Warning, Camera failed popup? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions & Answers

We recently received a "certified like new" S8 that was brand new as far as I could tell. However upon first boot and testing it out, the camera came up with "Warning, camera failed". After doing research, I cleared the cache and did a factory reset. At first boot, the camera failed again. Upon second boot the camera worked normally. Today, I checked the phone again and the same failure sporadically appeared. Using a third party camera app yielded "camera in use by other application". When on the charger, the camera fails almost all the time; When off the charger, it works about 9 times out of 10 but randomly fails.
Either a built in app is using the camera, preventing it from loading or there is an issue related to heat (won't work while charging). The front camera works every time. I'm dreading the thought of another certified like new phone as this was already an alternate upgrade to the defective model before it. Any thoughts?

Just a follow up, the phone had to be replaced. The main camera eventually quit altogether. We tried the 10 solutions found online and none worked. Due to the high number of occurrences, perhaps it was a bad batch of cameras or software incompatibilities.

Rear camera doesn't work. 5.1 no root.

My rear camera was working last night and this afternoon it(Motorola Stock Camera) suddenly started telling me to restart the camera while Google Camera says that it can't connect to the camera. It's weird because I haven't dropped or treated the phone roughly lately and there haven't been any updates that would effect it.
Since the problem started I've done multiple restarts and completely wiped the device. The problem continues to persist. By experimenting with other camera apps I was able to figure out that the front facing camera still works fine. I'm worried that it is a hardware issue.
Mine just went out today. Mine happens to be an Asurion refurb. Anyone have any insight to this problem?

Warning: Camera Failed

So this randomly started happening the other day, whenever I try and open my camera through any method, double tap power, use the app, from the lockscreen etc... it loads than says "Warning: Camera Failed" and there' an OK button that exit's the app. I've tried everything I've found online, factory reset twice, wiped cache partition, and safe mode. It also doesn't work with other camera apps. Another thing I've noticed is that the flashlight is highlighted with a light blue in quick settings but you can't turn it off or on, same with NFC. I didn't drop it or anything, I also bought it used and when I got on Samsung support the person said that they couldn't find the IMEI in their system so it's probably not available for service. Any suggestions? The only idea that I have left is that one of the third party camera apps that I downloaded said something about the camera being in use by another application, any possibility this is actually correct and I can find out what's using it? Other than that I really have no ideas
Did you dropped your phone? There's a possibility that the camera cable got disconnected form the mainboard
try the camera without your sd card. I had same issue on s7, caused by faulty sd card

I didn't drop it but I'm thinking this might be the case somehow as much as I don't want to admit it. Samsung support (however useless they were) were pretty adamant that it was a software issue.
This is becoming a widespread issue:

This may have been caused by the CRHA update that added AR Emoji and Super Slow-mo:

1.*#34971539# Do you get a menu? and is the phone to cam FW Write greyed out?
2.*#0*# Mega cam test works fine?
This issue is so strange, I have note 8 with same problem when phone is on full Stock Rom even *#0*# cam test fails reads 0 cam. However when I installed Combination Rom (Factory Binary) The camera/flash works fine in the *#0*# and even in more extensive testing menus(Its stock in combination ROM or you can use Info phone Sam app), But I don't know how to flash FW for cameras , since the options are greyed out , I believe I have to place camera FW files (get them from system image?) in a certain folder in root directory(using root explorer) then initiating *#34971539# to enable Phone ---> Cam write, anyone who had this done successfully or experimenting too, your input is appreciated.
Note: When I flash stock rom back, the same problem occurs.

P20 Pro: Random ghost movements after every restart?

After just having received the Android Pie 9.0 update yesterday, I still have the same issues as since I bought this phone:
Being that after a restart the phone is unusable, as it starts doing whatever it wants, as if there were shadow presses and swipes on the display.
These totally random, involuntary movements, as if I were touching the screen, even though I don't. Those occur so fast that I can only stop it (for a limited time) by pressing the power button (turning off the display and all actions), are totally not something I have ever experienced on another phone before, not even with OnePlus.
I took my case off just in case this would cause pressure on the phone, but it still happens without the case. I propped the phone up so that I definitely don't touch or cover any sensors, but it still happens.
It seems some internal sensor is broken, as this issue still persists after updating to Android 9.0. Unless this might be related to the Nova launcher?
Unfortunately I don't see a way of recording this issue without compromising my personal information, so I can only describe it.
I hope I can resolve this through a device swap through my carrier, but I doubt it. Has anyone else experienced this issue?

Is there a third-party one-button lock screen app installed on your phone? There may be conflicts.

No, there is no necessity for this.
In the fact issue occurs also in Safe Mode as well as after cleaning the system cache (wiped through the menu which is available for soft reset / wiping all data).
The issue got only more and more severe this week and sometimes temporarily froze the screen / inputs and did lead to error messages on the camera app, making it impossible to take photos temporarily.
Huawei referred me to a local repair shop and I will hand in the phone for repair by early next week, once I have organised a replacement phone.

Cameras not working

Some cameras (including the front-facing camera) just stopped working some time ago. I actually think this is a software issue because: first, it happened suddenly and second, it is not a single camera that stopped working... Searching in settings I found something that tests the hardware... my camera results are like this:
drive.google.com/file/d/14c5fzOAtoUn2C-Gi-E9phzdetG8K93fh/view
The ones that don't have the "Pass", broke the app...
I tried to reset the phone, but it only removed my apps... I even waited for the update to the new android but it didn't fix the problem.
What can I do? Is there any option to like "reset" the kernel?

main camera blurr

Hi,
After the first 2020 ota update the camera started to get blurred and now is completely useless.
So i looked at the changelog and the update "fixed" something related to QRcode reading. So they must have messed something up.
Anyone knows anything about it?
Model: ZE620KL 128gb rom, updated to latest firmware, rooted with magisk and with twrp.
Thanks.
Additionally, wide camera works fine so far. But still it is strange that sometimes the main camera works and right after few minutes it gets all blurr again.
Hello, I have the same problem. It looks like the update killed a part of the camera. Your OIS is broken now. You can either replace your camera (around $10) or, as I did it, you can try to tap on the camera module. It may fix it temporary. A little bump could also work.
I am having a similar issue. Autofocus works fine for images close to the camera. Seems to be related to the QR code update mentioned by @Gyplay.
My phone has been serviced 3 times during warranty (free). It just died 20 days after receiving it. Then, around its 4th month of life it stopped holding charge. Around it's 10th month it just died again. No falls, not a single scratch and no liquid spills...
Now I have been living with this issue with the camera for almost a year...
Never had issues with any of my previous phones...
Perhaps I was unlucky, but will never buy an asus phone again.
