Mobile phone battery is as far as every literate phone user is concerned the best thing that can make a user happy using his/her phone. Using a mobile phone whose battery is non-functional or weak is a horrible experience which every phone user hates very much, which in this case I have been a victim.
I consistently thought that licking the contact point of a phone battery is a very healthy way of knowing if your battery is still alive and kicking and also to test for the charge in it. This understanding is what I knew almost every phone technician thinks its good for phone batteries but on the contrary, I was amazed to find out just today as I bought a new phone, specifically AllCall Rio and I proceeded to read the guide inscribed into the phone so as to make a better user.
I was suprised to find out that the actions we take everyday (licking the point of contact) thinking its designated to detect the battery life was actually wrong. Licking the battery contact point causes short circuit, rusts battery and reduces the battery efficiency.
Ya... that's probably not the best idea.
Might as well lick your outlet as well to make sure it's working, and while you're doing that, lick the stove too while it's on to make sure the fire's up and running, you know, to make sure it's still working and such...
But seriously, I know licking the contact point won't kill you or something, but I still don't want to lick the contact point. And there has to be better ways to do this than use your tongue to lick a damn piece of metal connected to a battery.
Did someone mention licking ?

In all honesty, I seriously wonder who actually came up with the idea that licking the contact point would be a surefire way to tell whether a phone or something is alive and kicking. There has to be better ways to do something like this; I know that using your finger to touch the contact point doesn't give enough feedback in most cases, but some kind of life hack must exist somewhere for this sort of situation.
The fact that people consistently lick their contact points makes me fearful about what would happen if they did it with something which took more juice - for example, a few years ago I accidentally touched one of the prongs a partly-inserted power supply for my desktop and already got quite a shock from it, which numbed my whole body. The consequences for licking something like that must be far worse than just numbness and tingling...
In the end, though, I never heard anything about licking contact points where I live. Maybe it's because the people I associate with are more literate with computers than most, or maybe because the people in the US have already unearthed the truths and the dangers of licking contact points...either way, I know that's something I won't do, probably ever.
EDIT: Also realized that licking the contact point in most cases would mean turning off the phone (if my assumption that you take out the battery to lick it would be correct). If not, then the fact that people lick there phones would never allow me to get a secondhand phone...though I wouldn't have anyways, seeing as how you can already hide water damage on a phone with just a bit of bleach on the indicator.
These days, I just assume that any secondhand phone is due to water damage. Just to be safe.
Hi, I also just aquired the allcall rio.
Can you help me out with a few things,
1. does the back come off in order to reach the battery?
2. on a normal phone pressing the middle button normally gains you access into the app menu, for some reason i can only access the home screen with the apps being accessed by sliding the home screen to multi home screens, is this normal?
3. have you rooted your phone and if so can you leadme to where you done this?
I like the phone, just wondering whether what iv stated are normal features or a fault with mine
Thanks in advance for any help / info
Cheers
Thanks for sharing with these recommendations! The phone battery can really sometimes be a problem, however in my case it isn't an annoying thing because except mobile connection I use my smartphone only for reading and lurking through net

Something about these PPC, I just fall in love with. I had my wizard few years ago. Been through everything together. Getting girl's numbers, text messaging friends, and everything a phone should do. Became my best friend. Then when my phone got soaked in Gatorade, there was no way of recovering it. Felt like I lost a friend. I actually cried that night.
Now I have a kaiser and already a month, something about these phones, I'm starting to fall in love with. When I play around with my phone and people came up to me and ask me if its a sidekick or an iphone, i feel like the phone has been insulted. No one makes fun of my phone like that!!! There are even times I start talking to my phone and playing around with it for no apparent reason. Am I a psycho or is this normal behavior?
Am I the only psycho here?

When people ask me if my phone is an iPhone, I try to limit the nauseus feeling in my stomach and inform them that my phone actually serves a purpose other than emptying my wallet.

