz. Great range with this router as well. Sucks that I can not use the 5Gz on the phone though. Tried on 2 other Devices that support 5Gz and it is working great on them. I gave 2 different names for the 2.4Ghz and the 5Ghz to tell them apart, but no go on this phone.

here's my take on the whole wifi thing with htc one. either the wifi chip is too picky or it's too new for the older routers. i couldn't get a wifi to stay connected using my old D-Link DIR-655 router from years ago. All other devices had no problems except this phone so that's a bummer. I then picked up the Asus RT-AC66U and immediately flashed the latest beta firmware. Performance and range is flawless on the 2.4GHz band for this router. 5GHz works as well if i'm close but it just doesn't have the range of the 2.4GHz for this phone so I've been sticking with 2.4GHz.
I actually wanted the just announced RT-AC68U but couldn't wait any longer as there's no eta on the release for it.

I used to have a Belkin Wifi-N router cost me about 40$ on sale and it used to work with my old Samsung but could not connect and stay connected on my One (Single was not to strong on top floor of house as well). It kept dropping WIFI after a few minutes on One and was really annoying. The RT-AC66U works great at the 2.4Ghz and I am tempted to try the Beta Firmware that you are using but I hear it slightly drops the range on the 2.4Ghz and all my other devices (WD-TVlive) are working great streaming 1080P from 3 floors up (Routers in Basement). Question for you, since you flashed the Beta firmware and can connect at 5Ghz are you hitting the 400Mb speed when you connect at close range. If you click on your connected network on phone it shows you the connection speed.

unfortunately with the beta firmware on 5GHz band, the fastest i am able to connect with this phone is around 87Mbps and it still feels slow compared to 2.4GHz. mind you this is me checking the speed by standing right next to the router with my phone. on 2.4GHz the fastest speed i can get is 72Mbps but the range is great. i hope asus is able to release newer firmware that will help increase the speed and range of this router at 5GHz but it's probably not possible. i still think it's the AC chipset/driver in this phone that's preventing the wireless from achieving maximum speed. in comparison, my dell latitude notebook is able to connect at 450Mbps at 5GHz with on wireless N. THat's with the intel wifi chipset which has always been imo the best in compatibility and performance. i look forward to the day when i can rock a smartphone with intel all in one chipset.
I am also connected at 72mb and at 2.4ghz it connects great. I am going to leave it like this. I find the range on the Asus router is amazing. It sure beats all other routers.

moto x pure att WIFI kills data signal

Issue: While connected to my EA6900 (1900 AC) linksys wireless modem my data dies. If I turn off wifi, I am able to call out, (although patchy), get texts, and use android services. As soon as I turn on wifi, these services all seem to shut down. Although sometimes some data is able to eak through.
Background: I am using a Moto x (2014) Pure Edition on the AT&T Network. I have confirmed time and time again that wireless works on my network, I have a full wifi signal and decent LTE signal (unsure how strong -- it shows 2-3 bars). I had this problem initially in 4.4.4 and it persists in 5.0 (I updated to see if that would fix the issue. Previously I had and HTC One with no issues what so ever. Reboots do not fix this issue and ATT has told me it is not their problem.
Hypothesis: I think the Moto X 2014 has problem connecting on the 5ghz (duel band) or AC networks. I have noticed while at work or other locations, I have had no connectivity issues with wifi on. I am pretty sure they are using standard 2.4ghz G and or N connections. I believe that the phone is unable to switch between the range of bands and causes it to lose data connectivity.
Has anyone had this issue or can anyone correct it?
I don't have an ac or 5ghz router so I can't test this. Have you played with the WiFi frequency band under advanced WiFi? You can force connect to 5ghz or 2.4ghz.
You could also turn off ac on the router configuration page to see if you can connect on n.
When I have time I will play around on my network to try and force the connection to different protocols. I have an AC router from EnGenius it's their ESR1200 which is a consumer grade device but pretty nice over all and was a steal at $60 over on Amazon:
http://www.engeniustech.com/home-networking/routers/16742-esr1200
But will try a few options. Right now I have it connected to the 5ghz band w/o issue. I can add I have long encountered issues for Android when moving between wifi networks. It has always been prone to struggling to juggle connections, even when switching nodes on a mono-SSID network. I can trace my issues back to Jelly Bean. But it seems like you are seeing something different.
If I find anything I'll post it soon as time permits, busy week for me at work or I might get lucky and just die in my sleep.
EDIT: For giggles I forced a connection to the 5ghz side and sent some texts as well as a couple calls w/o issue. Was able to receive as well. Mode is .11n of course and a solid 433mbps network connection speed
This is where my hypothesis really dies... I have attempted forcing 2.4 or 5ghz but both failed. The other option is the phone doesnt play nice with the EA6900... which is seemingly supported by the fact that my phone hasnt had any issues while i am connected to my parents house for thankgsiving. They are running 2.4ghz at a blazing 65mbps (i usually average around 400 at my house on my ea6900). Could it be the AC modem? One other thought is chromecast is somehow interfering with my phone. I will need to try removing chromecast when i get home to see if that works, but at this point, i would find it hard to imagine.
This is literally driving me up a wall.
EDIT: So I am at home at it has been running better but just now it has decided to seize up. Showing same info... 2.4ghz 65mpbs same network... full bars.... att shows 3/5 bars but doesnt say LTE or H or anything..just ATT (pretty sure thats normal)

There are a bunch of comments about it overheating and dropping signal repeatedly. I would think about returning it under warranty.

