Best Fire to buy - Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Looking at getting a cheap tablet just for home automation control.
The Fire HD 8 looks like a good option but would like to get it to a clean Android experience since I wont be using any of the Amazon stuff ... thoughts?

You will need one that is rootable then.
See other threads for which that applies.

Probably best to stay away from current gen Fire devices. Of those being sold today only the HD 10 is rootable. No custom ROMs are available for that model as of this writing. You'd probably do better with an inexpensive phone that can be bootloader unlocked. No need to active it. Moto E4 is an excellent example. Some variants can be had for ~$40 USD. You'd need to do some homework as some carrier branded models can not be rooted and/or unlocked.
Another option is an older gen Fire. Most 2nd gen devices can be unlocked and rooted. Early 5th gen 7" Fires can be rooted provided FireOS was never advanced past 5.3.2. Finally, all 3rd gen HDX models can be unlocked/rooted but do not make the best platform for automation/connectivity.
Good luck.

This include Fire Kindle? or are they the same thing?

"Fire Kindle" is too generic to provide a meaningful response. Unless referring to a 1st gen Fire which sometimes went under that name. Definitely do not want one of those.

So what's the question? Reread the thread you started along with responses. If that's not clear you should probably stay away from custom solutions and just go with what Amazon offers to the general public.

I am looking to buy one that I can load Gapps on so that I can install URC Total Control 2.0 and Lutron Home+ and Sonos.
Just want to make sure that one that I purchase I will be able to follow this : https://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/development/amazon-fire-5th-gen-supertool-root-t3272695

You can load GApps on virtually any modern Fire - rooted or not. If that's the sole requirement suggest going with a reconditioned HD 8 from Amazon Warehouse.

Kindle Fire HD 7 flashed with Fire2 bootloader - Dead Brick

I admit, I got totally confused with all the multiple threads (this, this, this) on installing a second bootloader on the various Fire devices.
Somewhere along the line I ended up on the KFire2 thread and flashed that device's bootloader on my Kindle Fire HD 7.
Result? It's now a brick - no power, no boot, doesn't respond to charging, no response when connected to computer.
Is there anything that can be done to recover the device, or is it just good enough to be sold for "parts" on eBay?
Please advice.
If its within your 1 year warranty of purchasing it then amazon should send you a free replacement if you tell them it won't turn on. Otherwise I'd take a look at @kurohyou's thread in the kf2 section, it should work with a kfhd, but he has to map the contacts to the emmc out first.

Thank you @stunts513.
I sent a PM to kurohyou to see if he can spare his time to help.
Btw, I keep reading posts about a "shorting trick" but I can't seem to locate the thread. If you know where the thread is, would you mind posting it here for me please ?
Thanks a ton!
EDIT: Do you think, if I buy a new board off eBay and replace the bricked board on my device, I'd be able to have a working KFHD7? They seem to be selling for around 45$-65$ so it's not cheap, but still cheaper than a new tablet.
Nothing definite to replace drivers on the KFHD7, yet. If it's within warranty you will be fine. All Amazon checks for is physical damage and sends it back to China.

It already is out of warranty
Shorting trick doesn't work on 2nd gen devices because there's a file we need that has to be signed and pushed to the device and only amazon has it so the short trick is useless without that signed file.

Thank you!
Excuse me for my n00bness, but if I replace the bricked motherboard with a working one, I get a working tablet, correct ?
Appreciate your patience!
Um it should I think, hardware is all the same on the same model from what I know, as long as you make sure u buy a working mobo then it should work.

update?
Any update? Has OP purchased a new motherboard to get this to work? I have (stupidly) made the same mistake and, as you stated, my kindle is completely unresponsive (no power, flashing screen, nothing - not even with a fastboot cable).
Any update/help would be greatly appreciated.
A little late to the party here, but... I finally had a chance to reply to urover's PM today. Also, I had another person contact me about fixing KFHD7s... I made both the offer (and make it in general to everyone) that if someone could supply a KFHD7 that they do not expect to get back (specifically, finding a cheap broken one on ebay; only requirement is that the motherboard isn't grossly damaged), I'd be willing to do the work to trace where to solder to access the EMMC. After that, it's just a matter of actually soldering some wires and reflashing the bootloader.

Can the 5th-Generation Fire be resold after purchase?

Can the 5th-Generation Fire (SV98LN) be resold after purchase, or are they locked as soon as you sign into your Amazon account?
If they're locked, can they be unlocked?
If they can't be unlocked, what restrictions would a new owner face?
stkpxl said:
Pretty sure you can just sign out of your accounts before you factory reset it and then do it. I don't know if there is some kind of protection that they've put in place since I got the last Fire tablet and put CM on it, but better safe than sorry.

None - factory reset does the trick. Like all other Kindles including Fire derivatives. Device is remarkably easy to reprovision from an end user perspective. Suggests Amazon wanted it that way.

Quick question about my 2 kindles

Hey guys! Newly registered account, although i've been checkin this site out for quite awhile. But anyways, I have a Kindle Fire 5th Gen(2015) and a Kindle Fire 7th Gen(2017). The 2015 is already rooted and was all set up to my liking. But i think i broke the LCD on it because all I see is a bunch of gray/white lines and sometimes some color. The 7th gen came with an OS that was beyond being rooted, and from what I read, if i try to roll back, i will brick the kindle. Now i noticed the screen in the 7th gen is just a tiny bit bigger then the 5th gen. I was wondering if it is possible to take everything out of the 5th gen(motherboard and all except for screen) and put it into the 7th gen, just to use the screen. I know the buttons are moved, but I thought there would be some way without having to order a new LCD for the 2015. Does anyone think this might be possible? Or do you guys think the 7th gen screen would fit into the shell of the 5th gen? Thanks guys! sorry for the wall of text!

