Potentially dumb questions. - Magisk

Hi folks.
So - I use these custom ROMs on my unlocked, rooted six-year-old HTC One S, but I am not a programmer or app developer. Just a geek.
So I have a few questions relating to Magisk on the Nougat Resurrection Remix ROM:
- Why do I need Magisk? I had the last few CM ROMs, which did not use Magisk. What does Magisk do for my use of the phone and ROM?
- Whenever I open Magisk, it offers an update to Magisk Manager. What does that do that whatever version is supplied with the ROM does not do? Do I need it? Does the manager start showing ads, etc?
Any basic descriptions appreciated.

1- Magisk is a systemless root solution. U can hide root from apps that detect root with it (using the build in magisk hide).
2-Magisk can help u pass Google's safety net check which is a security check that certain apps and games do to check if ur phone is rooted (example Mario run, Pokémon go and certain banking apps etc)
3-On top of all this Magisk can provide various functionality to ur phone by using different modules. For example sound mods like v4afx or Dolby Atmos.
4-Always keep magisk up to date cuz the developer of magisk @topjohnwu is always battling like a warrior against Google and it's security checks. So ur question that should u update Magisk Manager... HECK YEAH!
The update doesn't change much just brings more stability. No ads.

Download apk directly http://tiny.cc/latestmanager
Or build it yourself.
Your phone will still complain that it's from an unknown source though.

Cannot install any apps after installing Xposed framework (-504 error in Google Play)

A few days ago I posted a question about not being able to install any Xposed modules here, so far no one answered: https://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/xposed-framework-installed-running-t3567230
I thought this problem had something to do with the modules specifically, but it turns out that on my phone, for whatever reason, installing the framework subsequently prevents ALL apps from installing, even those from Google Play itself, displaying a "-504" error.
I see people have asked this question before, but are also not getting answers: https://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/install-apps-installing-framework-t3430922
Please, if anyone has any idea of why this can be and how to fix it, let me know. Any help will be infinitely appreciated!
What phone and ROM are you using?
One thing you could try is to install systemless Xposed through Magisk. Then use MagiskHide to hide both root and Xposed from all Google apps and potential sources of conflict. If it's a software limitation/conflict, this may be a workaround.
Keep in mind that you will have to root your phone with Magisk rather than SuperSU or any other form of root.

Hey, thank you for your answer!
I am using a Sony Xperia M4 Aqua E2306, rom is 26.1.A.1.112 Latin America Generic. It is rooted and with TWRP installed accroding to this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/m4-aqua/general/root-e2306-m4-aqua-guide-t3270521
I also have a locked bootloader, and it cannot be unlocked, so unfortunately that shuts the door on most rooting options.
I never heard of Magisk before, but from what I'm seeing, it looks it TWRP is required to get root with Magisk, but some kind of root is already required on my phone in order to get TWRP. So I'm not sure how to go about this.
If your phone is already rooted, then you can download Magisk Manager application and have it installed it's necessary frameworks through the app itself. You won't be able to use Magisk's root, but you'll still be able to install systemless Xposed and hide it from other apps.
Edit: Ignore all of that actually, I just realized that magisk requires boot image modifications so you have to have an unlocked bootloader to use it.

FIY Magisk cannot hide Xposed...
I also facing these problem on my rooted Asus zenfone 2 (ze550ml 2gb ram version, Stock ROM, bootloader unlocked) and Asus Zenpad C 7 (p01y, stock rom, bootloader unlocked). The xposed firmware (version 86) is successfully install but can't install any apps from play store and using apk...
I really hope that dev team can solve it.....
Sorry for any grammatical mistakes....
The only way is to flash the firmware
I'm getting the same problem on my LG G4 with v88.2 of Xposed :/
I don't Know if this is too late, but I also have this problem. But there is a work around, go into the xposed installer and turn the switch off so its disabled on the next boot. rebot the device and exposed and its modules are disabled, allowing you to install apps from play store and downloaded .apk files... it would still be nice to install applications while its still on.
Sent from my LG-K550 using XDA Labs
I had this issue on my LGG3. This happens when you have Lucky Patcher enabled in your xposed modules. Disabling it (Lucky Patcher) should solve the problem.

