Touchscreen problem - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

So since last night I've been having these phantom touches on my note. Whenever and wherever I touch with my finger, an extra touch is made close to the status bar. This makes it impossible to scroll, swipe and pinch to zoom. I've enabled developer mode and turned on the "show touch" function. And it is as I described.. almost whenever I touch the screen, an extra touch is made at the top.
I've tried going in to the special Service menu by typing *#0*#, and I fail the touchscreen test.
However, the spen works fine.whenever I use it, the phantom touches stops.
But it comes back when I use my fingers again.
I did a factory reset last night. Worked for like 3 hours, then it came back.
It comes and goes. So it's not all the time. It can work for an hour without problems. But most if the time, the error is there.
Any thoughts? Or should I just return it?

Just a thought as I watched a video on the Note 8 last night and if the screen is or has been wet it won't respond to touch but will to the s pen.

It hasn't and aren't wet at all though

are you using any type of screen protector, accessory, or case? when the note 7 recall happened, I was offered a s7 edge as replacement and because of its contour I noticed I contacted the screen "edges" often with my grip which threw off my touch screen, is it possible the same thing is happening?

wearing any jewelry that may create possible interference? there is a magnetic sensor near the "z" on the portrait orientation keyboard used by the official flip covers that could be being tripped unintentionally

Yeah sorry forgot to mention that. It's a naked phone. No case nor screen protector. Never been dropped or bumped into anything. I've been really gentle with it thus far.

I think there's something wrong with your digitizer, exchange it!

Nexus One hardware issue.

ok it doenst happen when i lay the phone down on the surface and click on the screen it works perfectly
however when i hold it with my right hand and touch the middle of the screen with my thumb
it opens up phone dialer, or appdrawer or vibrante cause it clicks the capacitive button.
when i hold it with my left hand it gets a little bit better but it still does.
if i hold the nexus carefully and touch the screen , it works, when i hold it like this
the things gets better when i put a thick case like otterbox..
is this a hardware issue? ( found similar video on youtube)
my phone is rooted but can i still get a replacement phone?( already put everything back to stock)
and if i do get a replacement, are they going to charge me with anything?
my current nexus one trackball doenst scroll up but everything else works.
How many of you guys got a replacement even though your phone was rooted?
Make sure part of your hand doesn't touch the screen.

it's a hardware issue...
all you can do is not grip the phone too closely to the edge of the screen. It registers touches even if you are not touching the screen completely. But that to be a problem you have to have giant hands
I've had this happen to me once since I had it from launch day. It did happen with my Otterbox commuter series, and a clarivue screen protector. But I turned it off and on again and it was fine.
anyway as stevio jobsio whould say, you're holding it wrong

ok so it is a hardware issue?
no i am not touching any part of the screen. i made sure i wasnt touching the screen.
but it does happen when i hold my phone closely to the edges.
i never had this kind of issues with other touch screen phones..
Well I dunno... One finger at a time and your good to go unless you got fat hands lol

I can confirm that my device too does this. When lying in bed I browse the net with one hand and try and scroll....the edges of the touchscreen seem to register depression when the chassis is pushed or gripped too hard also.
It's a minor irritation to me, but I agree it is a hardware issue.

Spen scratching my screen protector and home button question

I got a used galaxy note in tip top condition and decided to apply a new clear screen protector. My only problem is that each and everytime I use my SPen with any kind of pressure (except the really really light ones) my screen protector gets scratched! This is absolutely appalling and my screen protector is the same brand I always use for all my phones which I have never had a problem before. I've read on the forums about some people claiming that the Spen should not scratch the screen because it was designed for that BUT I tried out another Spen on my note and it didn't leave a single mark! Now I'm left thinking that my pen was probably modified or damaged or something but it looks pristine in all angles.
Are there samsung ICS roms that have the home button lag / double click feature disabled? I'm running rocket rom and can't seem to find it.
Lastly, can anyone try sliding their finger and applying pressure on the home button on the left or right hand side? I tried it on mine and I could have sworn the whole button slopes down and this is making me worried.