[Solved] Tethering to FTVStick question

I've been having a problem tethering my phone to my FireTV stick. It connects fine, and has a good signal, but the speed is erratic and maxes out around 100Kb/s. Does anyone have a FTV that they've been able to tether to with no problems? It connects fine, and goes full speed on my home wifi.
There's no 2.4ghz congestion here, so it's not that, but I'm thinking maybe it's the actual 2.4ghz band the phone is broadcasting. The M preview lets you select 5ghz, and I'm wondering if that would fix it. I just don't really want to use M and lose xposed.
Chromecast gets full speed when tethered, so I know the AP is working.
Just curious if anyone has had this issue, or has any ideas. TIA
(FTV forums/amazon/etc. have been unhelpful.)
Just wanted to update. I eventually got my Nexus 6 to multiboot with Android M preview, and tried it. With regular 2.4ghz I get the same issue, but when I switched to the 5ghz band, it worked perfectly.
I have no interference on any bands here, or anything that would cause it outside of the phone. So it's something to do with 2.4ghz, or the N6 specifically.
Just glad I got it working.

WiFi speeds slow when Bluetooth is on !!

I know this has been discussed with other devices, but I have yet to see a solution, so I'll post here and am willing to try anything to resolve this issue.
I have tried all I could think of, clearing cache out, checking for conflicting devices, tried uninstalling some apps I think my be the culprit, rebooting the device, the router, and the Modem etc..... The problem still occurs, I'm not sure if this started since the 5.1 update or prior, all I can say I only noticed it a few days ago, when I decided to do a Speedtest, I know I have done Speedtest before, and never noticed this issue.
Once I'm connected to WiFi and my Bluetooth is turned on, my WiFi speeds are slow and bounce from 2Mb's to 5 Mb's, and when I say bounces the speeds go up and down during the process. As soon as I turn Bluetooth off the speeds are back above the 30 Mb's.
I have tried many of the recommendations around, but have yet to find a solution, Is it a LP issue ?? any other device I have connected I have no issues, I even have a back up Huawei, on LP, and have no issues when BT is turned on. Heck, even my wife's 1st Gen Moto X has no issues. Since I only realized this recently, today when I get to work I will try it when I get to work and see if it does the same on WiFi there when BT is turned on.
Any suggestions would be great.

Yes, same result.
Well I can tell you it's either a rogue app, causing it, or LP 5.1, It did the same at work today, so I know it's not the router issue
Change your router channel to something manual, lock it to one frequency. You can check a less congested channel with "WiFi analyzer" by "farproc"
It's the best one I know at least.
Both WiFi and Bluetooth do channel hopping, I've had this happen a lot at work where there's a ton of wireless devices nearby.
My bluetooth mouse will start to lag on my laptop and things like that, I guess both devices are attempting to hop channels and end up doing it at the same time, to the same band over and over causing this issue.
Wifi will grind to a halt on any devices connected to your router because wifi isn't really designed to switch channels often.
If you can upgrade to 5Ghz that will definitely solve your problem, but you have to go with a high end router that has some proper TX output at 5G.

I can switch to5GHZ, but from what I recall the range drops if I do so, also can BT be assigned a channel also, I guess this would help resolve the issue if this is the cause ?? If BT still hops, it will simply be a matter of time when it hops on the channel my router is set to ??

