NFC issues - Nokia 8 Questions & Answers

Hello,
I have been having a lot of trouble with NFC/Android pay recently, on the PDQ terminl the phone will often not seem topresent the token via NFC, I can use Android beam ok, device to device seems fine, but passive NFC tags seem to be an issue, I have tested with a few tags and they dont seem to pick up, i've also had a lot of issues using my yubikey, I think this is an issue with the NFC antenna, has anyone else experienced issues using NFC?
I wanted to ask before I ontact support.
Thanks.

NFC on phones with metal body generally have one sweet spot that you have to find out as manufacturers don't think putting this info somewhere is good idea.
In case of Nokia 8 I found out with help of people from other forums that this sweet spot is when you touch terminal with top frame (plastic part) and phone is at about 45 degree angle from the terminal's display. This way paying with Bank app or Android Pay goes through consistently.

The NFC on my Nokia 8 has made paying so much easier than on my Moto G5 Plus, on the Moto G5 Plus you had to be bang on, on the Nokia i seem to have a bigger area to play with so payments are much easier.

Since the update to Oreo I find that before I can read an NFC tag I have to turn off NFC and then turn it back on before it will successfully read. It worked fine with Nougat. Any ideas? Guess I'll wipe the cache partition from recovery and see if that helps.

Did this work? I'm having exactly the same problems with Transport for London terminals since the Oreo update. Works ok everywhere else but there I have to turn NFC off and back on and it works first time.

I found there is no choice in the Nokia 8 Recovery menu to clear cache partition after the Oreo update. Seemingly cache is handled different than in Nougat. I did wipe the cache and data from the NFC service itself via Apps and Notifications in Settings; at first it seemed to fix things but results were short-lived. Someone else has suggested that once NFC is switched off and back on it will stay functional up until the next time screen is locked.
At this point I'm resigned to waiting for the next update from Nokia.

Since I updated Oreo I think NFC is worse than before.
I think is more difficult to pay with my banks. One app hangs itself when I pay, the other one gives me an error. Sometimes NFC is not readed by the TPV. In Nougat I didn't have this problems.
It seems I have to aim for reading, appears the mobile has a very little NFC area. My girlfriend's mobile (Xperia Z1 compact) has a bigger NFC area.
I cannot read NFC post bus tags and Android Beam doesn't work. It's very rare.
Does your Android Beam or read NFC work fine? I'd have to do some configuration that I haven't done?
Thank you
Edit: I have noticed that NFC works reading a Card but it's very slow. I mean, I put the phone over the Visa card and the phone is over 3 seconds reading data. My girlfriend's mobile reads it while I'm putting it over the card... Maybe Oreo problem?

I didn't notice any change when paying - works as well as before once you know how to place the phone to the terminal.

I'm very disgusted. Now I have tried to pay with the phone and it didn't work. Finally i payed with a normal card.
I have read that NFC area is over the flash in the rear camera. Other people say that is located at left of the front camera.
Can somebody attach an image showing what is the correct form to place the phone on the TPV or where is the NFC area?
Thank you

It's very helpful. I will try soon
Thank you!
EDIT: I have payed 4 times this Saturday with no issues at all. Since I place the phone like revanmj suggested, it works perfect!

NFC payment never worked with my Nokia 8 so far after using it a lot with my old phone, a Samsung Galaxy S6 edge. Android Beam works perfectly with the NOKIA 8.
Nokia support wasn't helpful.

There is a bug with the Oreo update. If you approach the terminal with your screen off and just press the power button while the contactless symbol is displayed on the machine then Android Pay should work every time. If you try unlocking with your fingerprint scanner to pay, or try paying with your screen unlocked already then it usually fails.

Turning on NFC before paying and turning off after paying, do the trick for me. Now I can always pay, with no issues.
I reckon that applications seems to be important. Spanish ING app is awful and fails a lot. Android Pay always works for me.

Surely it’s easier to just turn the screen off and then light the phone up with the power button than toggle NFC on and off?
Android Pay only always work for you because you toggle NFC on and off by the sounds of it. It always works for me too if I use the power button method but it isn’t supposed to be like this. It’s a fault and Nokia have been completely useless about acknowledging it - or any other issues. All they seem to care about is self-promotion and retweeting photos taken on Nokias.

My NFC works well for Payments (Through my Banks app not android pay - my bank don't support android pay annoyingly.) if the screen is on.. it doesn't matter how long its been on. I have to hold the phone at 45 degrees to the payment device as someone showed earlier.
It doesn't however.. ever work for passive tags (bank cards, passport, NFC stickers etc), the angle position and turning on/off or unlocking dont make any difference.. it never works.
It does seem like the problems are inconsistent and some devices work better than others.. Nokia really need to address the issue.

