I received my Unlocked Galaxy Note 8 Direct from Samsung today. Coming from the AT&T Galaxy s8+ on which the build quality was pretty phenomenal. Almost perfectly smooth edges where the glass meets the frame on the front and back. Perfect smooth feeling in the hand.
The very first thing I noticed when I took the Note 8 out of the box is the almost sharp feeling edges where the frame protrudes substantially further than the glass does. At first I thought maybe it was intentional to help protect the glass on impact if you were to drop it but it just feels terrible in the hand. Really *really* noticeable.
Has anybody else noticed this? Part of me hoping this is NOT normal and I can get a replacement and the other half of me wants everybody elses to be the same so I don't have to try to get a replacement. It really does feel "not right" in the hand though... not sharp like you could cut yourself but sharp enough to scrape skin off if you press hard.
For the full retail price I paid..... kinda bummed.
Mines the same. Purchased from Samsung direct a tmobile variant.

That actually makes me feel a little better. Thank you. :good:
Sorry to hear that. I know I'd be gutted if my Note 8 arrived and it had an issue. I'm on a Note 3 so I've kinda been waiting for 4 years for this phone and the anticipation is killing me. I always put a case on my phones so I probably wouldn't be devo about it but it would still be disappointing. I'll let you know if mine has the same feel and lie to you if it doesn't.
Yeah, the edges are different due to the spen. Samsung made the edges closer to 90 degrees for spen usage, which gives more screen real estate to write on.

I knew that. I just wish the edge was smooth where the glass meets the frame. Basically my frame is substantially wider than the glass is, if that explains it better.

To be honest its not bothering me so much today. You get used to it pretty quickly I guess. Thanks for your reply.

Judging by the recently leaked press shots it appears as if the smooth curve of the side edges of glass as found on the Nexus 4 is gone.
The face seems perfectly flat with an equal edge all around.
Personally I liked how easy it was to sideswipe across those smooth edges.
Going back to a flat face seems somewhat backwards...

There really aren't many threads in this section, and I don't consider this one useless because he raises a good point. It may have been discussed in another thread, but some of them are over a hundred pages long...

Yea to be fair I don't remember seeing this topic brought up much in any of the threads and I have read them all.
It's actually a good question N4 edges are REALLY smooth and I hope N5 will feature the same!
the thing is the phone is not even out so there really isnt anything to compare because we dont know how its going to feel in hand. its just gonna be a thread of how people want the nexus feel, which we already have a thread for. these threads need to be held of til more info is actually released from Google and reviewers is all im saying.
Looks like it's gone indeed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yg6IFhOBpq0
Maybe it was too difficult/expensive to manufacture? The LG G2 also looks like it has a normal flat screen, as far as i remember.
Maybe something to do with the new gorilla glass 3 being present (if this is true).
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
May have something to do with the practical. How many people knocked the nexus 4 for having a glass back and screen that easily cracks? A screen that slopes of at the edges is more likely hit glass if it falls. So they got rid of the glass back and better protect the screen. Just a thought.
But I think manufacturing costs probably are the biggest driver in nexus devices.
I'm going to contribute to the clueless guessing game and add that it's probably gone due to the very narrow bezel design. I prefer a larger screen in a smaller case.

I also wonder if gorilla glass 3 is used on the n5, not like fragile one used on the n4. And I do hope the curved edges are gone. It was impossible to keep a screen protector on with those curved edges, specially with a case.

Don't get me wrong, I really like the design (though I kinda miss the awesome looking back cover of N4 and the phone reminds me of current Xperia design a bit too much) but the rough edges make it harder to put inside my pocket, as well as make phone calls a bit painful to my ear.
Rough edges?

I don't find them rough. They protrude, but smoothly. Is it the fact they're not flush you're referring to.

I don't get how the edges make it hard for you to put the phone in your pocket. Do you wear skinny jeans? The edges aren't flush or tapered like how it was on my Nexus 4 but it isn't anything terrible. I do admit I wish they were tapered though.

I like the sharper edge, it's part of the package that makes this phone feel awesome in the hand. I really don't know how it affects putting it in your pocket though...

