who else thinks the Note 8 is boxy and ugly - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

So i went to look again at one at Best Buy. I decided that it's really rather unattractive looking, especially compared to my s8+, the upcoming v30, the upcoming mate 10, and even the iPhone 8. It's gotten too big and unweildy and it really is boxy looking. And the back camera module also looks ugly. Every other manufacturer is going smaller except Samsung.

I'm transitioning from the Note 3, so I'm gonna like it...

no you won't. you're gonna love it. I went from the 3 to the 7 and wow. this is going to be even better.

I have to see it in person, but the pictures don't make it look great. In the pictures, it looks too tall.

Lol I'm going to the Note 8 from the Galaxy s8+ for that reason. The curves on the gs8+ feel like a waste of screen.

Same as the color and camera hump thread, for me it's all about getting feces done and the boxing of the sides increases usable screen area which is win. Short answer, don't care, looks= last priority.

I was thinking the same based on photos on the net but in the real life it looks little bit better than S8+ in my eyes.

the s8+ was too long in your pocket...this thing is going to be ridiculous. Note FE/7 seems the ideal to me.
Are these now appearing in shops for pre-orders? I'm not ordering one until I've compared it to my FE.

In my personal opinion i hate how the s8+ is so round and i think that is kinda ugly, i personally prefer the look of the Note 8 over the S8 / plus by far. Then again i've always been a Galaxy Note fan.

That is kinda wrong, Samsung has always done this with there "Note" Series and you are correct its what makes the Note stand out from all these other devices which i think is a good thing. I mean it's not like the next "S" Model is gonna be like a "Note" It will be more similar to the "S" Series and the latest from that is the S8 Plus which has infact gotten smaller just a bit taller.

I actually feel the complete opposite, I think the rounded corners of the s8+ look ugly and the squarish "candy bar shape" looks much more uniform.

I really love how more squared off the display looks compared to the S8 Plus I'm using right now. Love, love, love that.

Subjective. I prefer the squared shape of the Note 8 to my SGS8+. Its just taste.

I agree, but each note was boxier than their respective counterparts. It is one of the main attributes of the Note; more real estate for the SPen...you are correct, though, with the curve variances between Notes. I think that once users start using the pen and seeing how the screen performs, users will accept the boxy nature more so than at first glance. What do you think?

I'm in the same boat. I love my Note 3 but to get Nougat on it (Resurrection Remix), I had to say goodbye to the S-pen. I really miss taking pics of my family and drawing dicks on their faces. I've pre-ordered the Note 8 and I'm pissing all over the rug like an excited puppy.

Ladies can love boxy too...

When I was at Samsung checking out the note, I heard some comments that hmmm looks too big for my hand etc. I feel that those that are note users will appreciate the big Boxy look as it allows them to use the phone to its fullest but as usual ladies will be more negative to this look

I'm a "Lady" and I love the boxy look....Boxy can still be sexy (if a phone can even be sexy) but this N8 boxy still has some smooth rounded lines on it. I love it. I'm coming from an S8+ too. Cannot wait to start using it. I'm hoping I'll hold onto this phone for awhile...my phone addiction is getting expensive! LOL! I'm a total Apple Fan Girl too but still extremely bored with iPhones (even my jailbroken 6+) and iOS. Loving my Android options and setup. Have no plans to switch...even to an iPhone 8.

I Had a note 3, a note 4 and currently a 1 year old, perfectly fine note 7, so, the note 8 is the ONLY logical phone for me, as a long time note user, no other phone would fullfil my expectations, I have always liked the "BOXY" look, as it sets appart the S and note series, I will go for the black, so the camera module looks is of no consequence to me

I've just received my N910C in the mail and so far I am loving it. The phone feels so nice in my hand and I'm gonna be getting a Spigen Tough Armor Case for it soon. I will be posting every so often as to say how my experience has been so far with the N910C.

Good luck with new N4 . Just to recommend try Samsung note 4 protective cover, it is official Samsung product and less bulkier than Spigen. it look's great On N4.

Does it offer good protection for the Note 4? Because that is the main reason I'm considering getting the Spigen Tough Armor for my Note 4.
Also does anybody have the Case-Mate POP Case for the Note 4? I want to know if it's a 2 or single part case.

