I'd like to know how Samsung's UI changes with the LCD density changed to the lowest setting before the keyboard turns to "tablet mode".
For example, setting the density (using " adb shell wm density XXX") on the OnePlus 3/3T to anything lower than 289 enables tablet mode, causing chrome to show tabs in the top bar, and the keyboard to change its layout. I have the density set to 289 on my 3T right now. Stock Android just looks massive to me.
If you have a Note 8, could you please set the LCD density using adb (the stock display size setting doesn't go low enough for me) and report how the dialer, camera, keyboard and general ui looks, and if certain things don't work? I remember with the Note 7, lowering the density caused the camera and dialer to shift to the left, but TW may have grown adaptive because of the need to work across multiple sizes.
I would really really appreciate it!!!!
You can just try this out yourself. Enable developer settings and you can just modify LCD Density (DPI) from right in there. No root or ADB required. I'm running on about 460 I think. Stock wasn't small enough for me either.
@imatts check out this app by a recognized dev i met during my work on the LG V20. It needs the adb command ran since we dont have root, but is really simple to use and provides a few options that stock settings is missing

I would, but I don't have the Note 8, its still shipping. Sorry I didn't mention that lol
I am very familiar with ADB, since every one of my phones have been rooted and I use adb to set density and manually remove bloatware.
It's defaulted to 411. I think 460 is too small.
Anyone find a sweet spot yet?
I'm using 371. Looks good so far.

Thanks, I didn't realize TW has main width built in to dev options.
Could you set that number to 290 and show me the phone app dialer??
You are amazing for doing this BTW!!!

Isn't higher smaller content and more content? You wanted things even larger in screen?
Samsung also allow 3 basic dpi adjustments in Settings > Display > Screen Zoom and Font.
These are 'Small' 411dpi, 'Medium' 360dpi, and 'Large' 320dpi. You can also then set font size separately for that screen size.
I think everyone (myself included) is just getting confused with the ADB shell wm density change. The LCD density is on a smaller number / smaller content, whereas the dev setting "width" is the opposite (larger number = smaller content.
So my LCD density of 289, is the exact same as setting the width to 597.
So yes, using the dev settings, I'd probably set that number to 597

I am having a problem with my screen, this has been a ongoing thing for a while now. I am running cm6 extremely blue from the 19th of Oct, no kernel mod. When I do a clean install my screen displays all images just fine. After a few days some images start looking really bad, instead of the colors blending they become bands of different colors. Its really hard to explain so I attached a screenie of the XDA app, the brown looks horrible. I know thats not the way it is as I have seen the colors blend together, no thick color lines. I ant figure it out for the life of me, is this happening on everyones phones? I dont recall it runnng Fresh rom, and like I said it takes a couple days for it to start happening on cm6. I found a few things in awd launcher that I can disable to help the situation, like wallpaper hack, scrolling widget support, turning these off and or on will help it look better on desktop, but on apps I found nothing to help improve. Could something need editing in the XML files? Or are we all seeing these lines and just dealing with them? Any feedback is appreciated
Oh, and once it starts this even a nandroid back to when it was fine doesnt help. Only a clean install does.
and happens with both apps2sd and internal storage.

This is not occurring on my pictures, gallery. My home screen is fine, as well as calendar widget. Thoroughly in handcent the gray bar up top has the color lines, slacker also has it toward the bottom where it get brighter. Could it be something in framework, maybe I can edit some sort if default setting to use 16 bit, because it looks like 8 bit graphics

I sound like your talking about dithering, like instead of something that should be a gradient it is instead broken up and where you would normally see a smooth transition from a color to color its broken with lines.
Heres some suggestions
cm settings > performance settings : enable surface dithering (which improves image quality but slows the phone some what).
reboot you phone at least once a day.
your screen density might be to high (or low) in your build.prop file.
Updated to extremely blue Oct 25 and problem is gone. Chances are in 2 or 3 days it will be back though

I had set build prop to 150 on all three, the 3rd being default. This has been a issue for some time now. I will leave build prop alone and see what happens. You are exactly right about what I am trying to explain the issue is. Can I set to 150, and what else can or can not be changed? Changing the default density to 150 was something I had never done before, screen would do this at the default 160 as well.

