does the note 8 support usb otg natively? I can't find anything through google, as everything all I can find is for the tablet.
If I need to use an app, can anyone recomend a good app.
No problem for me. Been connecting usb flash drives using the adapter without any problem.
Both the default file manager and solid explorer detected it correctly. Also able to stream music directly from my usb flash drive.

You should get a C type connector, adapter, with the phone (in the Note 8 box,) that you can use with a USB flash drive.
OTG not required for type C USB drives
I have a USB flash drive with type C connector, i can attach it to the Note 8 directly no OTG cable or converter needed, though it gives a rather worrying notification that says that is is now charging the USB attached device (or something similar) but i guess that just means it's supplying power to the device

if you tap on the USB notification,
in Notification it should open a pop-up message
asking if you want to transfer files, charge another device
etc. Select what you want to do.
Otherwise it will charge the other device.
Good luck
post note
Otherwise yiu can set your preference
in Developers Option /USB configuration
eg to charge, MTP (Media Transfer Protocol)
PTP, RNDIS, Audio source etc.

I tried that and selecting transfer files but after a little bit of shuffling the charging USB device notification comes back, i am guessing it is required to supply power to the device (no idea just guessing)

i have already set the developer option to default to MTP (i hate having to do that each time i attach it to a pc), still same behavior, im pretty sure that it just means it's supplying juice to the flash drive, seeing as the flash drive has no way of powering itself
edit: Just to clarify, there are two USB notifications, one for "USB file transfer" and one stating that it is charging the attached USB device (not the standard "cable charging" notification you get when attaching a USB cable)

Okay, I tried that with two different drives. Someone else mentions some USB setting in Developer settings. I will look into those.
Okay, I forgot about the adapter that came with the phone. I tried that but the phone doesn't recognize most of my thumb drives. I have one that was formatted fat that worked. Others ONLY seem to work if I format with the phone first. That's crazy and severely limits what I can do with OTG. Am I missing something or is this right. I would love to be able to use ntfs or ext2/3 formatted drives.
My USB is formatted as exFAT, note 8 recognizes and allows read and write to it.

For the note 5 I used the "total commander" app with the NTFS plugin enabled - perhaps useful for your use case.
If anyone is having issues with not being able to change the USB option or not having their phone recognize a card reader, someone else had posted something about this for their Note 5: in MyFiles->settings->File Management make sure Manage files over Wi-Fi only is off and you may wish to also show hidden files
I was having fits with intermittent card reader functionality because of these settings. It still shows as charging the USB device, but it now shows the USB memory card in the list of file locations.
My Verizon Note 8 has a 256GB Samsung MicroSD card installed. Not sure if that makes any difference, however using the default file manager it does not show anything changing when I insert any USB OTG. However, I installed ES File Explorer - and it does find the storage but does not actually mount it, although it is readable. I prefer this type of access to the storage, since there is nothing to unmount. Removing storage that has been mounted causes that storage to become corrupted and useless if it is removed without unmounting. I did not know this type of storage connection was possible - I thought everything had to be mounted... Note the circled item in the screen shot - so this is what I have been using...

I can add that I bought a USB C to USB 2.0 type A OTG adapter and it did not work with anything, and sometimes would say that moisture had been detected whenever I plugged it in.
So... I bought a different adapter that is USB C to 3.1 type A and this one works fine with everything I've tested (usb flash drives both 2.0 and 3.x, usb mouse, usb ethernet adapter).
I'll pick up the pendrive and plug it into the usb c adapter on the phone and nothing happens.
The phone does not do anything to plug in.
It does not say anything, does not write anything on the display.
It's silent.
It's like my usb c adapter is not good either.
In the developer settings, I looked at what the usb was about.
Someone's got any ideas.
Thanks

You my friend are an absolutely wonderful human being. I have tried countless times and never figured it on my note 8. Factory resettled multiple times as well. I have a tab s3 and it always pops up but the note 8 not. Changing the option to off seemed to do the trick. Thanks
Seeing as the Note 8 comes with a OTG adapter. I think it is safe to say that the Note 8 does support USB OTG.

Yes but I believe they really meant for people to use that for smartswitch with the cable. I used it and only had to make a minor tweak with a couple of widgets.

