Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 4x MIUI 9 - MTP issue with root - Xiaomi Redmi 4X Questions & Answers

So I had this issue where my device would appear using MTP in TWRP but would not appear in windows/Linux using mtp.
I tried the usual android troubleshooting on my redmi note, enable usb debug, set mode to usb mtp etc but no matter what I did the device would only charge and the dialog box never came up on the phone to change the mode.
I thought the USB port was broken so I ordered another one...it was then that I realised that it worked through TWRP. So I figure that rooting it must have broken it somehow.
After looking in to USB configuration I finally tried from within terminal which seems to work:
echo mtp,adb>/data/property/persist.sys.usb.config
after a phone reboot all seems well again.
As an aside, /data/property/persist.sys.usb.config was set to 1 before I changed it. I can't quite figure out what mis-configured it, but it properly broke the functionality.

[SOLVED] Charging but not recognized by the PC

Hi,
I connected my note 5 to my laptop today, and surprise surprise, it is no longer recognized by the PC (though it charges). It used to be fine, I don't know what changed!
I tried different cables, different USB ports and different laptops
I tried to plug it in normal mode, safe mode, recovery mode and download mode
I tried switching USB debugging on/off
I tried the *#0808# menu, and I tried MTP+ADB and CP options
I uninstalled drivers from the PC and installed the latest from the samsung website
I tried both kies and smart switch
nothing worked! I am not doing a factory reset because I have seen many people do it for other devices and none of them solved it this way! I'm waiting for the Marshmallow update, maybe it will fix this annoying issue. Meanwhile do you have any other ideas guys?

hi,
you don't say what Laptop o/s you using on laptop.?
Windows 10, Windows 8.1 Windows 8 or Windows 7...... or Apple o/s.?
Briefly my take is on this is, most probably the laptop and not phone.?
(Yes, i might be wrong of course.)
My reason is, i have Windows 10 laptop
and sometimes / a few time, ) my
laptop does not recognize my Note5
Yes, , it charges phone (just like yours) but does not recognize phone.!
I then have to re install drivers for phone I use Smart Switch to re install drivers.
Then it works ok for a while etc..
Why don't you test phone on someone else's pc or laptop to make sure.?
Overall my Note5 is mostly recognized by laptop
Good luck

Thank you for the reply.
As I have already mentioned, I did try another laptop. Mine is windows 8.1 x64 and my brother's windows 10 x64. I tried re installing the drivers from smart switch but to no avail.
Any other ideas?

hi ,
why i still think its laptop /pc drivers related.
(But yes ,i might be completely wrong ..?)
i have laptop win 10 x64 also.
The issue is of laptop, not always recognizing a device /similar as yours ,but charging device .
Other devices, when trying to connect to laptop (,not just my Note5 ),( from time to time) eg Note 2,..3 ..4 , USB flashstick ..my Polar M400 running watch etc .Device is not recognized but charging .
So for me,
its just not Note 5 but other devices also (.from time to time) .
My "take " on this issue is that it points between drivers (pc ,laptop) //// relevant devices eg Note 5 ..etc . and not just the firmware issue of Note 5 ,??
but yes, as stated i might be wrong .
good luck
Post note ,
i have to add reinstalling drivers "sometimes " help " ,
but it happens again, later. ( not recognizing device )
So i am pointing fingers, at Windows o/s + the "company/maker " of laptop ..pc and + devices .The compatibility between all three above ,combined and yes i had similar issues ( from time to time with Win 8 ../Win 8.1 etc ).
Yet, i have also found that certain of my devices
that work nearly 100% of time on my laptop !,
which indicates to me, the compatibility of devices between device /laptop ,is very good ..??
I have a note 2 and it works every time when I plug it to either pc. My laptop is lenovo with all the latest drivers. Hopefully, marshmallow will address this issue because otherwise, this means that I can't root my device.

