So I purchased the note 8 vr a couple days ago. It updated the software but won't boot up. I get a black screen with an x in the corner. I have the American unlocked version with AT&T firmware. Anyone know any fixes or about this issue?

Are you actually wearing the headset when you see this because that's what it will show when the sensor does not sense you are wearing the headset. The sensor should be located around your middle forehead area. Try covering it with your finger to see if an image comes up.

Yeah when I put it on it will flash white then return to black screen repeatedly. I'll try that but it does make a sound to acknowledge it was put in the vr. I'll try posting on the link you provided as well. I didn't think the firmware I have was an issue since all versions should work with the vr. I'm really confused since everything else works (dex and other usb connections) and the headset works with my gs7 edge

I only have one more suggestion. Did you try clearing data on your Gear Vr and Oculus apps? Otherwise, yeah maybe one of the pros on Gear board can offer better informed help.

Yeah I've tried uninstalling all the vr software and reinstalling a couple times. I reset the phone. I'm just not understanding what the issue could be at this point, only thing I've changed is from unlock firmware to at&t firmware. Both should have support for gear vr though...
Did it work on your note 8 or not cause I am also have same issue
I can confirm gear VR working fine on oreo and was working on nougat too
I'm having the same issue. Worked on Thursday and today (Tuesday) nothing but the blank screen. Is there a light onthe headset sensor? I cannot remember. Mine is not lit if it is supposed to be. I'm thinking a faulty sensor

As Alphapappa77 stated, it used to work, then stopped. We all have the right Gear and connector.
I found if you plug in the charger while you re wearing it, it works.
I too having problem getting the Note8 to work in the Gear VR. I purchased the model SM-R325 which came with the USB-C adapter and it's printed on the box it is compatible with a Note8. Software update on my Note8 said I'm already have the latest OS. Turned off screen lock, paired with the controller and it asked me to install about 10 Gear and Oculus apps, which I did. Browsed to some free contents and the screen ask me to plug it into the headset. Plug it in, snap it in place and put the headset on my face and the screen still look the same (i.e. asking me to plug it into the headset). Tried some of the troubleshooting techniques out there (un-installed and re-installed apps, making sure it sit securely in the USB and headset, etc.) but made no difference. Even took the Gear VR back to the store and exchanged for another brand new one. Plugged a charger into the headset and it does charge the Note8, thou not at a quick charge (on both headsets). Contacted Samsung Gear VR support department and the only thing they will tell me is the phone number for Oculus.
Anyone get it working on this particular VR platform?
Have you enabled all the Facebook Apps as you need them in order to get the GearVR working.
I have the same problem with Note 8, nothing appears when I install the phone in the VR until I had to change the charging plate, but without any benefit, it seems to be a general problem in Note 8 Have you reached a solution

I've got a Sony Smartwatch (the original) and am thinking about replacing with a Gear. I have 2 reasons; My Sony watch died a week ago, and the Gear is a new toy
Questions that I would like answered about the Gear that I do (or used to do, anyway) with the Sony starting with the things I *need* it to do:
1) Battery Life. I'm used to charging it every night, so as long as I can go 1 solid day, I'm good. However, Sony has this ridiculous proprietary cable, and I don't remember seeing in video what the Gear uses...?
2) Vibration. I haven't seen it in video, but heard it mentioned a bit. Basically the MAIN thing I need the watch to do is vibrate when I get a call/sms/email. Ideally, this could do different vibrations (1 vibration for mail, 3 for sms, continuous for phone calls). I'm in noisy areas constantly and I don't want to miss calls.
3) Speaker. Does it make noise when you get a sms/call/emal & can this be turned *off* ? I don't really need an audio alert on my watch.
4) Summary of messages. I've seen mixed results by reading reviews. I'd like to see all of the SMS, and the sender/first line or so from email. (without needing to go to the phone)
5) Caller ID. For phone calls, with the option to pick up the phone, and possibly activate the speaker phone on the phone.
6) Tell the time. (I know it can, but through I'd throw it on my need to do list)
Just Gravy Stuff for me, anything below would be nice but isn't needed to make me 100% happy:
7) SMS. Can you send back a pre-programmed quick response (preferably a choice from like 5 or so)?
8) The answer or call from the watch. How is the quality in a non-noisy environment? What happens if you are paired up to your car and watch - which one wins the fight, the car's built in bluetooth or the watch?
9) S-umm-Search (forgetting what it's called. S-Voice?). I have visions of giving a command through the watch and pulling out the phone from my pocket. By the time the phone is out, I'd like to see results.
10) Camera. Anyone know a place with bunches of sample pix? I'm not aiming for high quality, more a novelty then anything.
11) Apps. I presume trying to use Twitter or Evernote or anything is going to be mostly useless. It would be nice eventually, but nothing I can see where I wouldn't just use the phone. I've seen video of other watching uses things like Fleksy and umm.. cute, but not realistic.
12) The watch face: I've seen some video of the built in choices, but can you make your own or it that an api/developer thing. F'instance, if I want to make a Mickey Mouse watch can I do it?
Thanks for any help - looks like I've got a few days to make a decision!