You're not alone.... here's another true geek, picking up my phone a few times every hour just to check if the todayscreen is still there... or to change the theme and change it back after an hour...
It's my best friend and you know what? it'll never cheat on me or start talking back

Of course it wouldn't. It knows how easily you could get another phone just like it were it to betray you in such a manner. LOL
It's kinda funny actualy. I try to limit my showing off of my phone to my parents and close friends, but they blab more about it to people than I do... They tell me that the first thing the people they tell is "must be an iPhone...". they usualy reply, "No, he doesn't touch anything made my apple..."

We'll see how the phone acts when you purchase the new TYTN III
Ok, there should be enough people here who either know the technical specs or, from some insane drive to know how everything works, have taken their Kaiser/Tilts apart and can answer this.
I'm using a new EMail program (SEVEN) that maintains an always-on data connection. I'm trying to find out if I should be worried about the radiation/signals my phone is putting out.
For those of you who wonder: Yes, I've done my research here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=428065&highlight=radiation), and, while I do appreciate humor, I'd love something more than flip answers. ;-) Call me a worrier.
I've surmised (and been told) that an always-on data connection is not the same as if you were constantly talking on the phone...only to have that thought countered with the fact that the radio of the phone still has to be broadcasting, even with a "mostly-silent-yet-always-on" data connection...which means radiation nonetheless. And the circle of logic/worry continues.
Does anyone who knows enough about constant data connections and the Tilt's radio shed some light on this? I'd REALLY appreciate it! Thanks!

Well, you could always hold your gieger counter up to the phone and measure the mSv, but it would be so miniscule as to not be of any significant concern. The average background radiation level is 2.405 mSv, (0.02405 REM), while the HTC Kaiser has an average radiation output of 0.159 mSv, (0.00159 REM). Taking into account background radiation, and a Kaiser in your pocket, you are exposed to approximatly 2.564 mSv, (0.002564 REM). You are well below the safe radiation level for even radiation workers in the United States, which has been established at 50 mSv. In order to be in any danger from radiation, you would need to exceed 51 REM, (5100 mSv). before even temporary sterility may result. For a potentially lethal dose, you would need to come into contact with radiation levels exceeding 101 REM, (10100 mSv). It is highly improbable one will be exposed to a harmful level of radiation from a cellular telephone.

If you place silver foil on your head, it'll bounce the radiation away...
Typical no worry scenario gama phones don't exist and there are so many carsonegenics in the world that where would we stop.
My point is no worries.
"don't believe the hype"
While it will not effect you, holding it up to your ear, whatever you do, do not keep your phone in your pocket, while connected.
Otherwise within a year, " Big Jim and the Twins " will shrivel up to nothing. Be fore warned ....................................oh wait, or is that steroids ?