I agree with you, I have the blue one, I read around the internet spigen covers does scratch the Note 4 sides !!!
Day 1 with my Galaxy Note 4. Yes, I am now officially using my Note 4 as my daily driver and so far I am loving it. The only problems I've had is that some of my old apps and game. I have also notice that some of my DivX/XviD avi videos won't play on the bundle video player, which is strange as I can play them without any problems on my old SGSII. I'm getting excellent cell reception despite the fact that it took forever for my cell provide to transfer my cell data from my old SIM to a new MicroSIM. Waiting for it to activate took a few hours.
The audio quality on the stock bundle music player is amazing despite the fact that I am still using the headset supplied with my old SGSII.
Still getting use to the size difference, but the fact that it is more or less the same thickness as my old SGSII makes it quite easy to handle. I'm surprised at how well the Note 4 is constructed it feels like a real high grade Premium phone when compared to my old SGSII. Which makes me wonder why Samsung didn't adopt the design of the Note 4 for the SGS6 flagship as I believe that it gives the same premium feel but keeps the removable battery and microSDCard expandability which made them a real fan favorite.

I've actual read on Amazon that the official Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Protective Cover doesn't offer as much protection as other cases. One reviewer even said that they dropped their Note 4 with the Samsung Protective Cover on and it cracked the aluminum frame.

MX Player is the best video player for Android, in my experience. It should play anything you throw at it. Free ad-supported version is at:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mxtech.videoplayer.ad&hl=en_GB
Or you can get the Pro version to support the developer and lose the ads. Also VLC is another free option:

Well it is alaways possible to crack phone.. it depends how and on what it fell ..so.. i have tryed many casses 4 my device so far i am pleased with protective cover.. in my opinion i think it offers enough protection in every day use ..

Yeah, I'm just gonna install MoboPlayer but I find it funny how I can play all those same videos on my SGSII's stock video player but I can't play them on the stock video player on my Note 4....
just switched over from S4 I9505 to N910C, just updating FW and will be rooting it. I think I'll love it! Love SGP's casing, been using them since S2 days. I like the neo hybrid especially
1 Week Update:
So it's been a week since I've gotten my Note N910C and I've also gotten a Spigen Tough Armor Case in Gunmetal for it. I really don't get what everybody is saying about the Spigen Tough Armor Case adding allot of bulk to the Note 4, as I've had it on my Note 4 for a week now and I hardly notice much of a size difference with it on or off. I'm really enjoying my Note 4, I've managed to install Street Fighter IV HD on it finally turns out I have to download a different version of the game for my Note 4. Had to configure the voicemail number of my cell provider. Otherwise it's been really good. Took a few days to get use to the size difference from using my old SGSII but now it feels so weird to use a smaller phone. I love the screen quality when watching videos, the colors are amazing and the blacks are much better than traditional LCD panels.

I've taken my Note 4 in and out of my Spigen Tough Armor a few times since I've had it and so far it's been fine. I guess if you know how to take the phone out of the case you can avoid scratching the aluminium sides.
I followed the instructions on how to do it on this youtube video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gnEptW3hJrY
I've recently just notice something interesting with regards to the Galaxy Note 4's display, which I didn't notice when I 1st got it. At 1st I thought it was a manufacturing defect but on further research I know it's actually part of the Note 4's design. The screen on the Note 4 has a slight curve, which makes the screen look like it has a bulge in the center of the screen. After some online research I found out that this is part of the Note 4's design for provide better viewing angles.
Week 2 Update:
So it's been about 2 weeks since I've had my Note 4 and I am still loving it! I've even been able to get up to 5 days of battery life by disabling WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS and Cell Data Connectivity and only turning them on when I need them.
I've also discover that the slight bulge in the center of the display is part of the Note 4's design as it sports 2.5D glass, which enables better viewing angles than traditional flat displays. I'm still blown away by how good the colors look on the SuperAMOLED QuadHD display, I recently rewatch the Ryu & Ken Vs M.Bison (Vega to those in Asia) fight in the end of the Street Fighter II anime movi, which really shows off the display! I've also played a few low power games Unlock and Bejewelled 2 that work great as expected. I did do a quick race in Asphalt 8 and I barely noticed any dropped frames or lag in performance.
Call quality is excellent and I do get excellent cell reception despite the fact that my cell provider doesn't have particular good network coverage.