Advanteges of Magisk?

I want to root my device.
But I'm unable to decide that I should root via supersu or Magisk.
I've read that magisk provide systemless root, but what the advanteges of systemless root/magisk?
Can someone help me that what's the use/advantage of Magisk?
is it much stable then supersu?
I don't want to risk my device as I'm app developer

If you are an app developer, use Magisk. Magisk allows you to pass google's safety tests (Safetynet) - which you should know about if you develop apps! but basically, google will not think your device is compromised is you use Magisk, but WILL think your device is compromised if you use SuperSU - even if SuperSU is installed in Systemless mode. Don't forget to enable magisk hide in the Magisk Manager app to make sure this works though.
Some app developers will check safetynet upon launching their app to see if the device is compromised, and if it is, either restrict features, or deny access entirely. A good example of this is Banking apps, though they usually use their own root detection - but that can be hidden with Magisk Hide. - No bank wants their app being used on a compromised device, where a virus with root access could collect information. The more you know

There are risks with any kind of root on your phone, as an app developer, you should know that.
You could get a virus that takes advantage of root to encrypt all of your files.
Again, you should know this if you are an app developer, there is a difference between creating a single app, and developing applications as a whole!
Magisk is very stable though, more so on OxygenOS but it will be pretty stable with LineageOS too! I have had no problems whatsoever! I have been using android pay and all my root apps without my phone ever crashing! And if you are careful, you won't get a virus (root will not cause a virus, user stupidity gets virus') - enjoy
I'd like to add the main advantage to why I use Magisk.
All my system modifications (build.prop changes, debloating, changed/removed ui audio, etc) are still there after a system update. Even if I have to do a clean install with a wipe, all it takes is flashing a couple of extra zips and everything is right back were I want it.

There's no specific 3T thread that I know of... It's all there in the Magisk forums. It's not as complicated as it might seem.
If you're unrooted, just flash the Magisk zip in TWRP. Done!
If you have systemless SuperSU installed and want to keep it, just flash the Magisk zip in TWRP. Done!
If you have systemless SuperSU installed and want to switch to MagiskSU, you'll need to first remove SuperSU. Use the full unroot option in the SuperSU app and say yes when asked if you want to restore the boot image backup. After that, flash the Magisk zip in TWRP. Done!
If you have any other root installed, just flash the Magisk zip in TWRP and the installation script will do it's best to remove it and install MagiskSU instead. Done!
Edit: There might be variations on the above, depending on if you're using stock ROM or not. Take a look at the link in my signature if you run into problems. I've tried to collect as much info, tips and tricks as possible in one place.

Thanks, it is clear now. Is it possible to 100% pass safety net with Magisk? I read somewhere that it's a hit and miss.
Apart from the Magisk modules what's the benefit of rooting with Magisk instead of superSU? I saw many people still support superSU than Magisk, does it mean that Magisk has some flows or bugs?

I've had no issues passing SafetyNet on my OP3T. It depends on what ROM you're using and if you have any other modifications that Magisk Hide can't hide. Apart from Magisk Hide and systemless modifications Magisk is also open source, if you value that kind of stuff...
There might be apps out there that use specific SuperSU stuff and won't work fully with MagiskSU. I haven't had any issues though (apart from a couple of workarounds, like for Tasker - again, see my signature) and many app developers are starting to make their apps work with MagiskSU as well. Most work out of the box though.
MagiskHide

Ah... Ok. Those kind of issues are easy to work around and the next version of Tasker will have official MagiskSU support.
Use Magisk Manager
I also used Magisk Manager in my old device at it worked fine and as magisk allow you to root Android without effecting on system files I could also install root unsupported apps as well. So i think Magisk is the best solution for you.

