Bluetooth audio controls - issues after upgrading to Oreo - OnePlus 3T Questions & Answers

Hi there!
Straight after the upgrade to Oreo, I am now unable to control my favourite music app PowerAmp using the media controls across all my Bluetooth devices.
Music plays fine but I cannot play/pause or move to the next or previous song. Volume controls are unaffected.
What I have done so far:
- Thinking it was an upgrade issue, I have done a full factory reset (reset data partition too, so that the phone was completely empty). The issue was still there after reinstalling everything.
- Tested with different devices.
I tested with: Philips SHB4000, SHB9100, WillNorn Bluetooth Speaker, T-Com headset, Soundpeats in ear bluetooth.
- Removed Apple Music and Google Music to avoid conflicts, still doesn't work.
- Found a menu in the OnePlus settings called Default (I hit "default" using search so I don't know where this menu is) and selected PowerAmp as the default audio player. This didn't work either.
- Installed Smart Bluetooth Headset, selected PowerAmp as the app to control when overriding the Bluetooth call function - This apparently sorted the issue with the WillNorn speaker.
- However, I tried this morning with two different headsets and controls are not responding.
I have found Replay: The growing struggle of playback controls via Bluetooth which I think it's talking about the same issue...But there are no solutions really.
So what did I try next?
I just went for the Autoinput solution but this step doesn't seem to work:
"Next you'll need to create a task. The first action is Alert > Flash. In the text, put You just pressed %aikeycodename. When you push a button, it'll show you the code of the button you pushed and its name."
I tried to follow the guide but Tasker doesn't show me the keys sent from the Bluetooth headset so I'm back at step 0.
No solutions, no clues.
Has anyone ever experienced this, and how did you solve the problem?
Please advise
Kind regards,
Stefano

ROM? Kernel? Root? Add-ons? There's a lot of information that you should give in your OP.
IF you're on OOS 5.0, try clearing device cache from recovery, that may work.
Also try reflashing the OOS5 Zip file without clearing data.

Hi thes3usa,
Thanks for letting me know that I forgot to post more information
I'm using a O+ 3T, OOS 5.0, all stock, never rooted or unlocked the bootloader, etc.
I tried to clear the cache, format data partition, etc. did not work. But after more research this morning, I have found a post on StackOverflow that basically says Google changed the API in Android Oreo so now you have to recur to tricks in order to get the media buttons attention.
See: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/45960265/android-o-oreo-8-media-buttons-issue
Basically, Google Play Music works fine and I'll use this as a workaround until PowerAmp's author updates his code
Kind regards,
Stefano

¿FIX? Notification sounds halt/stop/pauses all other audio playback via headset

I'm pretty sure I've looked and searched all of the Xperia threads for a solution to this issue I'm having with my X1i.
Here's my problem: If I'm playing music (using WMP or the Media Panel) with the headset plugged in and a new SMS, MMS, e-Mail, Reminder, or ANY type of WM notification pops up, the track is halted/stoped/paused/or interrupted for a brief second to prioritize and play the notification sound and then resumes the audio playback. I've looked at all the sound settings to see if there was a new option (headset options) to prevent this from happening but have had no luck...
My only guess is that it has to do with the headset drivers or the notify settings in the registry.
The only solution I've had to work with so far is to un-check the Play Sound box for all the notification options available in Sounds & Notifications and check the Display message, Flash light, and Vibrate options to let me know when I get a new message.
I want to be able to have my notifications "Play Sound" when I get a a new notice OVER any playing audio (overlapping) through the headphones. When the headphones aren't plugged in (and the audio is playing from the speaker) notification sounds overlap (without stopping/halting the audio).
If anything, I'd prefer to have the notify sound play out only from the speaker and not through the headphones, as long as it doesn't interrupt the Mp3 playback.

I think this is fault of WinMo....
i don't doubt that it may be a WinMo issue, but the beauty of WinMo is the ability to edit and correct those little things...I'm hoping maybe one of the developers and ROM creating geniuses can help with either instructions of where to go in the registry to fix this or maybe even create little cab file that'll do the trick
I've tried 2 different ROMS in hopes of having that issue resolved....