NFC fixed in Beta of 8.1
Sent from my TA-1052 using Tapatalk

interestingly, I can read tags and cards better by holding it flat on the area just under the cameras, on ta-1012. I've not tried with a payment terminal yet, but it shouldn't be different... should it?

Issues with Lumia 1520 and WP 10 preview

Hello everyone, hope I will get at least some answer to my issues that I am having with my Lumia 1520, otherwise, I will just throw it away and get back to Android (which I would really like to avoid).
Anyway, a while ago, as in about a year, I have jumped on Fast ring on my Lumia 1520, Wind Black edition (not network locked).
As time passed by, it was ok experience. Yes, WP had issues, and what not, but overall everything worked ok. I got my phone Dev unlocked while it was still on 8.1 but never fiddled with any interops, hacks or anything like that.
So, somewhere after they have removed Astoria subsystem, I started to experience some game breaking issues. Namely, computer doesn't detect my Nokia at all anymore. Mind you that it is not cable issue, it is not port issue, and since a friend of mine also on 1520 experienced the same issue (also on Fast ring), as well as few people online that I saw, I highly doubt it is hardware issue. As said, in one Astoria included build, I had no issues connecting phone to computer, pushing Android apps, removing them etc. Then on, I think that it was next build when Astoria was removed, but I cannot say for sure since it was long ago, and at the same time I though it was a bug in Preview version (which you can expect considering its developers build), and as said, friend also had the same issue.
So basically, when I connect my Lumia to computer(tried on few different computers, havent tried on Linux since I don't have one and heard that its not working on virtual machines), I can hear audible ping from the computer that something is attached, as well when I restart it (Vol Down+Power) I hear audible that something is removed. Phone charges fine via wall charger, as well as with USB, with notification that "Phone is charging slowly" with USB to PC cable...
However, during both cases, I don't see anything pops up in Device manager, nor gets removed after removing Lumia. Obviously, I cannot roll back to 8.1 since Recovery tool doesn't detect it either. I recall that at one point, I have tried following. Attach phone, run recovery, restart it and press Vol Down so that Exclamation mark pops in and during that time recovery detected the phone and started downloading some image. That is how I figured out which my product code is 059V743 RM-937 IT Wind Black. Figured, well, if I get pissed too much, now I know how to get recovery to detect my phone. Except with the latest build (10586.164) it no longer works. Apart from that, phone works just fine.
I have noticed when I have removed Nokia Recovery tool (had both since both were on Windows site to download), once phone was detected as Nokia Boot Mgr or something like that since I didn't paid attention and it installed the files rather quickly...
So, any info on what to try, or where to look (I did searched but nothing that I have googled worked), is much appreciated. As said, tried on different computers, different cables, some also have the same issue, so please skip those advices since I have already tried it. Phone didn't dropped single time, didn't jerk the cables and anything similar, so I doubt it is HW issue anyway.
Thanks and sorry for the long post
I will use this post to politely bump this, since I think this is the first time that I saw 0 reply threads here on XDA
Anyway, after messing around with Vol Down+Power, then Vol Up, firing Nokia recovery tool as well as Windows Device Recovery Tool (yeah I am that desperate now), WDRT detected the phone but with no info on either OS or Firmware on my Lumia. Can someone verify for me please that offered avail image on the server match my Lumia 1520 Wind Black?

Download the firmware files from here:
http://www.lumiafirmware.com/guid/059V743
Create a folder RM-937 under C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Packages\Products\ and unzip/move all the firmware files to it. You should be able to flash using WDRT. If that doesn't work then try flashing with Nokia Product Support Tool for Store.

Thanks for response Pankaj, I did downloaded that files, but had no idea where to put them. Will wait for this "final" release to be pushed, to see if anything will happen, and then give it a go and let you know.
Again, thanks for the suggestion, since I am kinda desperate, since, closest Nokia Care (I don't want to go to local services since they will come with some stupid idea that board is fried or something like that) is in like Hungary or something, which is little too far for me
Cheers
Edit: Managed to revert back to 8.1 using the guide I have posted here

Getting lots of wifi notifications, can't stop them

Hi all - I've searched everywhere but cannot find an answer, would be grateful for any suggestions.
I have a New Zealand Note 9 from 2degrees and since getting it a few weeks ago have been getting a strange sound notification which is somehow related to wifi. It occurs when I come home and when out and about and seems to be due to something like the presence of open wifi connections or maybe something to do with wifi calling. Its an odd sound as well, 4-5 robotic notes and its not one of the notification sounds that you can choose from.
Things I've tried from looking at multiple forums:
NFC and bluetooth off
Accessibility notification off
Reset all notifications settings
The main solution seems I've seen is to turn off the setting "notify me when wifi is available or connected" in the wifi advanced settings, but I do not have this option.

