S-Pen doesn't work after two weeks. (Ghost touches) - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

So after less than two weeks with my brand new device, the S-Pen stopped working (from one day to another). The phone recognizes it when I take it off, but soon after I hover it on the screen, starts interacting with it. It's like putting a piece of tape on the S-Pen tip and trying to write with it. Air Command doesn't work, neither the little circle that appears when you put the S-Pen close to the screen. I bought a $1000 device and now the most important/marketed feature stops working. What should I do? I've imported it so I don't have any warranty other than the one Seller gave to me (which now he's saying that the SPen is an accessory and it's not covered by their warranty).

Sorry to hear that. That's the risk one takes when buying import.

I see in your sig you've had other Notes, do you still have any of them? Try the Spen from one of your older Notes & see if it works. They are compatible, just be sure to take the Spen out of the Note 8 first, unless you have Spen Power Saver turned off, or the Spen won't work. That will tell you if you simply have a defective Spen or not. Although I've never had an Spen go bad, it is possible, hopefully it's just the Spen.

I had the same issue with my note 7, after 1 week the s pen started to behave erratic, I tried the s pen of my note 4, and it worked fine, as the note 7 was recalled and I did not want to surrender it, I bought another s pen, case solved, try with another s pen from another device, if you can not claim warranty, get another s pen, I have seen them for some 25-40 dollars

That's the first thing I've did. Even the first gen S-pen works fine. The phone works perfectly. I've also tested the 8's pen with the other devices and it also had issues. Luckly, the problem is the pen. Unfortunately, it's near impossible to get a new one in Argentina

Yup, the main problem is that I'm unable to find the original pen here in my country, only knockoffs. I need to import it from the States, which is a pain in the ass and I don't meet the requirements to do such a thing. I guess I need to ask to some friends if they would import it for me. The worst thing is that I need to bother a lot of people to get a fix for a thousand dollars phone. I just can't believe it..

You can buy it from Mexico too, is easier than import from USA. Here you can buy official spen. Try use Mercado libre

Well at least it's just the Spen & not the phone. Yeah that sucks how Argentina banned online international purchases. I used to forward stuff to someone I knew in Argentina but even he got hit with duty fees even though I declare as gift. For my buddies in the EU they rarely got hit with duties.
Is it possible to purchase one through Samsung in Argentina, like is there a Samsung store there?
If worse comes to worse I can offer to purchase one & forward to you but shipping costs might not be worth it even if you can get one there for more than what it should originally cost.

Did you try changing the tip?

Right now the seller says that he's awaiting response from his provider, I hope they'll give it to me without charge. There's a Samsung Store here, and they even promote the Note 8. But they don't even have a case for it so I doubt they would have an S-Pen, but I'll contact them if my seller doesn't have one. As you said, even as a "gift", you can't import anything without having Grade 3 tributary (or taxpaying?) identification code, named CUIT here. As I'm a student, I don't have one yet so It's impossible to me to get things outside of my country. Thankfully the situation is different than two years ago (even with that code, you wouldn't be able to import anything). I really appreciate your intention btw!

That's the second thing I did. I've tried all the 6 tips and none of them made a difference. Heck even without the tip is still malfunctioning. It's like something being stuck inside, but that's impossible since I didn't replaced the tip since the day I bought it.

why don't you try and go down to the Samsung store there and show them the problem, if you do that and are polite about it they might just organise a new pen for you

If your seller will not solve isseu, just buy new S Pen on Ebay:

Well thats way too old lol. The restriction was deleted in 2016-17 by the actual president. However, I'm unable to import it as I dont have a tributary code because I'm a student. I may have to contact Samsung here, but I'm pretty sure that the pen would cost me up to $150 if I get it from Samsung Argentina.

