Hi all
I am sad to say but I am at my 3rd S4A now, first one had a faulty button and got replaced on obf, second one had a screen backlight problem where the screen would start dim/flicker as if its not getting enough power, and then lastly the 3rd one had exactly the same issue when adjusted to low brightness levels and its got a pinkish shade on the top part of the screen.
I anyone has any of these issues or knows if and how it can be fixed by firmware perhaps, please comment! I am thinking of just getting a normal S4 although I need a water/dust resistant phone.
Kind regards
Neil

get a 4th and test it right there and then in the shop.
mine does not have your mentioned issues.
I wouldn't use that store any more, sounds unbelievable that 3 stock phones would have such severe problems. Perhaps they are recycling customer returns? If you keep returning them, eventually you'll get the first one back again! Or perhaps you are in a particularly extreme climate of some sort? The screen issues I guess could be related to power, do you have brownouts and powergrid issue where you are? Is the battery in the phone the stock battery?
I don't think changing the phone model would make any difference here, since the S4A doesn't from what has been seen have any higher number of faulty units than the S4 - whatever reason you keep getting these faulty units is likely to just happen again.
On the other hand getting an S4 doesn't mean giving up your water/dust resistant phone - just get an otterbox to go with it!
Thanks for the feedback, I joined xda yesterday and I am loving it already!
@Cederic
Climate conditions are quite normal where I live and its with the stock battery, my feeling too is that it might be power or power management related, not sure if it might be a bug with the vodacom firmware they load and if it can be fixed with software?
The thing is just I dont see going through all of this trouble just to fix something new, and the otterbox defender looks quite niffty for the S4! Choices choices...
I got my Active from AT&T and haven't had any issues with it. I know some people have had issues with the waterproofness, but my mother works as a QA for Samsung and they're now testing that as part of their process so it shouldn't be an issue anymore. At least here in DFW where I live...
To give some back round I first bought the Galaxy S6 Edge 128 gb Black Sapphire from ATT direct.
As you can see from my posts no matter what I did I could not get the batter life under control.
Another thing was the screen had a pink cast (the whole screen). I returned the phone back to ATT.
I then continued to read these forums as saw that there was a good majority of people getting
very good battery life. I decided to give the SGS6 another shot but this time I bought the
regular version NOT the Edge. Ordered from the same source ATT online. 128 GB Black Sapphire but the regular version.
Received phone and I can say that there is a night and day difference. First off the screen is perfect.
NO pink cast or banding. Now this phone was set up exactly like the one I returned. Both phones had the
latest Google Services in case you were wondering. The battery life on this phone is amazing! I could
not be happier.
I have to think that there are some phones out there that are defective. I cannot believe the difference
from this phone to the Edge version. I do not think its an Edge problem as just phone by phone basis
but it would be interesting to see if the majority complaints on battery life are from Edge users?
All in all I can say this phone is absolutely amazing, I love it. Thanks to all the posters who made me see the light
and give the S6 another chance.

I had a similar situation. First bought an S6 Edge 32GB from AT&T. Used it for a week...battery life was horrible even after doing the things recommended on XDA to improve it. Phone was very sluggish, apps crashed a lot...and my palm would accidentally touch the edge screen sometimes, which irritated me so I exchanged it for a non-Edge 32GB from AT&T.
COMPLETELY different phone, it's nice and fast, no lag...I get at least 4x the battery life out of this one as I did the Edge. It surprised me, actually. So yes, I'm pretty sure there ARE defective ones out there.

As a side note my new unit is made in Korea. That may also be a factor. I really believe the Korean made
units are better quality. My screen is flawless, the Edge I returned was pink as hell.

Don't get me wrong but I thought they were all made in Korea since Samsung is a Korean company could be wrong.
There are definantly more regular S6 that had the Pink screen problem than edge variants. But mostly it seems the S6s in general that came out of Vietnam were problematic to say the least and the US got alot of those expecially poor T-mobile. and speaking I have a Gold s6 Edge and its flawless, I get about days use out of it and achieve somewhere around 3-4 hours playing video games on it off charger. The only problem that really been edge exclusive is the Fast charging Frying the Oriantation sensors. but even then I really wouldn't use the fast charger out of absolutely needing it like on the move or at work where your not gonna leave it on the charger... ie use a slow charger to charge it up when you sleep. < you'll be doing the longevity of your battery a favor.

I got the 128GB S6 (white) for AT&T via Best Buy -- seems to have been manufactured in Korea. No screen issues -- battery life is OK (could be better it feels like) -- I'd concur that I generally get about 1 day worth of use out of it. This seems like one of those things that generally get improved after a couple of firmware releases -- though, I could be wrong, time will tell. So far -- after about 2-3 weeks of use -- it's showing about 14 hours of (estimated) life, on average.
Of course -- once power save mode kicks in and those cores cut off, general responsiveness / app switching seems to take a significant hit.
I bought two from AT&T yesterday. Both had perfect screens and buttons. No issues whatsoever so I guess I was lucky. Both units were made in Korea as well.

