[HELP] What about RAW shooting? - P8 Lite (2017) Discussion

Hello there everybody,
I recently purchased a brand new Huawei P8 Lite 2017 (also known as P9 lite 2017, Honor 8 lite etc. in some countries) and I was really happy to get one at almost 140$. I also bought it since everyone on the net was praising the excellent camera for this phone range. I was super-happy when I also stated that it was supporting camera2api; which means I can take RAW/DNG photos with the stock camera app or other proper applications.
Unfortunately, something was wrong: even if the phone can actually take RAW photos with apps such like OpenCamera and stuff, the result is not what I (and probably everybody else) was expecting. The files are kind of missing a color channel (red one, I think), which makes the photos almost useless, since the saturation is messed up and I can't even fix it with heavy Lightroom editing. I just don't understand why it behaves like that. Am I missing anything?
Or does a hidden RAW enable feature exist like in the P9 lite and must it be unlocked by file editing ?(https://www.xda-developers.com/guide-enables-raw-capture-in-the-stock-huawei-p9-lite-camera).
Is there a custom ROM that can actually implement this feature or will it ever be one?
Thanks for the answers.

Did you solve this? I have the same problem probably. From what I could gather the red and blue channels come out swapped. So I just made a preset in photoshop using the channel mixer. Even so the images still have to be heavily adjusted, retouched around the center and they're softer around the edges.
I didn't see many people complaining online and your thread has no answers, so I though to maybe leave this information here. It's weird that the stock camera app works well, but I'm still in warranty so lets see what huawei can do about this.

shooting in raw gives severe vignetting ?

i send a raw dng to lightroom and only the very center part of the image is properly exposed ?
I saw this in several other examples of 40mp shots. Seems inevitable with that many pixels in such a small sensor, likely can be remedied to a reasonable extent in Lightroom or similar. I don't know what people are expecting from 40mp shots here, it's obvious they'll be significantly compromised?
Raw is raw, so no preprocessing to remove the vignetting has been done. Create a lens profile in your favourite Raw converter or wait untill someone else did that job.
The raw benefits are there to reap, THANKS Huawei.
Ender
This was shot in 10mp mode (or is raw always 40mp ?)
I've locate other raws on the net that has the same effect.
at http://www.photographyblog.com/reviews/huawei_p20_pro_review/sample_images/
It's not only that everything becomes darker at the edges, there is also a blue/green color cast.
This would make shooting in raw a real nightmare ?

Ok thanks for the reply , i understand that raw is supposed to be unprocessed sensor data , but i never considered that the exposure changes from center to edge of lense would be that bad.
I still hope that it has something to do with the multiple lenses , and maybe the data from one of the lenses is not properly processed in raw.
I had some similar trouble with the super ccd Fujifilm S3 Pro.
Hi,
no, itj just vignetting, something existing even on $10k lenses, just not as obvious.
Its all good & perfect, if you cannot create a lens profile for yourself, try Automatic or wait until someone in-the-know did so.
Ender
Vignetting is strong, but the biggest problem is the severe green tint around the centre and the purple tint in the middle of the image, it takes additional steps to fix this. Fixing vignetting is pretty easy, however, you will just increase the noise.
The problem is the small lens. You have to cover bigger sensor and you need bigger elements for that. Also, the lens is of pretty bad quality, quite soft, especially when you are not looking in the centre of the image.
I hope people understand what it actually mean to shoot in RAW :silly:

Yes i know what raw file's are.
And you can only spot these lens imperfections using the raw file , since they are corrected away in the the processed jpg files.
Hence the title of the topic.
The P20 pro is the first time i'm peeking at raw files on such a tiny sensor/lens device. My other lenses are a bit more uniform across the image, so that surprised me a bit.
Makes me appreciate the auto jpg's on this phone a bit more, they already do a lot of work.
So far i am really in love with the night shot and silky water modes.

