I've only had this device for 4-5 days now. My eyes have been really sore for the past 2 days now. I'm not sure if this is because of the Iris scanner or the Gear VR. Anyone else having the same problem?
How much time have you spent with the Gear VR? Does the problem stop when you put the phone down for a while?
In any event, persistent eye soreness should be diagnosed by a doctor, not by a cell phone forum.
While you wait for your optometrist appointment, have you tried using the blue light filter setting in your pull down menu?
Have you, by chance, suffered any type of head injury (mild or moderate)? Recent change in vision or new optical prescription? Things to consider.
This could be indicative of something far more important than a Note 8, so please do see an Optometrist.

I noticed some discomfort after using the VR....it does say to limit your usage, especially when starting out.

Yeah those warnings exist for our protection fortunately. They other issue op could be having is from the device not finished learning brightness preferences as yet. I had to retrain mine negate for whatever reason, it thought I looked to be blinded!!!?

It just comes and goes randomly putting the phone down doesn't seem to make a difference that much to me. I think it might be related to the iris scanner though. I've heard some people had problems with it on the S8 as well. Haven't used the Gear VR that much. 4-5 times, half an hour each time.
Bet its the VR...I struggle with this. I'm not sure what impact the Iris scanner might have but its not a bright light so can't imagine it causes too much harm. VR will tire your eyes especially after 30 mins. I watched a live SpaceX rocket launch and had to sit for a few mins after to recover.

You're not alone apparently. I stay away from shining even small amounts of infrared lights in my eyes. It's not with the small chance of damage to me.
How does the amount of IR exposure from a few seconds of iris-scanning compare to the amount of IR exposure from a few seconds of walking outdoors?

One is artificial, the other is natural. It may be a tiny risk, but Samsung even provides a warning about it when you activate it. My eye sight is just too important to me to risk it with new technology even if the risks are miniscule.
Also, it is the issue of the repeated exposure over a period of time. How many times do you unlock your phone a day? I think that is the concerning aspect in my eyes. Of course an unlock or two will not create eye damage. However, who has done the studies proving that repetitive direct eye exposure to IR lights are benign to eye health? The studies just aren't there.
Get Rid of Sore Eyes
If you have sore eyes then do not worry just try these below-mentioned home remedies. They are very easy to apply and you can follow these remedies for sore eyes treatments:
• Apply Slices of Cucumber: First of all, soak cucumber slices in ice cold water for not more than 10 minutes and then you can put those cucumber slices on your closed eyelids for next other 10 minutes.
• Apply Cold Bread: Get two loaves of cold bread and then place them on both the eyes. You can get rid of itchy eyes and eyelid inflammation as well with this remedy.
• Apply Slices of Potatoes: Place a piece of grated potato on your eyes for not more than 20 minutes. You can repeat this remedy for regular 4 to 5 nights to get better results.
Try all these home remedies and get rid of sore eyes at home with an ease. Know more at: Eyelidslift.com
Seems like you maybe sensitive to the infared light spectrum used by the iris scanner. I would recommend that you disable iris scanning and use the fingerprint scanner instead.
I don't use Gear VR or the iris scanner and my eyes are fine. I am a heavy user too, with one full battery depletion per day.
I don't have an issue with the iris scanner. I keep the phone about a foot away when I do the iris unlock (both eyes in the 2 circles).
I primarily use my fingerprint, then PIN code, but I rely on iris unlock if my hands are sticky or dirty.

It's on auto and usually too dim to be honest, but I've been having around 6-6:30 SoT recently anyways. Black themes from substratum help a lot too.

This looks cool. Hard to tell exactly but looks like we can get this from Milk Store (still weirdest branding ever) from Feb 27th through March 1st. I'll be curious to see if they have solved the focus issues with 360 video. If so awesome.

What we really need is a first person shooter with team play and the graphics quality of Herobound. That would be amazing. Also figure out how to stop this overheating. Tried adjusting settings using Synapse as recommended for the AEL kernel but overheating just the same. Must have wrong settings. I used those recommended for Balanced. If anyone knows the correct settings I'd appreciate it.

