h3g January firmware update - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

Hi all
Can anyone confirm if three / h3g uk have pushed out the January security update to there branded note 8's.
Also can anyone with a three branded model confirm that Wi-Fi calling is available on there devices.
I am asking due to buying direct from Samsung, and after recently updating January's fix I will require the the latest firmware to match. samobile are only showing up to December 2017 so far.
Thanks Shaun

I know the only reason I'm still with them is because I have a original SIM contract they have to honour £15 a month unlimited everything
I would a be fool to give it up

WiFi Calling does work on the Three branded Note 8 and no security patch as far as I know
I love Three for obvious reasons such as the 4G Speeds I get. Can't complain at that because my Fibre Broadband is 2.2x slower than my phone.

Ugh I know i am such a harlot!
i called Three to get my PAC code to move to another network and before I even finished the sentence they were like have 100GB data and unlimited calls/texts for £10 per month! And they didn't extend my contract or tie me in! I mean how can you say no to that!1??? ...
anyway I digress ...
Right, I am desperate for new three firmware as I am using an unlocked Sammy N8 with the latest BTU firmware on boot-loader v3. I cant even flash three firmware unless they release something new and I am praying to whatever God (if any) exists that their next version will be on BLV3 otherwise no flashy for me and no wifi calling/volte in the short term...

my friend has a branded N8 from three, yes wifi calling does work as well as VOLTE/4G Supervoice (though for some strange reason three disabled the volte icon so you won't realise like on the razer phone).
I have a direct from sammy N8 and its on bootloader version 3, current three firmware still on bootloader 1 so it will not work on odin until they release an update to BLv3.

Yes, it will work as Three is using multi-CSC for all H3G related everywhere.
I am using Swiss vod firm here in UK as VOD UK hasn't released the Jan patch yet.
if you are BTU or OXM you need to flash everything using the CSC_ and not the HOME_CSC.
Note you device needs to be wiped also make sure you UK three sim is in situ.

as un update, installed this and wifi calling working perfectly, has a few issues with volte as three by default disable the VOLTE icon so you wouldn't know VOLTE was working unless you make a call and the 4g sign stays put and doest change to 3g.
it was a bit hit and miss but following this guide from someone experiencing the same problem on the s8, fixed my volte issues completely. Thought I'd share.
1. Download Shortcut Master from app store (Light version works, but it's a great app, support the dev if you can)
2. Open the app and go to the menu (three dot's top right) and select app explorer
3. Scroll down to IMS Settings and select it.
4. Scroll down to ImsSettingsLauncherActivity (last item on my list) select it and hit launch.
5. Select IMS Service Switch and under that turn on everything on that screen. (For me most things (especially RCS items) were disabled by default, but when I looked at a friends S8+ settings they were all on so I tried that and all works now.)
6. Make video calls!

I did same as above on both of mine and it is easy enough and you wont break anything, my provider doesn't support Wi-Fi callang though but all RCS items were there to enable

T-Mobile does sell the 64GB version. I purchased one through them.
If you want to pay for the whole phone all at once (or want a white Nexus 6), go through Google. If not, go through T-Mobile. It will be carrier locked until it's payed off.

Yep. Basically the only difference is the radio. The T-Mobile version uses 95R. The others use 98R. You can flash whichever radio, one may work better than the other for you.

This is slightly incorrect. The only build that has the 98 radio is LMY47E. This is the build that was pre-installed on models purchased directly from Verizon. All other builds have the 95 radio at the moment.

EU 7+ Dual Sim TA-1046 model stuck on Android 8 and Feb security update

Hi,
Got one from Amazon.de. Appears to be legit EU stock but there is no software update. Others talk about Android 8.1 and March/April security updates the one I have has neither. I also have jittery touch screen issues which is why I am hopeful a update is pending...
Anyone seen something like this before?
Thanks,
Neil