If we are into technical specification, its due to the larger sensor used in P20 Pro, its harder to provide even light/brightness when sensor size used is larger. Corner will have less brightness and sharpness.
Its like trying to cover a square piece of paper area using a bottom of our drinking glass. It will always left corner area uncovered.
This is also happening to most of Full Frame DSLR and Mirrorless professional camera.
We need a bigger (much bigger) honestly to technically fix this flaw. But that will come in cost of portability. And even by then, we still need to think about the light trajectory, because if there are to many light fall outside if sensor area, that would also cost us the image quality
Thats why company choose to use software solution to overcome this. And that what we see in 10MP mode, where the result already processed by the imaging engine. Removing vignette and adding sharpness. Aside from color toning of course.
For me, 40MP and RAW mode is to be used when i know that i gonna use the image professionally and gonna need to tweak it myself later using lightroom or photoshop. (Or even snapseed if am on high mobility)

I read something about a quad bayer sensor beeing used.
Is there any benifit in shooting at 10MP in relation to dynamic range ?
I other words is there more going on then just averaging pixels when 10MP mode is used ?
Like documented in the the sony IMX294CJK sensor ?
It uses a Quad Bayer structure, and outputs data binned in 2 × 2 pixel units in normal mode. In HDR mode, integration can be divided into long-time integration and short-time integration for each 2 pixels in the Quad array. In this case there is no time difference between long-time integration and short-time integration, which realizes HDR with little blending offset when imaging moving subjects "
Hi,
Look at this post where we can see the same issue with dng files for the LG G4 (until LG fixed it with the Marshmallow software update).
What's happening here is that there is no flat field correction embedded in the P20 pro dng file; when opening the dng in Lightroom for example, it's going to have strong vignetting and color cast in the corners.
I currently have a Mate 10 Pro and the issue with dng files is the same (I had to build my own profile). However I also had a P9 where the dng files were fine, so it doesn't look like that providing a DNG with flat field correction is now a priority for Huawei. We are very few users shooting RAW and complaining about this, which may explain this.
I have ordered a P20 Pro Twilight and should receive it hopefully at the end of next week (knowing that the estimated delivery date was delayed muliple times...).
I will create a correction profile and share it here.

Can u then please share with me that lens profile ? I am unable to get it right on my p20 Pro
I don't have the phone yet, but sure I will do it afterwards (hopefully by the end of the month).
I received the phone today and using my previous methodology of profile creation, I don't get satisfying results. I guess I will stick with JPEG for the moment, hoping that Huawei will fix the dng profile like LG did with the G4.
Dont worry OP, your phone is not faulty ..
Even though SONY Xperias dont support RAW, thay are a little like this too.. at the 19 or 23mpx setting... you do get a certain amount of barrel distortion towards the edges of the image.. It may be that Huawei look at this and try to do something, but it is normal at 40mpx.
One of the things I do to help this in my Street/Candid Photography with my Canon.. is try to keep your subject in the centre and as big as you can.. what goes on at the edges of your image is often just waste anyway.. also Use Tap to focus (Tap on your subject on the screen), by doing this, you set the cameras light metre to Centre Weighted, therefore setting optimal light settings, which prevents your subject being "blown out" or poorly lit in the image.. With Tiny camera sensors try to drop your horizon, so you avoid placing your subject against a bright sky or background, unless your using "Fill in" flash on the main area..
Dont forget, this phone is less than 6 weeks old and other than the NOKIA 1020, this type of Imaging sensor hasnt been done before, so Huawei/Leica might tweak the camera sensor with updates if the barrelling is that bad.. but until then.. stick with jpg if you can..
Hope that helps
Make your own correction profile in your processing software.

I finally managed to create a profile that provides satisfactory results. You can download it here.
The instructions are the same than the ones provided in this post. The only difference is that under "Image Correction Options", I set up the Luminance value to 1 and Chroma value to 1.

Thank you so much, this works wonderfully!!! :good: The RAW files look great now and are so much easier to edit in Lightroom! That color cast was truly a nightmare!!!
Is there such a tool for Android? Or do we have to wait if Huawei will somehow correct their RAW with an update?
This is a GREAT topic!
Learned a lot.