Fun fact is that my device now won't recognize if the S Pen is inside, resulting in a heavy battery drain and a constant alarm saying that I've lost the S-Pen. Same thing happened with the Note 5 when you broke the internal switch by inserting the Pen backwards. The thing is, now I don't know if the problem is the S Pen only, or the S Pen/Note combo. So now I really need a little help here:
I want to know how does the device recognizes the pen inside: is it a mechanical switch like older Notes, or an electronic sensor?. If it's mechanical/physical switch, then I'm done. It's broke, forever. If it's a sensor, it may stopped detecting the Pen because the pencil itself is broken, so If I replace the Pen only, it should be good.
I've seen JerryRigEverything's video about how Samsung made the Note 7 waterproof. Since the N8 S-Pen is the same as the N7 one, I came to the conclusion that the S-Pen holder is the same too. As you can see in this video at 3:19 mark, there isn't any plastic switch, but there's a cable coming from the upper part that snaps on the motherboard. I'm assuming that's the sensor. If I'm right, then my device is fine as I wouldn't be able to break that sensor. I don't know. I'll have to try a new S Pen and see what happens..

[Q] NFC on the GS4A: the battery cover has nothing to do with it, right?

So, again I've got this dinged up GS4A I got for a great price (it was missing the original battery cover, original battery, and it has a spider-web crack in the screen but the digitizer is 100% functional) and I just realized it's supposed to be able to do some NFC stuff as well, and that the batteries for the GS4A (and the GS4 also) are supposed to have the NFC antenna built into the battery pack itself... but mine apparently isn't working at this point. It could be the one thing that's not functional with this dinged up device (because the previous owner dropped it), and I figured it's one of three potentials:
1) the NFC capability is dead because of some damage to the circuit or a broken lead someplace internally, or...
2) the missing battery cover (which I am trying to locate a replacement for but for whatever reason there are NO suppliers anywhere on the planet that have the Dive Blue battery cover which is a bit ridiculous) may provide some functionally in terms of an antenna (since there are two sets of contact points plainly visible on the back of the GS4A), or...
3) the battery I have - which I had to purchase from someone on craigslist because I was unable to find one anywhere here in Las Vegas, not even at Fry's Electronics which pissed me off - is a counterfeit one and it's missing the NFC antenna inside the battery packaging
At this point I don't know which one it is, could be just one, or two, or a combination of all three issues at the same time, I wish I knew for sure.
But can anyone else chime in and tell me that they have NFC functionality (reads tags, basically, and whatever else like programming them if you happen to have or use the rewritable ones like the Samsung TecTiles) with the battery cover removed and a real Samsung or third party replacement battery?
I keep thinking I'm just doing something wrong, but I've reset the GS4A several times in the past week for testing purposes, complete factory wipe (hold Volume Up/Home/Power to get the recovery menu, wipe data/cache/factory reset) and when I enable the NFC circuit I get nothing at all from any tagged items I have - a few library books from here in Las Vegas which use RFID tags which I've been able to read with other phones like the Nexus S in the past, and so on.
Sure would like to figure out why it's not working, but I'll just keep trying for now.
Thanks for any info anyone can provide...
I can confirm that NFC works without back cover and my third-party battery (Hyperion "Replacement For Galaxy S4/I9500") on SGH-I537 using tag from tagsfordroid.com.

Thanks for that, I'm confident this is perhaps a counterfeit Samsung battery but I haven't been able to get a real one anywhere here in Las Vegas for testing that aspect. I found another seller that claims to be using "the real thing" and I put one in and then enabled NFC and swiped it across a DVD from our library system directly on top of the embedded RFID tag and... nothing.
So I'm going to hold out hope that yes, it works when I have a real battery and not some cheap Chinese knockoff which I'm pretty sure is exactly what this one is. Hell, with a full charge on it it'll go from 100 to 90% in like 30 minutes of use, guess I learned my lesson the hard way from this experience and won't do that again.

Thanks for the info, I may have to consider those, seems like a great price and having the charger would obviously make it easier to keep 'em both charged as needed. Heard some good and bad things about Hyperion so I'm on the fence again, same thing with Anker batteries as well - some folks love 'em to death, other people hate 'em with a severe passion.

Should note also that not all RFID tags can be read by all NFC phones. Depends on the type of tag and the type of reader. You should try it with an actual NFC tag to be sure!
Well, I realize that but I've been able to read the library tags (and others) with other Samsung Galaxy products (the Nexus S, the Galaxy Nexus, etc) so I can't imagine for some reason that Samsung just decided to break that functionality in my particular case, who knows. I'm sure it's the battery I purchased, will just have to wait and see. I'll be ordering either the Hyperion or Anker two-pack w/charger next week and will find out soon enough.
Sure hope they work...