Wait, have you tried this yet?
Pull down notification menu while phone is plugged in and there should be a option for changing from charge mode to mtp and such. Just pull down notification and tap on the biodiversity that's lasted.

hi ,
strange ,
just for the record i also have a Lenovo Flex 2 laptop ( x64 ) Win 10 .!!!
i have rooted all my devices on Lenovo laptop ( Note 2, Note 3 , Note 4 and my Note 8.0 tablet etc )
Yet , i am at moment not interested in rooting my Note5 ( i have it already a couple of months )
I am happy keeping myself busy with Theme store ,tweaks/beta apps and lately with the interesting Lockmaster app( Play store ) for lockscreen ... etc .
If i get the root "urge " i pick up my other rooted devices and use them .or /update or/ install root only tweaks/apps etc. for my rooted devices .!!
i hope Marshmallow fixes your issues .!!
good luck

Did you try clicking where it says Cable Charhing?
Edit: Never mind that. I see what you mean. That's odd it's not there for you. It definitely sounds like a PC issue. You can try completely removing all Samsung drivers and start over. Just using the Uninstaller will not cut it though. You'll have to do a system level cleaning of all samsung drivers.

The issue is not with your device. It's because of Windows. Is there another computer that you can use to connect your device to that you have never connected to before? Also make sure that you are using either the cable that came with your device, or at least a good quality cable. I've had that issue occur in the past because I was using a cheap cable.

I did plug it in my brother's laptop but no dice. I tried the OEM cable and an Asus cable on USB 2 and 3 ports, it did not work on either pc. How can I completely uninstall samsung drivers?
For users having the same issue, I found a solution (which also fixes all charging issues by the way).
If you look at the charging port, you will see a "tongue" where the pins connect. We all know that fast charging requires 5 pins not 4. The OEM cable comes with 5 as you all know. However, I found the OEM cable to be very fragile and not reliable, one pin tends to get bent without much pressure. This leads to the "tongue" going down somehow. The fix is to get the "tongue" up a bit, use a toothpick or something that does not conduct power. As for the cable, I suggest you use an Asus cable (I have 3 of those, 2 from my nexus 7s and 1 from my Zenwatch). Asus cables come with 5 pins and they are sturdier than Samsung's and they are a bit longer as well. Now the phone charges properly, fast charging and all and the computer recognizes it once again.
Hope this helps you too

I'm having this same problem these same problems. Other then I'm not able to get it to recognize even after doing everything that was said to do in this thread.
I feel like I'm missing a file? I was messing with them and just may think that could be my problem. is there anything else that has not been said in this thread I could do to fix this problem? When connected to my computer it recognize it as a charger. I can't access my files from my computer to my phone.
any help would be very helpful! Thanks!
I'm having the exact same problem but now I tried to use Flashify to go back to original recovery instead of TWRP & now by recovery or boot IMG is screwed so it wont even boot to recovery..
It boots only to download mode & is not recognized by any PC we have, with every cable I've tried.. uhhgggggg
I was having the same issue. Here is what solved it for me:
• Disconnect the usb cable.
• Go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Troubleshooting\Hardware and Sound
o Go down to device / hardware and devices – click on that
o Follow instructions to correct issues. This found I needed a bus device driver update.
o Let it update and once done go out.
• On PC - Go to Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings - go down until you get to the part that says "All Networks" ...expand the list by clicking on the arrow to the right. In this area you will see "Media Streaming" There should be an area highlighted in blue that says "Choose media streaming options" click on that. Make sure you "allow all" . Once that is done, click "ok" at the bottom. Plug your device into the usb and it should be recognized. Seems a recent Windows update has that filter off.
• Now, restart your computer.
• Use original usb cord that came with phone! Plug in phone then plug in usb to computer.
• It should recognize your device now.
I now have to restart computer every time I want to connect my device but it works.
Hi I am having that same problem with my note 4. It doesn't seem to be a pc problem as no pc at all none Nada recognizes the phone. Windows 7 to Windows 10. None. Used 2 workmates of mine who also have note 4s on my laptop and all the laptops i used i used their phine on itand they worked so blaming the pc seems to be out of the equation..your solution and all those settings have been untouched as it has all devices allowed ..... tried cleaning the connectors and also different oem cables to no avail ..The only thing I have not done is change the logic board
Hi I hope somebody can help me. I am having exactly the same issue. though I don't think its PC or Laptop problem. I have two Note 5 the other one is working just fine, while the other Note 5 that was just charging was connected I noticed that running *#0808# I can select AP and CP but MTP+ADP was not selected and if I try selecting the radio button I will be able to but after pressing Ok or Reboot it back to no selection at all. Which I observe on my other Note 5 that was working its always selected every time I run *#0808#.
One more thing noticed is that on the Note 5 that was not working I boot it download (ODIN) mode and connect back to USB of my PC and Laptop, I hear a sound (the typical sound in windows once you connect any USB device) though I cannot access it I am positive that my USB port on both device are in good condition and since it was detected in windows through ODIN boot mode I was under the impression that its a phone software/firmware related. Can somebody help me on this one? thanks

