[Q] Camera slo-mo - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

While I was recording in slo-mo mode at night, is it normal for the screen to be flickering? after i record and play it also flickers but say in the sun it records just fine though? I'm not sure why too and I'm pretty sure it happen both on my S8+ and Note 8 (exynos)

Flickering...or are you seeing Noise? I see Noise...no Flickering. Use the flash and Noise is gone.

Not noise, kinda like when I select the Slo-mo and just point at anything at night it flickers like hell but in the day it's non-existent, is it due to lightning condition?

Was there any lights on nearby? Street lights or ones in house might cause flickering when recording video. Your eyes can't notice the flickering but camera can.
This could be one explanation

Were you near a ceiling fan?

I love slo-mo

is there a site where I can upload a few seconds of the flickering somewhere?
Scenario is this I am in my room, it was night, so I switch on my lights (fluorescent light) when I point the camera to my monitor there wasn't flickering as soon as I point it away it starts, however, it doesn't happen during the day no matter where I point at.

Ah, thanks thought I had a faulty unit.

Camera
Its due to higher fps higher fps needs good lightning condition .its not mobile probl

anything over 60/50fps will cause flickering when shooting incandescent/fluorecent source of light . power grid is on 60 or 50 hertz depending of the region of the world you are in.
Your camera is basically capturing the inbetween state of the power current. At 60 hertz means the negative and positive state switches 60 times a second between left prong and right prong on your wall outlet hence the term AC( alternative current) versus DC.
(some camera softwares try to compensate by dropping frames to not match frames that are inbetween power states)

Screen Flicker - Does anyone NOT have this?

So I'm debating RMA's the N7 I have with Google Play. I have a slight screen raise (this doesn't bother me too much) as well as screen flicker that I notice in low lighting situations (mostly in chrome and maps).
Does anyone NOT have screen flicker? Or is this a software issue?

Hey, I believe the screen flicker is due to the auto brightness function of the device.
I personally don't like auto brightness at all, try turning it off in the brightness menu and see if you still get that.
I see the flicker quite often with devices having that function turned on.

Hmmmm well I guess the only thing I have to compare it to is my iPhone 4 which doesn't do this.
My eyes are usually sensitive enough to be annoyed by screen flicker in any respect. Certainly with overhead CFL lighting.
My 16GB Nexus 7 (2 days in my posession now) doe snot exhibit any sort of screen flicker whatsoever. This is in comparison side by side with my HTC Desire HD which also does not flicker.
The display actually has a very high quality feeling which I like.

Thanks for the feedback. So even in low lighting conditions, with auto brightness set to on, and scrolling around in chrome / maps, you screen never flickers or sort of rapidly dims?
I've noticed it. Only on white web pages or books. Very slight. I had two HTC One Xs that both had it. Its a Tegra issue and doubt we will see a fix. Gutted.
Its not the whole screen. Noticeable around text especially. Some weird refresh prob. Left side of my screen is also slightly raised. Not happy.

I definitely get it on the whole screen, maybe for a second or 2. Might do it 2-3 times per day at most.
double post - deleted
Happened to me, I just turned the auto brightness off and t was fine. Try it, it works.
I keep auto brightness disabled and I haven't noticed the flicker that I can remember but tonight I'll try to reproduce and check it both ways.
I disable auto brightness and use this app which is actually a widget. It allows you to UAW any edge on the screen as an invisible or barely visible slider for brightness. It allows for incremental 1% changes on a slider instead of the typical button/toggle widget and its always enabled if you set it that way which allows on the go ease of use no matter what app or screen is open.
Its helped me attain amazing battery life and always have quick access for setting it just right.

No flicker......no raised screen.
No flicker here. Although I agree with disabling auto brightness, not a fan of the effect that can sometime have.
just recieved 2 nexus 7's today, so far my one (16gb) is PERFTCY *touches wood* this thing is so awsome!! not a thing wrong with it and was shipped from USA to south africa... My dads one on (8gb) the other hand had a raised screen on the left which he has absolutely no worries with its not that bad, but so far we loving this devices ))

I understand that - I'm trying to gauge whether or not it affects ALL N7's, or is a defect.
Google Play is shipping me a replacement N7 to address the screen raise on my current one, and I want to make sure the replacement is 100% A-OK.