Hi guys,
When I connect a card reader/USB flash memory to the USB-port on the connected 4-in-1 cable, how to access these memories?
I also have an external hard disk, which has its own power supply (so no "too less power" issue), but the Athena doesn't do anything with it.
Do these attached memories need to appear as Storage drives in the file explorer?
Thanks.
I received my 4in1 cable yesterday and I found that it recognize hard drive randomly. I mean that not all USB memory are accepted by system. First of all it accepts only low voltage ones and not all are recognized. About mouse host...it recognize mouse but it's unable to show pointer, even with some drivers found on the this forum that should enable it...
So I would like to know what kind of commercial policy is this??? HTC says that with this cable and device you can host HD, mouse...but it's all pretentious, because to use it properly it's really hard!!!
I'm quite disappointed!
Again: when an USB storage device is connected, assuming it's a low voltage device, WHERE to access the memory??
It's an old thread, but what the hell. Plug your USB memory into your 4 in 1 cable. Use file explorer, go to "My Device" where you will see MicroDrive listed. Further down you will see "Hard Disk". That's it.
Thank you, this solves my problem.

mouse pointer works fine with me. Are you using wm6?
I don't think it's just a voltage issue with USB host on the x7500 - I just don't think it can cope with reading from large storage devices. Mine reads 1 gb and 2gb sticks fine. It also reads my 4gb and 8gb sticks but I experience drop-outs and slowdowns with the higher capacity sticks.
I should imagine that a 200gb HDD would send the x7500 loopy. Besides which I don't see the point in having a pocket pc with a mains connected hard drive wired to it. Might as well use a laptop as that would be more portable.

You need a USB Host to go cable - they are pretty cheap off of ebay.
USB hard drives don't always work - at minimum you will need a powered hub.

i know wht USB on the means but how do i enable it. i have tried connecting with a pendrive with the help of the USb on the cable but it does not show .
Once you plug your on the cable in the phone will inform you that usb connecter s connected. Whatever you plug in at the other end of otg cable work run unless it is not supported.

Just plug it in and look in My files. It will show as usbstorage.
I have an official samsung OTG cable, it works fine on the SGS2, but doesn't appear on the Galaxy Note under usbstorage.
Anyone else out there having similar problems?
i had grab some ebay OtG but after unmount and remove the OTG it causes wakelock which drain alot of juice.
I am also facing problems with OTG . when i plug in the cable thr is not msg nor anything happens in phone. please could any one tell me how to enable it may be with kernel or custom rom or may be anything else.
I also want to know this as well,I have spent considerable time yesterday trying to make this work but no luck at all,I would appreciate if someone could help,as I have seen a video in this forum where the guy was able to.connect a mouse to it stating that it is supported out of the box.
I was able to get it to work with a pendrive and a mouse with no problems, but I couldn't get a keyboard or my 2.5" external drive to mount.
Details:
My OTG cable was from DealExtreme for $2.30 or something.
My pendrive was FAT32 formatted.
My mouse was a basic $10 optical one.
My 2.5" external was NTFS, which probably goes some way to explaining why it didn't work even when I gave it some extra power from my desktop PC too.
My keyboard was a standard USB. I also tried a Logitech keyboard with a wireless USB dongle but that didn't work either.
I watched a whole film off my pendrive with no issues. I messed around with the mouse a bit, but the cursor moved too slowly for my taste and the scroll wheel didn't scroll webpages, which is half the reason I'd plug a mouse in anyway.

If you get no message when the cable is plugged in on it's own, chances are it is a problem with the cable. I bought a cable of Ebay which didn't work, so I bought a different one and that did.

Bought 2 USB OTG cable a few days ago but I've been unable to get it work. The moment I plug it into my HTC One, a "Unable to charge device. Please use the supported charger" error. 2 different USB OTG cables, same error. Bought at different times after I couldnt get the first cable to work.
I'm having the exact same issue... I have 2 cables which both work with my Nexus 7 without any problems what's so ever. Does anyone know if there is an "official" cable from HTC or is there some kind cable standard which has to be adhered to, so it works?
I just got a cheap usb otg cable from eBay, works fine for me. What size drives are you trying to mount?

There can be problem with your pen drive. Cause i had lived the same problem. My sd card works in pc but not in phone. I tried using my mouse or another disc with OTG cable and they worked.
The stock HTC kernel has a whitelist that module blocks OTG access when a certain limit is reached like required voltage by the accessory in order to work. Custom kernel now has this disabled so you might want to check that if you want. But if you prefer stock kernel I suggest you guys look for low powered USB drives instead. Cable alone won't have any issues at all with compatibility.
The main issues are the filesystem type & the electrical current required by the USB drive or any device you want to use for OTG.
The charger notification is a bug and might get fixed soon by HTC but it won't have any effects on OTG itself. It's just the kernel mistakenly identify the OTG device as a charging mechanism.
one from amazon, and 2 from ebay, worked great on my HTC ONE S... and samsung galaxy s3, on my HTC ONE, the freeze up, lock up, i dont even try it anymore.

