iPhone X Home / Multitask gesture-like gestures on Android? - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

For the longest time, I've had the nav bar hidden and simply swiped up to do the various things on it, but after seeing how simple the iPhone X's gestures are, I really became interested in similar gestures on Android.
On the 3T that I have now, obviously it wouldn't make sense, but when the Note 8 finally arrives, I would love to be able to swipe up to go home, or up and right for the recents, and then some other gesture to go back (maybe a swipe right, or force touch the home button?)
With the Note 8's force touch home button, I really don't think there's a need to actually see a nav bar.
Any suggestions or thoughts?

Ever heard of meizu. Been doing this for years.
Should be possible

Nova launcher

I also agree, Nova Launcher

a few options.
i also use Nova Prime launcher for certain
gestures, but you can only use these gestures
when on desktop pages of Nova and not eg in an App or settings of device.
Then also Bixby voice,
can do quite a few of these commands. Actually for me, using short voice commands is just as good as a gesture.
Go back, Go Homescreen, Take screenshot, Open
Settings
So i combine a few of Nova Prime gestures with Bixby voice.
Nova Prime eg. Double tap... to sleep
One swipe down..... show quick settings, notifications.
Pinch out..... Recent app
(If you on desktop / Homepages)
In an 3rd party app or setting i use Bixby. commands.
eg... turn screen off.
Show.....
Notification /quick settings. /recent apps
Go Hompage....
... take screenshot.

That's iPhone for You, Simple :laugh:
Always assume anything an iPhone releases as new it's been possible for Android years before hand.
That's always the case!

This not fully gesture based but I use LMT. Swipe from left side or right side to expose LMT and I have setup button for back, home, recent apps, and drop notifications. There are other commands you can add.

How to Use Gestures on iPhone X without Home Button
I was searching on Google and got useful solution, How to Use Gestures on iPhone X without Home Button: howtoisolve.com/use-gestures-on-iphone-x/

The Oppo R11s Plus has this and it works great. Don't know if you can port this to another Android phone?
https://m.gsmarena.com/oppo_r11s-review-1696p4.php

Xposed edge http://repo.xposed.info/module/com.jozein.xedge
the possibilities...
its almost frightening!

What I use is LMT and Nav bar remover. With LMT I set up ISAS to go home when swiping up in the middle, go to recent when swiping up from the right and back when swiping up from the left hand side.

all in one gesture does the work too

Xposed edge pro app
That application will allow you to achieve
That. Remember to hide the navigation bar of course by any app.

installed Gesture shortcuts on my Gear which provides an easy way to launch apps by just drawing on the screen. I use to quickly bring up most commonly used apps like Easy Tether, BlueGPS, S-Voice etc..or make a quick phone call to someone. Now idon't have to scroll through the app drawer.

This app is amazing. Features predefined gesture paths (up, left, right etc.) and custom ones. It's one of my main reasons to root an Android device, just rocks:

Can I get longpress actions on apps on stock launcher like they were on nougat?

Like the thread suggests I upgraded to oreo and I regret it. The feature that I miss the most from nougat was longpressing on apps on the stock launcher and getting that app info action. I use fenix instead of the official twitter client and also some games, after some time they start acting up and when I force close them and delete their cache they work fine.
Now on nougat it was a simple longpress on the app you wanted and you could go to app info immediately. On oreo they changed it to some retarded options like select items, home screen and uninstall. So now I have to go to settings, apps wait for the list of apps to load and find the app and only then can I force stop it and clear the app's cache. Is there a way to get app info on longpress in the stock launcher or do I have to switch to another launcher like nova to get this functionality back?
Thx
Isn't this what you are referring to? 'force touch' actions work fine on Oreo.

Yup that's exactly what I'm referring to. In nougat when you did a longpress you had an option called "app info" but they removed it in Oreo (or I can't find the option to toggle it back on).
So for example in nougat let's say I'd long press on the playstore and I went to app info. It would take me to this screen
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Now in Oreo if I want to get to the app info of the playstore I have to go to settings, then apps, then wait for the list of all apps to load, then find the app that I need.
It was a decent "shortcut" that worked great on nougat, but they removed it in Oreo. Most of the other launchers have that option, but since I didn't root this device I kind of got used to the stock launcher (ex touchwiz) so I'd prefer to stick with it. Just was wondering if there's a way to add that option.
I get what you mean now. Tbh i really doubt this feature will ever be re-added in future firmwares given how few people even noticed this was gone.
Yeah I figured if they took a feature out there won't be a way to get it back other than a 3rd party app.
Thx for the replies, guess it's nova launcher for me now
Shame. I loved that feature.

Yeah I know, I've been using nova for years back on my nexus 6p, and galaxy s3 before that. It's just retarded that in 2018 you can't have that option on a stock launcher. What's worse it was in there, and they removed it for no good reason. Oh well

App switcher bug & Poorly designed navigation bar?