Make a poll if you're trying to do that.... But yes, I see flicker too, but only at very low backlight levels and seems to be when wifi is active. I haven't tested to see if it's just wifi, or wifi causing other things (disk activity, etc), but this is the general consensus so far in the other thread.

Front facing camera issue

So the wifey just got a Moto X last night. Of course I had to play around a bit and found that the front facing camera has issues. Seems the sensor is jacked.
Take a look at the snapshot attached.
I called Moto immediately and they were very good. Setup a ticket and they sent a code to order a new phone for a replacement. They will ship out the phone with return shipping labels via Fed Ex.
Other than that the phone seems great. Just hoping this isn't common. Anyone have the same symptom? While writing this a friend of mine sent me this link...
Ugh....

What were the conditions when the camera was on? Mine works very well, but looks similar to that in very dark settings.

This exactly. Mine has no problems at all in decent lighting, as soon as it is dark you will see the noise.

I expect noise definitely. High ISO with low light and that is understood. But the main issue is that from middle to right the noise has sections where it is more intense. You can actually see where it starts via a line. Like it is layered. There looks like three sections where at a certain point the noise goes up from middle to right.
As far as when the camera is on before taking a snapshot... you can see it as well. Yes in better light it is less intense but the patterns are still there via the beginning line. Almost like the sensor isn't the same from middle to left vs middle to right.

[Q] Why is there a flickering effect in camera in certain lightings ?

When i test my ipad and other phone with same lighting, there is no issue.
In droid turbo, it seems its flickering
That's a bit vague, don't you think?
What do you mean? There is flickering on screen before you take the picture? Or in the photos themselves?

If I had to hazard a guess i would think that this is due to the 60Hz flicker that some lighting produces. Apple probably programmed it out of the camera app but Motorola did not, or the sensor on the other devices samples at a different speed.

If it's this then it's pretty ridiculous that Moto hasn't gotten rid of this problem. It's been an "issue" since the 2013 Moto X.

Viewfinder Screen flickering at low light.

I was testing the Note 8 today and saw this odd flickering when using the camera, it would get worse in low light.
I tested 5 phones at two Samsung stores and they all had the same problem has anyone see this before?
I'm aware that this can be caused by the demo phone just wondering if production phones have this problem.
See the vid shot on my mate 8..

Late response but u might find this information useful. This flickering is normal and caused by PWM flicker feature it's used to mask mura effect and color differentiate

Weird banding on photos

I've noticed banding on bright photos this evening. The bizarre thing is that it affects both 48MP and normal photos; so two different cameras. Both in the Xiaomi camera app and other apps. I think it may just be the fact that I'm pointing it at a TV... but what was alarming is that the banding was essentially like an overlay; not moving as I panned the phone.
Is this hardware related or software related or normal?
Those lines are Very normal, when capturing screens.

Normal. It's TV screen display limitations.

Same on my 9T Pro. I have a 5 years old Galaxy Note 5 and I compared them same time with the same objects and while nothing is seen in Note 5, Xiaomi suffered. But if you're using default miui cam, switching antibanding to auto helps a bit.

What threw me was that the banding acted like the origin was the sensor. Seemingly, it didn't move with panning the device. Weirder still is that pointing the sensor away from the TV still elicited some minor banding; almost vertical portions of the sensor had gone screwy.
Since I couldn't reproduce it once I'd gone into another room nor on another bright white LED screen I deduced that it must be the flat-screen in question - it's a plasma screen. And for whatever reason, whilst the banding looks normal in a still, the behavior was odd enough to give me the heebies that something was seriously wrong with the phone's cameras. I'm gonna take a wild guess and say plasma screens and camera sensors don't mix well. I generally find plasma panels a little flickery to the naked eye to begin with.
The fact that both camera modules behaved identically gives me some peace of mind. Didn't have much luck with the antibanding. I think the plasma refresh is just that implicative.
