Security updates??? - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

Hey guys,
I have a Note 8 that i bought from Verizon, since i got it, i never received a security update. Currently its on August security patch. We're almost in December. Is this just my phone? Or is this happening with everyone?
My friends have s8's and seems like they are getting security updates. Hell, i think my wife's s7 has more current security patch then i do.
Thanks.

I've tried to go into settings and refresh/search for updates, says "your software is up to date"

Same here. Samsung completely forgot about Note series. S8 already has 3rd Oreo beta. And Note8 is stuck on August security patch.

Same with the unlocked model from BestBuy. I returned mine four days ago for a refund because of this.

No I am on Att and I got 2 updates so far. I have had the phone since September 7th.

Guess it depends on your carrier

No updates for me. Still on August security patch.
It's embarrassing how they threat their most expensive model.

I would usually say that it's not a good idea to return a phone because of the lack of updates. But.. latest model, high price and S8 got Oreo. So I understand You. I'm considering switching to Pixel 2XL but literally everyone is complaining about problems with that phone. Not just review websites but xda and people on Telegram too. And here getting a repair is almost impossible. They take Your phone ask for 80% of the phones price to fix it and if You disagree then You have to go to court and eventually after 8 months You will get Your phone or money back. So if my Pixel would have any problems I would be.. yeah.. then I saw Mi Mix 2 for $600 6/128 model.
But I guess I will just wait 1-2 more weeks and we will get new beautiful Oreo with even more improvements(UI, features) than Oreo for S8. Hopefully it will be worth waiting.
But Samsungs behaviour is really disappointing.

That's definitely disappointing. If that was the case here I would stick with the Note seeing it took four tries to get a nice display on the 2XL that didn't bother my eyes at night. It was a tough choice but I was lucky and got a good one this time. If Samsung and Google joined forces they could easily make the best phone. I really hope to see the Note 8 on Oreo soon or at least up to date with the security patches like my wife's S8+ is.

The most recent Note8 firmware is BQJA, which came out last week. It has the Oct 1 Android patch level. If your phone has older firmware and won't update, contact your carrier's tech support. They may be able to push the update to your phone.

Samsung is back at it again I would say (like what happened with US unlocked S7 Edge) ... Last year I bought S7 Edge Olympic Edition which I needed to dump because of lack of updates. Now I have unlocked US Note 8 variant. This "no updates" kind of reminds me of my S7 Edge OE days ... Samsung is really pushing my patience ... I might dump my phone (and my gear s3) and get something different because this is getting ridiculous ...

Yall better check with your carrier before blaming Samsung. Because I have 3 friends that have a Note 8 on ATT and we all have had updates.

The same in the international variant N950F. Since the first Update in September no more updates. Still on August Security Patch, but in the Fota Test Servers are an actually firmware

I understand that it is unlocked but you still have a service provider. Your service provider has dropped the ball not Samsung.

I bought a no-provider retail model and i get my updates from Samsung, not from my provider. I have the Dutch PHN firmware variant.

How can you blame our carriers when we purchased a unlocked version? These should have the update first because it isn't modified by the carriers. If we are running the unlocked firmware our service provider will not update it. That falls strait in the lap of Samsung.

All that unlocked means is that you can use the phone with any carrier. Once you have it turned on through whatever carrier you use then the carrier pushes the update from Samsung to you. Which is the reason some people have received updates and others have not.

You are wrong. I would have to Odin the Verizon firmware to get Verizon updates. I did it and went back to the unlocked firmware and there are no updates via ota or Smartswitch.

Samsung Pay at&t + N920i

So I just bought a 920i version from eBay (monoprice store). Brand new unlocked. I am on at&t. Downloaded the Samsung pay apk and after signing into my Samsung account via Samsung Pay. After signing in I am getting this message "You must use your own Samsung Account to use Samsung Pay". Well, it is my own account.
So question: Has anyone got Samsung Pay working on N920I with a US carrier (more specifically at&t). Do you have a solution to this problem? Thanks in advance!

I'm in the same boat. I've got an SM-N920I that I'm using on AT&T. It's from Australia, with a region code of XSA (meaning sold SIM-free from general retail channels, not from a carrier).
Unfortunately, it's more involved than just installing an APK. In addition to just the app, there are library files that need to be placed on the system partition. Even if you get those libraries on there, you may still run into problems.
In my case, Samsung has said they're planning on launching Samsung Pay in Australia in the first quarter of 2016, so I'm happy to just wait for a software update to my phone that enables it. If your N920I is from Singapore, New Zealand, or Papua New Guinea, there's no telling how long it might be before Samsung launches it in those countries. So, if Samsung Pay matters a lot to you, I'd say to just flash some Australia firmware, and just wait for a software update early in 2016.