I think it's an issue that winmo can't handle two seperate audio streams at once, so it stops one to start the other, but I may be wrong..

I don't think so since multiple apps will sound together (e.g. S2P & Core player). Make a backup and play around w/ the following:
HKCU/ControlPanel/Notification/AlertInterrupt (try 0 and 255)
and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\BuiltIn\WaveDev\Priority256 w/ lower value

Google Play Music - No Audio after Track change

So Google Play Music is one of my favorite android apps, i use it daily and i never really had many issues with it until i got note 3.
Like usual i just plug in my headphones and start listing to music. the problem is that sometimes after 1 song sometimes after 2, the next song is playing but there is no audio. I try to switch tracks and same thing.
Couldn't figure out what it was, i removed the headphones and plugged them back in and the audio started playing again. Tried skipping to the next song, and no audio again.
Does anyone have the same issue or knows how to fix it? I've updated the app to the latest version but i still have that issue. I tried removing the updates and same thing. Can't remove the app completely since the note is not rooted and i am not planning on rooting it just yet since the security in Knox gets triggered and voids the warranty.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks!
Figured it out, it was the built in EQ. Once disabled , everything worked. Now i have to find an aftermarket eq that supports google music

I now presume you simply disabled the eq in the Google Play Music app. Here is a complete solution to fix the EQ bug.
So i did some searching on google specifically for the equalizer, and this issue is a problem across many galaxy devices. I do not have the link but basically the stock equalizer needs to be disabled.
0. Get the replacement equalizer for Google Music called "equalizer" (only equalizer)
Disable Stock Equalizer:
1. Go to settings
2. Go to device
3. go to sounds
4. go to music effects
5. Select "Equalizer" instead of "Music FX"
I have been using viper4android on my Note 3. I had been using volume+ before I got my N3.
Viper is VERY good and has a tonne of settings.
The only bad thing is that it has little hiccups where the music fades out for a moment and then comes back. I don't like the hiccups, but still worth using to me.
Oops, meant to say I mostly use Google Play Music. It also works with Pandora and most everything else I have tried with viper.
I had this problem (stock, no root) and the equalizer was not turned on. The ATT OTA seems to have fixed my audio issues.

Did you install it from the play store or from this xda thread? If the latter, I presume you edited your build.prop? just checking.

Connect to Gear triggers Samsung Music - help

I have a persistent problem that I can't figure out how to avoid ...
Problem #1
Whenever my Galaxy Note-3 makes a connection to Gear via bluetooth, it triggers Samsung "Music" to start. However, Music crashes at that instant, with an error message, "Unfortunately, Music has stopped".
Problem #2
Media Controller on Gear works on any music app other than Samsung Music. It works on Google Play Music and PowerAmp. However, that is limited to working properly on following commands: Play/Pause, Skip forward, Skip backward. But - if I attempt to control the volume up/down, then it fails. At this point, I see that Samsung Music has restarted on Note-3 with the same error message.
Note:
I have a stock Note-3. The Gear is also stock, with latest update (MK7).
I don't use Samsung Music. I notice that I can't uninstall it, nor can I disable it. Whenever I force it to stop (Applications setting), then it reactivates at the time of either above two problem events.
HELP PLEASE !
============== UPDATE
-> SOLVED: see page 2 below.
Can anyone confirm (unlike my experience):
1) Does Samsung "Music" work?
2) Does Gear's Media Control allow volume to be controlled up/down?
Honestly. My best advice is just to uninstall (or freeze in titanium) Samsung music player.

I wish I could but I can't.
I have a stock rom and want to continue with it. As such, native apps like Music can't be uninstalled.
The Application Manager doesn't offer "disable" for this one app.
I love stock too I couldn't find the option to stop the stock music player doing anything, so that was my only option :/
Root doesn't mean custom rom. Like I said it's pretty easy to root your phone, and stay stock (like me). Root just means you have more privalidges with the file system (essentially).
It's an option if no one else can offer anything better!