I've been using the Mate 20 for the past 24hours, being first time Huawei/EMUI user, there are some weird experiences going on.
1. Bug - App switcher:
Open recent apps, I'm not able to switch apps by clicking the partially visible adjacent apps (will go to home screen)
The only way to switch apps is by scrolling to the desired app and make sure it shows at the middle of the screen, then click it.
2. Navigation Bar Experience - EMUI? Android 9? :
The navigation keys' positioning is kinda bad. The icons are too packed at the middle of the screen, instead they should be placed more evenly, and the clickable areas should be widen. (I drawn an image below to better explain this)
I'm not sure this is an EMUI thing or Android Pie thing? How to make a suggestion to Huawei?

It's controlled by Huawei, btw it's shifted like that because there's a "rotate" button that appears on the nav bar when you tilt your phone and auto rotate is off, you can see it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWOp1b-5thQ

I see. But that is rarely used. It shouldn't affect the main navigation keys that are the basic function of a phone.

Weird issue with Gboard: wrong double tapping

Hi guys, I'm wondering if someone else is having this issue.
I have an S10+, navigation with gestures activated and no indicators.
The thing is when I use Gboard and I type the buttons on the bottom row (like the , for example) I get double taps. Only if I type them from the bottom of the button.
So I get ,, instead of , or two spaces instead of one. It's annoying..
I haven't detected this issue with any other app.
I have not tried gboard or swift in years because you cannot get rid of the toolbar. I only like letters and numbers when typing and dont use emoji's. Do either of them support to hide the toolbar yet and look like this?

I use the Google keyboard and I tried the stock gestures, ended up going with fluid navigation gestures instead. Works much better in my opinion.

If by "toolbar" you mean this (picture 1) then yes, it can be removed (picture 2). Just turn off "Show suggestion strip" in the menu (picture 3). You can also disable the Emojis from gboard's settings as well.
Am I the only one with this issue? Can someone try Gboard with no nav bar and no hints and see if this happens?
I'm using google zhuying keyboard, which is like the older version of gboard for taiwanese people.
I don't see any problems.
I would suggest trying a different keyboard and if it happens
It only happens with Gboard. But I like Gboard, this is the only issue I have with it.
Just figured out this also happens with SwiftKey. No one else is having this?

Try fluid navigation gestures. I use Google keyboard and FNG without any issues.
I'm using SwiftKey beta and creating an empty space under the keyboard. It was the only solution.

Not having that experience. So it should also work for you.

Do you use the gesture navigation or the button navigation as I don't see the issue with the button navigation
What are the home button settings you have for Nova ?
Any battery optimization setting you have for Nova , Animation speed or disable

I use the gesture navigation. I do not have any widgets in my homescreen (tried removing those?)
Note that Nova battery says Always ask, but when i click on it it says don't optimise (my actual choice)
Thank you
I have contacted Nova launcher about this and I was shocked by the response below :
Thank you for contacting Nova Launcher support. Below is a lot of information that we encourage you to read completely as it will answer your questions or other questions you might have related to the full system gestures in Android 10, Android 11, Android 12 and for the foreseeable future.
It doesn't matter what 3rd party launcher or version of any 3rd party launcher you use, it matters what your system/OEM does. If your system doesn't allow gesture navigation to work with 3rd party launchers, then no version of Nova will change that in any way. If it works inconsistently with 3rd party launchers, no version of Nova will change that either.
A great source of information can be found via this article https://www.xda-developers.com/third-party-launchers-animation-pixel-phones/. by Mishaal Rahman with input from Kevin Barry, the developer of Nova Launcher: Here's why Nova Launcher works better on Google Pixel phones (xda-developers.com)
Notable issues with gestures on third party launchers include, but not limited to:
• Close all/Clear app button not appearing(scroll all the way to verify it's not there)
• Not being able to tap icons for a short time after returning to the home screen
• Animations not being as fluid as expected
• Home screen icons flashing
• Home screen redraws
Please understand, there is absolutely nothing Nova can do to fix or change this in any way! Contact Google or your device OEM directly with these issues as Nova has absolutely no control over it whatsoever.
NOTE: These are system gestures only and are not related to Nova's personal gestures that you will find via Nova Settings -> Gestures & Inputs.
Use 3-Button Navigation
If you wish to avoid all of the above issues or any others that you might experience while using system gestures, we strongly urge and suggest that you use 3-button navigation that Android has had for years and that simply works. It allows you to use your favorite apps, especially any 3rd party launcher such as Nova, without issues like system gestures provide. Google has no plans to our knowledge to get rid of 3-button navigation in any way which means you can use your device like you have in the past without having to worry about the issues that system gestures provide.
As stated before, full system gestures are completely controlled by Android and are not something a launcher can just suddenly add support for or change in any way. When using gestures with Action Launcher, you'll quickly notice that the experience has just as many issues as it does with Nova or any other 3rd party launcher, reiterating the point that it is not something that any third party launcher can