You do realise that the Gear will, at present, only function with the Galaxy Note 3 don't you?
The new Sony Mk 11 (oddly named the 2 but it is in fact sony's third watch?) Will work with most Android devices. The Gear will not.

Okay. can you edit your post and number each question so I can reply to each question please. Trying to reply would takes ages using any other manner. Thanks.
Lovin my Galaxy Gear
I had the S4 Active but still went ahead and bought the Galaxy Gear. I think its just fantastic. Yes, it didn't work with my Active, so i went and bought the Note 3 the next day. Once i got it started up and paired and played around with it for a day, i realized why the previous versions of androids (4.2) didn't work with it. The Gear, via bluetooth, is deeply integrated into the Note 3 OS. In Samsung Apps, it has its own collection and quite a good list of apps to start with (including evernote).
I'm gonna try and answer you queries but in random order, hope thats ok.
The phone vibrates while you receive notifications, be it calls or other alerts.
Once pairing is complete with the Note 3, you can use it just by itself.
The Gear is synced with your phone, so calls logs, contacts, everything shows on the screen.
It has caller id and the mic n speaker work perfectly.
You can change the face of the clock by selecting from the preinstalled options or download more from samsung apps for Gear.
Once you answer a call, you have the option to transfer it back to the phone or to a paired bluetooth headset.
Gear has a dialer when you swipe from the bottom upwards.
Camera does a decent job but i'm sure an software upgrade can make it better.
The Gear's software upgrade can be done via the Gear Manager app in the Note 3.
Battery has lasted almost the whole day for me, in spite of making calls, using the camera and fiddling with it all the time.
It can get a bit buggy at times while using third party apps but the default apps have given no trouble.
Hope this helps, if you need specific answers, do let me know.

1) The gear uses a cradle to charge the phone, the cable is NOT connected to the watch, the watch sit into or snaps into a complete surround type cradle then the charging cable fits into the cradle. If you leave home for a few days one would need to carry this cradle of one could not recharge the watch. I doubt the Mk2 will be like this, its rather odd.
The battery life is so objective. It will depend on usage. I am getting three clear days so far but have only had the gear since Friday 27th. I would imagine, I don't know, but It is possible for a heavy user to get through the battery in 24 hours. So many factors come into play, the brightness settings to name only one.
2) The gear vibrates and can be calibrated.
3) Turned OFF obviously nothing works. On standby the quality of the speaker is less harsh than the Note 3, it is also plenty loud enough.
4) So far this works for me. I do not know if the SMS would be truncated at some point though due to size?
5) Don't really understand the question. Caller ID does show on the watch.
.......Hang on I have just realised something, rather than me boring you with amateur answers you could go to the Samsung sight and down load the manual as I have done:laugh: I should have made that number one :good:
Just tried to upload it for you but it exceeds the forum limits. Sorry. Go to Samsung and download the manual, all is explained there.

Overall how would you rate the GG? Do you feel its actually useful or more of a toy?
2 questions as I ponder purchase.
1. What is the range before the watch and phone lose connectivity? I hear it's only 5 feet.
2. When you received an MMS or Picture mail does it appear on the watch screen?
Or do I have to open the phone to view the pic.

Hi,
Don't know where to post my question... But... The vr apps on my note 3 always lean to the left. So when I'm playing a vr story or a Rollercoaster...at the end I'm always looking left of almost behind me. Tried calibrating the sensors but did not work. Some apps have a calibration option with the cardboard magnet. But yeah it's pretty annoying... Someone knows what this could be? I'm on Android 4.4.2...

This forum is Gear centric, but common issues some are having with non Gear devices are drift and orientation issues. Most apps have a reset for orientation for this reason. Depending on your phone, this could be better or worse. Depends on the sensor design and set-up. This is all I know on the issues since will really be indigenous to your specific phone, VR headset, software and set-up. Too many variables to have a clue here.
You can try putting your phone on a flat surface while the app is on, leave for at least 5-10 sec. If that doesn't work calibrate you gyro/accelerometer sensors in HwModuleTest, dial *#0*# .