First time Huawei, first time P20 Pro - few questions

Hello people,
I'm a long time Xiaomi-User.
I saw this phone for 300€ (used, but perfect condition) and decided to buy it and give it a chance.
If it would be not that great (for me, ofcourse), I'd sell it and buy the Mi 9, since I love MIUI.
But yeah, since I already ordered it, here are my questions:
1. Am I going to hate EMUI? (maybe someone has experience with both MIUI and EMUI)
2. How's the camera after all the updates? I watched YouTube videos but since most of the good videos are old, I thought I should ask here.
- low light?
- OIS working as it should?
- video stabilisation? are videos really that bad?
- selfie?
- other?
3. Battery should be good? Over 6 hours SoT possible?
4. Any other useful tips for me, as a newcommer to Huawei/P20 Pro? Some must have know-hows?
Thanks!

Hello. I will answer,of course with my personal opinions.
I work in IT,so I talk a lot on the phone, and I receive plenty of emails,I even browse 9gag a lot,Facebook, and still I get 1 day and a half of battery...so don't worry(but I also stopped from startup most of the apps, except the ones I want notifications from, usually messaging apps),and I manually Debloated it(you can uninstall system apps using ADB,without root and without unlocking the bootloader,so no problems with warranty - I just removed apps like Chrome,Google AI,google photos, google music, google Duo,google Drive).
I never used a Xiaomi,so I don't know how much you will like the interface, but it's easy to use once you get used to it.
You can even activate a drawer for apps if you don't like apps directly on home screen, notifications can be changed to "unread" instead of the default one with a dot on the app(I use unread,I like it better,so I know how many notifications I have per app).
Cameras are great(I hope your device is alright, since it's not new).
I have the european version with update 9.0.0.195
Cameras are really good with AI,and you have a Master AI slider,so you can disable it. An advice: after updating to latest version, wipe cache partition from Recovery(turn off the phone, then hold the volume + while turning it on,and do not release volume + button until it enters the recovery, then wipe cache partition).
After booting, just go to settings - apps - Camera - storage and wipe data for this app,so it will not use the old files from old version.
And an advice for photos with multiple people(doesn't matter if you use the selfie camera or back cameras).
When you're making group photos, with multiple persons, disable the portrait mode either by touching the little X besides the "Portrait mode",or by sliding to "Photo" mode. Because if portrait is enabled,it will focus on one person and blur the others...it seems it's not for multiple persons. Someone told me it's the same on Mate 20 Pro.
Video stabilization is not enabled when filming in 4K,but it works well with 1080p 60 fps(it's better on emui 9 than on emui 8).
Hope I helped. Cheers!

I recently moved from Mi 6 to P20 Pro. I actually like EMUI more than MIUI.
First of all I'm a big fan of app drawer which is missing from MIUI and can be enabled in EMUI.
To my taste EMUI 9 looks (icons, settings order etc.) and works (animation smoothness, power management) better than MIUI 10.
Although both those things are only personal preference.
2. How's the camera after all the updates? I watched YouTube videos but since most of the good videos are old, I thought I should ask here.

I'm a bad photographer, but even I manage to do some good pictures on P20 Pro. Night mode is great, and overall the camera software is way more polished than what I had on Mi 6. I can't compare difference in camera between EMUI 8 and EMUI 9 because I upgraded pretty much straight ahead.

I don't usually check SoT, but overall battery life is great. On average I charge the phone every 36 hours (usually when ~20% left). With Mi 6 is was a bit less.

1. As already mentioned - Use debloat to uninstall apps that you don't need (use with caution).
2. Disable automatic power management for apps you want to run constantly (Settings -> Battery -> App launch).
3. Learn how to use the Camera app.
4. Don't expect for very fast Android updates (as MIUI user you should be familiar with that).
@exodus394 , @arty_a ,
first of all, thanks for your answers!
My P20 Pro arrived today and I'm still testing everything.
I'm pretty happy with everything except maybe the camera. I couldnt test it 100% but the photos I took with the phone, arent that great.
Especially the night mode. I could almost say, it's maybe 20% better than with normal mode.. I dont know, maybe I'm doing something wrong.
I used gcam (google camera) on my Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 and the Night mode on gcam was like 50 times better than on P20 Pro, although Xiaomi doesnt have that good camera as P20 Pro has.
I already wiped cache via recovery and deleted cache+data from the camera app, but it's still not good.
Anything I could do wrong here?
I was thinking about debloating and will do it now.
@arty_a ,
what are the benefits of disabling the automatic power managment for apps?
If it's enabled, do I stop getting notifications for some apps? (like MIUI had a problem with)
And, what do you mena with "Learn how to use the Camera app"? Manual mode or something else?
Thanks again guys!