Hi Mitchellvi,
I've seen that you constantly talk about how badly out-of-focus the 360 videos are. Quite honestly I don't see that problem on mine. The only thing I see on some scenes of the 360 videos are a few of the image seams that conform the 360 video image, but the video is very clear and detailed to me.
I too would like to see a 1st person shooter (with multiplayer) with HeroBound kind of graphics. But I think that unless Samsung/Oculus fixes the overheating issues, it would be near impossible.
I also tweaked my CPU and GPU speeds, underclocking and undervolting without any noticeable improvements. The only thing that seems to be working is to use the Note's Power Save Mode at the cost of some minor stuttering on some games and apps. So instead of say 20 minutes of use, I can almost double the time before it prompts to let it cool down.
Cheers!

If beauty were ever in the eye of the beholder, it is with the GVR. Because of the idiosyncrasies of how each individual's eyes focus at such a close distance (something nature never intended them to do), there really is no one right answer when it comes to what people experience. However, focus on 360 videos does seem to be an issue shared by many. I envy you that it is not for you.
You begin to understand the difficulty in designing a one-size-fits-all VR device. They are forced to design for the mean and thus insure than pretty much everyone will be slightly disappointed with one thing or another. Assuming VR remains with the "lense and screen" format (and corneal projection as in the Glyph does not replace it), I see the day coming where you will go to the optometrist to get a VR prescription and order custom lenses just for you.
I'm going to stop by the store today and see if I can find a small chill-pack which would fit inside the GVR cover (perhaps attached with velcro tape). That way it would not touch the phone creating condensation issues (hopefully) and it would keep things cool for gaming.
Worth a shot.
I also have a steel wool heat sync idea I've created a thread about.

Steel wool is fail as there is not enough surface area contact to wick off heat. Chill packs succeeded but recommend fridged instead of frozen to prevent fogging.
'Clearer Photos' - written on the side of the box. The biggest hype surrounding the OnePlus 5 has been about the camera. On paper the specs look great, 'benchmark' photos and scores look good too. But in real world usage it's a big Fail. This is why..
All else being equal, more mega pixels means lower quality images. This may be a surprise to some. This is the reason. More pixels on a sensor means each pixel is smaller. Which means over the same time period less light is recorded on each pixel. To solve this problem there are two solutions. 1) Hold the shutter open longer to capture more light. Longer shutter times causes blurring and softness if any movement is present. 2) Increase the amplification from the sensor (ISO). This causes noise and degrades the image. The result is lower quality photos.
So why have a high Megapixel count? Resolution. In the early days of digital photography the low resolution from cameras was a limiting factor and you could easily see the pixels if you zoomed in. 1.3MP for example is 1280x1200 pixels. That's not going to look great on a high resolution screen or blown up. So what about the 20MP sensor in the OnePlus 5? Well that's 3'600x5'400 pixels! This is only useful if you're printing images out in a large poster size. With the tiny sensors in a mobile phone you'll only be able to produce good quality images at this resolution if there's tons of light and the scene is still.
Here's a newsflash for OnePlus: We don't use our mobile phones to take photos of trees in the sun (unless you're a phone reviewer). We use our phones to take photos of family, friends, pets, activities, often inside or at night and other low light scenarios and we post them on Facebook and Instagram.
We need in focus, non blurred, 'Clearer' photos that will mostly be viewed on other phones. This translates to phones with good low light performance with fast auto-focus. We don't need or want 20MP degrading that quality. We also need a better auto-focus system. Have a look at the last couple generations of the Samsung Galaxy to see how it should be done.
This is why the OnePlus 5 camera fails in real life usage and is a disappointment. Please listen OnePlus. Look at what the other manufacturers are doing and get it right on the OnePlus 6.
surprising post perhaps dual camera understanding is requiredbefore writting so much about powerful dual camera phone
Reading this was such a waste of time
Perfect summary of whats going on. Only god knows what was going on in OP's marketeers. "Clearer photos" my ***!
I am so much disappoint!
Edit: The sad thing is that I even think (then again, I'm an idiot..) their strategy can make sense. Yes, they could have put ONE sensor in there that yields better results than the current setup. But having TWO cameras is the new trend and, thus, is way easier to market. Even the new Samsung Note will feature two sensors. So OP had to choose between a better camera and less revenue or a worse camera and more revenue.
Unfortunately they picked the latter.
How many threads are going to be create just to talk about camera ?
As already said in others threads, people expected a perfect DSLR with 40Mpx and a perfect night quality image. Come on are you serious ? This is marketing people, wake up, think with your brain sometime please.

