Has anyone figured out how to get a continuous hear rate from the watch? I just got mine today and it seems that none of the apps can do it. I have tried android fit, hear rate app, and runtastic. Without continuous monitoring of the heart rate the feature is useless in my opinion.
I have same problem, without permanent checks is useless. Is giving nothing with endomondo itd. I don't want check my HR sometimes only.
I choose samsung because of this... and this problem with charger... I choose samsung first time after long time, and I think it's my next mistake.

What exactly happens with the charger? I had a gear 2 and the charger looked almost identical to this one and it had no issues. I don't get how they are breaking.

I don't really think there is an issue at all, except for a few people who misused the device and want to blame the manufacture.

this.
in the videos of unboxing and early looks i watched, virtually every reviewer tried to put on and take off the cradle as it they were the hulk. if put on like a normal human being who doesn't want to break their $200 gadget, the cradle works perfectly fine.
as for continuous heart rate, with the way the sensor (optical) works i don't ever see that happening. and if somehow enabled, working very well at all. the sensor needs you to not be moving and cannot handle moisture. it was designed with more of a before and after exercise use in mind. this is the same way it works on any samsung device with a heart rate monitor.
even when it works, it's okay at best.

The optical heart rate sensor is a pretty standard device that has been used in hospitals for many years. It measures blood oxygen levels. You've probably worn one in the hospital on the end of your finger, they use a red beam. Also the Gear 2 has continuous heart rate, as do other fitness watches such as the Mio Alpha. I've owned both and they work perfectly. There is no reason the Gear Live can't do it just as well as the Gear 2. Its probaby the same exact piece of hardware.

that's interesting, only having owned a gear 1, i was unaware of that. the hardware is most likely identical and is then most likely a limitation of either the fitness app or android wear.
The Gear Fit also has continuous monitoring while doing exercise.

Runtastic when linked to the Gear 2 allows continuous heart rate monitoring. A guy in my running group has one which was part of the reason I got the Live as figured it would work the same.
I'm assuming either Samsung will update their Gear manager to link to the Live eventually or app developers will add the feature once they work it out.
At this point I just can not live without my gear live. I felt that way about the gear 2 and this thing blows it out of the water. I really really need continuous heart rate though and hope they release something soon.

Pulse ox at the fingertip is accurate, not at the wrist. Here's a good article about why optical sensors at the wrist aren't good.
I'm currently under 10 posts, pardon spaces in the link: cnet.com/ news /how-accurate-are-wristband-heart-rate-monitors
I've had 2 wrist mounted optical sensors and they worked with perfect accuracy.
I too had the Mio Alpha, and ran with both that and my chest strap HRM for weeks, it was never off by more than 2 bpm.
So now I've gotten a full fledged smartwatch in the Gear Live hoping it would still perform the fitness functions of the Alpha, but can't find an app to help me do so. Has anyone found anything?

I have been looking for something too but haven't found anything. I have emailed the developer for this app.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pribble.htc.ble.hrm
I also tweeted the developer for this app.

If I hear something back I will update here.
It's totally lame because the gear 2 does it, albeit not as good as the mio. Honestly though once I saw that the moto 360 had a HRM both my gear lives went for sale. I really hate Samsung with a passion lol and won't be buying one of their products for a while. They make these great products with potential and then use the cheapest materials on planet earth to construct them and then have a 5 year old draw their OS with crayons and release it. I hope they aren't shocked their sales have dipped significantly last quarter.
I'm basically upset about the whole charging debacle and the fact that Samsung purposely crippled the gear live by not developing a simple heart rate app because they don't want the live to compete with their horrible Tizen platform. I guarantee moto will have a continuous heart rate monitor out of the box when it's released.

I'm not sure the Moto360 will have anything more available than the Live does... RunTracker, RunTastic, GoogleFit, MyTracks,etc... none of them pull data from the HRM on the Live... They are the same apps that will be available to the 360 when it finally gets here.
I also had a Gear2 and while it had software to do continuous monitoring, it was a bad hardware design. I was hopeful the Live would be better since they curved the back and moved the sensor to the middle. On the Gear2, the sensor was in the corner and the back was flat which kept the corner and sensor from staying in direct contact with my wrist.
This layout is like the Mio, but unbelievably there is no software that utilizes the HRM yet.