If you go to Apps then click the three dots at the top right hand corner and show system apps. The select "android system". There is plenty of network notification options there to try.
Sent from my SM-N960U1 using Tapatalk
Two things you can do
1. if rooted you can use an xposed module to disable notifications for that
2. other way is you can use app quarantine pro or greenify or some other app to freeze "settings" which blocks the wifi popup, although I'm not sure if that works for your android version but it does work for mine which is kitkat and s5... still might work on new devices
Thanks Limey - had already done that.
Great suggestions zxzxzx......will try those apps and if not successful will root. Was on the fence about rooting but it looks like this may work and the phone is driving me mad.
Also, Pie update is due any day in New Zealand, maybe that will fix it.
Cheers SH
Hi all
Thanks again for the suggestions. It's driving me mad and I may well sell the phone and take a hit.
One more clue...it seems to happen a minute or so after I use the phone, turn it off and then start walking around. Don't think it is location services as does it with location off. And don't think it is when it finds open wifi networks as it happens when in the middle of nowhere and no wifi nearby. Happens nearly every time I go from home office to lounge. Happens with BT, NFC, data roaming all off.
Factory reset did not help, happened straight away, even with no new apps installed.
Could it be related to wifi calling somehow? I need this feature though as have little cell coverage at home. No options to change any wifi calling settings though, other than on and off.
Cheers SH

How to stop malware and spyware on the note 9

Does anyone know how to remove spyware and malware for the note 9, I am getting sick of wiping my phone ,when I know persons are hacking into my phone ,right now I know it has to be something to do with the phone serial number and bluetooth. I had to turn off low power scan and scan for near by devices. I only use bluetooth when I am in my car so when it on I got a feeling there can hack in that way, I don't leave my bluetooth on when I am not using it can anyone help me on this matter person can watch me using my phone view anything my camera see which is the front camera or the rear camera there can also view what I have open when I am using my phone.
Wtf
Is that even possible? I know that there is some software what can be written to firmware ant that way it will survive hard reset. If your phone is not rooted and you using factory firmware then is impossible for someone to access your phone remotely. If you use any software which allows for remote access to your phone, log to your account, preferably from clean pc and change your passwords and user name if possible.

Yeah that's a dozy. Though there are way to do those things he's afraid of, but I thought Google patched those up already since last August?
I'm more curious to know how the OP knows when someone is in the device accessing his/her things.??

So... Is that hacker accessing your camera every time you accidentally double-press the power button? since you don't remember it being open when you press the power button?
Although BlueBorne was a known bluetooth vulnerability, that was 2 years ago, likely patched on a recent flagship like the note 9
I think it maybe BlueBorne but my note 9 was stuck on the August security patch. Ok from the beginning I bought the phone in December waited and waited and I didn't get any updates to the phone so from December to late February I was still on August security patch bear in mine I try almost every day to manually update my the uses of setting and nothing work so I take the phone back to the store I bought it from and there give a BS story about Samsung and update it to the January security patch as I ask so I know the phone can be updated, after I got back the phone I say to myself being that the phone is an unlock phone I did my research and look for a open market that had the pie update so I did a clean wipe one with the phone and one in the recovery before I use Odin to install pie but I hanging over my head that here may be somehow there got back in after the pie update cause I know for sure for December to when I wipe the phone myself all my info was be pull from my phone , picture, video, important data, and as I said the camera being use but the app is not open put this way, if my phone was a computer and you was in the next room using screen mirror and just watch what I doing on my phone plus the ability to use file at will or even download them.

It a pioneer car radio and I know of the interference you are talking about I had a Microsoft zune and that use to pick up all two way radio signals that mean if I am walking down the road and a truck pass i can hear the two way road. But what I am talking about is that the voices I am hearing are voices of persons I know I should had started with that i the bluetooth audio because you will be able to hear them better that way cause the volume is louder that the speaker on the phone and if it quite you can hear them also. Even tracking my data if I call my phone company and ask about my data for the month it doesn't match back to the Samsung data tracker nor glasswire data tracker. Trust me I not going off but if people are doing doing for year you get to pick up on little thing your phone is doing that you yourself is not doing to the phone.