Without any usb thumbdrives attached to the otg cable, the moment I connect the otg to my One, the error pops up. Later connecting the thumb drive to the cable does nothing. Es file explorer does not detect nor does mount usb drive light up (remains greyed out).
Tried connecting the usb drive first and then connecting both to my phone and does detect either. So yeah, I guess might have to buy another usb drive ?
i had the same problem, but....
I was very dissapointed because my htc one could not find the otg usb! I started deleting almost all downloaded software from my device and cleared cash! Then restarted my phone and... Voila! It works! To be honest, i didn't find out the problem, but it works!
Hello, i've bought a galaxy note 5 a week ago. N920C, international version, Marshmallow 6.0.1, not rooted. I was able to get a 32gb variant only, i though that's not a problem, i will increase my storage via USB OTG with Micro SD card reader or USB Flash stick! Today i received all the parts, i've spent whole day trying to find out why it doesn't work, i've downloaded many apps to check OTG compatibility and driver condition. My device recognises the connection when i put in USB OTG cable only - when the screen is off, i connect OTG, screen lights up. Also throubleshooting apps say the same, the device knows when OTG is connected.
The occuring problem : when my phone is connected with OTG cable, i also connect my USB Flash stick / SD card reader / mouse / keyboard / another usb flash stick --> Nothing appears on the screen, file managers show nothing and the troubleshooter stops at recognised OTG cable. Other connection tests won't pass any further. Troubleshooter conclusion - "System NOT Detect USB OTG Signal"; (App name: USB OTG Checker).
After buying a decent high-end device i expect it to have availability to expand storage space via USB OTG, although it was written in phone's specification list. 90% of note 5 devices on the internet say it is working perfectly and i would like to get mine going too :|

Of course it works, you can play movies directly from the USB flash drive. You will need to supply power to the USB drive, connected by wire or using a Power Bank.

Is a Micro USB Port, is the same as your charger. The one that you connect to your Tablet. Search and do some reading on how it works, is very simple but you have to understand how all comes together, there is information on this site also.
Once you have Android install on your tablet, it works the same as others Android or Tablet Devices.
I finally got a OTG Micro USB straight cable, usb on one end and micro on the other, try it out and nothing happens, is there a setting with the tablet that needs to be turn on or off ? thanks

The ROM that you are using is from the Developer Milaq.
I installed the latest Nightly dated December 26 of 2016, of the ROM you are using.
https://milaq.net/downloads/tenderloin/cm-11.0/
After a fresh installed I connected the OTG Micro USB HUB, then connected the HP Touchpad cord charger to the OTG and finally the USB flash drive ( SanDisk Cruzer Glide 16GB). You will noticed that the USB flash indication light starts flashing and a notification on the Left top side on Android tells you ( USB Storage in USE ). Then you go to the File Manager and you will see USB Storage, when you touch it you will see all the files on the USB flash drive and you can play your movies directly from there at the same speed as if were on the internal storage. When you are done, go to setting and storage and eject the USB Flash drive. Is very simple!

I don't see nothing since nothing happens once I connect it, though if I use the cable to connect to my computer I am able to see the tablet internal drive, but not to a flash drive from tablet to flash . This is why I was asking what's exact cable type for this tablet port . I'm thinking it isn't the correct one . There so many different sizes out there. Thanks for your suggestion, much appreciated

And for the second time this is the OTG cable that I have, which I posted the link : https://www.amazon.com/Adaptor-Powered-Charging-Charger-Connector/dp/B00LTHBCNM/ref=sr_1_31?ie=UTF8&qid=1486568545&sr=8-31&keywords=micro+usb+otg If you look at the specification of how it works it tells you is a "Micro Usb HUB Adaptor with Power Powered"
The HP touchpad or old devices do not offer power to the micro usb port, you need a Y adapter one to supply power to the USB flash drive and the other one for data.
That is why I said, do some research to understand the connection, which it clearly shows on the Amazon product.

That will work with devices that allow power out from the charging port. The work around for old devices is the Y connector, with the connector I posted you can use a USB Keyboard, a USB mouse and a USB flash drive all at once, turning a tablet into a regular desktop PC. Like I posted your ROM will work and you can play movies directly from the USB drive with no loss in performance, with only your basic ROM nothing else is need it.
You are very welcome and have fun!