Are you saying your phone is running for a couple of days and then it does it, cause I daily reboot is highly recommended. The phone just doesn't have the internal memory to render the graphics on images with alot of colors.
I would try a 140 on the density.

Well yes and no, it will happen after a few days but I do reboot daily, sometimes a few reboots per day. When I edit build prop I am using Root Explorer, it saves the old file. Should I delete this file, maybe it us confusing the system? Also can I edit the default setting to 140? Thank you for your help and concern

Build prop it is! I tried 140 and still messed up so I tried changing the default to 140 also. That did not help I took all three settings back to 160 and my screen went back to clean and clear. Why can others change the dpi, am I needing to changes something else along with the 2 numbers?
Thank You!

For anyone who doesn't know, this is a neat and simple trick to make the items on your screen bigger or smaller:
EASY WAY (it will keep the setting until you do a hard reset-- holding the power down for 10 or so seconds until it powers off):
1. Download LCDDensity for Root (free) from Market
2. Change density based on your preferences (higher # = bigger items, lower resolution; lower # = smaller items, higher res)
MORE ADVANCED WAY (if you want the change to survive a hard reboot):
1. In root explorer, navigate to system/ and backup your build.prop file.
2. Set system to r/w
3. Hold down on the original file, and select open in text editor
4. Find the two entries where it says:
ro.sf.lcd_density.xdpi=169.33333
ro.sf.lcd_density.ydpi=169.33333
If you wanted your density to be 250, you'd change them to the following single line:
ro.sf.lcd_density=250
5. Save, reboot, and enjoy your NC's new look.
Here are a couple of my homescreens set at 250:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Now, jacking up your LCD density much above 200 will make your status bar look wonky and cut-off. One solution for this is to set it to 250, like above (by changing build. prop - I think the app I mentioned only allow multiples of 20), which will make it look clean (as long as wifi is on). The only problem there is that you'll lose your status bar clock and Notifications in portrait mode ...
... the solution for THIS is to get two apps: hellostatusbar, and quick launch. Set quick launch to open hellostatusbar on a home-button double press, and it will display your Notifications.
FYI the Galaxy Tab's default is 240

The free one, LCDDensity for Root, doesn't keep the change after doing a full (battery pull) reboot. To me, this is less than ideal, but if you don't mind changing it again, knock yourself out.
A battery pull reboot on a NOOKcolor? Don't you need a screwdriver for that?

I believe he is using the phone example for reference. In the case of the NC, the free option should be a good alternative for those not wanting to modify scripts.
Anyway, thanks for providing the entries to change manually. It's a good tip.

Yeah, good point - not sure if a power-button-long-hold hard reset would be the equivalent on a Nook or not. If it is only a battery pull that would do it, then you would indeed need a screwdriver and a little bit of masochism for that to be a problem.
EDIT: the long power button hold reset DOES make the free app lose the setting
If anyone's interested in getting the density more like the Galaxy Tab's without having an ugly, cut-off looking status bar in portrait mode (with a couple sacrifices), here's a little work-around I came up with (if you're using softkeys mapped to double-tap of home button, this isn't for you):
1. Set density to 250 using the build.prop editing method. Reboot.
2. Get a market app called HelloStatusBar.
3. Get a market app called QuickLaunch. Open it and set home button double-tap to open HelloStatusBar.
You'll lose your status bar clock, and it'll look ugly with wifi off, but with wifi on, it'll be nice and clean like the pic below:
Your Notifications will be gone, but now you can double-tap home to bring them up:

I'm not familiar with the paid version, so I can't really comment on that.
That's ADW EX launcher, with the browser, email, and app drawer icons from the Galaxy Tab. Not sure if Samsung's launcher icons are open source, so I won't post them (PM'd). . .
So wait the galaxy tab comes stock with the screen virtualized to be a different resolution than it actually is?
adwlauncher ex has adjustable icon sizes. You can adjust so icons are a nice size and not interfere with the dock. As if you needed another reason for ex!

I am using LCD Density Changer at 190. Works great.
I manually changed mine to 141, an opposite reaction to many. By doing this I can get 4-5 items in the notification area on the right and things are not too small on the screen.

