Question Bixby routines mobile hotspot can't connect - Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra

I have a Bixby Routine created so that whenever my phone connects to my car's Bluetooth, then turn on mobile hotspot. The issue is that when this event triggers, the mobile hotspot says "Please wait while verifying" then I usually get an error saying "Unable to connect". If I manually turn on mobile hotspot, it works. If turn off my Bluetooth then turn it back on and connect to my car's Bluetooth in order to re-trigger the routine, it works. But when I first get in my car and the Bluetooth connects, the hotspot fails to turn on because it thinks there's no data. I thought maybe it was due to battery optimization since my phone's screen is off, so I disabled optimization for the settings app, but that didn't fix it. I've tried playing with the mobile hotspot settings, but that also hasn't fixed it. I thought maybe it was my adblocker, so I turned that off, turned off my screen, got in my car, it tried to turn on the hotspot, but still said unable to connect. I'm running out of ideas.

I think I figured it out. The error only happens when the phone is locked. I deduced this because when my phone is locked and want to turn on the hotspot, I have to unlock it before it turns on. Thus, if my phone is unlocked before the Bixby routine triggers, no error. Unfortunately, enabling the "keep your phone unlocked" routine option (works via Smart Lock) doesn't help, even if I have it set to occur before the hotspot in the list of routine actions. I have to make sure the phone is unlocked before the Bluetooth connection/routine trigger.

I'm confused about your "keep phone unlocked" routine. Why do you even have a routine for this when Smart Lock can do it for you all on its own. If you're using some kind of routine for both unlocking and toggling hotspot then the order of this would be important but any delay to the unlocking would interfere with the hotspot routine and cause failure. Under Smart lock settings, if you have added your cars Bluetooth as a trusted device then this will run instantly and then the routine should work as this is always likely to be slower. If it still isn't, consider adding a delay in the hotspot routine after the trigger but before the action so that it gives time for the unlock to happen (should be instant but you never know).

Thanks for the reply. Smart Lock says "After you unlock your phone, it stays unlocked when it's connected to a trusted device..."
If I add my car's Bluetooth connection as a trusted device under Smart Lock, it says "Smart Lock can't detect the security features of this device. To help protect your phone, *Bluetooth device* will only be able to keep your phone unlocked once it's already unlocked by you. Your *Bluetooth device* can keep your phone unlocked when it's nearby, even if someone else is holding it."
So regardless, I have to initially unlock my phone myself manually. Keeping it unlocked isn't useful if it can't do the initial unlock on its own, which is what I need in order for the mobile hotspot to be able to turn on. So enabling Smart Lock directly or via Bixby Routines doesn't seem to make a difference.

Ah. Ok. That makes complete sense. I've never come across that message about security features before which is strange because my cars Bluetooth is 12 years old! You think it would be prime for that message. Unfortunately I can't think of anything else that can perform an unlock automatically. Maybe you will have to get used to unlocking your phone on the walk to the car.

Yep, exactly. I've made it a habit now to make sure the phone is unlocked before turning the car on and that's been working.

I'm beyond explaining this...
I've sent over 20 messages and they keep copy pasting the same few templates.

same here. i want to auto unlock my phone when the car's bluetooth is connected. So that an app can run correctly(it doesn't run when the phone is locked).

This message sucks. what kind of security features? what criteria it must have for it to work? it doesn't say anything. and i can't find any info about this.