SO I have one of the newer, black gear VRs with the controller. it works fine with my S6 edge. I picked up a straight talk S6 that couldn't be activated due to store liquidation (this was on purpose). When I slapped it into the gear vr, it downloaded all the apps fine and even works with the controller. The issue is that the screen stays fixed rather than allow me to look around inside the scene. If I put my S6 Edge in, that stays fine. When the S906L watches a 360 video outside of the headset, the sensors do allow me to look around the video. I did briefly try to root it with the APK version of kingroot but it wasn't successful so I uninstalled it. Any ideas?
Check it on Google cardboard first
Download the Google Cardboard App and run it on your device without glasses, it'll be ok.
If Google Cardboard is working then there's no problem with the device, If not then might be your Gyroscope is not in working condition.
Well, before I saw this, I tried poking around google play to see if there was a gyro app similar to the old GPS config apps. I found one and it's passing all of the gyro tests. I'll try the cardboard app.
Works fine in cardboard but has the same problem when used in an older, white gear vr. Should I try uninstalling the occulus app and reinstalling it?
Ok so I blew away all gear vr and occulus related apps. I slapped the S6 back in there and it reinstalled the apps. At the login to FB screen, the scene definitely allows me to move within it the proper way. Once I sign in and go through the whole setup, I'm back at the occulus home screen with the dot staying straight ahead and no movement inside the app. I turned off a live wallpaper and toggle phone rotation just in case. Still nothing. I don't get why it works outside the headset (2 different kinds) and works fine in cardboard. I definitely need some ideas as I bought this phone specifically to use with the gear (my old s6 edge has some battery swell that can't be fixed because of some glue in a screw hole).
In comparing my S6 Edge (where it works) to my S6, the screen resolutions are the same but the S6 is 5.0.2 and the edge is 6.01. IS there an issue with Gear VR and lollipop? I loaded some gear apps via the sideload vr app and they do the same thing. There's the "i'm looking here dot" just stuck in the center and I can't look around.
In case anybody ever has a similar issue, a factory reset of the phone worked. Don't ask me why or how..it just did.

Triggers working fine on rm3s latest FW.
Trigger is working fine for my phone, no issue.
The only time when it is not responding (sometimes) is that when I launched the Whatsapp via the redmagic interface (slide from right to left) then I have to restart the redmagic switch to make it works again.

Can you elaborate on the issues you are seeing?
The right trigger (R1) when in play he touch alone.
When someone calls me, the screen goes black and I can't answer the calls.
This system is full of untoward bugs!
This is a shame for a large company that wants to compete in the marketplace.

Yikes. I bought this on Friday and I play PUBG (main reason for buying this phone actually) and I frequently get phones during game play. Really nervous about this phone. I’m hoping that the phone is mostly good. You don’t usually hear the good points nearly as often or as loudly as the negatives. You should hear me witch about the ROG2 and it’s lack of VoLTE. lol
I'm selling this phone for 400€ ... I wanna buy ROG2

SOULTION FOUND 100% WORKING TESTED THANK ME LATER
NOT A SOFTWARE ISSUE
A TECHNICAL CONSTRUCTION FAULT
as mentioned before by someone, the touch issue comes with charge collection over the back of the phone steel case as we continue to move fingers.
this can be fixed by opening the phone by yourself YES YOU HAVE TO OPEN IT
refer to JERRY RIG EVERYTHING YOUTUBE VIDEO how to open RED MAGIC 3
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JiS24PRIq-A
bottom 2 screws open em, then apply pressure nera voulme buttons to separate the back case from main frame+display. there is no glue so chill its really easy no heatgun required.
NOW DISCONNECT THE 2 RIBBON CABLES FOLLOW JERRY RIGs instructions
NOW THE REPAIR PART
SO the issue is caused by the aluminium foli covering the bus moving from right trigger to central bus connection on the back cover.
it shot circuits with the cover near the touch button and collects charge slowly and randomly deposits it via induction interfering wiht the signals travelling in the bus randomly.
if you see the bus coming from left trigger has no such aluminium foil covering it
CHECK THE LEFT TRIGGER IT HAS NO BUS.
SIMPLE JUST REMOVE THE FOIL COVERING THE BUS carefully starting from left then moving towards right trigger and when it reaches the trigger there are a few thin end tags of the foil which surrounds the touch shouder button. use a soft pin to clear the area with ease.
THATS IT
CONNECT BACK 2 BUS
PUT THE main frame mother board PHONE BACK IN ITS CASE
TIGHTEN THE SCREWS AT BOTTOM
restart phone for proper Finger print working
and now you can focus and work on that KD and Conqueror ....
WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER add me
SOLUTION FOUND BY ME
KINDLY SHARE THIS MANY PEOPLE MIGHT NEED THIS HELP

Hi! I had the same problem with right trigger. I have tried that fix removing aluminium tape. This doesn't help! It cause another problem. Now, when I do a little more pressure touch to screen it will activate that trigger. (Like using 3d iphone touch)... For me, I have found solution... The problem with right trigger was in faulty headphones... It sound crazy. However, believe me... Just try to change your headphones. Thanks me later
Is anyone else having an issue with the always on display? Not a big deal but occasionally the AOD goes off and the tap to wake function doesn't work. Unlocking/locking the phone fixes it but it reoccurs again randomly through the day.