Just found the way this morning googling around. I'm on XSA as well.
It sucks that you can't have best of all worlds, even after paying for an unlocked device in full. I wanted timely Samsung updates (no go at&t). I wanted tethering without rooting (no go at&t). I wanted Unlocked. All good with N920i and then I REALLY want the Samsung Pay....f***. Don't even know I will have the phone until the Q1 2016.

Well, here's the problem. Samsung does not sell unlocked, SIM-free devices at general retail in the US. The only way to get an unlocked Samsung device here is to buy one from an importer like Expansys or one of the countless eBay sellers who get them.
Because of that situation, the game is changed a bit. Yes, we're buying an unlocked device, but we're buying one that was not intended for use in the US. Its radio bands, apps, etc. are all tailored toward the country or region where the device was originally intended to be sold. Notice how there's a video call button in the phone app? No US carrier supports that. Notice how the phone supports LTE-A, but not on the AT&T band pairs? That's because it's tweaked to use the LTE-A band pairs that carriers in Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore use. As for the ROM and apps, if you're on XSA as well, then you know. The ROM is as light and bare as a Samsung ROM is going to get, but it's still intended for Australia. So, until Samsung Pay launches in Australia, I think we're out of luck. :/

Samsung Pay is not presently available on any N920I firmware. Judging from your CSC, you're running one of the Singapore firmware variants. But, if you want to get it the fastest, I'd recommend flashing the Australia firmware. The N920I is only sold in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and Papua New Guinea. Of all those countries, Australia is the only one where Samsung has actually said that they plan on launching Pay (right now, Q1 2016). So, once it launches in Australia, you'd get a software update that would enable Samsung Pay.
So in theory, if we flash a Tmobile firmware, will Pay work? Will have the bloatware but I'm not too worried about bloat. Can be disabled with Package Disabler Pro
Edit: Sorry, I was stupid. the two have different model numbers.

Not going to happen. You're dealing with two completely different model of phones. The T-Mobile firmware is for SM-N920T. We have an SM-N920I. You cannot flash N920T firmware on an N920I. Odin and the phone's security policy won't allow it.

It's not that cut and dry. The way Android Pay and Samsung Pay work, they have to work with local banks in each individual country. One worldwide mass rollout just isn't feasible. There's way too much legal and political risk.
Really? That's your explanation? Come on bro.... Google wallet is available for years... It never came to Europe, and Android Pay will never come also.

Where are you getting your Exynos?

I dont know where I will be getting the exynos version as I havent purchased an international phone for its bootloader before. To the veterens, where are you getting yours? Clove? B&h? I might need some buying tips
Interested in the as well
Same here, does anyone know if Amazon will have pre-orders for the international version? Thanks
I've purchased from Clove, Handtec,Expansys, Amazon, and eBay. IMO fulfilled by Amazon is easily the best if you can find competitive pricing. That because their policies make returns a piece of cake. eBay is a crap shoot. As an example some eBay Note 7 buyers were torched (get it, torched ) others got their money back. My Note 7 went back to Amazon with minimal fuss.
Nothing wrong with Clove and Handtec, they just aren't as easy to deal with as Amazon when things go wrong. If you do order from them they sometimes ask for extra information about your card due to issues with international fraud, that's normal.

If ur buying to unlock booatlader then there is no question about warranty
International law requires that manufacturers provide warranty only in the country where something is sold. There are laws in many ountries designed to help deter grey market sales that allow OEMs to deny warranty on products not sold from authorized outlets or from owners who were not the original purchaser. The outfits I mentioned will take the phone back without problem if you received a damaged or DOA unit, from there you have to check the point of sale policies. As an example Handtec would take a phone back and send it in for warranty the last time I purchased from them. I didn't have to but what I noted at the time was that I would have been responsible for shipping from here to there and back.
IMO the international phone game might not be a good idea for those who are spending their last pennies buying in.