You can still add you input besides that picture
I personally dont think anyone is spying on you. In any case, just wipe your phone and reinstall. If you have backups go through each app and make sure theres no rouge apps.
If you dont want to go through the long process go into apps then into permissions. Disable unwanted permission like camera, microphone on apps that shouldnt need those permissions.
You should really install apps through playstore or apk pure. Apps with mods and cracks are the ones you should stay clear.
We live in a super connected planet interference can happen so easily! Not sure what network provider you are with ? Some network providers suck others are awesome! All depends who you with ??
Also your data not matching up, can be easily be mismatched as servers not updating or your data is on the sever but server only updates once a week or a month to save cost there to many factors involved to say this is the issue
Plus you did say you have reset your Note 9! So how can he really keep track of how much data you have used ?
Mr Ted Harris you are not being hacked or being spied just take a deep breath and relax!

I have three different ways of tracking my data glasswire my network provider and the Samsung way, the thing is in January I get a text message from the provider saying I use up 95% of my data I was at a loss cause if i have a 8gb plan a month and what is not use roll over to the next month and any large download I do on wifi even to update my app I do on wifi, I don't use YouTube on my data for sure Facebook can't be pulling that much data or Instagram, the network provider can't be wrong as as I am typing I have use 1.8gb out of 8gb for the month so for and not putting in to account what I had roll over from February cause glasswire nor Samsung registers what is roll over, just making a example.

Yes I understand about disabling unwanted permissions but as reinstalling app goes you have two options Google or Samsung, Google reinstalling everything you had on your phone even if you downloaded it for apkpure once it can come from the play store, so if a app the say not available in this region and you use apkpure to download it, it will be redownload back for the play store, where as Samsung reinstalling all apps even if there come for the play store or Galaxy store, can it be possible I am redownload the spyware or malware from Samsung cloud as I am restoring my app, in the picture I what I have installed on my phone at the moment only thing I don't normally use is the Norton app.

R845F - Samsung account failed to sync.

Right, so I've got a weird problem. Been searching high and low for a while now and while I've found some reports of the same issue on Samsung's own community forum nothing seems to fix the error.
Basically, my watch was working fine except I had no Samsung Pay and the SPo2 feature was disabled. Decided I really needed Samsung Pay so I performed a factory restore and selected a different region (Spain I believe) which also gave me SPo2. First sign of trouble was when adding this watch to my Galaxy Wearables app, it asked me to restore a previous backup and no matter how many times I tried it kept telling me no backups were found. I finally skipped this step and all was good. Samsung Pay was working, as was SPo2 and everything else. I then proceeded to set up Bixby and it keeps telling me "Samsung account failed to sync. Please try again"... I then start noticing other issues as well, such as I cant sign in to Smartthings on my watch, the Galaxy Store doesnt seem to work etc.
Start roaming around online to find a solution and came up with quite a few alternatives. Hace now tried all of them and the issue remains. About to send this POS back for a refund.
I've tried, in no specific order;
Yet another factory reset
Set-up watch as a standalone device
Re-login to my Samsung Account on my phone
Reset my Samsung account password (to force a sign-out everywhere)
Clear Cache, Data and finally full uninstall/reinstall of the Galaxy Wearables app as well as the Watch add-in
Change CSC on the watch and reinstall the firmware from scratch, then tried to connect before, during and after the various official firmware updates
Log-on to the webui for my Samsung account and removed every single device (bar my phone - Note20U), including the "previous" GW3 entry.
probably a few others as well that I've forgot about.
Like I said, have found a few suggestions of fixes, but none seem to work for me. Spoke to a Samsung employee whos last resort was to have me log in to the webUI and remove the device, which still didnt work...
Surely someone must have an idea that will work, no?
PS. my Phone is signed into my samsung account without issue and all Samsung features work well there, including Bixby and Smartthings.

Mine had the same problem after changing the region.
How to fix it...
Reset your watch and set it up as a standalone device then connect to the wifi and lon in your samsung account on the watch restore your watch from the backups ...
Now on your watch go to connect a phone it'll ask you to keep your data on the watch after painting to the phone allow it and you are good to go.
Sometimes the wearable app may stuck at last step just close the app and start the process again it'll pair eventually.

I've tried, in no specific order;

Afraid not. I even spoke to some Samsung people about it off the books and basically it boiled down to me either exchanging the watch where I bought it or send it in to one of Samsungs service centers.
I ended up returning it to Amazon for a refund as I had won a new one thru some Samsung promotion in the mean time.