I think there is something wrong with your unit. P20 Pro is the best at night and low light photos. I even took photos in environments where I barely could see something with naked eye,but the phone took a lot of details, more than I could see...no phone can do that better at the moment.

Exactly that.
In addition some apps can fail to autostart when triggered by other app (Waze + Spotify, AndroidAuto + pretty much everything). It's very annoying and frustrating when you run into it for the first time.

Just check all the settings and modes you have, like "Beauty" and "Light" in Portrait mode, Pro mode where you can control pretty much everything, "More" where you have the slow-mo and a lot of other stuff.
Regarding "Night mode" try using it when it's really dark, not just low lite situation, that is where it shows its full power.
Very interesting thread. My question has to do with security. Since we all know about the allegations that have been thrown at Huawei about not being a secure phone since it is manufactured in China, what steps can the average Joe take to make this phone more safe without installing a custom ROM. I've already done the de-bloating steps listed here. Thanks in advance

I apologize in advance for being harsh.
First of all - if you want to learn about this stuff go do some research, I mean, at least 5 first pages of google, don't ask anonymous people on a forum.
One of the things you will learn is that main concern about Huawei are not phones but other, enterprise, products - cellular network controllers, servers etc. Spying on people over phones is cool but not efficient, spying over governments and enterprises over their backbone and communication infrastructure is very efficient and scary.
Now, let me split my answer into 2 parts:
1) If you are concerned over hardware, don't use a smartphone at all. All manufacturers either produce their phones in China or at least use some hardware produced in China. If the Chinese want to physically bug your phone they will, even if it's an iPhone.
2) If you are concerned over software, then again, it's not only Huawei, pretty much any non-American manufacturer (Hauwei, Xiaomi, LG, even Samsung) can overnight push an OTA that will add "spying" software and I bet it will not be found immediately.
Now, if you are concerned about privacy and not security then:
1) If you use Apple or Google account you are already willingly give away a lot of your information to be processed by them.
2) If you have any social media account you do the same in addition to making parts of that information publicly accessible.
3) Regarding phone specific vendor (Huawei in this case) - don't use any vendor specific services (Huawei ID, built in Email app, AppGallery, etc.)
P.S. Custom ROMs can contain some "bad things" too.

On GCam Pink/Purple Distorted Photos Problem

Many people complain about this and seems like few know about the issue. I should say that I'm not a dev, I just figured it out and tired of writing it after each complaint, which is why I write it as a new thread.
So, in short, there are ways in which gcam speaks with the camera. With RN8(t), we need the app use raw10 rather than raw_sensor for us to be able to have photos. This means that you need a version which either shoots with raw10 by default, or lets you switch from raw_sensor to raw10.
Sadly(?) there are not many that allows this, and almost all are version 6.x ones except Nikita's. The modders I found that allow switch or use raw10 are Nikita, overwhelmer, fu24, wyroczen, and trCam of tigr. There can be others, these are just those that I found. and I did not try each and every one of them. So if you are suffering from this problem, go for these modders' versions.
I may add that I like to use Parrot043's mod, as its output is practically what I want, yet unfortunately it is not usable without raw_sensor. Like his/hers, Arnova8G2's, BSG's, and many others' mods don't (didnt?) work. Yet as they are making new builds every now and then, maybe they will include a switch later on.
I should note that neither of those that I tried can do (good) astrophoto - or it was the case for me. Also none of these managed to produce good shadows (shadows in both Photoshop sense, shadows as shadows, and the transitive area between blacks and whites). On the other hand, it can be a problem with my device as I have seen people shooting pretty fine photos with these - including, interestingly, astrophotos. I just try and wrote my experience. Do NOT rely solely on my experience. Go and try for yourselves. This is just a starting point for those of you that have the problem, not an ultimate guide.
About auxiliary cameras, I cannot say much as I had them working at some point (with a fix from PA devs, I forgot the name of the dev and the patch sadly, and with fu24's version), yet now again they are broken. Funny part is that Paranoid Android claims to have them all working from the start, and other than me, I saw no one complaining that wide and macro don't work. Probably something is broken with my mobile, which is why I cannot say much on the issue.
Of the custom ROMs, I have found only Paranoid Android allowing shooting with raw_sensor. It might be the case with some other ROMs, so you better go check it out for yourselves as well. I can confirm that Pixel Experience and LineageOS did not allow shooting with raw_sensor, but it can change as well. Everything, as we know, comes down to the devs. This is just my experience, and I do not test each and every ROM every other day.
I hope that this will be useful for you, and there won't be complaints about pink/purple lines. This is because of GCam, not ROM builders as such. You can, surely, "force" the ROM builders to include raw_sensor shooting, yet it's up/down to them to do it or not.
So, I hope that this will help you to have a better idea about the problem, and you can solve it easily/easier.