In the Market.
FYI, the free app works fine with CM7, with none of the problems described by OP, so you can use whatever looks right to you.
I am liking 200, because it makes the back arrow easier to press !
How do I turn my Z into an Ultra Z ? Apps and launcher etc. will eventually be updated but what I would like is the resolution change so the icons and the launch bar look the same as the Ultra, 7 icons on the bottom etc., generally smaller stuff all round. It is just a simple matter of changing the DPI or is there more to it ?
So going from this -

"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
To this -
Ultra has a DPI of 320, vs 480 of the Z. So start there.
Although changing the DPI of the device messes up with some of the stock apps. Launcher dock becomes wicked, Walkman app too, dialer gets off centre, and some other stuff.
The simplest way would be using an alternative launcher such as Nova launcher. The paid for version would at least allow you to add more columns and rows so you get the dock effect you are after. Under look and feel you can also alter the size of all your icons (which includes your app drawer) and alter the amount of apps in the drawer to achieve a similar effect. Might not be exactly what you want but the effect might be similar and relatively painless.

Does the launcher just change into the one from the Z Ultra ? Number and size of icons ? Does the Settings menu etc all change with this too ? What stock items were badly affected ?

Almost everything - the google now quick launch launches off to the right a little...
Ok, been using this Mod for the day now, BEST MOD EVER! it's like having a phablet in a phone, I can see a lot more, it really shows of the screen!
Only noticed 2 little things, the Google Now button is a little off to the right and the camera back/home/settings (the 3 large dots) don't match the positions when woken.
Other than that it's like a new device! Smaller home keys and smaller status bar means more room for everything else!

OK, so I love changing the DPI of my phone and apps. so i thought why not share what I know with others.
These are the apps that I feel are needed to be changed , so if you think i missed one just tell me and I'll add it.
another note i don't use the touchwiz launcher and different roms can use one that's modded.
of course your phone needs to be ROOTED
you can use whatever app you like to change your DPI, I used xposed app settings and would suggest the same
NOTE 4 default DPI is 640
In xposed app settings to change your system DPI you turn on
android system & system ui
and change it to your desired DPI (320 for me).
(you can also change it using the build.prop)
I guess its necessary to say this:
IF YOU CHANGE YOUR DPI IN ANY WAY, DO AS STATED BELOW
These apps you will need to change back to stock: 640
camera
camera test
com.sec.android.gallery3d.panorama360view
com.sec.android.ofviewer
com.sec.android.sviewcover
com.sec.phone
contacts
gallery
incallui
com.android.mms
phone
photo studio
s health
samsung camera filter
touchwiz home
video trimmer
not changing some can cause it to not function properly or FC
These setting are recommended if you use them:
S-Voice
- you don't have to change the dpi to stock unless you want to but if you get a FC change the screen dp to 480x854
Samsung Keyboard
- you can leave it the same as your new DPI or change it to stock DPI if the secondary icons alignment bothers you, check the box 'apply res to widgets',
Lockscreen (com.android.keyguard)
- you don't have to change this one back to stock but if you use lockscreen security the bottom will look weird
- to change it to stock, enter the stock DPI (640) and check the box 'apply res to widgets'. A reboot will be requried
Smart Remote
-change dpi back to stock and change screen dp to 320x480
Calendar
-if you use it I recommend you change it back to stock because the on screen notification size will be off
Wink app
-it will think your using a tablet and causes issues so change to stock
Swiftkey
-resize using keyboards builtin resizer
PLEASE DON'T FORGET TO HIT SAVE ON EACH ONE AND REBOOT YOUR PHONE AFTER
IF I MISSED ANYTHING OR YOU WANT ANYTHING ADDED PLEASE TELL ME
THIS ARE MY PERSONAL SETTINGS AND IF YOU CHOOSE TO DO THE SAME ITS AT YOU OWN FREE WILL

Thanks for the guide bro!
Thanks for this. 320DPI is too small for my ageing eyesight but 500DPI makes the phone already much more useable.
What is the app or process for the recent app list (long press Home)? This is now narrow and I would like it to fill the width of the screen.
You also need to reset KeyguardTestActivity to stock DPI and check the 'apply to widgets' box. That will sort out the lockscreen
Edit: I see you already mention this, so please ignore