Problem wit Internet Sharing Program

When I plug in my USB cable my phone used to give me the option of Activsync, disc drive, and Internet Sharing and one day by mistake I selected Internet Sharing and now everytime I plug in my USB cable it opens up Internet Sharing. So is there anyway to stop it from doing this and giving me back the selection?
Thanks in Advance for any insight on this
I have had this problem many, many times.
What I try first is, instead of closing Internet Sharing after plugging it in, just leave it open and unplug your phone before closing it. Sometimes, for some reason, that seemed to do the trick.
If that doesn't work, go to:
Settings > System > USB Settings
And uncheck "Enable faster data synchronization"

This is only a temporary fix, if you need to get ActiveSync working. Well, you can leave it like that forever if you want. Other than this fix, I'm not sure how to solve the issue. Usually I would just deal with it until I decided to flash again.. then uncheck that box, get ActiveSync running, and flash. After the flash, it would be working fine again (until it decided to get stuck on Internet Sharing again).
So, I try to stay away from Internet Sharing if I can. One alternative now is the HTC Wifi-sharing/Router app for your TP. It's pretty sweet, but pretty heavy on the battery, I'm sure.. and I noticed my phone got pretty warm after like 20 minutes of using that app (which is expected).

No problem. Usually I don't have an answer to questions on here but this time I did (or thought so) so I decided to chime in.
No kidding, the HTC Wifi-sharing app is sweet! I didn't even know our phones had that capability (to OUTput wifi.... hmm..) and so I was very pleasantly surprised when I found out about it. Very useful and sweet app.
the problem is that you are closing out the program without disconnecting. i have hard reset a million times with this problem, until i figured this out
all you have to do is plug in your phone. click connect when internet sharing opens. let it connect, then tap disconnect. then close out internet sharing, unplug your phone.
in the future when your done with internet sharing, tap disconnect, close internet sharing THEN disconnect your phone
Or....
settings/system/usb settings/[check: ask me first about USB connection type when I connect the device to PC]
This way you choose the connection.

No. This is already selected by default, and the OP and I (along with others, I'm sure) still experience the issue when it's already selected. Unchecking the box, applying, and rechecking the box still doesn't work (in my experience).

Yeah, I know. I just get frustrated sometimes when some people suggest the most obvious "fixes" (like checking the box to ask what to do when connected to USB) when the said obvious "fix" doesn't work. lol

FWIW, that is not a cure-all. I had the same problem and, just in general troubleshooting, followed the steps you describe two or three times at least with no success. For some reason, though, manually changing the state of the registry key that holds the state of that checkbox (it's in HKLM\Software\OEM\USBtoPC, the key name is obvious but it escapes me at the moment) is what worked for me. I had to disable the popup and then re-enable it, and I was back in business...

[Q] wifi

how to set up a wifi connection on a g1
Setup Wifi
You mean, setup the phone to connect to a WIFI spot?
Settings - >
Wireless & Networks -> (Make sure Wi-Fi is turned on, the tick-box on the right is enabled)
Wi-Fi Settings
Select your Desired Wi-fi Network in range.. if its protected it will ask you for the password.
I'm having the same problem without wifi browsing.
Acquired a week Hi my HTC Dream G1, but he can not surf using WiFi, it finds the wifi networks, although not connected browsing. Using 3G it navigates well. One guy said you need a driver responsible for so called version of Laszlo. Does anyone have this program or know what's wrong?
I can't connect either, are you running cm6?
have you checked your router
MAC filtering ?
Static IP addresses ?
used it a laptop? experiment at a time with the settings
If you cannot connect to wifi, but it sees the networks, typically it is a router setting. Make sure that you don't have WPA/WPA2 Personal enabled, either choose one or the other on the router. This does not cause problems for ALL phones, but it has been known to be a common issue.
I have a HTC Dream G1, but I can't find the WiFi option....

Yes. The only options I have are Wireless settings, and the only options I have under Wireless settings are Mobile network settings, and they consist of just these:
Data Roaming (chkbox); Use only 2G networks (chkbox); Network operators;, and Access Point Names. I just did a hard reset & it wants me to login to or create a google account (stupid google phones!), and I don't have cell service - it says WiFi is a feature of this phone in the manual & the TMobile guy says I should be able to connect to my home DSL with this thing.
I assume there's no way to create a (complicated!) Access Point name that will allow me to access my DSL?
Thank you for your reply!
The setting is there, but in the very earliest versions of android you needed to sign in with a data plan only
Do you know what version of android do you have installed?
There are ways to bypass the login either with root (changing ROMs) or downgrading to android 1.0
The simple fix is just put in a T-Mobile sim card with data plan, sign in, then turn WiFi on and remove sim card
You can search xda g1 threads for "bypass login" for various methods or if you can't find let me know and I'll link you
Haven't had any luck bypassing login (& yet to find someone w/ a sim card I can use)
''... if you can't find'','' let me know and I'll link you.'' Please help! Thanks...
The steps will vary depending on what version of android you are on