Question Mi 11 Ultra user guide/camera guide?

Hi All
Has anyone a link to a user guide for the phone? I didn't get a paper one and although I can use a phone and install apps with ease, there are lots and lots of camera features which I'm finding out by experimentation.
I've emailed Xiaomi, but don't expect an answer and couldn't find the user guide on the Xiaomi site. For example, I didn't find the macro setting much use, but 5x zoom in Photo mode works MUCH better.
Thanks for reading...
Steve
ps I did a couple of timings and did the following:
1) Charge up to 100% and play the "Norwegian Train Ride" video on YouTube.
The phone lasted 11.5 hours before turning off.
2) Charged it back up to 100% with the 67W charger (that USB cable is thick!)
It took 50 minutes to charge back up to 100%

Hi @justintime thanks for your reply. I took a look on Youube but I think most of the shootlikeapro videos are for other xiaomi phones.
I'll carry on experimenting (guessing) and report what I find here in case it helps anyone else.
So far I've found this:
The macro mode isn't much different to normal mode and my Note10 is much better than the Ultra. However, using the 2x or 5x zoom instead works very well.
Night mode is amazing! Night pics look like daylight pics
Next up I'm going to play with time lapse and night mode time lapse so I'll post up here.
Cheers
Steve
Oh yes, my note10 pro took 8 seconds to post-process a night picture and the Ultra takes 3 seconds. Snapdragon 888. num num num.
Ok next up is daytime time lapse.
To use it you open the camera, choose More and Time-lapse.
On the left of the screen, you get a timer icon and if you touch this, you get speed and duration options. For the duration, you can choose a set time, or infinity so it will record forever, or until your storage is full.
For the speed, you can set it from 4x to 180x. I tried a time lapse of the clouds at 4x, but the speed was not fast enough for what I wanted, but 30x was just dandy.
So I think the speed setting is a multiplier for the output speed, so 4x is 4x faster than normal etc.
Tonight it's a night mode time lapse. To access this, you choose more/movie effects/ Night Time lapse ( I think! )
Anyway, I'll post up when I have some results

Ok next up is daytime time lapse.
To use it you open the camera, choose More and Time-lapse.
On the left of the screen, you get a timer icon and if you touch this, you get speed and duration options. For the duration, you can choose a set time, or infinity so it will record forever, or until your storage is full.

Oh yes, something else I forgot. When you record time lapse, the screen goes black apart from a ring timer showing you the duration so far. I guess this saves battery
Well I tried night time lapse last night. The phone was on battery and was dead in the morning. The video was saved just fine. The results weren't very good, nowhere near as good as the demo night time lapse in More/Movie Effects. It just looks like a normal video with no night enhancements and was quite dark. Maybe I did something wrong :-(
I've just updated to MIUI 12.5.4 and according to the page below, it includes 13 camera enhancements, including night mode, so I'll give it a go tonight.