Pass SafetyNet with Xposed?

I've been reading several threads here and in other forums as well, and I still not sure if this is possible at all, or it depends on the Xposed modules, etc.
I'm planning to do a clean install of the RR ROM, 6.0.1, try to remove all traces of root, then flash magisk and see if I can pass SafetyNet.
Does a custom kernel interfieres with that?
And if I pass it... any possibility to use Xposed (being active) and pass SafetyNet? Or at least hide it for problematic apps, like Netflix, or Mario Run?
Thanks in advance.
No, Xposed and SafetyNet is a no-go for now.
If you have a device, which ROM has security patches older than November 2016, you may try to use suhide along with Magisk and its MagiskHide, but no guarantees.
The ROM I plan to use is from september, you mean with suhide maybe SafetyNet could pass with Xposed enabled?
Thanks!

With Xposed Safetynet gone.
But you can use no device check module to pass ctsProfile True. But you can't anything about basicintegrity.
the ctsProfile in important. This mean you can play super Mario run or use Netflix in your device. But because of the basicintegrity you can't download or update this app from play store. You can download from apkmirror site.

Great, thanks, for now I will try MagiskSU. Just flashed ROM, removed su and SN passed. But installed boeffla kernel and not anymore. Is it normal? Can I avoid that? Gonna flash Magisk 13.3 now and check.
Thanks for everything guys!
Never mind, got SN again. But after installing Xposed systemless 87 I get bootloop Any idea why? Or is it really a very long boot? I have no Xposed modules at the time, just trying to boot it.
EDIT
Thanks to liveboot, I can see a boot error: Xposed: Can't find file.
Any clues???
Try install classic. If you don’t want disable xposed for pass basicintegrity , no need to install system less. Systemless xposed not active in my phone and I installed classic.
What’s your device? Do you wipe delvik & cache?
I flashed systemless Xposed from recovery and that did the trick.
If disabled, I pass SN. With the No device check module I pass cts profile.
But, Netflix does not work with that configuration. Maybe that app has extra checks? Thanks.

Additional info:
Super Mario Run works fine only for two levels, then is error 804-5100.
Netflix above version 4 (5 and later) says it is incompatible with my device.
- Both appear on Play Store.
- Store version is 8.1.73, installed this afternoon and cleared data.
- Bootloader is unlocked (maybe I should try to relock?).
- I can't find device verification in Play Store settings (is not there), even tried this:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-2/help/module-fix-google-play-certification-t3602629
with no luck.
- Xposed installed with modules but disabled (from Xposed Manager).
- SafetyNet passing 100%.
- Tried both and without Magisk Hide enabled for the apps.
- Disabled superuser and enabled Magisk Core only.
- Build version: 6.0.1_r66 - MOB31E (my signature is outdated).
- I had Lucky Patcher but I uninstalled it.
- Also tried this:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/xiaomi-safetynet-fix-t3600431
Nothing works.
Maybe some other app(s) is being detected by Netflix? Maybe a log would help? Or a full bug report?
Is it the ROM version? Maybe is device specific? Should I open a thread on the device's forum? Am I missing something?
Thanks in advance!