Note 5 does not fast charge mode or detect otg

Excellent day to everyone, I request your help please.
I have note 5, Android 6.0.1, everything worked excellent but from one moment to another it does not go into fast charge mode and when connecting devices otg only tells me in popup window connected USB device but it does not open the micro SD connected to the adapter.
Obviously, I already tried the charger and the cable in another note 5 and it works perfectly. I also did center of charge cleaning but nothing.
I installed the application called USB host check and the following appears on the screen;
android.hardware.usb.host.xml
okay
handheld_core_hardware.xml
USB host not enabled
tablet_core_hardware.xml
not found
Apparently the same application can search the necessary files and write them in the relevant path. The problem is that I do not have root so I can not write to internal system.
No can do root because the pc does not detect the phone even activating USB debugging.
Any ideas? If I restart the phone to factory with all its wipes will be solved?
Is there any way to do root with no computer involved?
I thank you for your contributions and if any information I lacked to mention I beg you to tell me which to see if we can take it forward.
In advance, thank you everyone.

Mi5 Not Connecting To PC

I've been using my Mi5 for 6 months without any real issues, the occasional bug like fingerprint scan missing ect but overall no problem. Right now I am experiencing a problem that is driving me crazy. The USB options do not show up, only that it is charging. My PC doesn't recognize it anymore, and gives error 43. (USB device descriptor failed.) MiFlash, MiPCSuite all do not recognize it either.
Any help or solution would be greatly appreciated, I've spent days combing through potential fixes to no avail.
What I have tried:
-Mi PC Suite
-Mi Flash
-Default Android Drivers
-3 Different cables (2 xiaomi, 1 off brand)
-Factory Reset / Data Wipe
-QShortcut to force mtp usb options
-Developer options USB debugging on + selecting charging / mtp
-Reinstalling INF
-Disabing drivier signature enforcement
I've went as far as trying a different rom ect to no avail. It seems to revolve around the mi5 not recognizing usb connection, only charging for instance can't use usb charging
I've tried many options in terms of drivers, replaced the usb port and tech told me it was most likely motherboard issue and then tried to sell me a new phone. Unfortunately, I am living somewhere without many options for authorized support so looks like I'm out of luck.
Also tried different pc's, cables, roms, ect. All seems to stem from mi5 no recognizing usb
Hi,
Sorry not a solution but I'm having exactly the same problem too. Was fine for the first few months but then suddenly nothing. I've also tried it (with different cables) on :
Windows 10 PC
Windows 7 laptop
Linux Mint laptop
Macbook Air
And nothing but charging mode. Changing setting in developer options does nothing either. I've resigned to the fact it's most likely a hardware problem
Hi,
i had the problem that mi5 was not found by pc after a fresh install of windows 10 64bit.
I found a solution somewhere in the www
I have downloaded and installed the windows 10 N pack ( media feature pack ).
After that, restart the pc and try to connect the mi5 again.
This solution worked for me.
I have the same issue. Is there any solution? Is it covered by the guarantee?
Same problem here with mi6, maybe if we replacement de usb port of the phone?