I am very confident to say the Korean made phones are the best for screen quality and overall
build. Its just the luck of the draw what phone you receive. Allot of Vietnamese phones
are having problems.......

True that. My At&t one is korean made and is perfect beside Att bloatware Tried and returned two 920i from eBay both made in vietnam and both having problems and poorly made. First one had his front camera not exactly in the middle of the opening and also after restart screen was with really dark colors until you hit the power button and then its fine. The second one had issue with its home button making clicking noises without really pressing it, but just touching it (really annoying).
I have a Korean made black 128gb model purchased from ATT online. Screen is beautiful. Battery life is about what I expected - typically get around 16 hours off charger with 3 hours screen on and some phone calls.

Silly question. How do you guys know point of origin? Im sure somewhere on the box it says, however if I did a warranty claim and they sent the phone only is there something in the model number or about phone list that would indicate?
So I really have no idea why Samsung decide to remove things we all like. Both the Note 5 and S6 Edge don't have one. Strange. If anyone is interested there's a first unboxing of the Edge Plus on YouTube already so pretty much same deal as Note 5 https://youtu.be/t99B6IPATCg

maybe cause we don't need it anymore!
But probably it will available in selected markets like external sd card
:good:
Samsung wants you to buy a new TV with control over IP. IR is so outdated
they rushed it
If I could get the note5 here in Europe, this is the single most nagging issue for me, I use that IR blaster a lot and couldn't justify upgrading from an s6 which does have to a note5 without one

Yeah I use it as well so seems like a stupid thing to just leave out
I also wish it had OR Blaster but it isn't a deal breaker for me. I never set it up on my S6 Edge and I always have my Tab S by the TV anyways so I'm okay with it
Sent from my SM-G925V using Tapatalk
They probably collected usage statistics on the app and just not enough people used it to warrant using up the extra capacity in the phone for the necessary components to make it run an IR Blaster. Phones keep getting thinner, fitting components is getting harder. They're going to omit things at this point that they don't feel their consumer base is using, most likely.
I think they saved a bunch of money by using the new processor but it may be incompatible with the features we miss.
Either that or they're stup1d.

I don't know but I heard something about the processor and comparability with roms and the external sd Card
They got rid of the IR blaster because Samsung doesn't care at all about their customers. Samsung is trying to make as much money as possible, period. Any feature that Samsung thinks they can take away that will not cause the vast majority of people to not but the phone will be taken away. That is why the IR blaster is not there. It really is that simple. They took it away because they figured that while people would upset, the vast majority of those people would still buy the phone so it there is no reason for them to spend the money to put in.

You're right, that's it. A multi-billion dollar company meets bi-weekly, finds out what the top features are, and spends millions of dollars to remove them.
Geesh
i have an old sony system that i lost the remote, with my htc m8 is the only way i can control it without getting up from bed to turn off before sleep, and after that i added my tv and ar conditioner to the app, averything controlled in my phone. for me is a major drawback, i would not even care about not having front facing speakers but IR for me is mandatory.
most hotels tv remote won't let you switch input mode. with my regular s6 edge, I can switch input to HDMI and stream porn to the TV !
Samsung got it wrong this time around by removing IR, Samsung are self centered they do not care abt their customers. We all see what happened to Nokia and what blackberry is facing. Now, I think it Samsung turn In life u can't be a champion for ever the fall of Samsung jst begin if care is not taking. Nothing so special abt note 5.

and nothing so special about Edge+. i have regular galaxy s6 edge, the edge screen is useless, it doesnt do much ! it' a waste of money. Atleast the edge screen on NoteEdge is usefull, it can display Main and Edge screen at the same time. on galaxy s6 and s6 edge+, you CANT !