Looking for some tips - Unable to get these two Belgium apps working with Magisk

Hi,
I live in Belgium and it's been years that I'm using Cyanogen, then now Lineage. Recently, I made a bargain and bought 2 Google Pixel 4a, one for me and one for my girlfriend.
I installed Lineage on both of them, and I have to say that it's the best Android experience I had so far. We both love our device. It's small, powerful enough, camera pictures are amazing.
However, we are unable to get any banking apps working. We would like to use 2 applications:
1. Payconiq: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mobi.inthepocket.bcmc.bancontact&hl=en&gl=US
2. Keytrade: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=be.keytradebank.phone&hl=en&gl=US
I succeeded to get Payconiq working on my phone, using Magisk 23 and Magisk hide. So far so good.
Since this morning, Magisk has been updated to 24.1, Magisk hide is gone and I have to use Magisk Zygisk... And Payconiq doesn't work anymore.
Regarding the second app "Keytrade", it never worked, with any version of Magisk. I don't know what they did in their app, but it seems that they were able to find a way to detect if a phone has a custom rom pretty nicely.
Maybe this is something that the author of Magisk should be aware of? Maybe I'm doing something wrong?
Do you have any piece of advice for me? I don't want to be forced to re-install the official rom, I still want to use Lineage and have those apps working.
Thanks!
Edit 1: After installing Universal Safetynet fix (https://github.com/kdrag0n/safetynet-fix), payconiq works, but not Keytrade.
Easiest way is to use a good browser like Brave to login to the bank's website bypassing the app.
I consider banking apps to be trash apps and never load them. The more needless apps you load, the greater the security risk.
Apps I sometimes use but don't like their behavior I package block when not in use and/or firewall block.
Rather than fight it, bypass it...

Not helpful, because thanks to EU rules many banks simply and mandatorily require their app as the second authentication factor - especially when you don't want to use their "real" banking app and use the oldfashioned web interface instead.

Thanks!

How to pass SafetyNet on Android after rooting or installing a custom ROM
It is possible to pass SafetyNet, even after extensive modding like rooting or installing a custom ROM. Check out how to do that here!

Safetyfix passes on the phone... I don't know how the Keytrade app is doing to detect root on the phone.

So true Unfortunately, that seems the way to go in Europe considering banking. If you want it online instead of running to the bank clerk all the time, you're stuck with at least some authentication app. Things get only worse when there's no classical webinterface at all and you're bound to use a complete banking app instead (there are some neobanks doing so already).

They simply recognize Magisk app in some way. I've read in some other threads here that a probable solution is to use the app called "Ice Box" to hide the Magisk app by freezing it. Might be worth a try for you.
Another way if you have zygisk enabled. Go to config denylist select play store play services gms you need to hit menu system apps first. And you apps you wish to hide. Then search magisk alpha telegram channel. Download shamiko module. Reboot your phone with enforce denylist selected. After reboot turn the enforce denylist toggle off and flash the shamiko module and reboot. If your app still does not work and you are using lsposed zygisk. You can download hide my applist Xposed module and further hide your app.
Pm me if you want to links to all as they are not supposed to be posted on xda
Have you managed to fix this?
I'm in the same boat.
My bank app 'keytrade bank' keeps detecting that I've rooted my device. This is what I tried
- I installed Magisk
- Installed module Shamiko
- Installed SafetyNet Fix v2.2.1
- Enabled Zygisk
- Configured DenyList
- Hide Magisk app

You have to disable Enforce DenyList in Magisk.

Magisk Update from 2.30 to 2.4.1 Guide for dummies

The new Magisk is here and with it some major changes. One of the most important is the removal of support for "MagiskHide". There are many advanced users who have figured this all out already and few (maybe more) like me who are just kind of lost not knowing what should be exactly done to be able to update and be able to use Magisk as they were, before the update.
I was hoping that a kind soul would put up an easy step by step guide to help these users and at the same time it will avoid a lot of repetitive questions on the main thread. I personally spent a long time reading many pages and was not able to fully understand what should be done.
In my case all I want to achieve is to update and be able to hide Magisk like it was in the previous version. Should I start by un-hiding it first before doing the update?
(what and how and from where) should I add something that will replace the hiding function? Viola! these are the kind of simple questions that will help some of us get going
I hope that someone will bring his precious help
Yeah I unfortunately did my upgrade and fought with the whole process for 6 hours straight (lol) and I still don't know what I did exactly to even begin to write any instructions - other than 6 hours straight of reading and trying and hoping .....
Not sure if you have been able to refer to this which helped me.... But, I also have an very basic understanding of how my device (OnePlus 7T) works with Magisk... Hope this helps. May be see if your specific device has the instructions already posted in the device specific forum here?