I would sumerize that leaving the data connection on gave this man his power (and I was told too)
You guys are hilarious. ;-P
Thanks to those of you who were took the time to answer. To give some additional background: I'm not putting it in my pocket; I'm wearing it in a belt-clip holster/carrier, so it would be my kidneys I'd be worried about.
Also, keep in mind that I'm concerned about cancer effects over time. I saw the radiation measurements k-semler provided...those small doses are OK intermittently...are they OK every day for a few years?
I use a bluetooth earpiece, so I'm OK with my head (the earpiece is designed to power down after several minutes of inactivity).
I would think a Dr or someone would know about that. Just make sure you keep it near the kidney that isn't near your liver.
I normally keep my phone in a cargo pocket.. The knees love radiation.
Alright here are some key things I need to fix on my "excellent condition" kaiser..........
I apologize in advance as I need to vent a bit But any help/advice would be much appreciated.
1. Battery life is pretty bad, lets say if I leave just the screen on, it drains about 1-5% per minute. Meaning I have to keep it plugged in whenever I am not using it. (I have SPB Shell which is supposed to drain batteries a bit more... Can't be this bad though...)
2. Camera does not function whatsoever, all I get is a neat black screen with a laggy camera interface for some reason. (Previous owner flashed to WM 6.1, possible cause?)
3. I think I've had about three successful calls in around 2 weeks of using the phone, every other call it appears I have answered it, but I hear nothing and neither does the other person. At this point I reboot and try to call the person back, so I only use the Kaiser for texting. (Also due to the flash perhaps?)
4. No idea how to work the GSP, so far it only works when I have a wifi connection with google maps (no data plan) and when it does it only give me a very rough general location, basically it shows me that I'm somewhere in my neighbourhood. Don't know if there is a standard program included (without monthly fees) or I have to find 3rd party software, or pay monthly fees for the one included which I'm not going to do.
Other problems....
5. The sliding hinge is very loose, the gap between the screen and keyboard when slid closed is at least 1mm wide normally.
6. The tilting has a hard time staying tilted, I always keep a finger behind the screen and the back of the keyboard.
7. Dpad & face buttons are loose and can slide around a bit.
8. The screen orientation gets confused fairly often and stays in landscape mode, requiring reset.
9. The AT&T animated bootup logo is <expletive>. I reset the Kaiser very often from crashes, dead calls, wrong orientation, broken camera, and dead batteries and the bootup animation very cleverly include sounds so everyone around can hear me reboot my piece of <expletive> 7 times a day even though I have it set to mute.
10. I am very disapointed how MS still has such a hard time making a proper os suitible for a mobile phone and just how little they have improved since my old WM2003se phone and Dell Axim, they clearly have the most experience yet they still cannot see how lame their OS really is compared to the... sigh... iphone, get your act together MS... Please? Keep your superior compatibility and excellent user created/custom community but please, please, ditch the lame archaic UI, its that easy. The real problem I have is that even all the fancy mods in the world cannot hide how ugly and user unfriendly this windows mobile OS is, heres hoping WM7....
11. And I thought my HTC Magician was a large phone..........
You Poor Guy
Wow that sucks for you, sounds like not only did the flashing of the rom was bad or a bad rom(unfinished), and like the phone has been taken apart and was not put together correctly. My tilt is great I got WM6.5 and the new SBP Shell 3.0, No problems here at all. You need most likely depending on your experience is to take it apart and tighten all screws make sure the camera is plugged in and sound like the dpad buttons might need some super glue to hold the frame (of the buttons) to the case.
Then just go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=433835
when your done go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=378
Try a Hard Reset so you can start clean and go from there.
And remember

It sounds like the camera and call issue is caused by an incorrect ROM / raido match. Try flashing a new ROM and radio meant for eachother. For the loose parts, find a disassembly guide, A T5, T6, and 00 screwdriver and take the phone down so you can retighten the mechanism.
hmm thanks for all the help! looking at the rom/radio forum, how exactly do you decide which rom or radio to go with? seems like there are so many to choose from, I feel like such a noob even though I have flashed my ds and my old axim before i'm not entirely sure what these roms are, pre loaded/updated os's or something??
I agree though it looks like a bad rom/radio, Ill see what I can do about that and the loose parts...
Yeah this is the first time I got burnt with ebay, sucks cuz i had a few options but i went with the seller with the best communication as the others weren't replying, then i finally got a reply from a cheaper phone that seemed to be a much better choice hours later, after that i had a bad feeling and unfortunately it came true... oh well, this phone is a lot fatter and heavier than i hoped, i dunno i swore to get a smaller phone than my magician... meh either way i'll make do with what i have, sigh... thanks again.

Hi to all i was just wondering if it is illegal to mod other peoples phone because i am in school and i mod peoples phone you know give them root and change boot img (like the T-mobile G1/My Touch 3G) and my dad thinks its illegal and want me to stop he also thinks that some one is going to connect it to a bomb and blame me i just want to get some other peoples views and such thanks for you feed back!-)
I'm pretty sure the "modding G1 and giving them root" police are only in Oregon, so you should be ok. Although I hear they are expanding their field offices to include Fargo, ND and North Grovesnerdale, CT so be on the lookout if you are near those areas.
In all serious, I think you are fine.....