[Q] Switch sim card from scratched note 4

So i just got my note 4 yesterday and I love it been an android user since the og droid. Anyways here's the deal. I didn't have money to get a screen protector since I didn't get paid till today. Thought I would baby the phone till I could order one from Amazon but today i scratched it by accidentally putting it in my pocket with my old phone still in there( baggy sweats so I didn't notice).
Well I preordered a note 4 but went in to another store and they had one in Stock. Just checked my email and they just shipped my preorder. Could I open the package and switch sim cards without it triggering a change in phones? It's not a terrible scratch but it's an inch long and it's driving me crazy. Thanks in advance for any help. Just switched from Verizon so I don't know how tmobile works.

All the phones have embedded IMEI code numbers in the phone itself as well
as on the bar code label and that's the very first thing Verizon or or any other
carrier checks when you turn in a phone or return a phone for any reason.
If the IMEI number is different than what they expect it to be you will get
yourself in a lot of trouble, they will either not refund your money or bill
you for the full price of the phone if it hasn't been fully paid off already.
There is no way to change or alter the IMEI number.
Good luck!
hmm please clarify if I'm wrong but you want to swap your scratched phone and put the scratched phone in the new Note 4's box and return it. Am I correct?

As bad as it sounds yes I'm trying to do that. I sort of feel justified to do that because when opening the account they ported my number to my wife's phone and i had no cell service.
I heard if i put a screen protector on it itmight hide the scratch a little bit but it's killing me that my 2 day old phone has a big scratch on it.
Ouch, you're just begging for an onslaught of hostile replies, aren't you?
Here's the thing, you can't switch boxes, you can't switch phones in boxes, you can't switch IMEI's, and you're probably not going to be able to return a phone with a scratched screen, but ethics aside, there's always a very slim chance if the rep is distracted. You could always try faking Tourette Syndrome if you're really that desperate, but it seems like a lot of work for the slim chance of a relatively small payoff.
The screen protector they will almost for sure take off before scanning the phone in, but that idea did make me lol (thanks for that). You might have to live with it or hope that it isn't too noticeable with the protector on and use it that way. Don't mess with switching phones though if you want to avoid embarrassment in the store.

Glad i was able to make you laugh lol. I was wondering about the screen protector for myself not to notice, not tmobile since it looks like i have to live with the scratch. I think i notice it more because I'm looking at every pixel of that beautiful screen. Too bad i didn't sign up for jump so i can trade it in for the note 5.
Ok here's my last resort before I'm stuck with it lol. Wonder if i can return it before the 14 day grace period is up and just get the nexus 6 when it comes out. Has anyone done this successfully before? I know I'll have to pay a $50 restocking fee.

The issue isn't returning and waiting for the Nexus, you can always do that, the issue is trying to return a phone with a scratch on the screen. The re-stock fee is just for opening the package, it doesn't cover damage. So really, the best answer you're going to get is either try to sell it on eBay - if there's no financing on the phone you could likely get close to what you paid, especially if you're willing to sell internationally, or, just take it back into the T-Mobile store and hope they don't notice. If you're really that determined and they refuse it, try taking it to other stores. It's not really ethical advice, but that's really your only option. Personally I would be way too mortified at the idea that i'm going to walk in, look the rep in the eye and expect him/her to take the phone with the scratch, it would look pretty shady. I would just sell it on eBay. But obviously it's up to you.
you scratched it, you own it...coming here asking for ways to pull a fast one isn't welcome, nor wanted...
Well, as entertaining as it would be to watch the onslaught here, this thread is going to be closed before it gets out of hand.
That being said, what you are wanting to do is not only immoral, but also illegal and unethical. No matter what screw ups you had to endure when they swapped your devices there is no justification for what you are attempting. This is equivalent to buying a new car, wrecking it, and returning it to the lot claiming this is how you received it.
You damaged the device, intentionally or not, and you must deal with the consequences of that action. Your carrier can hold you liable for the cost of both devices, in full, if you actually attempted to pursue this, not to mention having legal grounds to get you for fraud.