I can see where you're coming from. I came from a VZW GNex too, and the edges are a bit more pronounced than the rounded feel of the GNex. But I, personally, dig it. Plus, I have it in Diztronic TPU case anyways, so they are not as "sharp" as they are without the case.
Sent from my TouchPad using xda app-developers app
yes edges are really sharp for me too, but i have a case which helps a lot
The same here. This is probably the one and only "negative" thing (really minor) about this device I noticed.
When making a phone call, I can clearly feel the sharp edge cutting through my ear (exaggeratedly speaking).
A bit unpleasant, but can be easily avoided by not pushing a phone against the ear too much.
(owning white version)
If I "roll" my thumb over the side of the phone in normal use (pretend you were "swiping out" from the middle of the screen until your thumb totally leaves the surface), I can feel the edge of the plastic housing sticking up just a tiny fraction of a millimeter above the glass.
I'm assuming everybody has this? For me, it's the only thing about the whole device that doesn't feel "premium". I come from a Galaxy S2, so in a way it's better (the S2 edges had a chrome plating that chipped off, which felt gross) but in a way it's worse (at least they were never "sharp"). I figure I'll get used to it, and maybe they'll wear a bit smoother with use.
anyone else having these symptoms? mine started out of nowhere, like 2 weeks into owning it lol go figure. it's on the right hand side near the volume and power buttons. if I'm holding with my right hand and I push down to tap on the screen, it creaks really bad. like, really bad and loud lol awful. wtf samsung? I never had these quality issues on the s3 or s4. stupid samsung.

Do you have the back warping as well? Hard to imagine what could be happening that would be so loud. No idea.
nope. back is perfectly level. it's just this one spot that's creaking. my old nexus 7 original did this as well, but that can be expected from a 200 dollar tablet... but not a "premium" tablet. oh well. annoying. it didn't do anything until like today, so it just wore out over time I guess? crappy but whatever. this is always an issue with samsung products i know, but it's the first time I've experienced it with a Samsung.

It would indeed, but lots of people like to go naked with their devices. Personally I prefer my tablets in a case/cover and my phones naked. At the end of the day we shouldn't have to use cases or covers to disguise creaking.

I'm pretty sure it's the gold trim that creaks, not the back cover. oh well. I ordered a ten dollar magnetic sleep wake book case, like the one I had on my nexus 7. we'll see how that works.

That's the problem with cheap trim. Looks good at first but then you always end up regretting it.
I checked my S 8.4 LTE for creaks, but I have the book cover on and don't ever want to go through the horror of putting it on again. So the only accessible area on the back is about half towards the side where the IR Blaster is, which is where you are having creaks on anyway.
I do not hear any creak on mine, pressed that whole exposed area, especially around the IR Blaster, the trim all around.
I wonder how big is the intel LTE modem is, cause I'm thinking, what if this is where the modem is located on the LTE model. So, for WiFi model, the modem would be missing and leaving an empty gap under the hood, and pressing against this area would flex the back plate resulting creaking.
Just making wild theories

Honestly though I don't think the work very well. My cousin has the s6 edge, and with the tempered glass and a case (uag I believe) on it caused all sorts of touch recognition issues. Could be dependent on case and all that, but still seems like a lot of trouble.

I wasn't really very impressed with what I saw online, but when I went to Best Buy to check it out I was sold. You really have to see it in person to appreciate it. The curved edge display is much less intrusive than previous edge models, I felt like I could hold onto it without worrying about dropping it (since I won't be using a case). It didn't feel laggy at all. The phone feels nice in my hand. I liked the silver a lot, but even just the reflection of the store lights was very distracting. The S-pen worked really well. I know a lot of people don't really use the S-pen but I use it all the time on my Note 4. I like the new S-pen features, the magnify and the translate. I'm glad they brought back the SD card, that's the reason I didn't buy the Note 5. I like the IP68 rating, that's a feature I really liked on my S5.
I don't like the absence of a removable battery, or that the phone is only available with the edge display. I'll never use the iris scanner so I feel like that's wasted space and resources. Would be nice if they kept the IR blaster, but honestly I've never used it on my Note 4. Black is pretty plain looking from the back, looks like cheap plastic to me, so we've got the fragile nature of "premium materials" with the look of cheap plastic.

What I like is that Note 7 finallly featurs water resistant and curved screen, which makes the phone more pratical and beautiful. What I dislike is that it doesn't have a bigger battery than S7 as Note 7 get bigger screen. What I care is the Note 7 whether supports Quick Charge 3.0?
Seeing quite a much finger and other hand impressions on the 3T display, which i have not expected on the flagship device. Oneplus3T/3 does not come with Oleophobic coating? if doesn't can we free of prints applying the oneplus curved or noncurved screen guards? Anyone feel the same?
And out of the box received a phone with some unknown screen guard. I doubt the prints are because of this? Anyone removed this and experienced the phone without the guard? If so hows the default display, attracting prints or not?
Um... you do realize that the phone comes with a plastic screen protector pre-installed right? That preapplied one doesn't have oleophobic coating on it. Remove it and you should be good.

I did it a couple of hours ago and I can really tell a difference. I tried it yesterday on my old Nexus 5 and had some trouble for the wax to stick on the surface of my Nexus 5. I was thinking it would be the same on my Oneplus, but interesting enough it stuck there really well. I guess that might just be because the lack of oleophobic coating on the Oneplus.. Either way it's better now, so you should try it if you have the chance