Ok, creating an other topic was maybe useless but... The fact is that at the moment, the camera is very disappointing, to say the least. Especially when the device was marketed as the new camera standard, "clearer photos" etc.
I think nobody was expecting a DSLR camera, but maybe more than the overly washed, grainy or over saturated and sharpened shots that it actually produces. C'mon, I upgraded from an old Nexus 5 and expected a dramatic improvement in the camera quality. I am delighted to say this is not the case.
The big question now is : will these issues be software fixable ?

If I'm good, each iteration of OnePlus device get a better camera with software update.
You are probably right but there are things you can accept when you pay 300$ that you can not accept anymore when you pay 550$. Rising the price also means raising the expectations.
Please will people stop making random rant posts and freaking out?!
The phone has been released for a week now and isn't even globally available yet.
There's been 3 software updates already to fix issues.
Just wait about a month and then if it's still crap you can complain.
The problem is that in many countries, you can freely return you device within 14 days after you purchased it. So waiting one Month with nothing but hopes and wishes is a costly option.

Nonsense. A fast SOC and lots of RAM doesn't make up for fake promises of a great camera and lies about benchmarks, poor design, little features etc. Give OP credit when they deserve it and heat when they don't. The OP5 is a big let down, they need to sort themselves out.

Is there a way to get the screen to light up when in a dark room to help with intelligent scan?

Iris scan has worked great even in the dark for me. Or are you using facelock?
Why don't you just turn off keyboard clicks?
Dunno why I just like the keyboard clicks.
Definitely missing the alert slider from my OnePlus.
I'm using intelligent scan which uses both and it seems to strughle

I would test your Iris scanner more to make sure not defective. Doesn't it use IR so light is less of an issue. I don't know if this matter but is the glass clean over your scanner?

I don't think that lighting up screen will help with intelligent scan Isn't it?
Might be you want to light up the room instead?
Anyway, as someone has said, intelligent scan works well in the dark room by iris scanner (of course you need remove your glasses so that iris scanner can recognize your eyes).
So you don't need to light up screen nor the room to help with intelligent scan.
Lol. I did not mention this yesterday but Iris scan worked with my sunglasses on during the day. I just tried and it still dark at night. I could see my eyes on the screen and it still unlocked. So light isn't an issue.
And to the poster that mentioned lighting up the room is not necessary. Lighting up the screen wild give more light to his face.
But anyways, light should not be an issue. I have confirmed it works through polarized Bolle sunglasses in the light and the dark.

polarized Oakley's here. it uses infrared so regular light is meaningless. i believe intelligence scan is a combo but fails over to either method if one of the two is not available.
surprisingly working very well. couldn't be happier. was kind of expecting lag and just general dodgyness.

Yes. Quite surprised how well it works. I have accidentally unlocked my phone with Iris scanning because it was so fast.
It is really fast but when in bed at night doesn't read through my glasses. But if I take them off I can't see hahaha. I thought if the screen brightened up in low light situations like my Oneplus 5 does thought it would help

Actually, mass production usually aims for less than 1% failure rate, so I'm pretty confident you got one of those >1%.
Considering YOU are the only one complaining, then yes, you're probably one unlucky person.
If you were talking about a Google Pixel 2/3, then yes, you're likely to have a **** screen, because that's how they are. Samsung screens aren't like that at all - the Note 9 has one of, if not THE best screen available on any phone.

I am pretty sure they will agree to change it + the chances to draw again a problematic display are really slim. Sadly some do have such a problem and actually I saw a lot worse on the xda forums. Return it for exchange is my advice.
Look in my thread history. I made threads about Samsung display uniformity issues since Note3!
It got better over the years, but still I estimate only 10-30% of all Amoled screens are perfect.
Samsung makes things right in terms of quality management, because most customers do not notice this flaw, but if you are sensible to it, it's hard to ignore!
in my threads I also explained the reason for this, which is how amoled screens are produced. they are cut out of wafers after lithography. only devices cut out of the center of the wafer have almost uniform screens. the more from a side your screen has been cut out, the worse the screen quality will be.