Issues with wife's Turbo

My wife and I both have the Turbo on VZW (joint plan, etc). I generally perform any mods on my phone first, before doing the same to hers, so that I know what issues will happen and I can make sure the phone doesn't work any differently for her daily usage. So, aside from apps, we have the same phone in theory. Both phones are stock SU4TL-44, rooted, BL-unlocked (via Sunshine) states.
My wife's has been having rather poor battery life for the past many months. I can get a good 3.5+ hours of screen-on-time on my phone (as reported by GSam) but hers only gets like 1.5 hours on a good day. Her phone radio is what's reported as the largest load, so I started trying things there. We were both on the .49 radio (using the TWRP download by firstEncounter), so I thought maybe her phone doesn't like that radio, and put her back to the .44 radio. (Note, I have checked the hashes on these files, and they match. I also have used the same-exact files on both phones (via dropbox)... so it shouldn't be a radio/corruption issue.) Both
I'm not sure if the battery life has improved or not (only been a few days, but checking just now it looks like her max is now 2.5 hours in GSam, so that's a start I guess) but now another problem has come up - her phone keeps dropping the internet connection. Wifi appears to remain connected, but it shows an "!" which means it has lost internet connectivity. Checking the browser confirms that it is really lost for internet sites. (Next time, I plan to try going to the router IP and seeing if I can get to that, at least...) This drop happens sporadically, and doesn't self-repair... it is only fixed by disabling and then re-enabling Wifi. I "forgot" the wifi (2.4GHz, by the way), re-connected, and re-entered the password... this doesn't seem to fix the dropout either.
The wifi, itself, is working well. My Turbo has none of these issues, my work phone (Turbo2) doesn't appear to have issues, nor do our 2 laptops or wifi-Tivo... every other device works fine, just her phone has been giving issues.
Needless to say, the priority is to fix the dropping internet connectivity... if anyone can help me troubleshoot this further, I would appreciate it.
Longer term, I'd like to figure out the battery issues (health is reported as "good" by various battery apps... is there a way to see what the "real" capacity is, and not just "good/bad"?)... but the wifi is the primary issue. Part of me thinks of doing a factory reset (or maybe flashing SU4TL-49 and then re-rooting)... but I fear this may not fix anything.
Any help/ideas are appreciated. Thank you!
EDIT: One more difference - she has a Tile Gen2 along with the associated app. The app requires Bluetooth to be on, as it does some polling, I expect. I have turned this off for now (further testing) to see if it helps. She's had the Tile for a while, so it's not a new change... but I'm running out of ideas. Battery usage isn't significant, based on what's reported... but I thought maybe it has some effect on the wifi... I simply don't know, so I'm trying anything!
A little more info. I have left her bluetooth off for the past day, thinking that maybe Tile was the problem... it certainly seems to have helped the battery life (weird, since all the battery tools I've used don't seem to identify the app or BT as a large battery sink?)
Things were great for about 24 hours, but now the dreaded exclamation point is back. I tried getting to the router, but I get "ERR_ADDRESS_UNREACHABLE" from Chrome. Weird since I'm giving it an actual IP address (so no DNS should be involved). Phone has a valid IP address (same one it's had for a while now) and claims to have the interface "up" as well.
Any ideas, anyone?
EDIT: I see some UPNP activity in my router... I wonder if that has something to do with it. As a test, I have disabled UPNP to see if that helps (and what it breaks... which shouldn't be much, as I try to keep things explicitly configured)....
A further update in case others run into problems like this.... the issue may be caused by an interaction between my router and the bluetooth Tile app (which isn't on my phone but uses BT relatively often) - note that BT runs on the same 2.4GHz frequency as her wifi. I chose 2.4Ghz wifi (instead of 5Ghz) on her phone because it helps extend the range. Turning off BT on her phone seems to keep the connection stable and without issue... I have a little more testing to do to ensure it's the root cause before I consider it found.
There are a few potential solutions. One is to update the firmware on the router to a newer one which has an option to enable BT coexistence mode (disables some features in 2.4GHz wifi to improve compatibility). Another is to move her to 5GHz. I plan to test the coexistence mode, just to prove it's the problem... but my final solution will likely be to move her to 5GHz as the coexistence mode may reduce performance on 2.4GHz.

What about changing Wi-Fi channels on the router?
I also disable 5GHz on both our Quarks because the 5GHz range is shorter. I set our phones to ONLY connect to 2.4GHz and that's what I use for Wi-Fi router too (even routers with dual bands, I disable the 5GHz band).
But you can change 2.4GHz Wi-Fi router channels to mitigate interference, right?
http://www.goldtouch.com/stop-bluetooth-interference-messing-devices/
How to Stop Bluetooth Interference From Messing With Your Other Devices
Change Router Channel: If you have an Apple router and you’re constantly getting interference with your WiFi, try rebooting it. Upon restart, the station will search for a new channel — specifically, a different channel than the one your Bluetooth devices are using to communicate. If you don’t have an Apple router, you may need to instead go into your router settings and try changing the channel manually. Experiment with different channels to see which one works best.

I don't use anything Apple -- I just quoted from that article because it suggested what I was suggesting, changing Wi-Fi channels...
Yeah, I kept testing and found that the BT wasn't the only issue (may have been part of it, but it still dropped internet after a day or two even when BT was off).
Like you said, it's probably a 2.4GHz interference issue... and since I'm in an apartment building the spectrum is rather crowded. Plus, if anyone else bought a new phone/monitor/microwave/router that could be causing the issue, too. Bottom line, there's too much out of my control, so I switched her back onto 5GHz and the problem seems to have gone away (at least for the past few days)... so I'll leave it at that. I can't solve the entire area's problem, after all!
I am on the "cleanest" channel I can find, but that's only based on seeing other routers (via Wifi Analyzer)... interference won't be "seen" there, so we can only guess on those issues.
Bottom line, switching her phone to 5GHz is good enough for now, and solves the issue. I'll flip her phone back to the 49 radio as well.
In fact, this might have also helped her battery issue - when the phone lost internet, it would sit there and suck down power for "phone radio" doing who-knows-what. I don't see why it should do that, but it really killed the battery on one of the days. Putting her on 5Ghz prevents the loss of internet, and the battery drain from that, too... so that's better. Still, she gets much less SOT than I do on my phone, and she uses it less than I do... maybe the battery just needs to be replaced after all.
I wish there was a way to see what the "real capacity" is of the battery, instead of just assuming that 100% = original capacity (which we know it won't be). Do you know of a way to get that info?