I would find out what LTE Bands they use as that could be what is causing the problem with your Note 4. But then again the N910C does work with allot of international Cat4 LTE bands.

Awesome
Just one question, though. If I were to purchase it, would I need to do something on the G4, or would it work right out of the box with accurate percentages (not staying in 0 for hours before turning off)?
They sadly recently posted on Facebook that they moved the launch until september. "Thanks for your support, we plan to launch the LG G4 battery case at the end of September."
Love me ZeroLemon stuff. I'll gladly review a sample
sweet just the news i needed to tip LG G4 as the choice of my next phone
I bought ZL batteries for my S4 and really got good performance. However, they only lasted about six months and swelled. Maybe the G4 will be better.

Is there a way that you could make the edges a little less sharp than the G3 and Note 4 case? My god, it's like holding a cactus in your hand. I personally would like a good mix between the Note 3 case and the formerly mentioned style, as long as it's relatively comfortable to hold.

I hate the idea of going back to a small battery.
And btw, I don't like the light skinny phones. I love my big brick phone.
Still on the fence about upgrading. Maybe note 4, maybe note 5.
I'm just crazy enough that the upcoming keyboard case might be what sways me to note 5!

Not for nothing, but who would need such a case? Maybe a survivalist or something. Most of us are around a charging source somewhere (home, office, car, etc.), especially since there are tons of portable USB chargers. I think the Note 5 is too gorgeous to place in a brick.
It'll be cool for the airport. Or traveling international. For everyday use I'll just carry a power bank that is quick charge compatible.
I'll carry a wireless battery powered charger before putting a huge battery case on.

Not to bash the Note5 or Sammy (Loving mine so far), but I've heard the keyboard case is kind of dumb. Sounds like the keyboard functions by little rubber pieces under the keys actually pushing the keys of the on screen keyboard. I hope this is not the case but I believe it is.
Yeah that's all it is. But if it helps me to speed type without as many typos I will love it!
As to the big battery case, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I know it's not for everyone but I love my big phone and everything else is too darn light. I don't even like the way my phone feels with the regular battery in. I like it hefty.
I think they look really pretty naked but there's no way I'd risk a drop and shatter anyway.
It would be nice to be able to use other cases though. I'm stuck with the zerolemon tpu that came with the battery or the rugged case. Nothing else fits. (exception, I could rig an otterbox defender to work but never wanted to spend the money)
Who knows what I'll end up doing.
I'm not tied to Samsung so if someone else would ever come up with a ginormous phone that comes near the specs I'd look at that too.
Maybe I should just use a laptop as a phone.

I agree, it's not a good idea to carry with a new giant case and battery when the new phone has good battery life, which lasts all day with one charge, sometimes a day and a half for me. Anyway, the Zerolemon is still an excellent alternative for a long business trip.

If you want a good, very fast, keyboard try out Fleksy. Doesn't have swype style typing, which I don't like anyway. Its the best tap typing experience I've ever had, and I can type 3x faster on fleksy with almost no mistakes than any other. And the autocorrect is top notch.
80 dollars for what amounts to a plastic molded keyboard that presses the onscreen keyboard underneath with capacitive nubs. It doesn't even detect it using some kind of cool technology, just a specific 4 point capacitive pattern on the screen triggers it. LAME. When its the 15$ its actually worth, I would consider buying one just to have it.
I'd pay $100 if it makes it so I can type faster.
Meh. Money is no object. lol
I miss my g1. (well, I still have it, just miss typing on it.)