I think it has improved a lot since a couple of years. Before that, I used to swap my Samsung phones once or twice to get a decent one.
But the last 4 or 5 phones I bought, all with Samsung screens, were all perfect.
That includes Pixel 2 (not XL), Note 9, S8+, P20 Pro, etc....
Either I got extremely lucky to get as many perfect screens in a row, or they really improved things. Now I think it will happen to me again to have a bad one, but I'm not as nervous anymore. It's not a lottery anymore.
My Note 9 in particular is extremely impressive with a perfect screen. Perfect whites, no uniformity problem with any shades of grey at any brightness. Pure oled bliss.
BUT, I've had so many problems before that I'll ALWAYS be a little nervous before unboxing an oled screen smartphone. I've been burned too many times with crappy panels.
Let me tell you I was extremely nervous the day I bought my LG Oled 4K TV 55"..... Thousands of dollars thrown at an Oled panel lottery.... I was lucky this time again
Times are changing.
Okay so I got another note 9 and has this issue too but in different spot. Also checked one more piece in samsung store...same.
So I think almost everyone has this uneven screen but maybe some of you have less sensitive eyes or just don't want to see this problem

So I think almost everyone has this uneven screen but maybe some of you have less sensitive eyes or just don't want to see this problem

So my question is, does this affect your use of the device? Is it causing wear and tear on you vision? Or is it just an OCD/OCPD effect?
To me personally, stuff like this is pointless to have an issue with even on a phone that costs $1000. Unless it's to the point where you can't use the device because you see the defect on everything.
To another comment I saw that included the word "Perfect," NOTHING is perfect, and there will never be such a thing that could be perfect because of our human definition of what perfection is. It's good to strive for Better, but it's pointless to strive for Perfection.
Btw, I did download the Pic and tested it on my Note 9 and my wife's Note 8, and the uniformity is affected on both devices. I also looked at the image on my 4K TVs and my LCD monitors and the effect is there. Are you sure the image itself is uniform?

Perfect screens exist. I have some. I have perfect eyesight. I was a combat helicopter pilot in the french army. I know what to look for. If it is there I see it. If it is not, I don't. It's a fact. It's science. Not some voodoo magic wishful thinking.
I've had terrible screens. I've had some perfect. Nowadays I get more good ones than bad.
Bad ones still exist, but it my opinion that they are less and less common.
Against clear backgrounds you won't see much apart from a slight shift in color temperature.
Against dark grey at indoor brightness you can have incredible differences between some parts of the screen.
If you use a dark theme (not black), you will see it all the time.
Does it prevents you from using the phone ? No of course not.
Does it suck on a 1000 dollars phone ? Yes.
Some people are insensitive to that kind of thing. Good for them.
It's not an OCD. It's the will to have a good looking screen.
I like good looking women. I don't think it's an OCD. I know what I want, that's all. And I want the best. Nothing less.
If you want to settle with average, good for you.

I literally stopped reading at "Perfect eyesight." And then I went back and read your reply...and I still stopped at perfect eyesight. I wish I was as perfect as you man. For real...???

You do know that you have to have a perfect eyesight to be a combat pilot, do you ?
Acuity, color, contrast, night vision, side vision, field of view, and much more. Everything is tested BEFORE you're even allowed to go forward in the selection process.
Most people fail those tests. That's sad but that's life.
As a side note, you don't have to have perfect vision to see those screen problems.
They can be very obvious to anybody open minded enough.
Close minded people though, will always be impervious to such matter.