I have a TA-1046 DS bought in the Netherlands. Got my 8.1 april sec. update about 2 weeks ago.
Thanks for the reply. Little bit anoyed that this is stuck on 8. As mentioned I am finding quite a few touch related issues and am hopeful that a software update (of any kind) may help. Considering a return sadly.
In which country are you?
I have the same problem and I'm based in UK. As the Nokia 7 plus has been released only yesterday in UK I just assumed that they are not rolling out the ota here yet, focusing first on the countries where the phone was released earlier.
Unfortunately there is no way to force the ota, right?
I tried a VPN to France and Germany and no difference. So I’m assuming it’s eithrt not country linked or some other factor determines the OTA availability
I got mine in Spain the very same day it released (this Monday) and the update triggered as soon as I turned it on and connected it to wifi, even before going through the rest of the startup process. Same model number also but I didn't put my SIM card in until I was finished with the data transfer from my old phone. Maybe you can try to factory reset it without a SIM card inserted?
I got mine on Amazon.de. I am in Ireland. Still 8.0, Feb security.
I was a bit worried as this is one of the reason I bought the phone in the first place.
After reading these posts I now hope that it may be region dependent D
Thank you for starting this post.

SIM is not the problem. I setup mine without SIM also.
I was thinking to do a factory reset, but after reading few posts here, I might wait a while.
Maybe I'll contact Nokia support also
I contacted them today through the support app that's on the phone.
The chat is quite handy, but haven't got any better answer than "be patient"

OK, so I had a chat with NOKIA support.
Got my phone from Amazon.de and I am in Ireland. The guy there thinks I should have got the update at the start.
"Yes I do , from our end it all looks clear, device is for the correct region, IMEI checks out ..."
He advised to backup data, reset to FD and restart without SIM in (which I did anyway :silly:
"in my opinion no SIM would be the safest bet, but you could keep a card in if you'd like, just make sure to backup your data first"
So lets hope we do not have to send the phones back.
I will backup a few pictures, charge the phone and try the reset. I'll keep you updated.

I received mine on the 17th(release day in Portugal) and during setup I got the update msg and I did the setup with the SIM and SD Card already installed...
I tried reset to FD and setup again with and without SIM - still no update.
After another chat with Nokia support it seems that we are late to the party and we have to wait in the queue:
"What I could advise you is to try and check for update at a different time, because at the moment the network might be overloaded due to the large number of devices downloading updates." - this is according to the 2nd Nokia rep.
He might be right with so many EU countries getting the 7+ lately.
Hmm, that's the response id give if I wanted someone to stop bothering me! Not very inspiring. It also just doesn't seem very plausible to me...
Support is not real very helpful, with the only suggestion being "wait"
Does Nokia have a pc tool to recover or do software update?
I used to have one for my LG, so that the pc tool would push the update instead of waiting for an OTA

Tried the following:
Factory Reset with Sim in:

Spanish - Espana - No Update
Factory data reset Without Sim:

French - France - no update.

I also think that the update will not roll until the phone is released in the respective country.
If you can check in Italy, that would be great.
It would make things so easy if Nokia will let us download the firmware and install it in recovery - see recovery menu below:

I am thinking to try this also, but if you setup your VPN on the router and connected to WIFI and it did not work, then it would be pointless for me to try again.

AT&T HD Voice?

Made my first call with the missus, and I noticed that the call quality was awful. It's hard to get used to again after using my Pixel 2 XL and enjoying the call quality with HD voice that came with it.
I checked settings, and I can't seem to find anything that would turn on HD voice with AT&T. Also, I bought this device unlocked from Sammy.
Any pointers?
It's due to not running carrier firmware. You can't use WiFi calling (AKA HD voice) without it. Same with VoLTE Anand I believe video calls.

If you must have HD voice, return the unlocked Note and order the AT&T version. You will also get Wi-Fi calling if you buy the AT&T phone.
I've the same situation whit my previous note 8, been past many hours finding a way, and finally found it. You can change the CSC for your carrier, whit the *#243203855#. You must do the two install given when you click install. The phone will be factory restore and then, you'll have AT&T firmware and can use the VOLTE and VoWifi, if AT&T support it on the Note 9, and you have the Volte option provisionned in your account. For me, this has worked very well.
Hmm. I wonder why my Pixel 2 XL had HD Voice and I bought that unlocked.
Will this block tethering?

Do you know if this wil affect the use of tethering? We are currently under at&t's unlimited plan which doesn't include tethering and got the unlocked variant so we could use it for free.

For me, i can use thetering without any issues.
You could also flash the AT&T firmware with modded or patched ODIN to achieve the same result with the dialer code.
i currently have an unlocked usa version note 9 on ATT.
call quality sucks
even reception is not as strong as with a ATT branded phone (galaxy s8, iphone7, iphone 6plus).