I feel exactly the same way. When I saw the location of the sensor on the live I was excited and immediately offed my gear 2. Then waited weeks for my live to arrive only to find out it was literally useless. That coupled with yet another build quality issue from Samsung (charger) and I'm done. I'm confident the moto 360 will have a Motorola app capable of monitoring heart rate continuously.
Well since the moto 360 will have the same apps as the g watch and the gear live since they are keeping the manufacturers from changing android wear , it's really up to a developer to make an app that uses this function otherwise Google will have to release something.

They can still add their own apps to the watch if they wanted to. If not they could just make an app and put it in the store to be downloaded.
Hi all,
I am currently torn between the moto 360 and the g watch r. I was wondering if all the faces that are in the moto section would work fine on the g watch as the screens look a little different size? Also is this screen burn in going to be abit of an issue having some really different watch faces? Last question, has anyone side loaded a keyboard and is it ok to use it if you have to? It looks like it's easier on the 360 because of the bigger screen
Thanks
The Moto 360 watch faces work just fine on the LG G Watch R. And most Facer Moto 360 faces, that show a cutoff bottom are not cutoff on the LG G Watch R. So far, I've only found one of the many I like, that has a cutoff bottom on the LG G Watch R.
Screen burn in may be an issue, if you use a face that has lots of light color on the dimmed face.
I have not tried a keyboard. But the screen size difference is just 0.2 inches. I don't think that will grant you very much extra space to work with. Also, consider the weaker processor and smaller battery in the Moto 360. It probably won't allow you to type as smoothly and your battery will run out faster.

Yea, or if it does not have a good (minimal) dimmed face and you like it. Turn off always on screen while using it.

Hi,
Got mine yesterday and notice that most non-standard faces you find have unusable dim-mode.
I installed InstaWeather, Speeds and Modern faces and, unless you use screen-off mode, these are awfully bright when dimmed. As I have a watch to read the time, screen-off is no solution for me so I'll stick to the standard faces for the moment.
Are there any faces out there that have decent dim-modes?

Dim mode of InstaWeather is good I think. We can have hour, and some weather icon in black and white mode.

There are also many other face with good dim mode. Also the digital from Smartwatch Bureau wich can be displayed in green in dim mode to avoid burning and also a setup for brightness in dim mode.
(others faces also in the G+ french community )
Hey guys,
So my g watch r only shows me a heart rate when I firmly press the watch against the bottom side of my wrist. When I wear it normally it never gets a reading (even after 5+ tries). Also when I hold really still or when I hold it tightly against my wrist or tighten the watchband as tight as it goes... No chance. Does anyone have an idea what could be wrong? Or will I just have to send it back and hope for a new one with a better sensor?
It seems to have worked a bit in the beginning though. It always took two tries or so, but it eventually worked (when I wore it normally). Now it really only works when pressed against the bottom of my wrist, which doesn't really help me out during workout... Can it be that the new update kind of messed the sensor up?
Thanks in advance!
Cheers
Michael

I have the same problem as you, heart rate monitoring on the R kind of sucks :/
Most of the times it doesn't work for me, but when it does, it shows random results, like 56 first and then 89 ten seconds later.
I don't know if the update caused this, cause i updated my version as soon as I unboxed it.
My sensor (while it even worked) read 70 BPM from a table sitting a meter from me, so... yeah, kind of useless.
Some people had better luck but getting meaningful readout meant averaging the rate over a longer time (which is what fitness apps do, or should do).
What kind of error are you getting? I never got the "tighten band and try again" error until the sensor stopped working completely, it just returned "something" - always
Try to uninstall Google fit. Did it for me.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
I don't have Fit installed and it works fine. During work outs, Endomondo gives reliable figures, instant values are OK also.
Yea the heart rate sensor is rubbish, I was at the gym yesterday on the treadmill running like 6 mph on the treadmil got my HR up to 180 according to the machine but the watch reported like 59 at first than 90 than like 110.
Hehe ok nice to see that I am not the only one with Problems!
I checked out an app called something like "Heart Rate Monitor Watch Face" and it seems to have no issues whatsoever to show me my Heart Rate in real time.
It showes between 70 and 80 when im relaxed. Just the normal Heart Rate sensor that comes with google fit doesn't work squat...
Thanks for the replies though! I guess the heart rate sensor on the LG G Watch R is indeed just a nice gadget, but no real tool
Cheers

Well I'm fat and young so yea 180 is pretty normal for me.
I've been using my LG G Watch R daily for over a year and even with screen always on and a "normal" set of notification the battery lasted 1.5 - 2 days.
Got the Android Wear 2 update two days ago and now the watch can't even last until I go to bed. It's empty after about 14 hours.
Anyone else experiencing this, or have any tips?
I have simmilar situation.