I was having the same issue when I had the edge notification app installed that makes the screen light up around the camera when you get a notification.
Uninstalled and no issues since
Tap to wake not working for me
Not sure if this is connected but in addition to the always on display/tap to wake issue when I'm in a phone call the screen will stay off even when I move the phone from my ear to hang up, see the keypad etc. Again I have to use the power button to wake the screen. A problem with the proximity sensor perhaps?

Do you have any notification or edge lighting apps installed?

No, I've not installed any apps like that.
I am having both the issue with always on display and the screen staying off during a call even when it's not up to my face. I don't have any edge display app installed. They happened right out of the box. Glad it's not just me.

This is an odd one - are you using a case? I just had a case through the post this morning and now using the phone with the case the issues have stopped! I'll keep checking through the day but as of now all is good.

Not using a case. It's sporadic. Tap to wake works fine for a while and then stops. The issue during calls is constant. Not major issues just niggles.
Not noticed any bugs with ambient display, but it has used 20 percent battery in 21hrs.
Seems a bit high to me, have just turned it off, not worth a 5th of my battery.

Yeah I'm having both issues happen RANDOMLY as well. I'm HOPING Google will put out a fix for these two issues very soon.
Tried working with Google's Tech Support Team via chat earlier on the AOD issue. Tried a few things like clearing the cache of the launcher & restarting in Safe Mode then back to Normal Mode, and it seems to be doing it less but then it just did it again for a short time like an hour ago.
Using a case, no edge stuff, and also using Nova Launcher (though it happened in Pixel Launcher as well).
If anyone finds a fix for this, I would appreciate it too!

Mine is fine for a while them randomly the tap-to-wake won't respond. I had also hoped that the OTA would have addressed, but maybe it is affecting far fewer users than other bugs.

Yeah. Seems like more and more people are noticing and like me reporting these various issues to Google. So hopefully the next batch will include fixes for all this stuff.
I have same two problem with AOD, touch to wake up and screen off/on when calling.

I recommend you guys report these issues to Google so to increase the odds of them coming up with an OTA sooner than later. You can call them or chat with them via this link (as I did). Just scroll down to the bottom and choose your contact preference.

On the pixel support forum they also recommend you report it via settings>about phone>send feedback about device. I think this way it also easily picks up the log files.
I believe the answer to all of your questions lies in a faulty proximity sensor. I was driving myself nuts with all of these issues exactly, and no app was the culprit because I factory reset and still had the issue. I'm going to post a link to a Reddit thread that I found that confirmed my suspicions. on Wednesday of this week I went back to Verizon and traded the phone in and now I have received a phone that works 100% as expected.
Reddit thread.
Good luck all, hope this helps.

Yeah I got an e-mail from the support guy to do that as well after he'd ask that I send a bug report. Just did it regarding AOD not staying on all the time and also.............I noticed that Hold for Me doesn't ALWAYS come up when calling businesses. Two examples include T-Mobile Customer Service & a local major hospital in Chicago. In most cases though, it does. Just an FYI. Not sure if this is something that they will fix, but I think it should come up all the time, or AT LEAST when you're calling an established business of ANY kind.

Very interesting!
I REALLY don't want to send mine back because I've spent so much time setting it up already (and my sister's too lol). I did some changes in the settings so I'll just cross my fingers and hope it works right.
Is there a way to recalibrate the proximity sensor?

I don't believe it's a calibration issue. The way mine worked (or didn't as the case may be) was sporadic and seemed to almost be as if the sensor or module was loose? Inside the housing. Quite literally, jostling it around would make it work sometimes. Furthermore, if you download the app in that reddit thread, the proximity sensor tester Link Here, you can sort of gauge yourself if it's actually occurring. With mine, sometimes it would work by swiping my hand over the sensor, the color would change. Other times, the color stayed the same, and as the video showed ,I could put pressure on where the sensor was and change the color. But if it wasn't working, jostling the phone around would sometimes make it work and the color would change.
Additionally in the advanced test in that app, it is supposed to tell you how far away from the sensor an object is. On my (nonworking) phone, that number for distance would be pegged at 0 regardless of how far away my hand was. However if I put pressure on the sensor, it would jump to like 5 cm.
See if your phone is doing these things. If so, I would recommend you get it replaced, as it likely will not work properly otherwise. Verizon deemed this a hardware issue when I swapped phones. Also note that I factory reset twice, and one of those times I imported literally nothing when setting it up. So it wasn't a settings or app issue. I do believe there's a rash of faulty proximity sensors going on here.

Hey Morpherios,
Ok.............downloaded that app and tried it out several times. It passed some of the time, but then I'd try it again a few minutes later and it would fail on both tests. Ughh!!
You think even though it passed a few times I still need to replace it?