Factor images differences C2 A3

There were 3 different factory images released.
What is the difference between the:

Unless you actually bought it FROM a carrier, then you are probably locked down anyway. But if you bought it from Google itself then just pick the one that aligns with whatever carrier it's on.

You've never been able to go into a carrier, besides Verizon and buy a pixel before. And its been noted that att and t mobile were going to release updates for phones to be optimized on their system. So that's why I'm surprised that google put them out

Unless you actually bought it FROM a carrier, then you are probably locked down anyway. But if you bought it from Google itself then just pick the one that aligns with whatever carrier it's on.

That doesn't make sense. OnePlus doesn't put out a release for every carrier that their phone works on. Same goes here. Those carrier specific releases today must be for carrier bought phones

I agree "That doesn't make sense."
US (ATT & Verizon): QD1A.190821.014.C2
US (TMobile, Sprint, Google Fi) & UK carriers: QD1A.190821.014
All other carriers (AU/JP/CA/TW/* US *): QD1A.190821.007.A3
So, could a person that purchased their phone from Google that uses one of these carriers ATT, Verizon, TMobile, Sprint, or Google Fi & UK use QD1A.190821.007.A3? The "International" version.
I guess, I mean without having the phone it's hard to say. What I figured is that Google fi uses T Mobile and Sprint networks so maybe that's why those 3 are lumped together in an update, for optimized usage. Idk
It just looks like they have modems optimized for different carriers. That's my take on it at least. That's usually been the case when multiple versions are available. As easy as it is to flash them, just try them all and see what works best for you. Lol
I guess I'm looking at this differently than you guys. These are not for phones bought from the carriers but all for phones bought from Google and maybe Best Buy. Then they are separated by where they are activated on.

Carrier bought phones can not be flashed with factory image can they? Are any able to unlock the bootloader?
I don't own the phone or I would.

Believe they can bootloader unlock when not carrier locked. (that's what the UI reportedly says about orm unlocking, and there's at least one report of being able to do it before inserting a sim)
Regardless of bootloader lock status the full OTA image can be sideloaded (same effect as flashing factory image, but doesn't require bl unlock or any sort of wipe)

I bought direct from Google for T-mobile and my device came with the *.007 version, not the *.014 like it shows for T-mobile. I'm thinking those are the direct carrier purchase and the All others is direct from Google. BUT, I could be wrong.
And what if you're using DSDS and one carrier is Verizon and the other eSim is Fi? I wonder if it then depends on which data is active at the time of the OTA. Can't they just roll this crap up into one image?

I agree. I am on T-Mobile bit bought direct from Google. Phone came with version .007 ... I thought I'd try flashing .014 since I'm on T-Mobile but it broke face unlock. Flashing .007.A3 (which is the Intl' and "other" US version) works great.

ATT Hell - RCS Messaging

Looking to see if somebody can help me with my issue which is I can no longer get RCS activated in messages, its not even an option to activate "chat feature not available for this device / you carrier does not currently support this feature." I came from op 6t where it worked just fine going all the way back where there was a manual option to activate it. When I to the pixel it worked than as I was unenrolling from beta messages it got screwed up. Talked to google whom said talk to att whom were completely clueless to what RCS is. There is a ticket out there with next level IT so we will see but am wondering if there something I should do or somebody that I should escolate to. BTW went back to 6th and no luck either.

I'm in the same boat... I've tried all of the troubleshooting tricks...no avail... I've had my phone for more than 8 days as well.

Found the answer. You need a new sim from AT&T. There is an issue with the 5g sim cards that came with the Pixel 5's so have AT&T send you a new one or get a newer one from the store. Not sure how to tell if the new sim card is the right one though.

Good to hear.
I just got a replacement Pixel 5 today as my original phone's proximity sensor was defective. This one was shipped by AT&T vs from a store. On this phone RCS works with the sim it came with.
You can trick it by putting someone else's sim card into your phone from a different carrier. Activate RCS with the alternate sim card in your phone. Then switch back to your sim card.
having the same issue on my Samsung Note 10+, it was okay two weeks ago but now it doesnt work anymore on both samsung messages and google messages