Really wanted the gear 360 camera but not buying the snapdragon variant just to get it.
My last pre-order from Clove in the UK was super. Three day shipping over a weekend for delivery to the US. I pre-ordered from Clove again. Yes, a bit painful for the first time credit-card use I have to admit. And for my first purchase from Clove I was not happy about them charging the CC immediately when their web site at the time explicitly stated they would not. But supposedly the Note 8 will only be a 3 week wait. Clove has not asked me for payment yet either.
I have been ripped off on Swappa too many times so I won't bother with anything on there except for well know businesses that list there. Tiger Direct was excellent on Swappa.
Currently there seems to be a Samsung offer of a free DEX in the UK with pre-order purchase. I am guessing it will be impossible to get Samsung to mail a DEX offer to the US.
Looks like the Note 8 carrier band list is identical for the S8 verses the Note 8. I'll assume the Exynos bootloader will be unlocked. Just a matter of how long it will take the developers to come up with a TWRP version, and ROMS. With the S8 I only had to wait a week as the UK release was later than other countries.
For me, the big risk will be the ability to extract the CSC for the US carriers. With the S8, it was nicely done by one of the developers but it is not known if he will expand that for the Note 8.
So you don't think we will get the dex even though we pre ordered an international note 8? Also what's the issue with the first time credit card payment? And one last question. I saw some thing on vat but it said 0.00 do we have to pay anything for that or any other taxes?

Does the Exynos model have all the correct bandwidths to operate properly in the U.S.? I thought I read somewhere that Exynos phones don't always have the best reception in the U.S. I'm torn between the International model and the U.S. Unlocked. I want the option to root and run custom roms, but not at the cost of losing any function. Plus, I'm on Sprint. Does the Exynos International model work with CDMA?

When I go to the link you provided, it shows 'From £724.17 exVAT / From £869.00 incVAT'. £869.00 would be $1112.82. Is that right? When I go to the Checkout page, it says 'Your order below contains a product which is currently unavailable and its final price is unknown. Therefore you can still place the order below but no payment will be taken - you will be asked to pay for this order when those details are confirmed.' As of right now it does say 'VAT (20%) £0.00', so I'm unsure if any tax will be charged. It also includes a disclaimer stating 'Samsung’s region lock stops use of this handset within your chosen country unless activated with a European SIM. I agree for Clove Technology to break the seal on the box, activate the phone and remove the region lock by completing a 5 minute call on the handset.'. Also, depending on my credit card, I'm probably going to get hit with a conversion fee, right? I haven't come across any site to order this model in USD. Are there not any at this time? I'm thinking maybe once the phone comes out there will be. Any suggestions or ideas for ordering this variant for use in the US? Thanks

Its this time of the year guys! This thread is to discuss pre-orders across all stores and providers in Canada. To compare notes and ask ROBELUS related questions. I personally pulled the trigger for an unlocked (no subsidy) phone through best buy, delivery scheduled for the 16th and then I went back in an through Telus the pick up is on the 9th for some reason so I pulled the trigger on both. I'm waiting for benchmarks between sd845 and exynos, in order to decide on which one to pick. I'm probably going exynos route again, shame we Canadians get slammed with the Americans, even if we don't use CDMA networks anymore.

I thought Best Buy did not do this anymore.
I thought you need to buy a carrier subsidized device ?
I am not going to the S9 anyway, I just do not want another device where I will need to wait for at least a year after Android P is released to get it, also I do not want Samsung Bloat you know like Bixby.
...but I am curious will check the Best Buy website, sure enough for only $1100, plus tax and shipping I can get an unlocked device sent to my home. Thanks for pointing this out.
Anyone plan to import the exynos one? Where's the best place to get it from?

Im not 100% if i will get one but for sure but if i do it will be exynos just like my note 7 and S8 plus.
I would not waste my my money on the locked down crapdragon version.
Plus the only colour i like is titanium grey and i doubt we will get it in Canada.
Ill buy local from a store here in the GTA or from PDA plaza if i get one.

64GB so far. No mention of the 128gb variant. Maybe sometime in the future. Pre-order gets you the 150$ bill credit. I know it does for Robelus not sure about Freedom tho.