Another issue is camera access. I've tried a few camera2 api checkers from the Play Store, but all only show 2 cameras , front (1) and back (0) which is a bit dissapointing as I'd quite like to use other camera apps and choose the lens. Hm......
The nice part is they both support LEVEL_3 and RAW output.
Cheers Steve
After even more searching, I found the following user guide:
User manuals (English) - Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra - [placeholder | TechBone
The user manuals (English) of the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra online or as direct download.
www.techbone.net
It's lacking in a lot of detail, but gives some clues.

Ok I'm stuck. I can't find out how to do night video that's any good. The ROM update didn't help so if anyone knows how to do it, please let me know so I can stop buggering about.

So two things I've noticed that have helped improve my night mode video recording from initial testing so far is to turn off AI mode and if possible, use a handheld tripod/stabilizer if you have one. Seems to help a lot in both 1080p and 4k 30fps.
Hi @kyero985 thanks for your reply. AI is turned off and I have a Joby Gorillapod which I use for night video. The videos have very low colour rendering, almost a black and white version.
I'll post up a screen grab of my night video for reference as soon as I can.

I've attached a screenshot of a night video which seems very poor to me. Also attached is another screen shot from a camera2 API checker on the play store. Disappointingly, it only lists 2 cameras which is irritating. I guess I need to root it and enable camera2 API?

I think the 2 cameras being detected in camera2 API checkers (front & main cam) is normal. I had the Vivo X51 Pro (also known as Vivo X50 Pro in some markets) and it was the same.
HOWEVER, when using Google Camera ports from BSG with the Snapcam package signature, ALL cameras are detected and can be used. Hopefully it's the same thing with Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra.
Hi All
I just installed EU Weekly ROM 21.6.16 Beta and the camera seems improved. Notably the screen lag when zooming at high factors.
The ROM above was offered OTA so I downloaded the zip, booted to TWRP, wiped the Dalvik cache and installed it without any backups (eek) and it all worked fine. No data loss or anything.
It's tricky to find the subject at high zooms, couple that with screen lag of the image and it's even harder.
Now the screen updates really fast so congrats to the EU ROM team!
I also noticed the Macro seems better and more able to get closer to the image. Also previoulsy night mode video didn't seem to work very well. Hardly any colour information so almost a black-and-white image (see above).
It's light here in the UK now (6pm) so when it's darker (around 9pm) I'll give it a bash and report back. Fingers crossed!
Cheers

Thanks for sharing your feedback! I'm tempted to flash the EU Weekly ROM myself too as I'm keen on testing the potential all-round camera improvements too.
I'm still on 12.5.7 CN Stable myself and don't have many complaints as it's come a long way since the stock firmware but I am really curious and feeling up to do more testing.
No problem. That's what we're all here for, to share our experiences to hopefully help others.
Obviously I'm going to say you should always backup before flashing, but as I had backed up the previous day so took the risk.
My backup regime for data I care about is:
SMS
SMS backup and restore:
SMS Backup & Restore - Apps on Google Play
A simple app that backs up and restores SMS & MMS messages and call logs.
play.google.com
Backs up up message to Google Drive
====================================================
Whatsapp:
Settings/Chats/Chat backup
====================================================
Photos:
Copy entire DCIM folder and sub-folders to PC
====================================================
/SteveData
My documents etc.
Copy folder and sub-folders to PC
====================================================
Calendar:
Automatically backed up to Google Drive
====================================================
This regime has served me well across multiple ROMs.

