Pen sensitivity not equal on the screen - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

I've noticed lastely that my pen sensitivity is different in the middle of the screen compared to the corners. I have to press down the pen harder to actually write something, while on the corners I can write normally.,
This was not always the case, the problem appeared just recently. The pen has bad sensitivity in the middle regardless if I try to write or just scroll on a webpage with it.
Restarting the phone didn't help.
I have a custom rom which I have not upgraded for months now (I'm waiting on Oreo roms).
The digitizer seems to work fine when I use my fingers.
I have uploaded a screenshot testing the pen. The corners are where I gently just swiped with the pen. As you can see there's nothing in the middle.
Could this be software (rom) issue, digitizer losing response or the pen itself? Any ideas?

None of the above. The pen has its own sensor behind the screen. It got damaged somehow. Time for a warranty replacement.

do you have a case on the phone? any magnetic closure will cause exactly this

Correct, I suspected it and removed the case and it solved the problem.
I recently bought https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Zim...lloy-Metal-Cover-for-Samsung/32828780058.html
It's a fantastic case in every way, except that it makes Spen go crazy.
Will it cause any permanent damage or am I safe to continue using it?

It was the magnet messing around, the problem disappeared when I removed the case. Good thing I don't need to RMA this, I have 2-step verification for everything haha.

Glad it was easy!:good: I'm surprised a case would be made that interferes with the pen coils. That's annoying. Good thing it didn't permanently damage it. Having to RMA would have been lame. What case did you buy, I'm just curious.

I think it can damage over time. I remember similar reports on the Note 4 forum, but maybe something changed since then too.

It's a mystery to me, how some people still don't know that magnets and phones don't go along ?

The phone works fine, it's only the Spen which is not working well.
Besides, there are already magnets in phone speakers.

I've read that magnets won't damage the phone, unless it's a really strong magnet like a MRI scanner. I won't be coming near any of those anytime soon.
The only thing that would be temporarily affected is the compass, which I don't use, and Spen in this case, which I use rarely.

Doh! Just breezed right over that. That's a pretty crazy case.

just about every folding case on amazon has a magnet in it that will affect the spen usage.
just a warning to everyone.

Yep even a small magnet for the latch causes mine to curve away.

[Q] Screen cracked, touch not responding properly.

Hey everyone.
A few months ago I dropped my phone for the first time. It turned out that the screen had gotten a large crack down through the middle, running all the way from the top to the bottom. I tried using it, and the touch capabilities didn't seem to be affected, so basically it was just cosmetic at first.
But this afternoon, after having used it lightly since morning without issues, the phone suddenly started responding weird to touch. Whenever I touch the screen, it registers touches all over the screen, and I'm not even able to dial in my pin code after rebooting.
Does anyone have an idea what might have happened, what is broken, and how much it will set me back to fix it?
BTW, the phone arrived with a red pixel, I noticed it once when booting up, but thought it was just a bug or something. Later I found out that is actually a fault with the phone, and most companies have dead pixel policies, I'm wondering, is it possible to return the phone for a new because of the red pixel?
Thank you for your time.
I think it will be a little hard to prove that dead pixel after being cracked. If you have some skills, you can change it yourself, its not very hard and you can find the screen on the internet.

That does sound good, but aren't the glass (The outermost layer) and the touchscreen two different things entirely?
Thank you.
Well what do you know, it started working again! Well, atleast for now.
Thanks for the advice

...I'm going to go out on a limb here and say it's the huge crack down the middle of the screen? :good:
Seriously, though.. capacitive touch-screens measure changes in the resistance across a thin layer on top of the glass. So if you bend it somehow, or damage it (say, stretch it because the glass underneath cracks), then the resistance won't be picked up, or it will be registered inaccurately. So it might work for a while, or work reasonably well. Know a guy who smashed his iPhone.. sat on it, actually.. and it worked with "cracked" glass (that was held together by the layer on top of the glass, right) until he bought another iPhone. *shrug* He talked about it a lot, but it didn't seem to really make a difference on the actual phone.

Lockscreen bug with smartcover and battery drain

Hello everyone,
I bought on ebay this smartcover since I saw that lots of people were talking great about it (like being the best cover for Nexus 7). After some days of use, I found out that my lockscreen bugs quite a lot and I'm not always able to unlock my device if it's in the smartcover, and yesterday I found out a strange use of the system, like it drained my whole battery without using it.
Anyone is experiencing same issue? Shall I go for another cover?
Thanks everyone,
Tiwiz

I actually can't believe you just posted this, I've had this case for a couple of months and literally last night started putting the battery issue down to the fact that the case/cover may be waking the tablet when it shouldnt.
Also I've noticed that maybe like 50% of the time, when you open the cover it doesn't unlock, other half of the time it does?
Same issues?!