That is good news then. If I could ask you something, before I begin the root process ...
If I root my phone:
- do I have to reinstall all my apps?
- do all loose all my settings (emails accounts, etc)?
How do I root the phone?
Go to the Note 3 section on xda. They'll probably have a sticky explaining the best way

I had a similar issue with my S4. Samsung music stayed persistant in my notifications bar running in the background. It was also on my lockscreen as a widget. I was able to go into settings/app manager and Turn Off the app. I did a reboot of the phone and all is well. I have since gone back in and turned the app back on and it does not repeat the errant behavior.
It's really weird that whenever you connect your phone to the Gear it starts the Music app, mine hasn't done that ... yet. However, as far as controlling music, mine has worked perfectly fine with Google Music (or Play Music or whatever it's called now). Also, volume up and down should work, however, the first time after you connect your Gear, if you try turning up the volume on the phone, an alert will pop up saying something like "Are you sure you want to increase volume? Loud music can be damaging" (forgive my inaccuracy), you have to press OK on the phone first, then it will work fine. It's really irritating, but better than nothing.
I hope that made sense?
Thanks to all for your comments and suggestions.
What I have deduced is:
- Samsung Music consists of two modules, but the user is aware of only one. The front end is what the user interacts with; it is essentially a file manager. The back end is the audio processor. In my case, there is a disconnect between the two. I can enter the front end and see the list of song files, but I can not play any song which is because the back end is not able to be accessed.
- There is evidence of disconnect between front end and back end. In the front end, I can enter [Settings ^ Play speed]; what I should see is a sliding scale from 0.5x to 2.0x. In my case, the labels are missing when moving the slide bar, and the slide bar does not remember my change rather it remains at 10% setting. I suspect the speed setting is stored in the back end, for which the front end (in settings) can not access the variable's parameter, nor can it later update the value.
- The back end program of Music does work for me. This is proven by selecting a song file in "My Files" explorer, then choosing "Sound player" from the context menu. For me, the song file then successfully plays. I suspect the player is the back end of Music because the icon in the context menu is the same (blue triangle with green music note).
- When Gear is making a connection with Note, it asks Note for the name of default media player. This causes Note to open momentarily the Samsung Music player in silent mode. Note then closes Music as experienced by most users, but in my case Music stays open because of a bug on my system/configuration.
Why is this happening?
- Some writers elsewhere wrote about the interconnection between many Samsung apps because of their interdependence on TouchWiz. Perhaps Music is one such program. Maybe something (other app or my configuration) has triggered Music to break for me.
- At this point I am left suspecting another user app has caused Samsung Music to break between the front and back end. Note, this problem has only arisen in the past month, but in that time I have installed a few more apps and the previous apps have auto-updated themselves. So, I am now left to uninstalling them and testing their effect.
Problem SOLVED
Alas - Problem SOLVED.
It is frequently suggested that Music Player can be repaired by flushing the cache in "Music". In my case, this never solved my problem.
However, today I discovered another cache that can also contribute to the problem, and thus offer a solution.
The following worked for me ...
Step 1
- Settings ^ Application Manager
- App = "Media Storage"
- Action = "Clear data"
Step 2
- Samsung Music
- All song files are removed.
Step 3
- Scan Media
Step 4
- Samsung Music
- All song files are relisted.
- All song files now play. YEAH

[Q] music muting when using google music player

Hi people, I have a question which I am sure may stump you, looked thru some other threads but unable to find anything except the thread on google music id tags. Anyway the problem: Google music does not play any more since I flashed Liquid Smooth Rom v3.2 LS-KK-v3.2-2014-10-29. and GAPPS The music starts for a split second then mutes, then comes on again around 30 secs later. When viewing the volume icons in settings the music, video, games & other media is locked to mute with no way to raise it. Also when I try to unlock the phone, it mutes again when playing. The internet did not offer much help and what it did offer I have tried with turning off voice activation for google now. It plays thru Apollo now but did not this afternoon. Went into v4a settings and enabled what I think should be able to get it working even uninstalling the driver and rebooting also downloading the zip file (android forums told me about) and tried to install but super SU told me that "there was another version running with a different signature". I am running nova launcher but went back to liquid launcher to see if any different, still same problem. Drop a line if you may know how to fix it. I am thinking it is something simple but buggered if I know what it may be. I will start to move my music from google cloud back onto my SD card then move it to Apollo player.
Cheers for any help given.