Wireless Charger Pack for Note 5 (it's NOT what you think it is)

Please look at the photo I have posted (zoom in to see the details) with this post to the thread. I am referring to the "Wireless Charging Pack" which is actually a cover for the Note 5 from Samsung, which has a battery built into it, which wirelessly charges the phone while the cover is on. The cover only covers the back, not the front (including the camera lens on the back as it contains a battery) but wirelessly charges the phone while it is on the phone (I have read in the description it has a switch on it which allows you to turn the wireless charging on and off, so essentially this is Samsung's version of a Mophie cover). You can use the phone normally (except for the camera of course) while the phone has this on it. The attached photo I got from this link (you have to scroll down a ways to find it): http://www.samsung.com/global/galaxy/galaxy-note5/charging/. Thoughts? It is currently not for sale on the Samsung accessory web site. Does anyone have one and what do they think of it? Does anyone know where to get one?
Looks pretty interesting.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3195459
We got a discussion about it going on there but none of the answers you want. the device is still a bit of a mystery as a lot of online retailers are not showing stock.
I am still looking for one as well...

I did live chat with the Samsung Support reps and they said to call the Samsung Support line and I would be able to order one (that they were available). Here is the number: "1-855-SAM-USA1 (1-855-726-8721) 9am – 9pm ET, 7 days a week". Has anyone gotten one that can report on what they think of it?
Price?
I am not ready to order one so I didn't call. Give them a buzz and let us know

I was all about this until it set in that it covers the camera. What a waste. Had it not been for that the form factor on this looks stellar. Oh well...

Yes but you need to think of what is being asked here. With our current technology, batteries must be rectangular to work, and cannot have holes in them. So to have a hole for the camera would be to have to make the battery shorter (and maybe thicker to make up for that) and currently this case already adds alot of thickness as far as I have heard. So there's not much of an alternative! I believe the designers also probably thought it might not be such a big concern as well - because how much more often do you use the phone for other things - other than for the camera - most of the time, right?

They could have used 3 batteries to get around the camera. Would have increased the price a lot i am sure though.
Yes I was thinking that as well.

I live in the US. Not available for shipment here...
http://promo.samsungpromotions.com/giftsoftheseason/
Charging case is included in both pack promotions.
Did you end up getting the wireless charger pack? When you posted the reply about the gift promotion offers I looked and didn't see one... But I looked now again and the offers are no longer there. Last time I talked to Samsung on the phone they said it would be available in January... Samsung is still not offering it on their website, I noticed however, and calling that same Samsung order line I am told it is a 30 minute wait just to talk to someone - so I gave up on that. Anyone have anything on these?
They could have totally have the cut out for the camera. There's an impression for it. They could have just continued and sliced that bad boy open. I got $100 that the next version of it will feature a hole for the camera and flash. Looks good though.
BTW, what the heck color option of a Note 5 is that? That thing looks sexy as hell!!!

Gear VR Innovator Edition (Note 4) $150 in stock @ Amazon

Many of you guys know that the newer Gear VR Consumer Edition apparently doesn't fit the Note 4. So I was searching for the older Innovator Edition for my Note 4, but all of the prices were jacked up to ridiculous amounts on Amazon and Ebay and it was sold out at Best Buy. And then I happened across a seller with certified refurbished Innovator Editions for both the Note 4 and S6 on Amazon for $150 with Prime shipping.
http://amzn.com/B018UHFZXQ
It looks like the 'certified refurbished' is a program from Amazon and it does come with a 90 day warranty.
I also made a Slickdeals post http://goo.gl/XuoyEm because I think there will be plenty of people who will be using their Note 4 for a while and want to experience VR.
Impossible to get one in or to Canada. Scammers on eBay and Amazon.ca selling for upwards of $500.
Just ordered one, to be delivered Thursday. Will let you know how it looks. Hopefully works with Sac23's Note 5 Ported ROM, otherwise it'll be time to do some flashin'!

Yeah, that's why I was so happy to find a certified refub one from a reputable seller. Unfortunately, it didn't come with the microSD card, but the seller has been good about sending one out to me. As soon as I get it, I'll report back.