Found that to be the case initially but after a factory reset, cache dump, and installing only the apps I really use, it has since normalized to something acceptable (but not great).
On AW 1.5 it used 30% in an average 12 hour work day of limited use (but screen always on). Now on AW 2.0, it used roughly 40% yesterday under the same parameters and is on track for about the same today (small sample size, I know). So yes AW 2.0 uses more battery than its predecessor, but it's not terrible and hopefully in future updates this can be improved upon.
My theory for which watches were slated to qualify for AW 2.0 centers around battery life: only those watches with decent battery life would get it because Google knew it would consume more than AW 1.5. Probably not the whole story but could be part of it.
I have similiar situation. I will try to remove/disable as much as I can. Custom ROM will be probably the best solution, it will be more exciting than aw 2.0.
Guys wait for a couple of days. The system is still updating in background. Once it is completed, battery life goes back as AW1.5 at least this is my experience
Inviato dal mio iPhone utilizzando Tapatalk
With me battery drained quickly after install. After leaving it for a few days, updating the apps that I use and removing the ones that it just opted to install because they were on my phone, it normalized quite well.
Then I thought "hrm, since it's a major update, maybe just factory reset and start anew".
Now the watch runs about 1.5 days while recording my heartrate on the watches sensor every 15 minutes and about an hour a day of it being paired with my Wahoo chest strap displaying detailed heartrate on my watch itself.
The important thing to remember is that now actual apps get installed on the Watch instead of just face interfaces and other ultra light interfaces. It'll take a while for things to normalize, but the battery life isn't exceptionally worse then before for me after a full reset and some care taken in what I installed on the watch itself.
This is my battery life with stock 2.0 with the 2 core boot IMG. Similar battery life as I had before.

Most often I used a BTLE watchface that pairs with a BT heartrate monitor. But now that Google Wear is really just Android, you can use full fledged HRM apps and pair the HRM with sports trackers right on your phone (granted, those use a ton of battery, while the watchface was rather soft on the battery usage.

That really sucks since AOD uses a lot more battery. If basically causes the phone to burn an additional 1% per hour when in stand by.

Exactly. Pretty sure Google thought of everything on this device. The software may need some tuning, but that's it. The framework is solid

That may be true. Although we still don't know how much power the motion sense sensor uses. The motion sense senor is basically radar. It's sending out radio waves and detecting what comes back. That takes power too. It's possible that the motion sense sensor always running will use just as much battery than AOD does. It could even use MORE battery than AOD.

LOL! I agree with most of what I've seen you post, but this? C'mon. Google consistently misses things when their phones are first released. Google routinely does not think of everything, at least not at first launch anyway. Often times they only seem to be aware of issues after hundred of users report on it.

I loled when i read that to. I was just telling my friend who works at Verizon and is trying to get me to upgrade that ill wait till people get it in hand as pixels are known to have phone breaking bugs at launch lol
I go through a lot of phones and all had problems, some of them never got fixed. I'm doubtful this phone will be any different than every phone before it in that regard. AOD uses power, no lie, I like it so I leave it on. Turning it off is no answer, I get that. What I don't get is turning off all the cool features a phone has to save batt when charging is everywhere, it's quick, and portable supplies are cheap, work well, and will get you through a pinch. This phone will likely have 4 or more hours without skimping on anything. To me the win is playing with the toys I bought, not gimping them to save battery life which can be easily and well covered.
This isn't a call out BTW, I just don't understand the thought process.
having an LED notification light is better than not having one. There's plenty of room. The Pixel 4 has a lower screen to body ratio than the S8. And while the S8 has an annoying curved screen, it has an LED notification light. It can coexist with an AOD. You can turn one off and use the other. Just like the headphone jack argument IMO. And the LED notification light is just so useful. It's a shame that app that lets you customise it got neutered by Google's updates to Android.
Oh and it sucks that there isn't an SD card either. It makes sense to companies as they can push paid cloud storage but not to customers.

Doesn't make sense to add as card support, as this still is a hack - as has been on Linux based systems for years - and thus a security risk. It actually doesn't make any sense to add a hack to my system. Just my 2 cents.

Well that's good news. That stand by time is better than I thought it would be with the radar sensor but still not what I got from my Pixel 2 XL when it was new. I dropped about 2-3% over 8 hours. Even now after 2 years I still only see about 4% over 8 hours.