Bluetooth autoplays sound files in car when trying to use google navigation.

Until about a week or so ago when I connected N6 to car system via bluetooth and used google maps, I got just the google nav voice. Now I start hearing media files, even ringtones and movie sound tracks. I have turned off settings for autoplay in Bluetooth settings, and try to turn off in PowerAmp. Problem is if I stop or pause the playing of the sound track in Poweramp then I lose the Nav voice as well. If I pause or stop the track playing in the car system I also lose the nav voice sound. I have flashed nothing at all between the acceptable nav-voice-only behavior and the onset of the automatic media file playing. Only thing that has happened was playstore updates including PowerAmp, and Google Maps. I did a search in this forum but found nothing about this. Driving me more nuts than usual.
Any help would be appreciated .
Seriously? Only 2 of us have this problem? Really need solution as Google navigation is basically useless until this is solved.
I've had the same problem. I haven't found a solution. I think using voice control has something to do with it.

Bump. Really need help, guys.
Do you ever use Google Music in your car?
I don't know if this will be the answer or not, but if you do have it, it's possible some of these files ended up in the queue. Open up Google Music and click the three dots in the upper right. There should be an option in there to 'Clear Queue' or something like that.
Since this seems to be more or less random media files and not actually songs, I don't know if this is the fix or not, but worth giving a shot.

I just started having this problem as well, and I have no audio player app (rely on built in player of ES File exporer). If you pause the song playing, then Navigation voice works. But whenever the voice says something, the audio file it randomly selected advances that amount of time as though it's playing too

Thanks for your response. No, don't even have Google music. I use poweramp but will see if I can clear queue or something. I haven't used it in the car but that's what is playing the sound files. I went into Poweramp while the sounds were playing and paused it and the sounds stopped. But Nav voice never came back.

So strange. Have you tried using nav (walking maybe?) while not in the car? I'm wondering if you could point it to an app problem or possibly bluetooth problem. What about if you use the nav in the car without going through bluetooth?
I'd also try freezing PowerAmp while using Nav and seeing if that works.
Try to eliminate as many variables as possible and see if you can pinpoint exactly what's causing the issue, then maybe we can find out why.
Other ideas would be clearing data from PowerAmp, test, Maps, test, then Google's voice-to-text or whatever the 'voice' app is that produces the turn-by-turn, test and see if you can nail down exactly what app it is.

Thanks. It plays songs as well as ring tones - - - any sound files it can find apparently. If I pause the player, nav voice stops too. Don't know why it suddenly started doing this. I have not had this happen before in my 11 1/2 months of Nexus 6. Same rom /kernel everything since mid August with no problems until last week. May have to go into Titanium and freeze Poweramp. What idiot dreamed up forcing bluetooth autoplay on us? At least Google maps has an option to play voice over bluetooth or not. Oh, well - - the joys of Nexus.
So I Went into Titanium and froze all music player apps. No more autoplay. Tomorrow I'll see if it sticks and whether nav voice plays over bluetooth. Pita to have to do it this way.

Unfortunately I have nothing to freeze, so I still need a fix. Gonna play around with some of the Google apps and see if maybe one of them (or an update) is causing this. Will let you know
UPDATE: OK for me the issue comes up if I use OK GOOGLE to start things off. The audio time counter advances whenever Candace (name given by my wife to the Navigation voice) speaks. Counter then pauses until she speaks again, then pauses, etc.
If I start Navigation without using OK Google commands, audio time counter does nothing when Candace speaks.
So I think it's one of the google apps. I rolled back a number of them to their default version, but that didn't matter. Could be one I didn't try or even another app. Again I have no music players installed. I use the audio player of ES File Explorer as needed.

Yup. Nav voice over bluetooth is fine. Next step is to unfreeze poweramp & see if autoplay comes back. I'll have wait until next week to try it tho.