Well, got the Gear VR (1 day early, thanks Amazon!) in a plain white box, and looks almost new to me. The only thing that I might question is whether or not it was used, as the foam surround looks like it may have been worn before.
Overall, no scratches, came with the headgear, back strap, top strap, faceplate cover, extra foam surround, and instruction manual, all in the big black carry case. It did not include the microsd card that is found in the retail version. The headgear did have the protective plastic covering on it as if it were new, but the one that should be on the back strap didn't, and neither did the top piece nor the faceplate cover.
Overall, it's a pretty solid buy, especially since you can download the oculus software from Sandman here. Now, I can't vouch for how well it works yet, since: A. I just unboxed it, and B: I'm running Sac23 Note 5 Ported V2 .1 10/2 http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-sprint/development/rom-sac23-note-5-ported-v1-9-23-t3208932Rom right now, which doesn't seem to support Gear VR. I'm currently installing [ROM] [N910PVPS4COK1] [100% Stock, Root, Odexed&Deodexed, No KNOX/Itson] [12/15/2015]http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-sprint/development/rom-t3271966 to get that functionality back, and will update once I have done so.
It's not the deal that the new users get with the $99 Gear VR, but compared to the $299 this guy was, I'm pretty happy.

So far, everything checks out. It isn't quite as smooth as when I tried it on my phone while running kitkat...though that may be because I was impatient and did a dirty flash lol (I know, tsk tsk, shame on me, my phone will blow up, yadda yadda yadda. I was impatient! I'll do a clean install in the next few days to update the performance of Gear VR with a properly done flash).
Video player, Netflix, and photos all work well, though slightly laggy (again, dirty flash), and I noticed that the focus wheel isn't quite as smooth as it should be, though I finally got it dialed in.
For those of you that never tried the Gear VR, it does have a fair amount of pixelation, however after watching a movie for a bit you really don't notice it as much. The touchpad, back button, and volume controls all work as they should.
The phone does overheat while using this. I've had a fan directed at my phone while watching movies, and that seemed to help. There are tutorials and write ups on mods you can do, from heatsinks applied directly to the battery, to attaching mini pc-fans to the back of the phone powered by small usb battery packs hooked on the strap by the temple, to plug in fans. I even read about a guy that stuck one of those cold gel eyepatches that women wear between the phone and the faceplate cover to cool down the phone. Whatever you do, know that heat is an issue while using this for playing videos. I haven't tried any of the games yet, but I imagine that it'd get worse with that.
The lenses on the Gear VR are adequate. Things are relatively sharp in the center, but you do get chroma aberrations on the corners of your field of view (purple fringing on areas of contrast, i.e. the edge of the screen will be slightly out of focus from the corner of your eye, and you'll see a purple hue along it). Not a huge issue, as you're most likely concentrating on the center of your viewing area, and shifting your head towards anything you want to look at, but it's there. I've also noticed that you have to have the headset on just right to have everything in focus top to bottom, left to right. If it is slightly off, then you'll notice that certain areas are not in focus.
Despite all this, it's a great piece of tech. It does transport you from wherever you are to another place, be it a theater, virtual VR tour, Iron Man's lab, etc. It is good enough to allow you to suspend disbelief, and engage in an immersive experience. Occasionally, it will bring you back to reality, sometimes in a jarring fashion, but overall, it does the job pretty well. I've even found myself reaching out my hands to try and touch something, only to remember that it's virtual, and usually laugh at myself afterwards.
All I know is I hope that Samsung continues with it's Gear VR line, and that when my upgrade is due in November, I'll get a new piece of tech that'll surpass what this one can do, primarily the pixelation, overheating, and the quality of the lenses.
My buddy got the Note 5, and just received his Gear VR for his phone. I'll try to snag it soon to give it a try, and I'll let y'all know the differences.
Let me know if you have any questions, and I'll try to answer them the best I can.

Thanks for the update. I got the microsd card today and popped it in my phone, but the touchpad still isn't working. What firmware are you on? I upgraded to the latest 5.1.1 (DOK2), but it's stock. I don't know if that could be the issue or if the Gear VR itself is just defective.

I'm on latest as well. If the touchpad isn't working, that's probably a hardware issue with the Gear VR itself. Do you know anybody else with a Note 4 that they can try on your Gear VR? Also, make sure that the micro-usb connection is seated correctly. Sometimes on mine it doesn't push in all the way, and i just lightly press the phone in to make sure it's a firm connection.