You're right. To me RIP to Samsung. They are gradually making ways for other competitors.
I believe the real reason they removed IR blaster to save money and make more profits. They probably have to pay licencing fee to use IR.
Everyone is different. The device dropped several hundred dollars in price.... Hmmm, not seeing too many threads about that little detail.... and I for one have never used the IR Blaster on a single device I have owned, and I am pretty sure most of them have it. So I say good riddance. I don't remember the details, but somewhat recently, a manufacturer stopped putting NFC chips into their devices because no one was using them.
Of course they added wireless charging, both standards, so maybe more people will use the wireless charging than the IR blaster.
Hey folks ,
So i got this phone in around november 2012 soon after it came out. It has been almost 4 goddamn years. During that time it has endured countless of abuses. I first dropped it in a toilet , which had just been used and not flushed. I fished it out and cleaned it thoroughly. It was still erratic , touchscreen did weird things and stuff. I opened it up and realized the board is completely wet and it had run like that for an entire day. I cleaned the board and let it sit through the night , the next day it worked without a hiccup. Then after a while i dropped it and broke the screen. I then replaced the screen with a new one i ordered off ebay. Then GPS didn't work for the longest time. Then i solved that problem which was caused by the digitizer interference. I documented it and shared it with you folks and many people fixed their gps problems with that. After a while i dropped it again and had to replace it again , but this time i knew what the problem was so i wrapped the digitizer with aluminium foil. It did not work. Turns out the new issue was grounding (which had already been pointed out in my thread by helpful folks over there) and my new assembly didn't come with grounding contacts so i had to make those. I made them out of laptop grounding sponges which are soft and conductive. It worked again. After a while the battery's voltage started to drop randomly causing all kinds of weird touchscreen behaviour and random reboots. I used it like that for like a year. I started developing kernels with the help of wonderful folks here who wrote really really useful guides. I didn't publish anything because this is a Nexus and people who are way better than me are developing for it in a capacity that i , at this current state , cannot match. Yet.
So today , i'm finally retiring my old mako. This is a very sentimental phone for me. It has seen me being wed , it has been there at the birth of my child , it's been there when my wife almost died and when i almost fell from a cliff. It's been the great partner in my many ways. So yea , i'll be hoarding the carcass , probably be showing that to my kids one day. I learned a lot from you folks and tried to give back in every little way possible. It's been a good , long ride. Thank you folks for everything.
Cheers!
May I ask why you chose the S7 Edge? IIRC it does not have an unlockable bootloader...
Wow, I was about to post something similar (a goodbye note of sorts) but if you don't mind I will just post it here instead of creating new thread.
Nexus 4 has been my daily driver since launch. I enjoyed the official run up to lollipop and now MarshMallow. (screen replaced 3 times, and usb port replaced 2. Every time it was my mistake)
My story is a bit different, I went with Honor 5x, a filler device, as I needed dual sim functionality until September. I am actually planning on getting the G5 then.
I will miss this phone and for now I am not sure I can let go of N4 completely because I still haven't used the honor 5x (it was shipped to my house today and I am at work). If I get a slight bad vibe from the Honor, I will be back to N4 in no time.
Sooner or later we had to part ways but I have to give it to LG for building this solid piece of device. In my books, the N4 will go down as one of the best Nexus device built to date (sorry 5x,6p,6 and 5).
I hope you enjoy your S7 Edge.

One of the reasons i went with a Samsung device is , Samsung is the only manufacturer that actually does something about storage technology. Their flash chips are faster than anybody else , only rivaled by that of the iPhone which is also a samsung chip It's rarely mentioned in the reviews and largely ignored yet it is very important for a sleek UI experience. Also the fact that Exynos 8890 is a beast. The device performs without a damn hiccup. Impressive hardware. Btw , i got the international version. So , it's exynos for me. I'm already rooted
Touch Latency , Audio Latency and many more variables which are never mentioned in the reviews , those are very important. Samsung is one of the best in terms of those , again only rivaled by Apple. I'm actually thinking about writing an article about those features that nobody mentions. So that people pay more attention.
I'm using my HTC One M7 until it dies, but once in a while I'll charge up my Nexus 4 and use it for a day or two. It's still my favorite phone, I'm kind of wanting to simply save it and keep it in good condition while riding out my M7. It's a freaking fantastic phone. Perfect screen and in-hand size for my tastes, build quality can be a smidgen creaky once in a blue moon but otherwise really great. I'm always going to hold onto it even if I upgrade in the future as a backup, and like I mentioned it's my favorite phone, always has been and will be for quite some time yet. It's almost in flawless condition other than some small scratches on the back. Friend gave it to me for free after getting a OnePlus One, he bricked the hell out of it but I fixed it in about 2 hours and he said "Just keep it man, I have no use for it" xD
Cudos to you, you've really MacGyver'd that phone!
Hey guys, so I've just recently gotten a Note 5 (W8) for pretty cheap. At first, the lack of expandable memory was really hard to handle, because I'm used to backing up everything daily. However, I've come to like the phone, because I really missed Samsung and all it's awesome features.
I purchased the phone with the caveat that it didn't respond to touch, and I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived and I saw that only a small portion of the screen was affected. Basically from a little above the dock area and below. The home, back, and recent buttons aren't affected, and I'm able to use the S-Pen on the area that doesn't respond to touches.
Before I bought the phone, I read online that the issue may be related to a bad digitizer or maybe the touch software just needed to be updated through the dialer. Well, I've completed the touch update several times and the issue still persists, so now I'm at the point where I think that this might be hardware related and I just wanted to get some opinions and expertise from you guys.

I wish mine was like that, it's perfect except for that one issue. At first, I was going to attempt opening the phone and swapping out the digitizer, but after watching a few videos on the dismantle, I've decided I'm not brave enough for that. It's on the same level as opening up an S8 or a Note 8. I miss the days of the removable battery.