**** good lookin out. I don't want to go to jail... haha
Ahahhhahahahaahahahahahahhahahahhahahaahahahahahhaahha! Ok, now that I got that out of my system. It is not illegal to mod an electronic device. When it becomes illegal is when you mod the device to do illegal actions, like play burnt copies of video games, or run illegal version of operating systems, etc. With that said, modding your g1/mt3g is just fine. As long as your not modding the phone to be a detonator for a nuclear bomb, your fine. Be sure to issue a disclaimer before modding anyone's phone. You don't want anyone coming back to your demanding money for a bricked phone. Just let them know that your trained in what you do, but there is still no guarantee that everything will go as planned. I've modded a couple of peoples g1's and I had them reply to an email with my personal disclaimer. Just as a back up...
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SUPER FUNNY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! but seriously...when I was younger I ALWAYS questioned if my actions hack/mod wise were legal......
fyi, it's now only illegal to load an old cyanogen mod with the proprietary google apps (for now, who knows what the future will bring legislation wise) .....according to google.....and probably their power lawyers.
While we are on the subject of legallity?
Hi to all i was just wondering if it is illegal to watch interspecies erotica? just keep clear of any suspicious activities.... if someone asks for your help in making something that goes boom...its more than likely an fbi agent
It's not illegal unless you distribute copyrighted software. If you are simply rooting the phone you are fine, but if you have to downgrade it you are technically redistributing software without a license to do so. Either way I wouldn't worry about them coming to knock on your door for flashing a few kids phones.
On another note. Although it may make you the cool guy in class who can mod phones, I would advise you tell them to learn on their own. Otherwise you will end up being tech support for countless idiots who don't know what to do with root. Do you really feel like spending hours walking people through a Hero rom install, or SD partitioning? Cause that's what you are asking for by doing so.
The whole point of performing such mods is for the learning experience, and expanding the capabilities of your device for personal enjoyment. It's not so people can say "look what I can do" or "my phone is cooler than yours". My opinion is: If you won't put forth the effort to read and learn how, you don't need it.
You probably spent a good bit of time learning what you have. I know it feels great to be able to show off those skills, but in the long run they will thank you for making them learn rather than doing it for them.

Okay there's two types of phones (phone lines, with different categories of course)
Theres the Mobile and the Landline, those will be our two starts, then there's the stages of knowledge in those that I'm going to point out (just bored) here they are
Landline
-User, someone who knows it plugs in and calls
-Operator, knows a bit more about the phone system, ANI, etc.
-Technician/Linesman, runs the wire, knows how to plug it in, testing to see if it works properly, phone switch specifics, etc.
-Phreak, knows ins and outs of exploring the phone system and how to abuse it (most novices abuse knowledge like that.) Know how to operate switches without owning them, mainly from knowledge passed down, relatively small amounts of Phreaks now adays.
-Engineer, Knows absolutely everything about the phone system, if not, more.
Mobile
-
-User, knows how to operate their phone
-Adv. User - knows what devs tell them and how to fix their stuff when stuff goes bad. (not always)
-Unnamed, the people who activate your cell, provide cheap customer service about medium basic things on your phone, from APN to IMEI.
-Developer, knows how to, well, develope, knowledge of the Operating System, Firmware, etc etc. Most people reading this fit in here or in User.
-Phreak, covered in landline
-Engineers, covered in landline.
Whatever category you're in, you can share it, or you can discuss, or not share, or not discuss - pointless thread nonetheless, but, oh well.

Correct. But there are multiple levels of "being" when they reach that state. When a Legendary Developer reaches a state of complete knowledge of a system, they transcend into beings of pure light. These beings, having memories of what it was like starting out in their journey, will do their best to guide others down this path of enlightenment as well.