This guide will help you downgrade, bypass login, the. Root so you can flash newer versions of android that does not need a sim to login (just WiFi)

I don't know, maybe the zip in your guide has drivers my zip doesn't have. Mine is called android-tools.zip . If so, you may be able to disregard this msg... Can you help me get Sync? Sorry for the hassle... my apologies.... appreciate all your help...

thanks, the drivers in your first guide didn't work
Maybe it's because I need an original Htc usb cable that's square on the left side?
I was going to get one when someone told me that for charging purposes(which was all I was after at the time), a regular angled-on-both-sides Usb cable would do the trick, & I've been using that... (I was originally having problems getting
HTC's weird-looking one). Thanks!
Please come back, Demkantor!
I tried to order the proper cable online, got the wrong one, have tried again, and the correct one should be arriving
in a couple days... :fingers-crossed:
Please come back, Demkantor!
Got the right cable (had to get it from Asia!), now just trying to find the right driver to get the phone to connect properly with PC (detects it, but I get the old yellow exclamation point in device mgr no matter what I do (XP).
Well good were most the way there
If I remember correct the drivers I used came from the android SDK, its hard to say for sure though but I was using xp when I first got my g1
Try uninstalling any driver that comes up when you first plug in the phone, windows may have picked the wrong one for you
This is kinda where I'm at... tried every driver I can find...

Location automatically turns on when Wifi connects

After I got my phone every time location turns on the google message would pop up with the message improve accuracy approve decline etc.
I would always decline.
Then I found if I was connected to my wifi and left the house, upon returning the phone would auto connect to wifi and when it did location services would automatically turn on and the Google message would pop up approve or decline.
It was driving me nuts so I went into every app and turned off the option to change system settings but sure enough every time wifi reconnected the location service would turn on and the pop up would occur.
In the end I relented and selected approve.
Now I find if I select location and change preferred method for GPS to phone only or battery saver.
Now when my wifi reconnects location will turn on for maybe 1-2 seconds then switch off, thankfully he pop up doesn't appear now.
But if I go into the location settings straight after it has changed from preferred method of phone only or battery saver to high accuracy.
Seems dodgy, anyone else get this?
Never occurred on my s7

Could it be something like emergency 911 calling trying to get your location? I remember I had some issues with 911 calling having problems on wifi with locating my position, some time ago, but don't remember details any more. This may be required by law or at least concern your safety. But I'm not exactly sure what is your concern, once you're on wifi your internet address is known and location can be tracked more or less, by routers you're connected to, even if it takes some time.
Which option are you using? I'm assuming the middle one ?

I was using the bottom one phone only. Saves on power.
What I find odd is that once wifi reconnects location turns on changes setting to high accuracy then turns off.
Never had that happen on any other phone.

Mine doesn't do that. But then again I don't use WiFi, will have to check.
Edit. Just put WiFi on and its still on phone only.

Try turning off adaptive WiFi.
Yeah it's off. Since I've only been able to google one other person that has had this problem and it was on an s8, I'd say my mine has just glitched. Maybe a carry over from smart switch as I never use it when changing devices but this time I did.