[Q] S-pen quality

Hello... i have been using the Note for a while. As for writing and drawing, my S-pen is really smooth, only a very slight pressure is required to register my S-pen on the screen. However, I have some minor issue with my S-pen and that being the false detection of my S-pen when it is not even touching the screen. Because of this false detection, sometimes I get unwanted pencil strokes on the S-memo and also making unwanted selections in the Menus and settings..
I am thinking of getting the S-pen holder that comes with a spare S-pen. But i've seen people in this forum saying that S-pens differ a lot in sensitivity and detection. The official Samsung S-pen accessory(comes with holder) has a grey button. The button on mine is black.
A friend of mine has a grey-buttoned stock S-pen that came with it when he bought the Note. I tested his pen on my Note and it was really bad. It required excessive pressure to register on my screen. However, his pen did not produce any unwanted false detections on my Note; ie. No unwanted pen strokes nor unwanted selections.
So, has anyone bought the spare S-pen from Samsung? What about the pressure/sensitivity of the spare S-pen in comparison to the stock S-pen? Or perhaps it is better to invest in other Wacom styluses, those with eraser function? And also is there anyone here with experience using the Spare S-pen?anyone with advice is very much appreciated. Thanks.
the same happened with me after 5 month from purchase...so i will be getting a replacement this week.........i think no pressure required as i tested my friends spen, it was perfect..
did you resolve the problem with a new S-Pen?
my daughter's Note 1 (N7000) falsely registers the pen as touching; you can see the "hover" spot appear in some apps and it will also draw before you touch the screen. If the paint/drawing app is pressure sensitive, you can draw thicker lines by pressing down just as you'd hope.
I know the phone is OK as it works fine with the S-Pen from my wife's Note 8.
I am sure I read somewhere that it is possible to dismantle a pen and adjust the sensitivity.

typically, I managed to discover the correct combination of google keywords after posting the previous message
yes, it is possible to adjust the pen sensitivity.

I used some brutality to fix the pen. basically banged it on a table hard, on its non-nib end, and also flat on the table. It took maybe eight hits, getting subsequently harder each time, but then suddenly started working, and has been fine since.

Top of the touch screen not responding sometimes

Hi, I have the phone for a month now, its 4 months old. This problem is on since I bought it.
When I try to slide notifications roll-down panel from the top, it is sometimes almost impossible to do. When I do it with whole thumb, it goes down normally, but when I try with other smaller fingers, it wont respond. Also in chrome, I have problems editing www address bar, because it just wont respond to touch. It responds immediately when the phone is in vertical position and I tap there with my thumb.
Since rest of the screen works fine and that particular area works well in certain conditions, I am wondering, if there is some kind of calibration app or setting for digitizer. Phone has not been dropped down, nor it has scratches or anything on display. I have screen protector and so I assume it can be somehow related to it. I have almost simillar issue with old HTC Touch Pro years back, but there was an option to calibrate touch screen with stylus. So I am just wondering, if someone can advise something to do. I really dont feel like waiting 30 days solving it by dealer.
Nexus 7 responds way better on the edges than my One. Also, bottom edge and sides are working fine.
As I am trying to do this over and over I have noticed, that when I click digitizer in chrome on text in adderss bar, there is no respond, but when I click just a bit above the text, it responds with any of my fingers, So it seems like its moved up or something (if you know what I mean, I can not really explain this any better

Not normal, I woudn't bother caliberating it. Just return it to the store, or try warranty via the htc website.
In my case htc always came to my place to get the phone, and they always brought it back after a week or so.
They have a great service

Problem is, that in my country, there is no official service center, thus it has to be sent to our neighbor, and because of that, it takes forever to work it out. I could live with that, if there is no self-help, but I was just wondering whether there is some app or setting or not.

Wierd issue with Nokia 8.

