I must be missing something but I can't get notifications sounds from the phone, only the stock ones. Been everywhere I know to look on my note 5 and coming up blank.
Ringtone was no problem but there has to be a way to get notification sound of my choosing.
Thanks in advance

When you go to your ringtones, do you see a pop-up at bottom asking you to select media storage or a Sep app? Media storage holds anything you've custom added along with stock.
Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk
Just open audio, find ur song ore all of them by long pressing on it. Then at right up corner press menu- copy-internal storage- notifications- and vuola, all done.
Your instructions above are only for ringtones, they don't allow you to add your own sound to messages or other notifications on the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.
Insert an SD Card with your custom sounds. The folders should be in the root directory and named accordingly. I personally moved the contents of each one of these folders to the internal memory of the corresponding folders.

Follow these steps:
-Go to My files
-Go to internal Storage
-3 dots in top right, click "Create folder"- Name folder "Media"
-Open newly created "Media" folder, click 3 dots in top right, click "Create folder"- Name folder "Notifications".
-Move any sounds or music you would like to use into this "Notifications" folder and it will show up in the list now.
Credit goes to Jimmy is Promo on youtube. I only typed it because I literally just did this because I was having the same issue.

Caveat: the name of the sound turns up on the list using the meta tag information, no meta tag info will mean it turns up simply as sound (of which you may end up with multiple 'sound' entries). Creating the same folders on the SD card will also work.
edit: i dont think the Media folder is required, just the Notifications folder on the root off internal storage or sd card

My gallery is picking up every single folder that I have with images in it for some reason. I define the folder as hidden but it still picks it up. Even when moving pictures from one folder to another, it sometimes takes days to see the change in the gallery, even after media scans...
I am running Cognition v3.02, could this be a problem with my rom?

1. If u want no app to pick up media from any folder, create an empty file in it and name it ".nomedia".
2. If u want gallery only not to pick, rename the folder to start with a ".".gallery skips looking into folders beginning with a ".".
If u put the .nomedia file it wont be picked by any app, not just gallery.

Make a text file, rename it to .nomedia and place it in any folder you don't want scanned by media scanner.
I see some 1 near me to it
I already renamed the folders that I didn't want it to find and put a "." In front of it, but it finds them anyway.
Ill try the .nomedia thing and see if it works

This is getting ridiculous... I even tried downloading an app meant to hide files from the gallery, but nothing is working.
Does anyone have a solution?

I believe you misunderstood. You don't put the files IN the .nomedia folder, you go to the location where the files are and make a .nomedia folder in there.
For example, say you have some icons in a folder that is named "icons". Us My Files or Astro to open that folder so you can see all those files, press the menu button, create new folder, name it ".nomedia" without quotes, rescan.
That should take care of it. When you're done, it should be:
.nomedia(folder with nothing in it!)
image.jpeg
image.png
song.mp3
This screenshot is an example of what it should look like.
And if you just have certain pictures or files or icons that you don't want to show up, but are in the same folder, easiest way to do it is to create a new folder and move all files that you don't want visible into that folder, and within that folder make a .nomedia folder and rescan.

Lagfix fixes this up quite a bit! Also, depends on the r/w speed of your SD card I believe. Mine is a Class 2 and it is so slow, so now I put all Media on my Internal SD now. External is for all my music.

are you creating a blank file with no extension called .nomedia and placing it inside each folder where pics exist you dont want in the gallery?

Yes. I'm starting to think my gallery is just messed up. The pictures I hide show up but if I try and view them it shows a blank screen for most of them.

Am I missing something? Can I not add a custom right tone to a contact? I just switched over from my Droid X today and I came across this issue.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using Tapatalk
I believe the way to do it is if you open the Contacts app then click on the contact and when it shows their info, hit the menu key then select options and it should then give you the option to set a custom ringtone for that contact.
I've tried that but the only choices that are available are the stock ringtones that came with the phone I'd like to use an actual song from my music library as that contacts ringtone.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using Tapatalk
I noticed the same thing! I like to have different songs for different people, i don't want to be limited to the lame generic ringtones, i want Beck and Death Weather and QoTSA!
I just upgraded from a Droid X today and I able able to add custom ringtones to contacts then now on DB it doesn't seem to give you an option to do that I'm surprised

Might try adding the music files to a folder named "Ringtones" on the sd card. It worked for my portal 2 ringtones.

Files placed into: /Internal phone storage/media/audio/ringtones are usable as ringtones. If the folders already exist, just move your files there. If the folders aren't already there, you can use the pre-installed Files application to create them. From with the app, click Menu then New Folder.
Then do this keeping in mind that it needs to be done from the View Contact screen, not the Edit Contact screen:

I figured it out: I opened the music app then long pressed the song I wanted as a ring tone. The go to the contact select options and when the list of ring tones opens looks for the song title and hi-light the song done. Thanks to all of you for helping!!!!

I had some songs and alert tones that I put on the external SD card, and the system found them and added them to my list of available ring tones without me having to do anything.
have had no issues with custom ring tones and alerts.
Thanks. That also worked for the notification ringtone.

Check out "Rings Extended" in the app market. Once installed it operates in the background. Assign a ringtone as normal, but when you do you get the option to use Rings Extended. It will let you choose any music on your phone.
So I have this strange problem that is causing my Ringtones not to work.
I go into settings >> sound >> and click to select the default ringtone.
In there some of my Ringtones are listed 3 times.
These are MP3's that I have on my Ext SDcard in a drirectory.
If when I am trying to select the ringtone, I select the first 2 of the 3 of any particular ringtone, the "preview" does not work at all. The 3rd version of the ringtone works with the preview but the phone won't work with it.
I select the thrid version and close settings and try to call my phone. Only vibration. I look back in the settings and the first entry is selected.
So I took out my ext sdcard and only 2 versions of the file name show up now and neither of those will play, preview, or work.
I downloaded Rescan Media Root and rescanned media but nothing gets rid of these Ghost entries.
Any ideas?
The built in phone ringtones are entered only once and they work.
Try removing the ext. sd card and rebooting the phone. Also while it is removed, go to settings and then applications and clear data of the Music Player app and Media Storage. You can find them under the "All" tab in applications manager.

Create a "Ringtones" folder in your internal memory and place whatever you want to use as your ringtone there. It will automatically show up at the bottom of the list without needing to push the music symbol.

Maybe something with the updated walkman application?
Remove the update if you have it or update the app if you didn't already.

Indeed you are correct my friend, i decided to re flash to stock and re root, after deleting all the bloatware individually i did find that walkman was the suspect, i have kept the app on my phone for now but would like to know if there is a work around as i dont use the walkman app, regards.
So I had a rooted Galaxy Nexus. I'd just have just copied/pasted into the media folders previously. Now, the ringtone and notification is on my phone but not showing in the menu to select ringtones.
Am I just being stupid?