Mine does this too!!
Is it an app doing it I wonder? I would have thought that's no longer possible so it's gotta be the system. I never noticed it doing this prior to the Oreo FW update

Mine does this from last month,
Looks caused by google play service upgrade, a window will be pop-up for asking you improve the location accuracy as well.
Still not fixed.
Thanks

Probably caused by smart lock?
I have a note5, this was happening to me as well. I turned off "wifi-calling" and it stopped the wifi from turning itself on.
probable solution
I've got the same problem on s8+
I've set off Nearby device scanning @ settings -> connections -> more connections settings. And I've not seen any improve location accuracy prompts since. So far so good.
Edit: nope, it did not worked out. After I switch the display off and on prompt appears.
Has anyone found a solution?
My S8 is doing this too: dozens of times a day location will turn itself on, prompting the high accuracy message to pop up, interrupting whatever I'm doing - which is starting to get really annoying.
All app permissions to location services are off already.
I think it might be to do with WiFi calling. Has anyone found a solution yet?
I have a somewhat annoying pop out, but in my case, every time I open the phone app, appears a " turn on location? " it happens 7 out of 10 times, not always
On Android
Turn off "wifi calling"
Go to wifi settings > turn off "detect suspecious network"
Thats all !

NFC issues

Hello,
I have been having a lot of trouble with NFC/Android pay recently, on the PDQ terminl the phone will often not seem topresent the token via NFC, I can use Android beam ok, device to device seems fine, but passive NFC tags seem to be an issue, I have tested with a few tags and they dont seem to pick up, i've also had a lot of issues using my yubikey, I think this is an issue with the NFC antenna, has anyone else experienced issues using NFC?
I wanted to ask before I ontact support.
Thanks.
NFC on phones with metal body generally have one sweet spot that you have to find out as manufacturers don't think putting this info somewhere is good idea.
In case of Nokia 8 I found out with help of people from other forums that this sweet spot is when you touch terminal with top frame (plastic part) and phone is at about 45 degree angle from the terminal's display. This way paying with Bank app or Android Pay goes through consistently.
The NFC on my Nokia 8 has made paying so much easier than on my Moto G5 Plus, on the Moto G5 Plus you had to be bang on, on the Nokia i seem to have a bigger area to play with so payments are much easier.
Since the update to Oreo I find that before I can read an NFC tag I have to turn off NFC and then turn it back on before it will successfully read. It worked fine with Nougat. Any ideas? Guess I'll wipe the cache partition from recovery and see if that helps.

Did this work? I'm having exactly the same problems with Transport for London terminals since the Oreo update. Works ok everywhere else but there I have to turn NFC off and back on and it works first time.
I found there is no choice in the Nokia 8 Recovery menu to clear cache partition after the Oreo update. Seemingly cache is handled different than in Nougat. I did wipe the cache and data from the NFC service itself via Apps and Notifications in Settings; at first it seemed to fix things but results were short-lived. Someone else has suggested that once NFC is switched off and back on it will stay functional up until the next time screen is locked.
At this point I'm resigned to waiting for the next update from Nokia.
Since I updated Oreo I think NFC is worse than before.
I think is more difficult to pay with my banks. One app hangs itself when I pay, the other one gives me an error. Sometimes NFC is not readed by the TPV. In Nougat I didn't have this problems.
It seems I have to aim for reading, appears the mobile has a very little NFC area. My girlfriend's mobile (Xperia Z1 compact) has a bigger NFC area.
I cannot read NFC post bus tags and Android Beam doesn't work. It's very rare.
Does your Android Beam or read NFC work fine? I'd have to do some configuration that I haven't done?
Thank you
Edit: I have noticed that NFC works reading a Card but it's very slow. I mean, I put the phone over the Visa card and the phone is over 3 seconds reading data. My girlfriend's mobile reads it while I'm putting it over the card... Maybe Oreo problem?
I didn't notice any change when paying - works as well as before once you know how to place the phone to the terminal.