I only got this phone couple of days back and I am having a strange problem.
After installing a screen guard, touch stops working when phone is lying on flat surface. Once I lift the phone, touch starts working again. This happens regardless of the phone is plugged or not in a power socket.
Removing screen guard resolves this issue. However, I installed three different screen guards of glass, plastic and rubber types and with each type touch stops working on a flat surface.
I also did a factory reset but it didn't help. I tried with case on and off but the problem still persists.
At this point I am clueless how to resolve this issue as the phone doesn't seem to be defective as touch works flawlessly without a screen guard.
Same here!
With glass screen protector I have this issue... Can't really use it while device lying on a table.
Hi... Same here also... I thought the screen problem but not even lying on the table but when in charging lying on the table also can't touch... And sometimes it's stuck when to touch... My nokia 6 i think also like that... Maybe the screen curve is??
I have screen protector bought from Taobao, no such problem on my Nokia 8, TA-1004.
The screen protector is not glass type, but looks like plastic type.
Another strange observation: If I plug headphone jack when the phone is lying on flat surface, touch starts working again.
I suspect this entire thing has to do with metal/glass body of the phone and static electricity generated or magnetic field around touch panel.
I don't have much knowledge on this type of scientific stuff so I am not sure what the problem is.
It's the cheap glass protector and its glue that is messing up the touch screen.

I thought so. But what about headphone jack fixing touch issues with screen protector on?
Also, I have used similar quality screen guards on Moto and Huawei phones at my home and they don't have this issue.

Are you connecting it to headphones or speakers?
Maybe the capacitive buttons doesn't like the glue and messes up everything? You could try enabling these in the Developer Options: Show taps & Pointer location. Let me know what is happening

Headphones.
Enabled taps and pointer location. When phone is not touching a flat surface everything works fine. A curve is drawn on screen showing various gestures and a circle is drawn to show taps.
When lying on flat surface, if I use any touch gestures (e.g. scrolling) curve is drawn once in 5-6 attempts. Same with taps, circles appear only once in a while.
It is all very erratic. When I repeatedely try to tap anything, I receive ghost touces at a different part of screen.
Just noticed that I don't need headphone jack to fix touch. Blocking 3.5 mm port with one finger also works. This is truly getting weird.
Have you shown it to the Service Centre? Do they have any theories?
Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using XDA-Developers Legacy app
No, since the phone works perfectly without screen guard, I think service center guys will simply tell me to use it without a screen guard.
But I will indeed show them this problem after few days, though I am not sure they will understand or will be helpful in this regard.
I think I am reaching somewhere. The antenna reception at the top might be messing with touch.
What I have observed that touching the top of the phone or keeping any object or my hand one inch away from top of the phone fixes touch issues.
If I remove the object or move it farther than one inch, touch becomes messy again.
If I put little pressure on bottom chin of the phone, the top of the phone raises a bit so that the top antenna is not close to flat surface any more. This also fixes touch issues. Lowering top part of the phone brings back touch issues.
Anyone else with this issue can test this?
This video exactly describes my issue:
I found that many phones had these issues in past including oneplus, lg, sony and galaxy phones. Everywhere it was mentioned that it is a grounding issue which is unfortunately a hardware detect.
My phone is fortunately within replacement window. So I will contact the seller and request for a replacement.
I was thinking about the grounding, but when you mentioned you used headphones i thought it couldn't be the case.
Keep us updated if you get it replaced.
Just received the replacement. Same problem on the new one
I don't know what to do now. No other phones in my family have this problem and that includes $200 budget devices. This is flagship and much more costly.
I will just summarize different cases in which the touch issues on a flat surface gets fixed on my device:
- Inserting headphone jack (with screen gaurd applied on display).
- Inserting charging cable (with screen guard applied on display).
- Touching any part of the phone with finger including blocking the headphone jack (with screen guard applied).
- Removing the screen guard.
I am tired of this sh*t. I have tried all things possible to fix it. I have also wasted money on 6 different screen guards to fix this issue.
Some guys on galaxy s8 forums mentioned that modern curved phones uses a touchscreen placement mechanism different than traditional smartphones (they were also having the same problem).
There were two possible solutions mentioned:
Find a screen guard that has glue all over, not just around the edges or at dots. Which means that screen guard should stick to the screen 100% flat without any gap, air or bubbles.
Second solution was to use a flip cover to protect the screen and no screen guard.
I will go with second solution and buy a flip cover. I simply have no energy left to hunt for screen guards that work properly on Nokia 8. Not to say that you will never know if it works or not unless you purchase it and stick on your phone.
Hi, I'm writing from Italy and I've the same problem, exactly the same problem, solvable with the same solutions you have proposed: remove the protective film (a glass screen guard in my case).
I'm noticing that the touch screen works perfectly with the protective film only if the phone is connected via USB cable to the battery charger or to the pc.