Yeah, I've been fiddling with it to make sure everything is seated properly. I'm pretty sure it's a hardware issue now. I contacted Samsung, but their customer service is so bad right now. I was almost finished with the RMA process, but their system was down and they couldn't find my serial number. Then while I was waiting for the system to work again, the call got disconnected on their end. They said they would call me back if that happened and took my number, but after 15 minutes of waiting, I called back and had to do the same process again with a different rep. And the system was still down, so she said she would call me back within 24 hours. That was Friday. No call yet.
I have contacted Samsung customer service before, but I don't remember it being that bad.
Anyway, I will call back tomorrow and try to get the RMA finished. If not, I'll have to send it back for a refund. It's sad because I was really excited about the Gear VR.
Bought one thru Amazon last week
After numerous tries to talk with someone in marketing at Samsung and being unwilling to even pay the $199, found the $150 refurbished on Amazon. The one I got appears to be new, all protective stickers in place and not a mark on it. The only thing "missing" was the SD card but not needed as the software install required at first use put everything that is on the card on my phone. So far so good.
Now looking to find the best solution to use Cardboard in addition to Oculus. Anyone?

Unfortunately, I have had such a continued bad experience with Samsung customer service that I have decided to return the Gear VR. I was super excited about it, but at this point it's not worth the aggravation. Three calls, an email, and 6 days and still I can't get them to set up a simple RMA and send me a shipping label despite them telling me everytime that they'll get it done.
Darn Samsung.

$99 consumer is back in stock now... just a simple mod to each corner and should work fine on N4. So back this goes to be refurbished again!

S Pen Snaps/Broken End

So before you ask me this is not my S Pen I saw this on Twitter.
Do you think the Pen just broke like this or was damaged by the user? Has anyone had any issues with their S Pen (such as breaking or the end coming off)?
Uh oh, I sure hope this isn't a common thing. I just started messing around with all the new things the S pen can do. This makes me nerveous to even pull it out.
never had a issue with a s-pen more than likely user error
Learn how to use it properly.

How? For that to have happened the S Pen would have had to been sticking out and then obviously of it gets hit it could snap off
Just Happened to me too
Just happened to me too,I can see this happening pretty easily. The end has a very thin plastic housing for a part that gets a moderate amount of tension. Broke off for me with almost no effort. I called Samsung and they denied a replacement since it is physical damage. $50 for a new one.

Pull yourself together for goodness sake! S-pens have been around for years and are well made though like all such tech will break if abused.

Might be a very random thing. I have used the spen alot, mainly testing screen protectors and fooling around with the new features. My spen is still solid. I have dropped a few times as well.

S-Pen is very solid. Our last display for the Note 8, someone snapped the S-pen clicker off that one too. So it's probably just spiteful thing. Customers being customers.
Same thing happened to mine yesterday while I was trying to pull it out of the phone. The rest of the pen got stuck inside the phone. I tried putting the top back on and now it won't pop out at all. Any suggestions on how to get it out? Thinking of leaving in there until I can order another one. Smh.

Update, Samsung offered a free replacement. They sent me a shipping label to return the broken one.
.....Nope
I had several Note devices and not once have I replaced a S pen, I haven't switched out the tip. Not sure how you could damage it anyway besides the obvious. It feels light enough why incredible Hulk it ??
Mine broke after 3 days...
It was a little wobbly out of the box. Didn't think much of it. I've had all Notes since the 2, never had one break on me and used them each for over a year. On day 3 of the Note 9, I was just using my ginger nail to pull it out and it just fell off. Wasn't using much pressure. I take care of my electronics. I went to you YouTube and saw that it had happened to others. One guy stated that he contacted Verizon and they sent him a new one. I called AT&T. It wasn't as easy as his, but after a few trys and calling Samsung directly, AT&T gave me a 50 dollar credit. The actual cost was 54 with taxes, but it was close enough. I'm just worried that this is going to be an ongoing thing. Samsung was great and offered to fix it immediately (they sent a box with return postage) but said the carrier should have fixed it with no issues. So. I called AT&T again and this time they took care of it. They wanted to replace the whole phone, but I didn't want to go through setting it up again and asked for a credit. They agreed and I had a new one in about 4 days or so.
Just happened to me now, device is only 24 hours in hand purchased from Samsung. Anyone else get a free replacement from samsung?