If you have a 7in Fire...not HD, or Kindle, just the 'Fire 7', you can downgrade from 5.6.0.0 to as low as 5.3.2.1. You won't be able to root, but you can uninstall/disable system apps. Check your account on Amazon and look at your device list to see the what type of 7in you have. If just the plain old 'Fire 7,' you can follow this guide to download And remove system apps.

Are the Fires still the same model (same back) from the 5.3.1.1 days?

So I was thinking of buying a new Amazon Fire tablet. Thing is, I want root. Fortunately, my roommate has a tablet with 5.3..1.1 on it (and rooted). My roommate doesn't really care about root, and only has it because I rooted it for her when installing the Google Play Store.
Thing is, she likes her tablet being blue. And I want us to be able to tell them apart easily. So I had an idea: I would get a black one, and switch out the backs. She is fine with this.
Thing is, I notice the colors are different on the site now. Does that mean they've changed models? Either way, can you still swap the backs from the newer ones to the older ones of 5.3.1.1. vintage (2016, I think)?
Google wasn't any help, and I figured that, if anyone would know, it would be you guys. I bet some of you even have both and could check.

At first I read it one way, now I read it the other. Guess I'll just check the exact model of my roommate's one.
Are the backs for the 7th gen and 5th gen definitely different, despite the extremely similar specs?

Button and port placement differ slightly; backs are not interchange between 5th and 7th gen models.

New Fire 7 (2015) does not charge at all out of box

I just bought the 2015 Fire 7 new from amazon.com with the idea of unlocking it for LineageOS, etc.
(2015 model since it can be unlocked without opening the device)
So it arrives today and doesn't turn on which is strange because almost all devices ship with some level of charge.
I plug it in and it turns on. The problem is the battery meter shows its charging at about 20% so I unplug the cable and the device immediately dies. It does this again and again and will not charge at all.
I understand that this isn't the highest quality of device and there are a lot of reviews stating it stops charging after a few months, but for something sold by an OEM as large as amazon this is completely unacceptable for it to not charge brand new right out of the box.
The charge level increases much faster than normal so I'm guessing its not getting charged at all and the percentage is the OS reading it wrong.
I'm going to be contacting Amazon shortly for a replacement but I was wondering if anyone knows a fix I didn't think of or has a similar experience with this issue.
Unless you are an older OS pre-5.3.2, you will have to open it. It sounds like you got a defective one, since it is 2+ years old sitting dead in a amazon warehouse the battery went to die. You can leave it on the charger for hours and see if it ever does anything, but i would return it and get a newer one. Opening and the shorting the clk is easy though.

Thanks for your response.
I did try leaving on the charger for a while and I think its safe to assume its just not going to work. There's no sign of the battery working at all, not even for a few seconds. I'm questioning if its even connected properly, probably not.
It's just unfortunate that I was ready to unlock this but now I have to have it shipped back and wait for a replacement (and hope the replacement doesn't have an issue). Even though this is a cheap tablet, it makes me feel like Amazon has no sense of quality control now.
I checked after it booted up and surprisingly this one still had 5.1 on it.
According to the thread you can still unlock a 2015 model w/ 5.3.2+ without opening it as long as you downgrade (downgrading bricks the device until finished unlocking)
k4y0z said:
If you're on a newer preloader, there are two options:
Open the device and short the pin marked in the attached photo to ground while plugging in.
Downgrade to 5.0.1 firmware via adb sideload in Amazon recovery, then proceed to use the left volume button to enter boot-rom.
NOTE: Using option two will brick your device until you have successfully finished the process.

Likely the Android base version; common point of confusion. That said, I have seen an occasional refurb arriving with an ancient build of FireOS (how??). Seems Amazon's refurb process is lacking in QC.

I'm 99% sure it was the Fire OS version since stock settings software updates page shows the Fire OS version and not the Android version.
It was showing build date or last updated 2016.
I don't remember the exact version since I only glanced at it but it definitely showed Fire OS 5.1.x
I'm worried because I might not be so lucky with my replacement, but if they keep taking them off the same shelf there might be a good chance.
Edit: It would appear that the last tangerine model has been sold making every new 2015 fire 7 out of stock. Seeing as this is the old gen I highly doubt they will be restocking it. This just keeps getting better and better.

Amazon just updated the page again. 5th gen back in stock on April 20th. All good.
I'm still within the return window so its going to be an Amazon credit refund and if its not back in stock after the few days it takes to process the return I guess I'll have to order a 2017 and decide between not having root and breaking the tablet trying to open it (I'm really bad with hardware stuff).
All I know is Amazon's stock experience is the worst thing that can be done to a tablet. Having AOSP on my 2011 Fire was the best.

Timeframe is right for FireOS 5.1.x (5.1.1-5.1.4). Must have dug that one out of a dusty closet in the basement.

Hardly. FireOS v6 is reasonably agreeable and somewhat customizable. Really a matter of personal preference. While most of my gizmos run custom ROMs (Moto's being the general exception) I'm perfectly happy with an unrooted but tweaked HD 8 2018 for the tasks asked of it.