You literally missed the most important part of my original post. That's why I stopped reading your post.
And yes I do know you have to have "Perfect" eyesight to join some military air forces.?
And I hope you aren't calling me closed minded. I never said someone has to have perfect eyesight to see the differences of the pixels in the image.
Anyways, I'm done with this. Quite pointless now.??
Hello,
I have problems with using smartphones because of an neurological illness which makes me very light sensitive. So I might ask some questions related to display technologies, screen dimming and phone models, in search of a solution for my problem.
I used to be a programmer in the past, but long time ago. This forum was recommended to me in a Java forum.
Hello to everyone, nice to meet you.
Welcome to XDA
May I ask specifically what is the issue ie epilepsy, migraines etc?
It may not just be brightness but how the light is modulated. OLEDs are typically using duty cycle modulation for dimming. Some allow for current dimming.
LCDs typically use current dimming.
The duty cycle dimming can be irritating to some.
Controlling the room's ambient light levels may be helpful to you. Taking frequent breaks to look at objects further away to reduce eyestrain.
Using system dark mode greatly reduces overall light output. Using dark custom color wallpaper and icons do too.
Disabling all animations may be helpful... it also speeds up the system slightly.
Try using manual brightness control, it can reduce the strain and allow you to chose the best viewing intensity.
Getting rid of as many white icons can help reduce the overall things glaring at you.
Samsung phones have the most customization for this.

Thanks, it's chronic fatigue syndrome (not sure as there is no biomarker / laboratory test for this illness due to a lack of research, but that's what doctors told me).

I'm sure it's the brightness as I have problems with any kind of displays and light sources: computers, TVs, beamers etc.
I also need to wear sunglasses outside more often than normal people do.

Actually I wanted to ask about OLED and LCD phones. I was able to use a Samsung Galaxy S3 mini with manual brightness control fully turned down and additionally with a screen dimmer app, but it is getting too old now. So I bought an A12 but couldn't bear the light, even not with the manual brightness control turned fully down and an additional screen dimmer app. In the Play Store somebody writes that screen dimmer apps would make the liquid crystal layer of an LCD darker, but not reduce the light emitted by the lamps below. So it would filter away some of the light.
I wonder how a screen dimmer app works on an OLED screen as there is only one layer. Does it reduce the amount of light right from the start? That could explain why I could deal with the (screen dimmed) S3 mini (OLED display) and not with the (screen dimmed) A12 (IPS = LCD). Besides the different display sizes.

I would like to use a messenger app which has no dark mode. Actually it has a white background which makes it very difficult for me, even on the S3 mini.
Is it possible to set inverse colors for just one app? Would it be possible to develop an app who allows to set this for another app? Or does such an app exist already?

The same.
Thanks a lot
Just a thought... doctors only know and can do so much. In the end it's always the body that heals its self. Start a anerobic workout program. Start pumping steel.
10-20 minutes 3 times a week for the first 2-3 months. Incorporate back squats at the 3 month mark. All free weights.
Limit cardio to 5-10 minutes and only after the free weights or on off days.
Or
If you like swimming, do that.
The body responds to intense limited stress on a cellular level with increased vitality. Controlled intense stress makes you stronger, boosts and modulates the immune system, reduces pain and increases hgh levels. Force your body to adapt the old fashioned way... it's already programmed into your DNA. Flip the switch.
Do not over train.
As for the rest. I can help you with Samsung customization on their newer phones.
You don't need to use dark mode on all apps, some allow you to set your preference. That depends somewhat on the OS version you're using. Brave and Samsung browser allow either mode.
The whole display thing you'll need to research.
I gave you what I know. In general AMOLED displays are best but you'll need to experiment what works best for you. Maybe limiting the length and/or number of sessions per day would provide the best results. Avoid when tired.
@blackhawk Thanks for your help.
At the moment I can't care about this problem.

Meh, I hear you.
Getting back to your original Q; increase ambient light levels. A bright screen in low light can burn your eyes out. Bring ambient light levels closer to the display level reduces eye strain.
Take a break every 5-30 minutes and look off at a distant object. Close your eyes, chill.
If you don't already, get a cat or a dog. Pick a cool one that has that spark and character. Young rescues are the best, they bond to you like no other.
That is if you like those critters.
Hair of the dog; try a shot of whiskey first thing in the morning. Medicinal this be. Keep it to no more than 2 shots a day, and don't use it to sleep.
Whiskey has antioxidants. See how it feels.
Oddly it hits me completely differently in the morning vs evening and dissipates rapidly.
The Greeks swear by whiskey... of course they tend to swear a lot anyway.