Sadly its highly unlikely the zerolemon mod for the note 5 will be 10000mah. It will more then likely be a charging case that comes close in total when paired with the stock battery to 10000mah. Hopefully it comes with a holster. The charging cases while the only option vs the removable extended battery of old dont provide the same seamless operation.
I need such a case. So do the 14 people that work for me that I upgraded to the note 5. The battery life is abysmal. Even when idle its abysmal. Its a great phone for productivity if it would stay powered on until lunch and right now it does not do that. You take a few pics and answer a few emails and its under 60%. We tested it against the Note 2 with the stock 3 year old battery and the note 5 got its ass kicked.
The zerolemon packs totally change how people use the phones. With a 10000mah-ish capacity you can literally use the phone all day. You instantly stop caring and just go. The phone always has battery. You start to forget that there is a battery in the phone that needs to be charged. On occasion you plug it in when you go to sleep... Thats it. These mods take the phone from toy status to a serious tool status.
For people like me the case is a win win. I have big hands. Its almost impossible for me to hold the note 5 without touching the screen at the same time. They have gone a little to far with trimming down device. I crave being able to grab my phone again without having to coddle the device..
I went for note 4 instead of note 5. For all the intended purposes, note 4 is a better device for me. But using zerolemon case causes bad echo whenever using speakerphone. Anyone with the same problem?

Does anyone know of a third party metal S-Pen? Probably not for the Note 5 considering it just released, but what about the Note 4? I love drawing on the Note 5, but I dislike the feel of the plastic body of the S-Pen -_-.
Mont Blanc made a series of pens for the Note 4, but they're pricey. Outside of that the best pen for the Note 4 was the Bamboo Feel pen. It was for the Note 3&4, but I'm not sure about it's compatibility with the Note 5.
But then there's this... The new Bamboo Smart! It's designed for the Samsung Tab A and the Note. It's brand new so I'd imagine this is your best bet. http://www.wacom.com/en-us/products/stylus/bamboo-smart
I was thinking of more on the lines of a replacement that still goes into the slot for the S Pen. I have a graphics tablet for professional work. But for the most part, ive been drawing less and less due to school and stuff. With the Note 5, it has been much more convenient to just draw whenever I can and not bring a computer and tablet.

Oh, I see. I think that would have to come from Samsung then. What's wrong with the one that comes with it then? I get it that you'd like the pen to be real metal instead of the plastic that it is made from, but it works just fine.

It does work but it just doesn't feel right. I have been drawing for a long time now as my hobby (and for a time, job). I am used to metal pens and pencils or wood. At the very least the plastic stylus of my graphics tablet is much more well built and feels more sturdier of a material than the S-Pen. The S-Pen's plastic just feels cheap compared to other plastics and the weight is too light for my tastes.
So while I still plan on using the S-Pen, just wondering if there was a better third party S-Pen.

rhinoshield crash guard

Is anyone planning on getting this case? I got one for my OnePlus 3T and did not like it, I've read that they have improved since then though.
Anyone get it for the s8/8+? How was it with that?
I had one for my S8, and I have already pre-ordered one for my Note 8. I've used these since I initially got an S6, I think.
They're the best. I use them when I go hiking, play sports, or go out drinking. They improved them quite a bit for the S8 (in fact, they did a free replacement from v1 to v2 for my S8 case) - they fixed the difficulty of hitting buttons, which was my biggest complaint for the Pixel version I had.
They also recently sent out an email about improving the material for the Note version. It's now something like 40% smaller?
I really hope it's compatible with my Whitestone!

That was my biggest grip about it with my OnePlus was the buttons were impossible to press.
I'm waiting to see if it's compatible with the Whitestone as well before I pull the trigger on both.

The YouTube video posted preciously stated that it IS Whitestone compatible
Mines came in today.
It feels great in the hand.
It is slimer the the s8plus one i have (had ver1)
Buttons press is very good. My s8plus one was a bit hard at time.
The bottom where the ports are are soft and dont dog into my fingers.
The spen slot is open more on the right. It lets you press the button and then use a right finger to pull it out.
Overall its great and worth the money.
I havent done any drop test, because thats not what i do.
Mine came today to and yes it works with my Power peak product tempered glass screen protector perfect. But I'm not doing a drop test on my $1000 phone

Just received my crash guard. This is a very minimal case. The buttons are tactile. It's very easy to put the case on. There isn't much give on the side when you pull it so it stays on pretty tight. However, The case itself is a bit slippery.
Screen protector I am using is the Spigen neo flex and it is compatible.

Slippery?
Mines and my wife's are fine. I can grab the phone by the edges with light pressure and the phone not slide out.