This worked for me - thanks very much!
I had the same problem but I managed to solve it making new account cause I found that what makes the problem that the old account needs approval to new Samsung roles which I couldn't find anywhere . So after making new account I approved the the new statements and everything worked

Update: I had to perform a factory reset of my watch and after that could not resolve the account issue with the original fix. My watch is from the UK, set to UK region, but I am using it in Europe (GMT +2). Not sure if all these steps are necessary; it was either the UK time, the UK VPN or both, anyway here is what I did to get it working again. My phone is a Galaxy A20e, watch is GW3 R855F.
On phone set time to UK time zone
On phone log out of Samsung account then back in
On phone -> Settings -> Apps -> Galaxy Wearable -> Storage -> Clear data
On phone, connect to a UK VPN. I did this by connecting my Windows PC to a UK VPN, sharing the connection over WiFi, connecting phone to that WiFi network.
Run Galaxy Wearable, reconnect watch
On watch -> Settings -> Account -> View privacy notice -> OK [previously it would not show any of this and instead asked me to log in on my phone, despite already being logged in]
Now the watch is logged into my account and everything working: Can install apps from watch, remote connection, Bixby

Question Bixby routines mobile hotspot can't connect

I have a Bixby Routine created so that whenever my phone connects to my car's Bluetooth, then turn on mobile hotspot. The issue is that when this event triggers, the mobile hotspot says "Please wait while verifying" then I usually get an error saying "Unable to connect". If I manually turn on mobile hotspot, it works. If turn off my Bluetooth then turn it back on and connect to my car's Bluetooth in order to re-trigger the routine, it works. But when I first get in my car and the Bluetooth connects, the hotspot fails to turn on because it thinks there's no data. I thought maybe it was due to battery optimization since my phone's screen is off, so I disabled optimization for the settings app, but that didn't fix it. I've tried playing with the mobile hotspot settings, but that also hasn't fixed it. I thought maybe it was my adblocker, so I turned that off, turned off my screen, got in my car, it tried to turn on the hotspot, but still said unable to connect. I'm running out of ideas.
I think I figured it out. The error only happens when the phone is locked. I deduced this because when my phone is locked and want to turn on the hotspot, I have to unlock it before it turns on. Thus, if my phone is unlocked before the Bixby routine triggers, no error. Unfortunately, enabling the "keep your phone unlocked" routine option (works via Smart Lock) doesn't help, even if I have it set to occur before the hotspot in the list of routine actions. I have to make sure the phone is unlocked before the Bluetooth connection/routine trigger.
I'm confused about your "keep phone unlocked" routine. Why do you even have a routine for this when Smart Lock can do it for you all on its own. If you're using some kind of routine for both unlocking and toggling hotspot then the order of this would be important but any delay to the unlocking would interfere with the hotspot routine and cause failure. Under Smart lock settings, if you have added your cars Bluetooth as a trusted device then this will run instantly and then the routine should work as this is always likely to be slower. If it still isn't, consider adding a delay in the hotspot routine after the trigger but before the action so that it gives time for the unlock to happen (should be instant but you never know).

Thanks for the reply. Smart Lock says "After you unlock your phone, it stays unlocked when it's connected to a trusted device..."
If I add my car's Bluetooth connection as a trusted device under Smart Lock, it says "Smart Lock can't detect the security features of this device. To help protect your phone, *Bluetooth device* will only be able to keep your phone unlocked once it's already unlocked by you. Your *Bluetooth device* can keep your phone unlocked when it's nearby, even if someone else is holding it."
So regardless, I have to initially unlock my phone myself manually. Keeping it unlocked isn't useful if it can't do the initial unlock on its own, which is what I need in order for the mobile hotspot to be able to turn on. So enabling Smart Lock directly or via Bixby Routines doesn't seem to make a difference.

Ah. Ok. That makes complete sense. I've never come across that message about security features before which is strange because my cars Bluetooth is 12 years old! You think it would be prime for that message. Unfortunately I can't think of anything else that can perform an unlock automatically. Maybe you will have to get used to unlocking your phone on the walk to the car.

Yep, exactly. I've made it a habit now to make sure the phone is unlocked before turning the car on and that's been working.
I'm beyond explaining this...
I've sent over 20 messages and they keep copy pasting the same few templates.

same here. i want to auto unlock my phone when the car's bluetooth is connected. So that an app can run correctly(it doesn't run when the phone is locked).

This message sucks. what kind of security features? what criteria it must have for it to work? it doesn't say anything. and i can't find any info about this.