Thanks for the tip! I'll be able to unlock my BL this Sunday so I'm looking forward to flashing the 24/06 EU Weekly which should be out by then. I'm ready to format my data and use TWRP to complete this process.
I'll be posting some photo comparisons too as I have done previously. How big of an improvement have you noticed over the previous stable?
Hi that's what these forums are for eh? Sharing info for all to see. Th mani improvement I notices was improvement on the camera lag issue. This was noticable when you try to zoom at high factors. Clearly at high zoom, it's hard to steady the camera, but even harder when the screen image lags behind.
I'm on EU weekly now MIUI 12.6 21.6.23 beta and it seems fine.
Cheers
Steve
As promised, I flashed the EU 21.6.23 Weekly today from CN 12.5.7 and everything's working well so far. Thanks for all your advice so far. A few things I've noticed about the camera so far:
1. All levels of Zoom are incredibly stable now. Even at 120x (not that you'd want to use it a lot), it hardly shakes or stutters. Quality of zoomed-in photos are better as a result since it can stabilize and lock-on more quickly. However, anything over 40x is still unusable imo.
2. Night Mode photos are a tiny bit better. There's a bit more detail and clarity and slightly less noise all-round in all of my low light sample shots. Handheld Night Mode Zoom shots are considerably better due to the stabilization improvement on the telephoto lens since you need to be still for about 5 seconds anyway.
3. Taking photos up close is better now. No, it's still not on the same level as the S21 Ultra since that phone still takes the best macro mode shots from what I've seen, but it is noticeable and a small step-up over 12.5.7.

Question Backup to google?

is that another limitation as well? I can seem to backup device to google drive. As far as I read from all the threads, Android Auto, location history did not work. But I didnt see backing up device to google (and restoring).
Just wondering and sorry if I missed it somewhere on the threads.

It doesn't work too even when it's rarely mentioned.
ok..Thats that .
Thanks
There are plenty more google services just not as widely used that don't work.
E g. Google Play Services for AR (formerly ARCore). Some Vivo China OS devices support it, others don't according to google compatibility list. It kinda stops at x50 pro however (with x80 vanilla being the odd newer exception). You can side load it but then you also need to side load / apk install any app that is AR only on Play store.
It should be offered in vivo appstore if compatible for vivo devices but x90 pp doesn't list it.
I'm not sure if for example pokemon Go works however. On a first try it only showed AR instead of AR+ which it should show with ARCore. If it only enables AR+ with full google compatibility indicated it will not work. If it can be set to just ignore compatibility it will work.
Google assistant barely works (no conversation, no hotword). Quite a few other missing things here and there ( not sure how many can be partly solved by side loading)
worse thing is Im hooked on this phone...but everyday theres a little bit of you cant do this and cant do that...shame. because if they did a global version its a winner..
I am wondering how funtouch 13 compares to color OS...almost tempted to try the x90 pro global as the 1 inch camera and the hardware I am sold on.
I am still struggling with notifications on lock screen only, and things like nearby share dont work..like little things that add up.....

Not possible to use Google backup on a phone without root for me is a huge problem, not a small one. Because it means days to restore should you move to another phone respectively should you need to hard reset....
But yeah in principle it's a great hardware (except modem, some sensors like compass and the slow charging on PD chargers plus the uber sensitivity to charging cables), just software that hits a few bugs every single day.
I really feel you need to be a die hard Vivo fanboy to overlook those problems.
Buying a Xiaomi virtually anyone outside China just flashes xiaomi.eu custom ROM. Very different situation. Same for OnePlus just flash to global (though with OnePlus 11 this got mighty complicated especially with region lock)..
But for example for AR vivo 90 pro global isn't certified either, so that actually had nothing much to do with google. Other Chinese brands certify all their midranger and flagships because it affects also all Chinese apps that want to use AR as it's the only AR platform for Android. And yes side loading works but if the system reports it cannot do it, while it can it poses app developers into big problems. If they just enable AR features for all phones then those who didn't side load the AR services will get bugs...
If you want the 1" sensor just wait for Xiaomi 13 Ultra and either get global directly or wait for a Xiaomi.eu ROM (many shops will pre flash). It will have the 1" sensor with variable aperture as it seems and that's a huge plus because in quite a lot of situations the bokeeh is too much (e.g food pictures). Or wait what Samsung does with the announced big camera update end of March (or use gcam on S23u, it's really dialled by now and way superior to stock and doesn't have the problems gcam has on X90pp). Then Pixel 8 pro should have 1/1.12" sensor too but that's a long wait...
The Magic 5 pro cannot really convince me for upgrade. They also botched the modem like Vivo and the zoom isn't too good. I would prefer it but not good enough vs s23U. Also it doesn't seem to use actual crop from full resolution for 2x portrait and some more limitations on camera.