The Magic Mask for Android
topjohnwu.github.io
I've not used the Magisk hide cause I haven't needed it - BUT, it's still available in the latest Magisk Manager (24.1) in the Magisk Manager settings. I'm only using the systemless hosts module (included in Magisk manager settings) for Adaway, and the universal safety net fix to get Google Play store to say my device is certified.
But I don't know what device you have nor do I know the specific ROM you are using.
Sounds like you have root already so I'm thinking that's the worst of this behind you if you've already done that much yourself. Sounds like it's a basic case of update the Magisk Manager app from itself then determine the method appropriate for root to update which could be through the Manager app or like I chose to use the boot IMG then patch that then install since my device has no working TWRP. That, and once I updated the manager app and panicked so I uninstalled it to try and downgrade to v23 .... Good luck and may be just don't update just yet if there is no specific need to at this time. Take your time and read and proceed when comfortable.
Please:
Start with your preferred method of backing up everything first.
Also, may be consider if it's necessary to update and why??? I'm on stock Andriod 11 and this Magisk update make me think it's intended to be more for those on Android 12 - but I could also assume wrongly.

Thanks a lot for your reply wugga3. I also on my side found two very helpful posts. They explain the basics (just to get started) and to make the update . I hope with the information gathered I will be able to do the update without messing things up!

Good and good luck...
One problem and probably the only problem I really had was self inflicted for not following the instructions properly and that was to uninstall any Magisk modules first or at that the appropriate step.
Other than that... still don't know your device or rom etc. Your device specific or rom specific forums may be able to provide you with much better assistance from members that have the same rom/device as you.

I am using LineageOS 18.1 Android 11 for Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and I have twrp as recovery. Magisk 2.30 is already installed and device is rooted. I have no modules installed and in Magisk settings I have only MagiskHide enabled. All other settings are set to default. On Samsung Note3 forum there is no talk about this (understandable as the device is very old).
Ok great and is there any discussion for lineage 18.1 and root/update?
Since it's lineage 18 and based on Andriod 11 - I have to wonder if there is even the need to update Magisk as my limited understanding is that the Magisk update is aimed at Andriod 12? Other than that... I should expect from my prior understandings of Samsung that nothing much has changed with respect to root and updates of Magisk. Not much help but hopefully enough. May be best to wait until for now and usually I do also wait until all the facts are in and the bugs are sorted out (if any...) before I update if unnecessary.
Thanks wugga3,
I disabled "Check for updates" in Magisk app and decided to keep the older 2.30 version for now. Everything is working fine and so there is no reason to fix something which is not broken. The only reason I thought That I should update was a real advantage over the older version or a security weakness being fixed in the new one.
I am even seeing some people asking for help on how to downgrade! Anyway as you said wisely, it;s not after all a bad idea to wait a little to see how things work out for those who have upgraded and have new issues fixed before taking the jump.
Moving from 23.0 to 24.1 is straightforward
1. Update app
2. Update boot (Magisk) to 24.1, reboot
3. Enable Zygisk, reboot
4. Enforce Deny List, reboot
5. Install module USNF, reboot
6. Configure Deny List. Don't worry about Play Service because USNF will take care of it. Add any app detected root into it, and reboot every time it's updated
7. Install Fox Module manager and pick module you want

Thanks a lot for your post mingkee,
I am sure many like me will be happy and appreciate reading this instead of having to go through many pages and still not be totally sure what to do
Allow me to just ask one question as I did not understand the second option of your instruction:
I update Magisk from the application itself. Once updated what do you mean by update boot to 24.1? This is to be done in Magisk itself?

After updated app to 24.1, you will see another update on top of the app (Magisk). Direct install would be the simplest method