I'm very disgusted. Now I have tried to pay with the phone and it didn't work. Finally i payed with a normal card.
I have read that NFC area is over the flash in the rear camera. Other people say that is located at left of the front camera.
Can somebody attach an image showing what is the correct form to place the phone on the TPV or where is the NFC area?
Thank you

Thank you!
EDIT: I have payed 4 times this Saturday with no issues at all. Since I place the phone like revanmj suggested, it works perfect!
NFC payment never worked with my Nokia 8 so far after using it a lot with my old phone, a Samsung Galaxy S6 edge. Android Beam works perfectly with the NOKIA 8.
Nokia support wasn't helpful.

There is a bug with the Oreo update. If you approach the terminal with your screen off and just press the power button while the contactless symbol is displayed on the machine then Android Pay should work every time. If you try unlocking with your fingerprint scanner to pay, or try paying with your screen unlocked already then it usually fails.
Turning on NFC before paying and turning off after paying, do the trick for me. Now I can always pay, with no issues.
I reckon that applications seems to be important. Spanish ING app is awful and fails a lot. Android Pay always works for me.

Surely it’s easier to just turn the screen off and then light the phone up with the power button than toggle NFC on and off?
Android Pay only always work for you because you toggle NFC on and off by the sounds of it. It always works for me too if I use the power button method but it isn’t supposed to be like this. It’s a fault and Nokia have been completely useless about acknowledging it - or any other issues. All they seem to care about is self-promotion and retweeting photos taken on Nokias.
My NFC works well for Payments (Through my Banks app not android pay - my bank don't support android pay annoyingly.) if the screen is on.. it doesn't matter how long its been on. I have to hold the phone at 45 degrees to the payment device as someone showed earlier.
It doesn't however.. ever work for passive tags (bank cards, passport, NFC stickers etc), the angle position and turning on/off or unlocking dont make any difference.. it never works.
It does seem like the problems are inconsistent and some devices work better than others.. Nokia really need to address the issue.
NFC fixed in Beta of 8.1

interestingly, I can read tags and cards better by holding it flat on the area just under the cameras, on ta-1012. I've not tried with a payment terminal yet, but it shouldn't be different... should it?

Getting lots of wifi notifications, can't stop them

Hi all - I've searched everywhere but cannot find an answer, would be grateful for any suggestions.
I have a New Zealand Note 9 from 2degrees and since getting it a few weeks ago have been getting a strange sound notification which is somehow related to wifi. It occurs when I come home and when out and about and seems to be due to something like the presence of open wifi connections or maybe something to do with wifi calling. Its an odd sound as well, 4-5 robotic notes and its not one of the notification sounds that you can choose from.
Things I've tried from looking at multiple forums:
NFC and bluetooth off
Accessibility notification off
Reset all notifications settings
The main solution seems I've seen is to turn off the setting "notify me when wifi is available or connected" in the wifi advanced settings, but I do not have this option.

If you go to Apps then click the three dots at the top right hand corner and show system apps. The select "android system". There is plenty of network notification options there to try.

Two things you can do
1. if rooted you can use an xposed module to disable notifications for that
2. other way is you can use app quarantine pro or greenify or some other app to freeze "settings" which blocks the wifi popup, although I'm not sure if that works for your android version but it does work for mine which is kitkat and s5... still might work on new devices
Thanks Limey - had already done that.
Great suggestions zxzxzx......will try those apps and if not successful will root. Was on the fence about rooting but it looks like this may work and the phone is driving me mad.
Also, Pie update is due any day in New Zealand, maybe that will fix it.
Cheers SH
Hi all
Thanks again for the suggestions. It's driving me mad and I may well sell the phone and take a hit.
One more clue...it seems to happen a minute or so after I use the phone, turn it off and then start walking around. Don't think it is location services as does it with location off. And don't think it is when it finds open wifi networks as it happens when in the middle of nowhere and no wifi nearby. Happens nearly every time I go from home office to lounge. Happens with BT, NFC, data roaming all off.
Factory reset did not help, happened straight away, even with no new apps installed.
Could it be related to wifi calling somehow? I need this feature though as have little cell coverage at home. No options to change any wifi calling settings though, other than on and off.
Cheers SH