Seems were in the same boat here, as I went through 3 cases until I found this.
Loved it but these issues are doing my head in.
From what I can see, if you close the case, then turn it to its front, the front of the case is still raised.
This could cause the sensor to think its not closed sometimes?
I dno, just pondering.
But do it and tell me if your case does this, like if you look at it from the front and top, theres a gap between the case and screen.
I hope you understand what I'm saying there

Thats what I believe it is, due to the front part of the cover not actually touching the screen EVER, I'm just thinking that every so often, the Nexus just thinks its not there, wakes up and then the cover is activated again and then goes back to sleep, then back into deepsleep.
Thats my theory, but I'm still keeping the case, its great

I have another case shown with another problem, used to get random screen offs, then it become more worse over time, to the point whilst I was actively using the tablet the screen would go off constantly, i now use it it out of the case until now to take a photo.....guess what? I couldn't type in my pin number.
Makes me think that with my problems and the OP problems, may I know why the official cases from Asus don't have a magnet inside.
Just a thought.

I have more or less the same cover (mine has a leather piece that covers the bezel... which doesn't bother me). It does work well and it looks great. And I've had no issues with the smart lock (but my N7 is set to go into airplane mode whenever the cover closes, so that may have something to do with it). I would recommend it.

To be clear, I was talking about the one you posted, not the one from the original poster.
As I said, mine is a bit different than that one... http://www.hipstreet.com/hipstreet-asus-google-nexus-7-rotating-case/
The rotating is the best part of the cover. I know people who have smart covers that fold back and the magnets turn off the screen from behind. I can just rotate mine and avoid that problem. Also, as shown in the promo pictures, the rotating is good for standing the pad up in both portrait and landscape. When it's closed it looks like a moleskine notebook, so I can carry it to work and meetings and look professional.
That said, it did fall of the top of my counter onto a tile floor and landed on its side with no damage. No guarantees, but I was happy.
(And I got it cheaper than the MSRP from Staples Canada... $29 as I recall.)
I have the same case as the OP and I have issues with it locking itself when its open but that may be the magnet triggering the lock from the back side of the device. I've also noticed some battery drain with the cover closed, almost as if its being locked/unlocked throughout the day.

S-pen replacement and calibration

This is a two part question.
Firstly does anyone know if there is a way to calibrate the s-pen. Mine seems ever so slightly off when writing as I would with a normal pen (on a slight angle).
I also have the bamboo feel but that is even worse (around 2-3 mm off).
Next question is are there any other s-pen out that like the bamboo feel? I like the bigger size of it as it's more comfortable for writing with but accuracy seems to be the issue with some third part pens. I'm surprised there issue nothing from Samsung already for the note 5. I understand there are the pen holder or the bt pen but those are for older devices so I'm not sure how accurate they are or compatible.

Can you make sure that there is no cover when trying, as magnetic covers or even flip covers cause the S-pen to be inaccurate.
in older models, magnet closure cases made a huge difference.

Try typing in *#0*# in your dialer. This will bring up the integrated hardware test. There should be one for S-Pen (not touch) and try it on that screen. If it does not pass the test, then you are probably looking at a hardware failure/malfunction.

I know this is an old post, but I am trying to find a gold s-pen. Samsung doesn't sell them on their site. To get mine warranties will take over a month. I have seen them on Amazon but really no where else. Wondering if anyone has tried them and any issues. Where do you recommend?

For what it is worth...
I have both a NOTE 3 and a NOTE 5
The 5 I only bought recently and the Stylus hole was blocked and there was some weird other stylus somehow wedged into it.
The previous owner knew he was selling me a duffer but there we go.
Anyway, I managed to get it out and I bought a new stylus for it, but the bloody thing was not quite right... It was something like about 1.5mm off down and right. I am very very good with sizes and so trust me, its more than 1mm but not quite 2mm but thats by the sideways... I just assumed that the bloody thing needs calibrating to this stylus.
Anyway, it was some time later that I thought... Why not try the note 3 and 5 styluses on each other... They both work just fine, but guess what? It was not the screen that needed calibrating at all? - the stylus is to blame.
The Note 5 stylus is wonky just the same on the Note 3 and the Note 3 Stylus is perfect on the Note 5
If only I could swap them over?
But there you go... Maybe its a new stylus or a replacement stylus you should be looking for and not a calibration of the screen?
yeah mines a few mm's off as well. its very annoying.
There is also a waycom test in the integrated hardware test menu (this would be good for seeing how your s-pen registers on the screen)
Also you may want to try another N5 s-pen (if you know someone that has one see how it does, the one you have may have a defect)
You can take off the cover on the button of the spen and there's a tuning adjuster under it. Factory is set to be off a little.

I tried Note 4 stylus on Note 5 and it felt like a Note 7 stylus on Note 7. Note 5 stylus is useless. in comparison.
So stupid that companies still make Note cases with friggin battery clips on them. But then again there seems to be a fair amount of people who buy these Note devices but rarely use the S-Pen which is bizarre to me.