Same Problem, Need Help
does anyone have same problem i need help and probably a fix to this problem, fastboot not detected too, i am currently using windows 10.. driver that i found online does not help either
hi, i need help in this case aswell. initially there no OS on my mi5, computers absolutely doesnt see phone (no unknown device etc, just nothing), so i can not send any zip file to install an OS. i can access trwp, tried OTG connection but it doesnt see either
Wow.. so I'm not the only one who has this issue.
Too bad there aren't any solution in this thread. My guest that it has something to do with the hardware. My phone is not recognized on PC and it is not charging properly either.
The strange thing is that it can charge on unknown chargers. It doesn't charge on "authentic" chargers (Xiaomi chargers, well-known brands like Aukey).
Solution
Guys (and gals)
I have the solution, i was as desperate as you all and it took a lot of digging into it, IT IS SO SIMPLE :
Download the app "USB SETTING" for MIUI and just turn on the option for file transfer, it also solves the ethernet problem. It worked for me, that's it.
(I also activated the USB debugging in the developer settings but I don't think it helped, as a matter of fact the right setting is present there in "select USB configuration" but refuses to work on my phone at least)
I hope it helped,
All the best on your paths <3

Connection problem with Android Auto and VW's App Connect

Hi,
neither my Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 (xiaomi.eu beta) nor the Xiaomi Redmi 5 (stock Xiaomi) of my girlfriend can successfully connect to a new VW Golf 7. Both are running latest MIUI version, everything up to date. Data connection is enabled, USB Debugging too, we tried several cables, no Dual Apps. Once a phone is connected and Data Connection is chosen an error is displayed that a connection is not possible, USB then switches back to charging.
This is very frustrating. I found many reports about problems, most of them could be solved by using different cables or disabling Dual App. Both Xiaomis should work with Android Auto and App Connect, at least that's what (some) people claim.
Any ideas what to test?
I use AA on a 2019 VW Polo with my Mi 9. I dont choose data transfer, just charging is enough. You need to download latest AA app and i dont have USB debugging enabled because data transfer with USB debugging always causes trouble.

I had the same problem on my mk7 jetta and in my case it was caused by having the USB modem activated on my phone (I often use my phone as a WiFi USB modem for a desktop computer not equipped with WiFi card). Turning back every USB option to normal/off did the trick for me. USB debug is not required.
Did you fix erro?
Helo, did you fix erro? I'm with the problem like you!

USB Data Not Working

Hello,
I have a Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro phone on which USB data transfer stopped working. Neither connecting the phone to the computer, nor connecting a USB OTG device work (although fast charging works fine). I'm not sure when it happened, however I think I updated the firmware/vendor sometime around then. Also, I'm running the latest Arrow OS 11 (which is quite out of date now..) I tried changing the board with the USB port but to no avail. I've also tried multiple USB cables, which I confirmed to work on another device. I even tried booting the phone into EDL (as well as fastboot) mode, however device manager doesn't recognize the device (and I doubt it's the drivers as it would probably result in the device appearing as QHSUSB_BULK, not "device descriptor request failed").
Has anyone dealt with such a problem before? Could it be caused by bad vendor/firmware? Or is it a hardware issue, which could be diagnosed? Perhaps the custom ROM could be somehow safely updated without a USB connection (with it being necessary to format data)? Thanks for any help!
Did you ever find the solution for your issue? I have a very similar problem, which appeared as far as I can remember without having done any updates before:
On my Mi 9T Pro I can slow charge (very slow, complete recharge takes 8+ hours), but I do not get working quick charge or a working usb connection.
I had the same problem a while back which was solved by changing the USB board. This time however, I have changed the USB board multiple times (at first I thought the new board was faulty) but I did not help.

Hello, I have similar problem. USB OTG doesn't work at all (in custom recovery or in rom). I guess changing USB charging port may help... but I'm not sure. Did you manage this problem? (I have other two 9t pro which works so it's not problem with USB cable).