OnePlus 7 Pro 5G Slow On Updates

Hi, it seems OnePlus and EE are either not bothering to update the 5G variant or they're having trouble updating our phones due to the 5G modem, i maybe wrong but it just seems weird that OnePlus haven't even put out a statement as to why were not getting updated the same time as the 4G variant.
The lack of updates for the 5G is really appalling. The 5G is meant to be the flagship device, yet it is consistently ignored.
For example, the 4G variant is now on 9.5.11, yet the 5G version is on 9.5.5 and missing a TON of features in the later updates
NONE of the Android P betas work on the 5G
Yikes! That's really just awful! I don't live in Europe and don't have the 5G model, but that would infuriate me. Being a flagship device with the price to match, that's just unacceptable.
Yeah I agree, we're 2 months out of date.. my 6 was getting updates within the first week of the new google security patch.
f**k all for my 5G... not good at all. Still, I will carry on in hope..
Finally, people addressing the issues on a public forum. I keep tweeting OnePlus but I haven't heard a dickie bird from them.
The 5G variant isn't even on the list of supported devices on the OnePlus website! "Buy our flagship device with our next gen technology inside but we're not going to support it". I massively regret buying the 5G variant because of the lack of support, acknowledgement that the device exists, no beta inclusion - it's ridiculous!

So there are others with this device!
It's absolutly absurd the way they are treating us - we pay more in total for a more premium version of their already premium device and the last software update was a month ago with no official word on what's happening.
Last time trusting Oneplus with premium that's for sure.
This is an absolute joke. Pay more for a device and get less. I've made countless posts on the OnePlus forums. Spoken to support, OnePlus Support push me to EE and EE push me to OnePlus. I'm reaching the end of my tether.
I totally regret getting the 5G version. Costing me an arm and a leg monthly too... For an over promised and under delivered 5G experience.
This device is costing considerably more per month than the regular 4G version and this is how we get treated? This is beyond ridiculous. I tweeted OnePlus Support and I've heard sod all back. I'm fitting to go to CEX and asking if they'll do a straight swap...

9.5.6 has started being used pre-installed on new devices apperently. Odd

It's a carrier 5g device guys
Did you expect anything less? Not much op can do if the carrier needs to push the updates, same thing with the 4g version, international version is the way to go.

That's not really the case. The phone is unlocked and international version; just with limited carrier support currently

The carrier doesn't push the updates at all. It's an unlocked device and I've had a Vodafone SIM in it from day one!

Sorry I should've said UK
Since it's UK exclusive
it is different firmware, so not necessarily the same numbering scheme as the regular 7Pro. From what I've seen. The 5G has gotten 1 update per month.. which isn't bad. It could be alot worse.

Doesn't take away from the fact that we're still rocking a security patch that's 2 months old!

It's not. It is on sale in other countries in Europe, and it now looks like it's going to be sold in the US as well (on Sprint if I remember rightly)
The model may be "European", but it certainly isn't an UK exclusive!

Only it *HASN'T* got 1 update per month. If it had, it would be on at least the July security patch, but it is stuck on the June patch (and the August patches are now out)

It is unlocked and un-branded directly from EE in the UK, and I believe the same is true for the other European countries it is now in sale in

Question SM-G9980 HK Snapdragon. Anyone got the update?

Can we install the regular snapdragon update?
not got it yet. tried to vpn to other countries but still no joy
G9980 haven't received it too.
I had this version of the Note 20, and to begin with it got all the updates, but then it never got the big updates and became the forgotten stepchild. I hope that isn't happening here.
Sadly no region of G9980 got the beta update and no where got the September patch to sideload the update.zip
While China suppose to be the one of the countries to be in beta phase but there is no news yet for G9980!!
September is almost over and still no update
This is exactly what happened with the china note 20 ultra model. Quite frustrating.
Guys, Septembre is almost over and Samsung not pushing the September patch to 9980 while most of the eco and mid-range phones got it!
I think we the 9980 owners should be waiting for beta 2
There is no hope for 1
From my experience of owning the China/HK model of the Note 20.Ultra, there was never a beta when 11 came out, and while Samsung started out good with updates, it was the same as this ultimately. That's the price of owning this particular model.
In saying that, I've just checked the Korean firmware and it still hasn't got the September patch. Odd.
well this just makes me more disappointed reading this i never own these regions device before and i was hoping and looking in other threads that beta will possible to sideload but i think now no hopes.
I think that China is a REAL BIG market. So no one's want to break their phones) especially when holidays in there. That's my thoughts. And 2nd reason - no one works in holidays... Devs and testers etc
Meanwhile everyone already got October patch but we're still on August lol
In seriously thinking about switching to the US model which is now sim and esim since the beta.
and now we have AUI
but it's September's patch)
I never got that. Still in August...