Really annoying and Samsung just thinks I'm idiot telling me to do things like:
- Change the tips
- Hard Reset
[Solution]
Since nobody gave a damn and I searched REALLY HARD for a solution. I will take one step forward and help anyone who maybe will have this problem in the future.
What you will need:
- Glue ( I recommend a Glue Stick, since it fixes good and can be easily removed.)
- Aluminum Foil
- Scissor
You will have to crop a little rectangle and test in which height of your SPen the foil will stop the problem.
In mine happened this way:
too close to the tip and the pen won't be detected
Too far from the tip and the problem remains.
In this position all functions work as intended. See photo.
Hit thanks if I helped you!
I did not want to use warranty because I will hate to wait weeks without a cellphone.
You can paint the foil for aesthetics purposes as I will manage to do better than I did
The cropped foil can be in the minimum size you achieve to make it work. Foil is very thin so there is no problems in inputting and removing from the slot.
[UPDATE] [UPDATE] [UPDATE] [UPDATE] [UPDATE] [UPDATE] [UPDATE] [UPDATE] [UPDATE]
After several days I tried the pen without the foil stick and surprise ! It works as intended ! As I said eletromagnetism is tricky so you won't want the foil to be permanently glued to your pen.

Yes , but nothing that would cause severe damage. I always use my case and the problem started quite spontaneously.
And I don't think a fall damage would cause this problems in a perfectly squared portion of the screen
> I can use airviewing( in this square) in a uncommon distance (closer) what is a oxymoron because I write without touching in higher distances (WTH)

Please change the beginning of your solution section. Comes off very condescending and people do give a damn. Considering that I posted a question to you about it at 130am my time, and people probably just didn't have anything to say as they might not have an idea as to why the issue was happening, or didn't get a chance to browse the forum as yet.
Good hack either way with the aluminum foil. Does it cause any issues with charging the method of the pen? Have you used to pen to depletion and then see if it charges after?

Well, been using it for a few hours and I got no interference in bluetooth functions and neither in the recharging by induction. But what you said about recharging made me think that the smaller the foil crop... the better.

Nice. Have you thought of moving the hack into the pen? That'll be awesome to do and aid with aesthetics. I haven't gone to the point of taking one apart but it's probably just some 3m glue being used to hold the unit together.

That is something to consider but I don't feel comfortable messing with the insides of SPen since it's so fragile and intend to be water resistant. Maybe if I had more knowledge about it's structure...
3M glue I can say is something you won't desire. I wouldn't stick something permanently in/on the Spen. Electromagnetism is kind of tricky so the solution today can be the problem tomorrow. So easy removal should be preferred.
I use Gnacad quite a bit and the best I've achieved so far is to put the floating icon in the trash can (long press it) that seems to tone down it's sensitivity but it is still sensitive to the temperature and wether the screen sensitivity setting is set to screen protector or not and of course if a screen protector is used which I no longer use (paid for the gorilla might as well enjoy it.!

YES ! I just think exactly the same about the Gorilla Glass. I'm not paying for this and covering with some cheaper glass protector. I just take good care of my screen and it looks amazing !
Did you have this same ''drawing'' problem? Excuse my ignorance but... What is Gnacad?

Question Bad sensitivity spot issue

Hello,
I need some help from the xda community.
Just recently bought S21 Ultra, but I have an issue while using S pen with any application that has push sensitivity recognition just in one spot.
For example 'Infinite painter' or 'art flow' with sensitivity brush like 6B pencil.
I'm not completely sure that it is hardware (display) issue of this phone or all S21 Ultra have this issue.
I want to ask someone to try it either to confirm or deny. If it is the issue of this particular phone, I still have some time to change the device.
Thanks for your help!
Are you using a case or something with a magnetic lock system by any chance?

Forgot to mention. No, no case, nothing magnetic, no screen protector. The photo was taken while the phone was on my lap.

Okay well in that case I would say a faulty digitizer, I guess you should get it replaced ( under warranty )
I've seen many users having a similar issue which was triggered by a magnetic case thats why I asked about it ;-)

yeah, I've googled this issue, I know about magnets. But it looks like there is something underneath the screen that produces some magnetic interference. And it works with very big pressure... I was just wondering if everybody has this issue and just don't care\know, or it is just me. That's why I've asked somebody to test it.

So, as I understand - you did try S-pen with any application that support sensitivity recognition in this area and it works? The general notepad or any other application that is just for writing works in this area of the screen. The problem is only with push-level recognition.
How do I enable the pressure sensitivity?
Here is what I achieved on my S21 Ultra (snapdragon, USA t-mobile variant) using an older s-pen taken from an older note. But when I used different pressure, the Infinite Painter app acted like the pen was either on or off, but no gradients in between. Like I dragged the pen across the screen and pushed harder and softer, but the result was just no ink when too soft, and pure black when hard enough or harder. Nothing in between. Is this because my s-pen is too old, or did I need to turn on a setting in the phone or the app? I selected the 6B pencil in the app.

Thank you very much! yeah, I didn't realize this. I bought S-pen with the phone and I guess it's a different one from old Note S-Pen

I don't have infinite painter or any other painting app, but I tried my S pen on Samsung notes and there doesn't seem to be any irregular spots on the screen. Both tracing and pressure work on all parts of the screen as far as I can tell. I used my Tab S7's included S-Pen.

Thank you! Now I'm wondering if it is S-pen issue. Just noticed that if I hold the pen almost completely 90 degree to the screen, it just works fine on this spot.
